When Beau Reed saw Mary Douglas in the same place the next day, he sighed in relief.
He had thought she might decide to disappear from his sight just to avoid him.
Fortunately, she hadn't.
But even as he felt relieved, his heart wasn't exactly joyful.
Given her unusual way of thinking, there must be something more important than avoiding him.
But what exactly, he wasn't quite sure.
Mary Douglas always kept to herself, not leaving any space for people to get close to her.
Beau Reed was much the same, ignoring all attempts at conversation from the prettier girls.
Over time, the two of them almost became unique fixtures in the class.
Much like when they were kids.
But unlike back then, people no longer spent time trying to understand them.
Life went on in an orderly way, with occasional new happenings, but not much changed.
There was no intersection in their lives.
