The hospital room had been too quiet for too long that kind of quiet that didn't feel peaceful anymore—only fragile. Ava hadn't moved from her mother's bedside since the moment she noticed that small, almost invisible twitch in her mother's fingers.
At first, she thought she imagined maybe her exhausted mind was playing tricks on her but then it happened again, weak resistance against stillness.
Ava's breath caught sharply, her hand tightened around her mother's.
"Mama…?" she whispered again, voice trembling like it was afraid to exist too loudly.
Liam straightened instantly
"What is it?"
Ava pointed, shaking slightly. "Her hand… it moved."
Liam leaned closer, eyes narrowing with focus, fr a second, nothing happened and he thought the feeling of Ava wanting to be with her mother was making her to see things, but then her mother's finger moved again.
This time clearer and Intentional.
Liam exhaled sharply. "I saw it." He was shocked
Ava's eyes widened instantly, tears already forming again—but this time not from grief but from hope.
"Doctor!" Liam called out immediately.
The door opened within seconds, two nurses rushed in first, followed by the doctor from earlier.
"What happened?" the doctor asked quickly.
Ava stepped aside immediately, pointing toward the bed.
"Her fingers moved," she said urgently. "Just now. Twice."
The doctor's expression changed instantly.
"Are you sure?"
We're sure," Liam answered firmly. "We both saw it."
The doctor moved quickly to the bedside, checking monitors and gently examining the patient's hand ,the room suddenly filled with controlled urgency, machines beeped softly, one of nurse adjusted the IV line while another checked oxygen levels.
Ava stood frozen near the edge of the bed next to Liam, hands trembling slightly as she watched everything unfold, her heart was beating very fast and lou with hope.
"What does it mean?" she asked quietly.
The doctor didn't answer immediately that silence alone made her stomach twist then finally he replied
"It could be neurological response returning," he said carefully. "We need to observe closely. Sometimes the body reacts before consciousness returns."
Ava swallowed hard. "So… she's waking up?"
"Possibly," the doctor replied. "But not yet fully conscious."
Liam placed a steadying hand on Ava's shoulder.
"She's still fighting," he said quietly.
Ava nodded, tears slipping down her cheeks again—but this time she didn't wipe them away because they didn't feel like pain, they felt like relief trying to break through her fear.
******************************************
Outside, the sky had shifted into a soft evening grey. Clouds hung low over the city like a quiet blanket, the kind that muted sound and made everything feel slower. Rain had not started yet, but the air carried that heavy scent of it coming soon.
Inside the hospital room, the atmosphere felt just as suspended like everyone was holding their breath... waiting
The doctor adjusted something on the monitor again.
"Let's increase observation frequency," he instructed the nurses. "If there's any further response, notify me immediately."
They nodded and left the room quietly and just like that, the urgency softened again. Ava sat back down slowly, her legs suddenly feeling weak. Liam pulled a chair closer for her without saying a word, she sank into it her eyes never left her mother.
"She's really coming back?" Ava asked again, softer this time, like she was afraid asking too much would break the moment.
Liam hesitated, then he nodded
"We just have to be patient."
Ava let out a shaky breath.
"I don't think I remember how to be patient anymore."
Liam gave a small, sad smile.
Minutes which felt like hours passed and just then something changed again. The machine monitoring her mother's heart rate shifted slightly with a different rhythm a stronger one than the time of when her hands twitched, Ava stood immediately again.
"Liam…"
"I see it," he said quietly and called for the doctor's attention again. The doctor returned almost instantly like he had heard the monitor beeping from his office. Everyone moved closer again, faint sound escaped the mother's throat, it didn't sound like a word, just air trying to become sound.
Ava's hand flew to her mouth.
"Oh my God…" she gasped
Her mother's eyelids fluttered, once... twice and then slowly— opened gentlilike they are trying to take in the sight in front of them enough to show awareness, enough to show life.
Ava broke instantly, tears spilled uncontrollably as she stepped closer.
"Mama…" she whispered, voice cracking. "Mama, it's me."
Her mother's gaze was unfocused at first, everything seemed blurry...then it slowly settled in her daughter "Ava". There was a faint shift in her expression as she recognised who was in front of her, a weak, fragile awareness.
A sound escaped her lips again, softer this time.
"A…va…"
Ava gasped.
"I'm here. I'm here, Mama."
Her mother tried to move her hand again trembling, Ava grabbed it immediately, holding it tighter.
"I've got you," she whispered repeatedly. "You're okay. You're okay."
Liam stood slightly behind her, watching quietly, happiness feeling his heart...Just then—her mother's eyes shifted slightly, past Ava and to Liam she paused then her lips parted slightly.
"You…"
Ava blinked, liam froze, Her mother's voice was weak, barely audible, but clear enough.
"You... who are you?… Are you... her boyfriend?"
Ava blinked rapidly. "Mama, no, he's—"
But before she could finish she stared at Liam —
Liam had already frozen completely, the word kept ringing in his head... "Boyfriend". The word lingered in the air longer than it should have.
Ava rushed to correct it. "He's my best friend, Mama. Liam. You remember him."
Her mother blinked slowly again, still disoriented.
"Oh…"
But Liam didn't speak, he just stood there quietly staring
Because for a split second— Something unfamiliar had flickered inside him. A thought he hadn't allowed himself to have before.
