"She's in the hospital now, with me, with Uncle Reed, and all the people his lover carefully arranged... What do you count for here? She doesn't need you, and neither do I..."
Mary Douglas paused, her eyes downcast, looking at her hands clasped together, which were trembling uncontrollably.
"Beau Reed, do you know what I'm thinking about now? About the child I lost..."
Beau Reed's body swayed, his thin lips opening and closing, yet before he could speak, he heard Mary Douglas say again:
"Do you know what I thought about when I was trapped in that dark and damp place? I kept hoping you'd miraculously appear by my side every moment... and then I thought of seeing you gently comforting Quinn Martinez at the hospital bedside. Later, I wondered why I lost that child..."
"You weren't there when I needed you most, and now you're standing here, seemingly insignificant, and aside from making me sick, do you think I have any other feelings?"
