Naruto SI: Kaito Red Lightnin Chapter 209

Kaito scratched the back of his head. "No point hiding it. Knowing Mom, the whole village will know by tomorrow anyway. I'm going on a date with Hotaru tonight."

Tsunade blinked, then grinned wide. "So you finally asked her out, huh?"

Shikaku let out a quiet chuckle. "About time, she's had a crush on you since you saved her from the Kumo and Root."

Tsunade leaned forward, smirk growing. "So when did you ask her?"

Kaito sighed, rubbed his face. "Yesterday."

"Figures," Tsunade said, laughing. "That's why you were grinning like an idiot all day."

"Ha ha, very funny. Laugh it up," Kaito deadpanned, shooting her a flat look.

Shikaku smirked faintly. "Didn't think you'd ask her out so soon. Thought you'd wait another year or two."

Tsunade snorted. "Please. He practically drools every time he sees her, especially when she's wearing something new."

Kaito groaned, dragging a hand down his face. "Mom told you that, didn't she?"

Tsunade's grin only widened.

Kaito exhaled heavily. "Well, if that's all, I'll be leaving."

And before either of them could answer, he vanished in a flicker.

Tsunade snorted to herself, setting the book aside. "The kid's smitten with her."

Shikaku gave a lazy shrug, the corner of his mouth tugging upward. "It's good for him. She keeps him grounded."

The sun was slipping toward the horizon, painting the village in that soft orange that always made the rooftops look like they were glowing from the inside. Kaito walked with his hands tucked in his pockets, the dark-blue haori with white trim settling neatly against his shoulders. The red of his hair caught the light; his blue eyes watched the path ahead, half-annoyed and half-resigned.

Beside him, Kushina practically floated—her usual bright clothes, the grin that never quite left her face. She skipped a little step now and then, like a kid delighted at some secret only she and the sun shared.

"Do you really have to come, Mom?" Kaito asked, giving her a pointed, exasperated look.

Kushina turned to him and beamed. "Of course, I have to come. It's my duty as a mother to record all this, ya know." She waggled a finger at him and then prodded his shoulder with mock seriousness. "Plus, if I'm not there, who's going to embarrass you properly, hm?"

Kaito groaned. "If I'd known you'd be like this, I wouldn't have told you, ya know."

"As if you could've hidden it from me," Kushina teased, voice singsong. "You're terrible at keeping secrets from me, Kai-kun, ya know."

He muttered something under his breath. 'She's enjoying this way too much,' he thought, but Kushina only hummed and squeezed his arm as they turned onto the path that led to the Hyūga compound.

Two guards stood at the entrance—Daichi and Takuma—arms folded, faces alert. They straightened the instant they spotted Kushina and Kaito.

"Good evening, Daichi. Takuma." Kaito inclined his head politely. "How've you both been?"

The two men bowed slightly. "Lady Kushina. Uzumaki Kaito."

Kushina flashed them a grin. "Good evening, boys."

Takuma's grin went impish. "We've been great. Are you here for Hotaru-sama?" He leaned in like he was about to reveal something earth-shattering. "Heard the two of you are going on a date today."

Kaito's eyes widened. Heat rose to his cheeks. "Wait—what? Everyone knows already?"

Kushina giggled and patted him on the shoulder.

Daichi chuckled. "Good luck dealing with Hiashi-sama. Heard he was seen sharpening his sword yesterday."

Kaito's face fell into an expression that was part mortified, part helpless. "Of course he was. Just kill me now."

Takuma snorted. "We won't have to. You'll be dead soon enough." He laughed.

Kaito ignored them and brushed past, trying to look composed.

The sun had nearly slipped beneath the horizon when Kaito and Kushina reached the Hyūga clan head's residence. The path behind them was quiet, but inside Kaito's chest, it was anything but.

He sighed, shoulders sagging. "Let's just get this over with," he muttered, lifting his hand to knock.

"Wait, wait, Kai-kun!" Kushina darted in front of him, wagging her finger.

Kaito gave her a wary look. "What is it, Mom?"

With the speed of a kunoichi and the fussiness of a doting mother, Kushina licked her thumb and brushed his brows into place. Then she fussed with his hair, smoothing a strand here, spiking another there, before tugging at his haori to straighten it.