What if that idea didn't feel wrong?
He swallowed slightly, he had a girlfriend why would he be thinking like that about his best friend?
Ava didn't notice Liam's dilemma as she was too focused on her mother.
But Liam?
Liam stayed still for a moment longer than necessary, then forced a small smile.
"It's nice to meet you properly," he said gently.
Ava's mother smiled faintly again before her eyes slowly drifted shut.
The doctor stepped in quickly.
"She's stable again. This is good. Very good."
Ava nodded repeatedly, still crying softly.
"She opened her eyes," she whispered like she couldn't believe it.
Liam nodded. "She did."
Ava turned to him slightly.
"Thank you for being here."
He looked at her for a second longer than usual.
Then nodded.
"Always."
But the word didn't land the way it normally did.
Something about it felt different.

Meanwhile—
Far away from the hospital… In a high-rise building lit only by the glow of city lights and computer screens—
Alex sat in silence with a laptop open in front of him. Mason was beside him, scrolling through updates on his phone.
"You're really doing this again?" Mason asked, glancing sideways.
Alex didn't look up. "Doing what?"
"Checking hospital reports like you own the place."
Alex's jaw tightened slightly.
"I do own part of it."
Mason sighed. "That's not what I meant."
Alex ignored him then Mason leaned closer.
"She's stable," he said more softly. "That's what you wanted to know, right?"
Alex didn't answer him , his eyes stayed fixed on the screen which had a small medical update.
"Viital signs improving, Brief consciousness regained, then resting state"
"She woke up," Alex said quietly.
Then Mason studied him silently wondering what was going on in his friend's head
"You're too involved in this." He said
Alex finally looked up, his expression cold and unreadable as usual
"I'm not involved." He countered back
Mason smirked faintly. "Rightttt. That's why you're tracking her oxygen levels at midnight?"
Alex closed the laptop slowly, like he hadn't not been doing that, but then decided to give in as he had already been caught
"I just need to know she's stable."
Mason raised a brow, confused as to why he cared
"And when she is?"
Alex stood up from this chair and walked to the coffee table
"Then I move on." He responded
But even he didn't sound convinced.

Back at the hospital…
Ava sat beside her mother again, holding her hand tightly. Liam stayed nearby, the room was calmer now. Ava leaned her head slightly forward, whispering to her mother.
"Stay with me, okay?"
Her mother didn't respond, but her fingers tightened faintly around Ava's and that was enough assurance Ava needed
Meanwhile ____
Outside the hospital room... The corridor was quiet, the kind of silence that only existed after hours of fear finally loosened its grip. Liam stepped out carefully, allowing the door to close behind him.
For the first time all day, he exhaled. Ava's mother had opened her eyes. His bestfriend had actually smiled
The image lingered in his mind.
For a moment, it felt like a weight had lifted from his chest, just then his phone vibrated.
Once, twice, three times
Liam frowned and pulled it from his pocket.
The screen lit up immediately_ "Claire"
His stomach tightened, He hadn't checked his messages in hours.
The notification count alone made his chest feel uncomfortable.
17 missed calls.
24 unread messages.
Liam stared at the screen.
The newest message appeared first.
Claire: Is she okay?
Then another read
Claire: Please just tell me she's okay.
Another.
Claire: Liam, I'm worried too.
His thumb moved slowly, scrolling upward, the messages became older.
Claire: You left before I could even finish talking.
Claire: I know Ava needs you right now.
Claire: But I need you too.
Liam swallowed, his eyes continued downward, then he reached the message that had been sent three hours ago.
The one that made him stop.
Claire: I feel like I'm losing you.
The words sat heavily on the screen.
Liam stared at them for a long moment.
Longer than he should have, because he didn't know how to answer.
Was she losing him?
The question should have been easy.
It wasn't. He rubbed a hand across his face.
Exhaustion settled over him, his phone vibrated again.
Another message.
Claire: Can you call me when you have a minute?
There was no accusation, no anger, just sadness, which somehow felt worse.
Liam closed his eyes briefly. He should call her. He knew that, he wanted to call her.
So why had he been standing here for nearly five minutes staring at the screen?
A nurse walked past him carrying a chart.
She offered a small smile.
"You must be relieved."
Liam blinked.
"What?"
"Your girlfriend has been through a lot."
The nurse adjusted the chart in her arms then she smiled again.
"She looked so happy when her mother woke up."
Liam froze, then the words hit him unexpectedly..."your girlfriend". A strange silence settled inside him normally, he would have corrected her immediately, without hesitation, without thought.
Instead—
His mind flashed back to the hospital room.
Ava crying beside her mother, her laughing through tears, she gripping his hand when she got scared, her thanking him for staying.
"No." He responded quietly
The nurse tilted her head.
"Oh. Sorry. I assumed—"
The answer came a little too quickly.
Liam forced a polite smile
"I'm not."
The nurse nodded apologetically before continuing down the corridor Liam watched her leave then looked back at the closed hospital room door... behind it, Ava was sitting beside her mother.
His phone vibrated again.
"Claire", Still waiting...Liam stared at the screen, then finally pressed call.
As the ringing began, he looked one last time toward Ava's room.
And for the first time in years...
He wasn't entirely sure why.
