...
The Capitol Punishment Pay Per View had kicked off with a grueling, violent masterpiece, setting a brutally high bar for the rest of the evening. But as the cage was slowly raised back into the rafters, the anticipation in the arena quickly pivoted to the looming main event. The elimination tag team match between Team RAW and the Nexus was on the horizon, and the mystery of the ninth man still hung heavily in the air.
Before the broadcast moved to the next contest, the camera swept across the premium lower bowl seating, settling on a heavily guarded luxury box. The crowd inside the Capital One Arena let out a massive, unified cheer as the faces of the guests flashed across the giant TitanTron.
Sitting in the front row of the box, smiling warmly and waving to the fans, were the President of the United States, Barack Obama, and First Lady Michelle Obama.
"Listen to this ovation!" Cole beamed, a wide smile in his voice. "We knew tonight was a special event, being here in Washington D.C., but we are absolutely honored to have the President of the United States himself and the First Lady in attendance for Capitol Punishment!"
"Look at that smile!" Lawler chuckled, waving up at the booth from his commentary desk. "I just hope the President and Mrs. Obama enjoyed that opening steel cage match! They got a front row seat to see exactly why we call this the most physically demanding entertainment in the world!"
JBL adjusted his tie, clearing his throat. "It's great to have the President here, King, but I hope he's taking notes. Because later tonight, Wade Barrett is going to show everyone exactly how a hostile takeover is executed. Politics is one thing, but running a locker room? That takes a different kind of ruthlessness."
The camera lingered on the First Family for a few more moments as the crowd chanted "U-S-A!" before the production team seamlessly transitioned to a video package highlighting the recent, shocking developments on Friday Night SmackDown.
"Moving on to our next championship bout," Cole pivoted. "Just a few short weeks ago, the wrestling world was completely flipped upside down when JTG and Shad Gaspard pulled off the upset of the decade, dethroning Rated RKO to become two time WWE Tag Team Champions! Tonight, Cryme Tyme faces a vastly different challenge against the high flying duo of Sin Cara and Hunico."
A heavy, pulsing hip hop beat hit the speakers. "BROOKLYN, BROOKLYN!"
The arena exploded in cheers as JTG and Shad Gaspard stepped out from the curtain. The two street tough brawlers slapped hands, wearing their signature boots, jeans, and gold chains, with the bright blue and gold WWE Tag Team Championships strapped securely around their waists. They played to the crowd, bringing a massive wave of energy down the ramp.
Moments later, the lights dimmed, replaced by a mystical, echoing melody. Sin Cara and Hunico bounded out onto the stage, both wearing intricate lucha libre masks and brightly colored tights. They didn't walk down the ramp, they sprinted, simultaneously sliding into the ring and leaping onto the turnbuckles with breathtaking agility.
The bell rang, and the match began with an immediate clash of completely contrasting styles.
JTG locked up with Hunico, and the Mexican superstar immediately used his speed to slip out of a waist lock, hitting a rapid fire sequence of arm drags that sent JTG spinning to the canvas. JTG popped back up, looking slightly surprised, and tagged in his massive partner.
Shad Gaspard stepped over the top rope, towering over both luchadores. Hunico tried to chop the big man's chest, but Shad didn't even blink. Shad grabbed Hunico by the throat, lifted him effortlessly into the air, and threw him halfway across the ring with a massive biel toss.
"The raw power of Shad Gaspard is just unbelievable," Cole noted as Hunico scrambled to his corner to tag in Sin Cara. "These luchadores are going to have to stick and move if they want to survive."
Sin Cara sprang into the ring, bouncing off the ropes like a pinball. He dodged a heavy clothesline from Shad, hit the opposite ropes, and launched himself into a springboard crossbody. But Shad simply caught him out of mid air. With a booming laugh, Shad transitioned the hold, flipping Sin Cara backward over his head with a devastating fallaway slam.
"Cryme Tyme is showing exactly why they beat Edge and Randy Orton," Lawler praised. "They have a perfect mix of street fighting and brute force!"
But Sin Cara and Hunico were resilient. As Shad went for a running big boot, Sin Cara slid through the big man's legs, delivering a sharp kick to the back of Shad's knee. Sin Cara made the hot tag to Hunico, and the high-flyers went to work.
They utilized blinding tandem offense to chop down the larger champions. Hunico hit a springboard dropkick, followed instantly by a standing moonsault from Sin Cara. They kept Shad grounded, targeting his legs with quick, stinging strikes. When JTG tried to rush the ring to break up the momentum, Hunico ducked, pulling the top rope down and sending JTG spilling to the outside.
"Look out!" Cole yelled.