"Alright, that'll do," she said, stepping back to admire her work. Her grin softened into something proud.

Kaito gave her a flat stare.

She only hummed and gestured grandly toward the door.

Suppressing another sigh, Kaito knocked and then stepped back to stand beside her.

Moments later, the door opened to reveal Hinata. Her face was pink, her pale eyes wide. "L-Lady Kushina. K-Kaito-sempai. Please… come in."

Kushina's grin widened. "Hinata-chan! How many times have I told you? Call me Aunt Kushina, ya know."

Hinata ducked her head, fingers tangling together. "Ah—ah—I'm sorry, Aunt Kushina," she stammered as she moved aside to let them in.

"That's better." Kushina patted her head fondly before sweeping into the house.

Kaito lingered a moment, offering Hinata a warm smile. "Hey, Hinata-chan. How've you been? It's been a while."

Her blush deepened until it nearly reached her ears. "H-hai. I've been fine," she whispered, eyes fixed firmly on the floor.

Just then, Hitomi stepped into the hall with a knowing grin. "Ah, Kushina, Kaito-kun—come in, come in."

"Hitomi!" Kushina greeted back, her own grin just as bright.

Kaito straightened and bowed politely. "Good evening, Lady Hitomi."

Hitomi's eyes twinkled as she gave him a once-over. "My, my, Kaito-kun. You're looking sharp today. Glad to see you put in the effort for Hotaru-chan."

Hitomi smirked, tilting her head. "And you can stop calling me so formally. Just call me Okāsan, now that you're going to end up marrying Hotaru-chan in the future."

Kushina clapped her hands together, eyes sparkling. "Oho! Hear that, Kai-kun? Looks like you've already been accepted into the family, ya know!"

"Ya know, I should've expected this…" Kaito pinched the bridge of his nose, fighting the urge to groan. 'Why me?' he thought.

Hitomi chuckled, clearly enjoying herself. "Come in. I'll get you both something to drink. Hotaru-chan is still getting ready." She turned and guided them deeper into the home.

They entered the living room, a serene Japanese-style chamber with tatami mats, cushions arranged neatly around a low tea table. Kaito and Kushina settled onto one side, the silence broken only by the faint rustle of sliding doors in the distance.

Just as they sat, the shoji panel slid open and Hiashi stepped inside.

He held a katana loosely in one hand, the blade drawn halfway from the scabbard as if he'd been inspecting its edge. The steel glinted sharply in the orange light filtering through the paper screens.

Kaito immediately stood, bowing low. "Ah… good evening, Hiashi-sama."

Hiashi's pale eyes flicked up from the blade as though only now noticing him. With a single, crisp motion, he slid the katana back into its sheath. The audible click echoed in the quiet room.

Expression unreadable, Hiashi gave a curt nod before moving across the tatami. He sat directly opposite them and, with deliberate calm, set the katana down on the table.

Kushina, still grinning, inclined her head politely. "Lord Hiashi, it's nice to see you."

"It's good to see you as well, Kushina-san," Hiashi said evenly. His attention shifted, settling back onto Kaito. "You may sit."

Kaito lowered himself back onto the cushion, his gaze flicking nervously toward the sheathed sword resting within arm's reach. He could feel Hiashi's eyes on him—sharp, unblinking, weighing.

A bead of sweat prickled at his temple. 'Why the hell am I sweating? I'm way stronger than him, ya know.'

Across from him, Kushina looked like she was having the time of her life. Her grin hadn't faltered for even a second.

The tension broke slightly as Hitomi returned, balancing a tray with practiced grace. A steaming pot of tea and several porcelain cups rested upon it. She knelt, placing the tray at the table's center before carefully pouring tea for each of them.

"Here we are," Hitomi said warmly, sliding cups toward Kaito and Kushina before setting one in front of Hiashi last. "A calming tea for such a… special evening."

"Thank you, Lady Hitomi," Kaito said quickly, taking his cup as though grateful for something to break Hiashi's stare.

He sipped carefully, only to realize Hiashi was sipping his own tea at the exact same pace—still staring directly at him.

Both Kushina and Hitomi exchanged glances, lips twitching as they struggled not to laugh.

Minutes stretched, the room filled with nothing but the soft sounds of sipping tea. Finally, Hiashi lowered his cup, setting it gently on the table.

