Chapter 28 - [28] Unveiling the Unknown

"YOU!?" The word hung in the air, frozen between them. Both Izumi and Rin were caught off guard by the unexpected pairing. The silence that followed was thick with awkwardness, making the atmosphere uncomfortable.

Rin couldn't bear the tension any longer and decided to break the ice. She turned to Izumi and said, "So, you're Miyamura Izumi?"

Izumi, still feeling the weight of the situation, nodded and replied, "Yes." Another bout of silence descended upon them, making the interaction feel even more strained.

It was Izumi who finally mustered the courage to speak again, his voice laced with awkwardness, "So, I guess we're paired up together for this project, I guess..."

Rin nodded in agreement, her voice mirroring his discomfort, "It seems so."

Their exchange had been filled with pauses and hesitations— because of the incident in the morning, reflecting the unease they felt in this new partnership.

As the awkward conversation continued, Izumi finally mustered the courage to break it. He cleared his throat and said awkwardly, "Um, I guess I'm looking forward to working on the project with you."

Rin, who had been nervously fidgeting with a strand of her hair, looked up at him with a more confident and self-assured demeanor. She flashed a playful grin and replied, "Well, Miyamura-Kun, you're pretty lucky to have me as your partner. I'll make sure this project turns out perfectly."

Just as their conversation seemed to be heading in a more comfortable direction, the school bell rang, startling them both. It was the unmistakable signal for the start of the next period.

Rin quickly glanced at the clock on the wall and said, "I guess we'll have to continue this later. I'll catch you later, Miyamura-Kun"

Izumi nodded, grateful for the chance to escape the awkwardness of the moment. "Yeah, see you later, Toshaka-san."

They both returned to their respective seats, a subtle sense of anticipation lingering in the air.

After their awkward conversation, the day continued with four more classes, which included Math, English, Calligraphy and Social Science. Nothing particularly noteworthy happened during these classes.

Whether it was because the teachers arrived promptly or other reasons, Izumi and Rin hadn't managed to talk much during this time.

Lunchtime finally arrived, and Izumi, true to his reserved nature, decided to retreat to the school rooftop to eat his lunch alone. It was his sanctuary, a place where he could enjoy a peaceful meal without having to engage in the usual hustle and bustle of the cafeteria or courtyard.

As he took a seat overlooking the schoolyard, Izumi couldn't help but reflect on the morning's encounter with Rin. He wondered how they would navigate this newfound partnership in their project. Would they continue to be as awkward with each other, or would they find a way to break the ice?

'Let's see what's the surprise she was talking about?'

As Izumi opened his tiffin box, his anticipation grew. His mother always had a way of surprising him with delicious homemade meals. Today was no exception. The moment he laid eyes on the contents, his heart skipped a beat.

Inside the bento box lay a generous serving of Okonomiyaki, a culinary masterpiece that never failed to make his mouth water. The golden-brown pancake was adorned with a colorful array of ingredients—thinly sliced pork, shredded cabbage, chopped green onions, and even a sprinkling of savory bonito flakes. A perfect drizzle of Okonomiyaki sauce glistened on top, promising a delightful fusion of flavors.

Izumi couldn't resist the urge any longer. His chopsticks eagerly gripped a piece of the savory pancake, and he brought it to his lips. As he took that first bite, his taste buds erupted with pleasure. The crispy edges of the Okonomiyaki gave way to a tender, melt-in-your-mouth pork filling, while the cabbage and green onions added a refreshing crunch. The combination of flavors was simply divine.

"Mmm, it's delicious!"

A contented sigh escaped his lips, and he couldn't help but close his eyes momentarily, savoring the wonderful taste. It was as if each bite was a small taste of home, a reminder of his mother's love and care.

Amid the bustling rooftop of the school, with students chatting and eating around him, Izumi enjoyed his meal in solitude. The awkwardness of the morning had faded away, replaced by a sense of comfort and contentment. In that moment, his mother's cooking had once again worked its magic, wrapping him in warmth and deliciousness.

As Izumi finished his delicious lunch, he sighed contentedly and wiped his mouth with a napkin. Just then, the door to the rooftop terrace was forcefully pushed open, startling him. He turned his head to see who had entered.

Through the door came Toshaka Rin, her irritation was quite evident as she scanned the rooftop terrace. When her eyes finally landed on Izumi, she couldn't help but express her annoyance. "So, here you are," she remarked with a hint of frustration.

