Chapter 123 - Old Trafford- Theatre of Surprises

Old Trafford was buzzing with energy before the match kicked off.

This was the home of Manchester United, where European nights held a special significance. The weight of history was palpable in the stands. The goal was clear: take control of the game early and set the pace.

CD Tenerife had a different plan in mind.

They weren't interested in possession just for the sake of it. They aimed for structure and precision, willing to let United have the ball.

Laurence Gonzales stood close to the technical area, hands tucked into his jacket, making minimal gestures and giving brief instructions. His team was already well-versed in the game plan.

Out of possession, they set up in a 5-2-1-2 formation. When they had the ball, the wing-backs pushed forward, the front two split apart, and Joel was tasked with isolating defenders.

Casemiro and Kanté held the center, while Kikoto floated between the lines. Grimaldo and Robertson provided width, with Koulibaly leading the defense and Varane mirroring him. Luna was responsible for tracking back.

The first few minutes were dominated by United.

Carrick dropped back between the center-backs, while Scholes positioned himself higher to help with ball progression. Rooney moved into spaces, calling for the ball, and Valencia stayed wide on the right. Nani was active on the left.

United aimed to stretch the field horizontally.

In response, Tenerife compressed their formation vertically.

The gap between midfield and defense rarely exceeded ten meters. Whenever Rooney received the ball, Casemiro was quick to close in. When the play shifted wide, the wing-back held back instead of rushing in.

Then, in the fifth minute, the atmosphere shifted.

Carrick made a lateral pass while facing some moderate pressure. It wasn't a careless move—just a bit predictable.

Casemiro saw the angle coming and intercepted it cleanly.

And just like that, the transition began.

With one quick touch, they moved forward.

Joel found himself wide on the left. Jones squared up, and Evra started to close in. Joel made a sharp cut inside, then burst back outside. Just two touches, and he created some space.

Natalio made a perfectly timed diagonal run between Ferdinand and Smalling, holding his position until the last possible moment.

Joel sent the pass early, skimming along the grass.

Natalio finished it on the first touch, sending the ball low and accurate past De Gea.

0–1.

Laurence took a deep breath. A quiet fist pump this time, and then just a quick hand signal to hold their shape.

United responded with intensity.

Rooney dropped deeper to help with ball circulation. Scholes picked up the tempo, and Valencia started to attack Robertson more aggressively.

Possession increased, and the territory began to shift.

In the 12th minute, Valencia sent in a cross that Koulibaly cleared.

In the 16th minute, Rooney received the ball between the lines, but his shot was blocked by Varane.

By the 18th minute, a through ball aimed for Welbeck was called offside.

The defensive line moved as one, stepping up together rather than individually.

This was all part of the plan.

Laurence had drilled them on their triggers. When the passer's hips opened toward goal, the line would move. If the receiving striker leaned forward too early, they would hold their position.

In the 21st minute, Nani cut inside and slipped the ball to Rooney, but the flag went up again.

Just small margins. Perfect timing.

United started to rotate more fluidly.

Scholes occasionally dropped into the left half-space while Carrick held his ground in the center. Rooney switched between playing as a striker and a midfielder. The goal was clear: disrupt Tenerife's defensive rhythm.

For a ten-minute spell, United controlled the ball at over 70 percent.

Tenerife did not chase recklessly.

They narrowed passing lanes. Forced circulation wide. Accepted crosses rather than central penetration.

Minute 25.

A lapse.

Grimaldo attempted a diagonal switch under pressure. Rooney intercepted twenty-five metres from goal.

Immediate strike.

Aragoneses reacted late but strong. Parried wide.

United sensed vulnerability.

Their full-backs advanced simultaneously. Valencia attacked further up the pitch. Nani started drifting centrally to overload the half-spaces.

Carrick and Scholes increased vertical attempts. Earlier balls over the top. Faster tempo.

Minute 29. Long ball to Welbeck. Offside.

Minute 31. Rooney tried again. Offside.

The trap was functioning at a high level.

Koulibaly controlled depth. Varane tracked shoulder alignment constantly. Luna communicated relentlessly.

Every step was collective.

Frustration crept into United's decision-making. Shots from distance increased. Crosses came earlier than ideal.

Then, minute 37.

Another turnover.

Kanté stepped into Scholes decisively. Clean contact. Ball won.

Immediate release to Casemiro.

Casemiro moved it forward in one touch to Kikoto.

Quaresma drifted centrally, dragging Evra with him. That subtle movement opened a corridor on the right.

Joel recognized it instantly.

He began wide. Then accelerated diagonally into the exposed channel.

Kikoto's pass was slightly behind. Joel adjusted stride without breaking momentum.

He reached the edge of the box.

Low cutback across the six-yard area.

Griezmann had separated from Smalling with a slight delay in his run. He arrived between defenders, body open.

First touch to settle. Second touch to guide.

De Gea shifted left.

The finish went right.

0–2.

Away supporters erupted.

The final ten minutes of the half were relentless.

Ferguson instructed his full-backs higher. Rooney pushed closer to Welbeck. Scholes attempted diagonal switches to stretch the back five.

Minute 41. Rooney from distance. Struck cleanly. Post.

Minute 43. Nani curled toward the far corner. Aragoneses tipped over.

Minute 44. Cross from Valencia. Koulibaly blocked at close range.

The defensive work rate was extreme.

Kanté recovered second balls repeatedly. Casemiro positioned himself to block passing lanes rather than diving into tackles. Kikoto dropped temporarily to form a midfield three when necessary.

The offside trap continued to operate under pressure.

Welbeck attempted to time a delayed run. Flag.

Rooney tried peeling off Koulibaly's shoulder. Flag.

Each decision tightened United's rhythm.

They were still dangerous. Still dominant territorially.

But they were not penetrating cleanly.

As halftime approached, Scholes attempted one last diagonal toward Valencia. Robertson delayed him just enough. Luna covered inside. The cross lacked precision.

Whistle.

2–0.

In the tunnel, Ferguson and Laurence finally locked eyes for a brief moment.

No words.

But for Laurence Gonzales, that look was everything.

It meant: You've earned this half. Now let's see if you can earn the next one as well.