"I heard," he began slowly, voice calm but carrying weight, "that you are taking my eldest daughter on a date. Is that correct, Kaito-san?"

Kaito lowered his own cup and met his gaze, steady despite the tightness in his chest. "Yes, Hiashi-sama."

Hiashi's expression didn't shift, save for a single nod. He leaned back, drawing out the silence before speaking again.

"I see," he murmured, reaching for his tea once more. He took a slow sip, his eyes never leaving Kaito's.

Kaito swallowed hard.

The Hyūga patriarch set the cup down once more, fingers resting lightly on its rim. His gaze sharpened.

"Then tell me," Hiashi said at last, voice low and even, "why should I entrust Hotaru-chan to you?"

Kaito set his cup down carefully, taking a breath. His blue eyes met Hiashi's pale ones without wavering.

"Because, Hiashi-sama," Kaito began, his tone steady, "I don't take relationships lightly. Hotaru-chan isn't just my best friend—she's also someone I admire. Someone I respect. I wouldn't ask for her time if I wasn't serious about treating her with care. And… I'd protect her with everything I have, ya know."

Kushina's grin softened into something proud, her arms folding as she gave a little nod. Kaito could practically hear her mind voice, 'That's my boy, ya know.'

Hitomi, sitting beside her husband, covered her smile with one hand and gave Kaito a nod of approval.

Finally, Hiashi leaned back slightly, fingers brushing the hilt of the katana on the table before pulling away.

"…Hn." A sound, almost like an acknowledgment, left him. "Your words are bold for someone so young. But—" His gaze sharpened. "Boldness without action is meaningless. If you intend to walk beside Hotaru, then prove it not with words… but with your conduct."

Kaito inclined his head, bowing slightly. "I understand, Hiashi-sama."

Hiashi nodded once, satisfied—for now.

Kushina tilted her head toward Hitomi, her grin turning sly. "See, Hitomi-chan? Didn't I tell you my Kai-kun would answer like a proper man, ya know?"

Kaito pinched the bridge of his nose. "Mom…"

Hitomi chuckled softly, eyes warm as she looked between her husband and Kaito. "He certainly has the composure for it. Not many can keep their voice steady under Hiashi's gaze."

Hiashi remained unreadable, but his hand left the katana entirely now. He folded his arms into his sleeves and sat straight-backed, regarding Kaito as though measuring him one last time.

The shoji door slid open with a soft clack.

Hotaru stepped inside. She wore a flowing hakama, the top dyed a gentle green while the bottom flared into a deep crimson, the same shade as Kaito's hair. The colors framed her like spring and autumn meeting in one place.

She bowed lightly. "Sorry I've kept you waiting, Lady Kushina… Kai-kun."

Kaito's head snapped toward her. For the briefest instant, his eyes widened—just a moment before he schooled his features back into calm.

Kushina's reaction, however, was immediate. She shot up from her cushion and hurried over with a radiant grin. "Oh, Hotaru-chan, look at you! You're so beautiful, ya know!"

Hotaru blushed, lowering her eyes with a small smile. "Thank you."

Kushina turned, her grin widening as she gestured at her son. "Don't you think so too, Kai-kun? Doesn't she look absolutely stunning, ya know?"

Kaito stood and gave a small nod, his voice low but firm. "You look good, Hotaru."

Hotaru's smile softened, and she returned the words with equal sincerity. "You look good too."

Before either could linger in the moment, Kushina whipped out a small camera with a triumphant grin. "Alright, you two—stand together. Just for a few pictures."

Hitomi, smiling knowingly, retrieved her own camera and stepped closer. "Yes, come now, don't be shy." She gently nudged Hotaru closer to Kaito until their sleeves brushed.

The pair stood side by side as the two mothers clicked away, adjusting angles and calling for one more shot. Hotaru's blush only deepened, while Kaito sighed softly, standing tall but clearly resigned.

Through it all, however, Hiashi's eyes remained on the young couple, sipping his tea in silence.

Kaito exhaled heavily. "Can we leave now?"

Kushina, still snapping one more picture, finally lowered the camera and nodded. "Right."

Kaito glanced at her. "What about you, Mom?"

Hitomi answered smoothly, setting her camera aside. "She'll be joining me for dinner. We'll have a guard escort her back home afterward."

