He decided to upgrade this because it significantly increased his energy by devouring the life essence of those killed by him.

Does that mean the stronger the Gene of those he killed, the greater the energy points he will possess?
If he no longer needed to end life himself, he could simply walk into the cemetery filled with powerful beings and absorb their life essence, rapidly increasing his energy to an unimaginable level.
Assuming he had absorbed the life essence of Chris, then he would have been able to verify, but it wasn't too late anyway.

In The Year 3016, Earth underwent a change that changed the foundation of the world forever.

Strange new genomes, previously undiscovered, appeared in both plants and animals, including humans.
These genomed were later discovered to have been awakened by an energy called Mana.
After years of experimentation, humans finally learned to harness this energy, greatly improving their strength, and even managed to apply it in technology, causing a great era of positive change.
But the question remained: what lies in this new galaxy?
Traveling out from the earth. Humans met with their first aliens.
A group of alien beings called Cydorfs.
The initial meeting between the Cydorfs and Humans was unsuccessful, leading to an immediate war between both factions.
Humans need to be united as one to fight off these invaders, and so the first Human Alliance group was created:
EIA!
With Earth gathered together as one, the war between Cydorfs and Humans raged on, with the Humans winning in the end.
But instead of killing off all the Cydorfs, Humans entered into a deal with them.
The Cydorfs were an alien group that possessed a deeper understanding of Mana and the information of this new galaxy.
Therefore, a deal was struck: the Cydorfs would become subordinates of the EIA instead of being wiped out outright, in exchange for sharing their knowledge of Mana and the New Galaxy with humans.
The EIA continued to exist after the war, expanding its purpose to regulate all Gene awakeners while also being responsible for combating alien groups, forming alliances, and defeating enemies.
Because of their important mission, only the most powerful gene awakeners are accepted to join, and their tests are the most difficult to pass.
They are a group holding not only the most powerful Gene Awakeners but also a diverse group of Alien life forms within their rank.
Hence, the title:
Ultimate Guardians of Earth.