Sin Cara and Hunico hit opposite ropes, built up maximum speed, and launched themselves into the air, executing synchronized, beautiful suicide dives that completely wiped out both members of Cryme Tyme on the ringside floor.
The Washington crowd erupted, chanting "LUCHA! LUCHA! LUCHA!"
The match evolved into an instant classic. The momentum swung wildly back and forth. Back inside the ring, JTG caught Hunico with a brilliant, leaping Mug Shot facebuster, but Sin Cara broke up the pin at the last second with a diving senton.
The climax arrived in a breathless sequence. Hunico climbed the top turnbuckle, looking for a falling star press to finish off JTG. But JTG rolled out of the way, leaving Hunico to crash hard onto the canvas. JTG desperately lunged for his corner, slapping Shad's outstretched hand.
Shad hit the ring like a bulldozer. He leveled Sin Cara with a massive clothesline, then grabbed a groggy Hunico. Shad scooped the luchador up onto his broad shoulders in a Samoan Drop position. JTG hit the ropes, building speed.
"They're setting it up!" Lawler shouted.
As Shad dropped backward with the Samoan Drop, JTG simultaneously leapt into the air, catching Hunico by the neck and driving him down with a running neckbreaker.
The devastating G9 combination connected flawlessly.
Shad rolled out of the ring to intercept a recovering Sin Cara, leaving JTG to hook Hunico's leg.
"One! Two! Three!"
The bell rang as the hip hop beat kicked back in, signaling a hard fought, spectacular victory for the champions.
"What a match!" Cole cheered. "The speed of the luchadores was incredible, but the power and teamwork of Cryme Tyme proved to be too much! JTG and Shad Gaspard retain the gold!"
JBL nodded in reluctant agreement. "They earned it tonight. It wasn't pretty, it was a street fight, but they held onto the championships."
The Pay Per View continued to deliver at a blistering pace. The men and women of both the RAW and SmackDown locker rooms put on a series of highly competitive bouts that kept the energy inside the Capital One Arena at a fever pitch. A great singles match saw Kofi Kingston pick up a hard fought victory over Evan Bourne, and a massive fatal four way match kept the fans glued to the edge of their seats.
But the emotion of the night reached a beautiful crescendo during the Divas Championship match.
The reigning champion, Natalya, walked down the ramp looking supremely confident. She was a third generation technical marvel, a graduate of the legendary Hart Dungeon, and she had dominated the division with her punishing submission holds for months.
Her challenger, Brie Bella, walked out to a massive ovation. Brie's journey to this moment had been long, agonizing, and deeply personal. For months, she had been defined by her twin magic, sharing the spotlight with her sister Nikki.
But after a bitter, highly personal rivalry that fractured their bond where her sister joined the Undisputed System, Brie had been forced to rebuild herself from the ground up as a singles competitor. She had fought tooth and nail, scratching and clawing her way up the ranks to finally earn this one on one opportunity.
The bell rang, and Natalya immediately sought to ground the challenger. The champion initiated a brutal, methodical grappling clinic. She tied Brie up in complex knots, stretching her arms and legs, utilizing a surfboard stretch that had Brie screaming in pain.
"Natalya is trying to break Brie's spirit before she breaks her body," JBL analyzed coldly. "Brie doesn't have the technical pedigree to survive on the mat with a Hart."
"But Brie has heart, John!" Lawler fired back. "She has spent the last year fighting out from under her sister's shadow. She isn't going to quit!"
Brie fought from underneath with a desperate, fiery resilience. When Natalya tried to lock in a waist lock, Brie threw a series of sharp elbows to break the grip. Brie used her speed to frustrate the champion, hitting a beautiful, sliding clothesline, followed by a fierce missile dropkick off the second rope that scored a razor thin two count.
The Washington crowd rallied loudly behind the underdog, clapping a steady rhythm to keep Brie in the fight.
Natalya, growing visibly frustrated, decided it was time to end things. She caught a kick from Brie, spun her around, and violently swept her legs. The crowd gasped as Natalya stepped through, crossing Brie's legs and locking in the dreaded Sharpshooter dead in the center of the ring.
Brie shrieked in agony, her back arched at a sickening angle. Natalya sat back deep, applying maximum pressure to the lower spine.
"She's locked it in!" Cole panicked. "The Sharpshooter is applied! Brie Bella has nowhere to go!"
Brie pawed at the mat, tears streaming down her face. She looked at the ropes, which seemed miles away. The referee hovered closely, asking if she wanted to submit. Brie violently shook her head 'no'.