Kaito gave a small nod in acknowledgment. He already had a clone waiting outside, so leaving kushina here wasn't much of a problem.

Then, he turned toward Hiashi. He bowed low. "We will be leaving, Hiashi-sama."

Hiashi set his cup down with a faint clink. "Then I expect Hotaru to be home no later than nine-thirty."

"Yes, sir," Kaito replied, nodding.

Hiashi gave only a quiet "Hmm" as he lifted his tea cup again, taking another slow sip.

Hitomi rolled her eyes and swatted his shoulder lightly. "Stop trying to intimidate him, Hiashi."

He shot her a sideways glare, annoyance flickering across his stoic face, but said nothing.

Kaito, eager to escape the pressure, quickly tugged at Hotaru. "Let's get going, Hotaru."

Hotaru blinked, but nodded. Together, they bowed politely to the adults before making their way out of the house.

As they passed through the Hyūga gates, Takuma let out a low whistle. "Still alive, huh? Didn't think you'd make it," he teased with a grin.

Kaito shot him an irritated look, lips pressed thin.

Hotaru tilted her head, puzzled by the remark.

Daichi, the older of the two guards, chuckled warmly. "Have fun, you two."

Kaito gave him a curt nod before guiding Hotaru onward.

Once they slowed their pace down the quiet road, Hotaru looked up at him curiously. "What was that about, Kai-kun?"

Kaito sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "When we came earlier, they said Hiashi-sama was seen sharpening his katana yesterday. So they were teasing that I came out alive, ya know."

Hotaru blinked before covering her mouth with a soft giggle.

Kaito glanced at her, and despite himself, smiled too.

But then his eyes narrowed, his body pausing mid-step as he turned slightly, scanning the trees.

Hotaru giggled again, sensing his mood. "They're just excited, Kai-kun."

Kaito exhaled through his nose, muttering, "Come on, Hotaru. Let's go somewhere we actually have some privacy, ya know."

Hotaru's blush deepened, but she nodded. "Alright." She slipped her hand into his, fingers intertwining. And in an instant, they vanished from the street.

Not a heartbeat later, a figure dropped from the tree in the very direction Kaito had been glaring at. Kushina landed lightly on her feet, her red hair swaying, hands planted firmly on her hips. She blew out a sharp huff, cheeks puffed with mock annoyance.

"Oh, come on, Kai-kun! We only wanted to see how your date went, ya know!" she exclaimed, her voice somewhere between exasperated and playful.

Hitomi appeared beside her in a softer landing, her composure intact. She patted Kushina's shoulder gently. "There, there. We knew they'd sense us. Maybe it's best we let the kids enjoy their evening."

Kushina grumbled, puffing out her cheeks before kicking a small pebble across the path. "Hmph."

Hitomi smiled knowingly. "Come on. Let's go. I'll have the chefs prepare something special." Hooking her arm through Kushina's, she began leading her back toward the Hyūga compound. Kushina pouted but allowed herself to be pulled along,

Lanterns swayed overhead, glowing orange and gold against the indigo sky. The streets of Tanzaku Town were alive—vendors calling out their wares, children laughing as they darted through the crowd, the air thick with the savory aroma of grilled food and the sweet scent of candied fruit.

On a rooftop above it all, Kaito and Hotaru stood side by side, hand in hand. Hotaru's pale eyes swept over the bustling streets below, wide with quiet wonder. "Where are we, Kai-kun?"

Kaito scratched the back of his head, a sheepish grin tugging at his lips. "We're in Tanzaku Town. It's harvest festival week. I thought you'd enjoy going to it, ya know."

Hotaru turned her gaze back to him, her lips curving into a soft smile, eyes closing as she nodded. "Yes. I would like that."

A grin flickered across his face as he squeezed her hand. "Alright then, let's go." With that their bodies flicker in and out as the two vanished from the rooftop, reappearing amid the colorful bustle of the main street.

The streets of Tanzaku Town buzzed with life, lantern light spilling across rows of bustling stalls. The scent of grilled meat and sweet syrup hung thick in the air, mingling with laughter and music from passing performers.

Kaito and Hotaru moved at an easy pace, still hand in hand, weaving between families and festival-goers. Every so often, something would catch Hotaru's eye, and Kaito would stop with her, a small grin tugging at his lips.