Izumi, somewhat taken aback, replied with a simple, "Huh?"

In response to Izumi's "Huh?" Rin furrowed her brows and said, "Don't 'huh' me! And what are you even doing here?"

Izumi, feeling a bit awkward under her intense gaze, replied, "Uh, eating lunch?"

Rin's irritation grew more apparent as she scolded, "I can see that already!" She let out an exasperated sigh and continued, "Do you have any idea how long I've been searching for you?I even scoured the entire school looking for you!"

Izumi, perplexed, asked, "Why?"

Rin, with another sigh, said, "Why? Has it already slipped your mind what Kazami-sensei mentioned during the first period?"

Izumi, looking a bit embarrassed, replied, "Oh, about the project, right? Yeah, I remember that."

Rin's tone began to normalize as she continued, "So, if you remember that, then you should recall that we're supposed to meet our supervising teacher, right?"

Izumi, still somewhat puzzled, replied, "Yeah, but didn't they tell us to do that after lunch? We still have time for lunch, don't we?"

Rin, with an exasperated tone, snapped, "Honestly, I don't have the patience for this. Just come with me to meet the supervising teacher, or do I need to drag you there myself?"

In response to Rin's question, Izumi replied with a reluctant tone, "Alright, alright! But can I drop my lunchbox at our class on our way?" Rin agreed, saying, "Sure, but I'm coming alongside you!"

As they left the rooftop together, Izumi placed his lunchbox in his bag, and they began their journey towards their meeting with the teacher.

On the way, Izumi commented, "Room 8-X, the geography prep room! That's like in an entirely different building."

Walking beside him, Rin replied, "Well, it sure is far from our class. I wonder why they called us here."

Izumi pondered, "Maybe our project is related to geography or something."

Rin agreed, saying, "I think so too. Oh, it looks like we're here!" They reached the designated room.

Upon entering, they found their class teacher sitting at the head of the large table, smiling warmly as she welcomed them into the room.

Kazami-sensei welcomed Izumi and Rin with a warm smile as they entered the room, signaling for them to take their seats.

"Welcome both of you!, Now Please, have a seat and then we will dive into the project talks" she said.

Once they were settled, Kazami-sensei proceeded to clarify their project topic in a more straightforward manner. "Izumi-kun, Rin-chan, your assigned topic for this semester's project is 'Local Animals and Their Habitats.' And before any of you asks, 'yes' it includes birds and insects as well. Your goal is to explore, document, and understand the different wildlife in our area."

Izumi nodded, grasping the concept, and Rin seized the opportunity to ask a question. "Sensei, could you explain what we should focus on when studying these animals and their habitats? Are we supposed to observe them in the wild or read about them?"

Kazami-sensei appreciated Rin's curiosity. "Great question, Rin-chan. Your project will involve both observation and research. You'll observe these creatures in their natural surroundings, take notes on their behavior, and identify where they usually reside. Additionally, you'll research their life cycles, habits, and how they fit into our local ecosystem."

Rin nodded thoughtfully. "Then Sensei, how should we present our findings? Should we create reports or presentations?"

Kazami-sensei smiled, glad to clarify. "You have some flexibility in how you present your findings. You can create a report, a presentation, or even an engaging project like a poster or diorama. The key is to convey your discoveries and insights effectively, so you can choose the format that suits you best."

With a clearer understanding, Izumi and Rin were ready to begin their exploration of local animals and their habitats.

As their questions were addressed, Kazami-sensei informed them, "If you ever have more questions or need guidance during your project, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help. Now, I have other pairs of students to meet, so I'll leave you to your preparations, you can use this geography prep room for doing your project related work during the first period after lunch"

Before departing, she added, "Good luck with your project, Izumi-kun and Rin-chan. Feel free to ask for assistance whenever you need it."

Both Izumi and Rin expressed their gratitude, thanking Kazami-sensei for her guidance and support as they embarked on their project journey.

As Kazami left the room, Izumi, curious about their project's next steps, turned to Rin and asked, "So, how do you think we should proceed with the project?"

Rin rested her chin on her hand, pondering for a moment. Then, with a thoughtful expression, she suggested, "How about we start by gathering information from the library?"

Izumi nodded in agreement, appreciating the idea, "That sounds like a great plan. We can do our research during school days and save the fieldwork for either Saturdays or Sundays"

With their plan in place, they headed toward the school library, ready to begin their project on local animals, birds, and insects habitats.