Relying on sheer willpower, Brie began to drag her body forward. Every inch was a grueling battle against Natalya's leverage. The fans were on their feet, screaming encouragement. Slowly, agonizingly, Brie pulled herself closer. With one final, desperate lunge, Brie shot her arm out and grabbed the bottom rope.
The referee instantly called for the break.
Natalya threw her hands up in disbelief, arguing with the official. The champion stalked back over, grabbing Brie by the hair and pulling her to her feet. Natalya wound up, looking to deliver her signature discus clothesline to knock Brie out cold.
But Brie saw it coming. She ducked underneath the heavy clothesline, grabbed Natalya around the head, and dropped violently to her knees, driving the champion face first into the mat with a picture perfect Bella Buster.
Brie rolled Natalya over and hooked the leg tightly, burying her face into the champion's shoulder.
"One! Two! Three!"
The bell rang, and a bright, triumphant pop anthem filled the arena.
Brie Bella rolled off the former champion and buried her face in her hands, completely overwhelmed with emotion. The referee retrieved the butterfly shaped Divas Championship and handed it to Brie. She clutched the gold to her chest, tears of joy streaming down her bruised cheeks as she climbed the turnbuckle and hoisted the title into the air.
"She did it!" Cole shouted, his voice thick with emotion. "Brie Bella has finally reached the mountaintop! After stepping out on her own, after proving she is more than just a the lesser twin sister, Brie Bella is the Divas Champion!"
"What an inspirational victory," Lawler applauded, beaming at the monitor. "She survived the Sharpshooter and shocked the world!"
The title matches continued in rapid, unpredictable succession.
Then came a shockwave that rattled the arena. Sheamus, the hard hitting Celtic Warrior, put his Intercontinental Championship on the line. The match was a brutal, stiff slugfest, but the ending left the crowd stunned. Out of nowhere, through the flames and the smoke, Kane materialized as the challenger.
The Big Red Monster absorbed a massive Brogue Kick, sat straight up, and caught Sheamus by the throat. One thunderous Chokeslam later, Kane pinned the Irishman, ripping the Intercontinental Championship away and taking the gold down to the depths of hell.
As Kanes's music faded, the lights in the Capital One Arena went completely black.
The fun, the athleticism, and the triumph of the mid-card instantly vanished, replaced by a heavy, suffocating dread. The time for wrestling had passed. It was time for war.
A sharp, wailing siren cut through the darkness. The harsh, aggressive theme music of the Nexus blasted through the stadium speakers.
The Washington D.C. crowd responded with the loudest, most unified chorus of hostile, venomous boos heard all night.
A single spotlight hit the top of the entrance ramp.
Standing shoulder to shoulder, wearing matching black t-shirts emblazoned with the bright yellow 'N', were the nine members of the Nexus. Wade Barrett stood dead center, his arms crossed over his chest, his chin tilted upward in a mask of absolute, supreme arrogance.
To his right stood the massive, unhinged Ryback, heavily breathing and cracking his thick knuckles. Beside him were Mason Ryan, David Otunga, and Michael Tarver. To Barrett's left were the dangerous specialists, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, Darren Young, and Curtis Axel.
They didn't play to the crowd. They didn't gesture. They moved down the ramp as a single, militaristic unit, their heavy boots marching in perfect, terrifying synchronization.
"Listen to the sheer hatred in this building," Cole said, his voice dropping to a serious, hushed tone. "These nine men have held Monday Night RAW hostage. They have put legends in the hospital. They have ruined careers. And tonight, they step into a sanctioned match to try and prove that they are the new, undisputed rulers of this company."
"They look like an execution squad," Lawler swallowed hard. "Look at the discipline. Wade Barrett has these young, hungry athletes completely brainwashed into believing they are unstoppable."
"Because they have been unstoppable, King," JBL retorted, refusing to break his serious demeanor. "They ended the God King's peace. They broke Brock Lesnar. They broke Bobby Lashley. If they win this Elimination match tonight, there is no one left to challenge them."
The Nexus surrounded the ring, sliding under the bottom rope and taking their places in their assigned corner. Wade Barrett stepped forward, resting his arms over the top rope, staring fiercely at the empty entrance stage.
He was waiting for Team RAW. He was waiting for John Cena, Randy Orton, Drew McIntyre, the Usos, and the New Day.
But most of all, the Nexus was waiting for the answer to the question that had kept the wrestling world guessing all week. The graphics on the TitanTron flashed the logo of Monday Night RAW, leaving a massive, before showing glaring question mark on the screen. Who was the ninth man? The crowd buzzed, their eyes glued to the curtain. The main event was officially here, and the survival of the entire locker room hung delicately in the balance.