They sampled everything—takoyaki, piping hot with a gooey center that nearly burned Kaito's tongue; yakitori, sweet glaze dripping as they shared skewers between them; crispy grilled squid brushed with salt and lemon that made Hotaru's eyes brighten with each bite.

Each time, Kaito bought just one portion, breaking or splitting it neatly before offering the larger half to Hotaru. "We should save room for dinner later, ya know," he said with a smirk, though his eyes softened when she took the food with a shy smile.

Hotaru covered her mouth as she chewed, nodding lightly. "You're right, Kai-kun. Still… everything tastes better here somehow."

Kaito chuckled, watching the way the lantern light reflected in her pale eyes. "Maybe because you're enjoying it."

Her blush deepened at that, and she quickly looked away toward the next stall, though her lips curved into a smile she couldn't quite hide.

At one stall, they stopped for the goldfish game. A shallow pool glimmered with darting flashes of orange and white. Hotaru crouched gracefully, dipping the delicate paper scoop with steady hands. She caught one, then two, her face glowing with delight.

Beside her, Kaito crouched too—only for his scoop to tear the instant it touched the water. He scowled, grabbing another, only for it to rip again. And again.

By the fifth attempt, his eye twitched, and his jaw was clenched. "These things are rigged, ya know."

Hotaru giggled softly behind her sleeve, her eyes curving with amusement. "Or maybe you're just too strong, Kai-kun."

Kaito groaned, tossing the shredded remains of another scoop aside. "Tch."

The shuriken-throwing booth was next. Toy weapons lay piled in a basket, clearly designed with no balance or aerodynamics in mind. Civilians threw them one after another, most clattering far from the mark.

Kaito picked the toy shuriken up, weighing it in his hand, his eyes narrowing. Thunk. Thunk. Thunk. One by one, every target fell as if it were the easiest task in the world.

The booth owner gaped before forcing a smile. "W-well done! You win the grand prize." He handed over a large stuffed panda.

Kaito turned to Hotaru, offering to her. But Hotaru's gaze had shifted. A little girl stood nearby, head bowed, her father scratching his head awkwardly after missing every shot.

Hotaru knelt down to meet the kid's eyes. "Here. Would you like this?"

The little girl's face lit up like a lantern as Hotaru placed the panda in her arms. "Thank you!" she squeaked, hugging it tight.

Kaito watched, the corners of his mouth tugging upward despite himself. 'Of course she'd give it away,' he thought, a warm swell rising in his chest.

Hotaru straightened and glanced back at him, her expression soft. "She needed it more than I did."

Kaito met her gaze, smiling faintly as he shook his head. "You really are something else, ya know."

After an hour of games, food, they finally stopped at the edge of a quieter street. Before them stood a grand building, its sliding doors framed with carved wood, its sign lit proudly: Sōsen-tei.

Kaito turned to her, nodding toward the entrance. "Come on, Hotaru. Let's get something to eat."

Hotaru hesitated, glancing up at the tall entrance, the gilded characters of the sign gleaming proudly above. "Are you sure, Kai-kun? Sōsen-tei is… really expensive. We could go somewhere simpler. You don't have to spend so much just for me."

Kaito scratched the back of his head, a sheepish grin pulling at his lips. "Eh, it's fine, Hotaru-chan. I kinda… own this place, ya know."

Her pale eyes widened in shock. "You… own Sōsen-tei?" She turned back to the sign, as if she hadn't read it properly the first time.

Kaito rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah. It's kinda a secret, ya know. I already booked us a room."

Hotaru blinked, still surprised, but then a small smile tugged at her lips. "I see… Kai-kun." She nodded.

At the reception, Kaito gave his name, and they were led down a polished corridor to a secluded private booth at the very back. The sliding door opened to reveal a room lined with tatami, a low lacquered table in the center. A hanging scroll of calligraphy adorned the wall, and soft light from a paper lantern bathed the space in gold.

Kaito and Hotaru slipped inside, settling opposite one another with their legs folded neatly beneath them.

A waiter appeared, bowing as he handed them both menus. "I will return in ten minutes to take your orders," he said politely before sliding the door shut behind him.

Hotaru flipped the menu open, her brow furrowed in curiosity. "I didn't really think you owned this place, Kai-kun."

Kaito peered over the edge of his menu, his expression calm. "Eh, it's kinda a family business, ya know. We can't really rely on mission income alone. Other clans have businesses too."

Hotaru nodded slowly, her eyes scanning the dishes. "Are these… all Kushina-san's recipes? I recognize some of them."

Kaito gave a small nod, lowering his menu. "Yeah, they're recipes from her clan, ya know. And some are her own." He set the menu on the table, hesitated for a moment, then reached into his haori. Clearing his throat, he pulled out a small wooden box. "Hotaru…"

Hotaru blinked, looking up—then her eyes widened as they fell on the box in his hands. Her face flushed crimson. "A-ano, aren't we going too fast, Kai-kun? I mean… I wouldn't say no but… aren't we a little too young for… for that?" Her voice squeaked, growing higher as her cheeks burned redder and redder.

Kaito blinked, confused, glancing between her and the box. Then realization hit him, and his own eyes widened. "What—no, no, no, it's not like that, Hotaru-chan!" He fumbled with the clasp and flipped the box open, revealing a delicate pendant shaped like a swirl. "I made this for you, ya know. As a gift."

Hotaru's hands flew to her face, her blush spreading to the tips of her ears. "O-oh… I—I misunderstood…" She peeked down at the pendant, her embarrassment giving way to awe. Carefully, she lifted it out of the box. "It's beautiful."

Kaito scratched his cheek, a little flustered himself. "It's nothing fancy, but I made it myself. The crystal—I found it on a mission, ya know."

Hotaru nodded quickly, fingers brushing over the polished surface. "It's beautiful," she whispered again, then glanced up at him shyly. Gathering her courage, she rose, walked around the table, and settled right in front of him. Handing him the pendant, she turned her back. "Can you… Help me wear it, Kai-kun?"

Kaito's throat tightened, but he nodded. "Yeah." Taking the pendant gently, he waited as Hotaru lifted her hair, exposing the pale nape of her neck. With steady fingers, he clasped the chain around her.

Hotaru turned back slowly, the pendant now resting against her collarbone. Her hand came up to cradle it, her eyes shimmering softly as she looked at him. Their faces drew closer, the space between them shrinking as if pulled by an invisible thread.

And then—

Knock knock.

Both of them jolted apart, nearly tumbling into the walls of the booth.

The sliding door creaked open, and the same waiter from earlier peeked in. "Are you ready to order, sir—?" He froze, blinking at the sight of them standing awkwardly against opposite walls, faces flushed crimson.

Kaito coughed into his fist, striding back to the table with as much composure as he could muster. "Yes, yes—we're ready." He grabbed the menu a little too quickly.

Hotaru scrambled to sit as well, snatching her own menu and holding it up as though the characters could shield her from the heat of her cheeks.

The waiter's gave them an awkward nod. "Very well. I'll take your orders."

Later that night, the streets of Konoha had quieted. Festival lanterns still glowed faintly in the distance, but here, near the Hyūga compound, the world was hushed beneath the bright glow of the moon.

Kaito and Hotaru walked side by side, their hands gently intertwined. Neither spoke much—the silence wasn't heavy, just comfortable, each step echoing softly against the stone path.

When they finally reached the gates of the Hyūga compound, they slipped inside, the quiet guards offering them a knowing glance but saying nothing. Together, they continued until they stood before Hotaru's home.

Kaito turned to her, his usual composure softened by the silver light. "I had a great time, ya know."

Hotaru nodded, her voice calm but her cheeks faintly pink. "Yeah… me too."

Kaito scratched the back of his head, a sheepish grin tugging at his lips. "So… you think we should go out again?"

Hotaru's gaze flickered up at him, and she nodded once, firmly.

Relief eased into his grin. "Good. Well… I'll go now. Good night, Hotaru."

Just as he turned to leave, Hotaru's hand tugged gently at his sleeve. Before he could react, she leaned up on her toes and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.

His breath caught, eyes widening as she quickly stepped back, her face flushed. Without a word, she retreated into her home, sliding the door shut behind her.

Kaito stood there frozen for a moment, a hand slowly lifting to touch the spot where her lips had brushed.

Then, a grin broke across his face, wide and unrestrained.

With a body flickering he blurred and he vanished into the night, the warmth of that fleeting kiss still lingering on his skin.
