...

The Republic had come to reinforce the Castle, now it would have to fight for the right to reach it.

Soldiers stepped into the smoke.

Power Armor troops advanced at the center, heavy boots striking the broken ground as Brotherhood fire began snapping across the battlefield.

Sarah watched the first few seconds carefully.

She had no intention of throwing two hundred soldiers into one narrow corridor and hoping numbers would carry them through.

"Commanders, listen carefully."

Her radio clicked.

"This is Lyons. We're splitting the assault."

She pointed toward the left side of the battlefield.

"First element, take the left flank. Pin their infantry. Do not chase them. Keep them occupied."

A voice answered.

"Understood."

She turned toward the center.

"Second element advances behind the Power Armor. Stay tight. Use them as cover and push through the gaps they create."

"Copy."

Then she looked toward the opposite side.

"Third element swings around their right. I want Brandis worried about being surrounded. If he moves troops toward the Castle, make him pay for it."

Another acknowledgment came through.

Sarah looked toward the thirty-five Power Armor troops.

"You're the spearhead."

The armored soldiers continued forward.

"Break their strongest positions. Don't get trapped chasing isolated units. We need the line moving, not scattered."

A Power Armor commander raised a fist.

"Understood, General."

Sarah turned toward the six Sentinels.

"Armor commanders, spread out."

The tanks began repositioning.

"Mutual support. Engage their armor, heavy weapons, and fortified positions. Watch your angles."

She paused.

"And stay away from the Castle walls."

The response came immediately.

"Understood."

"I don't want one friendly shell landing inside that fortress."

"Understood, General."

Above them, the Vertibirds swept across the sky.

Sarah looked upward.

"Air units, stay active. Hit anything trying to reinforce Brandis. Disrupt their movement and keep eyes on the battlefield. If they try to swing around our flanks, stop them."

One pilot answered.

"Three-One has visual on Brotherhood movement north of the engagement."

"Keep them from reaching Brandis."

"Copy."

The battle shifted again.

The Republic left flank pushed forward through ruined streets and broken concrete, infantry firing from behind overturned vehicles and shattered walls.

The Brotherhood answered with concentrated rifle fire.

Sarah saw several Republic soldiers drop behind cover.

A medic sprinted toward one of them.

The advance slowed.

Sarah raised her radio.

"Left element, maintain pressure. Don't stall."

The reply came strained.

"They've got a machine-gun position covering the street."

"Power Armor commander, send two squads left."

"Moving."

Sarah watched as two groups of armored soldiers broke away from the main spearhead.

Their weapons opened almost simultaneously.

The Brotherhood machine-gun position disappeared behind dust and fragments.

The Republic infantry surged forward again.

"That's better," Sarah muttered.

Behind them, the central formation was making slower progress.

The Power Armor troops were taking the heaviest fire.

Brotherhood weapons hammered their armor.

Rounds sparked against plating.

One armored soldier staggered but remained upright.

He raised his weapon and fired back.

The return burst tore through a Brotherhood firing position.

"Central, don't outrun your support," Sarah ordered.

A commander answered.

"We're holding."

"Good. Keep it controlled."

Sarah glanced toward the third element.

They were moving wider than the others, forcing the Brotherhood to keep troops facing both directions.

That was exactly what she wanted.

Brandis had built his blocking line to stop a frontal assault.

Now there wasn't one.

There were three.

And the Castle defenders were still firing into his rear.

Sarah looked toward the six Sentinels.

The tanks had found their positions.

One fired.

The shell struck a Brotherhood armored vehicle and flipped it sideways.

Another Sentinel fired at a reinforced firing position.

The impact threw debris across the road.

A third tank shifted slightly, covering the infantry's advance.

Sarah nodded.

"That's it."

Then she saw movement on the far side.

"Air."

A Vertibird banked sharply.

"Multiple Brotherhood units moving toward Brandis."

Sarah grabbed the radio.

"Three-One, intercept."

"Already on it."

The aircraft dropped lower.

Its guns opened.

Brotherhood soldiers scattered from the road as the Vertibird passed overhead.

Another aircraft followed, forcing a second group into cover.

For a moment, the Republic controlled the rhythm.

Not the battlefield.

Not yet.

But the rhythm.

Sarah looked toward the Castle.

The fortress was still several hundred meters away.

Ronnie was still inside.

And Sarah wasn't going to command the defense from a distance.

She turned to the officers nearest her.

"I'm going to the Castle."

One of them looked at her.

"General, the line is still moving."

"I know."

"You shouldn't go alone."

"I won't."

She pointed toward several Humvees.

"Four vehicles with me."

The officer hesitated.

"That's a small escort."

"That's the point."

Sarah looked toward the battlefield.

"Brandis knows we're trying to reach the Castle. The bigger force needs to keep him busy."

She raised her radio.

"Second and third elements, continue your advance. Don't follow me."

"Yes, General."

"Left element, keep their infantry pinned."

"Understood."

"Power Armor stays with the main assault."

"Copy."

Sarah looked toward the Sentinels.

"Armor commanders, keep firing support. Watch your angles."

"Yes, General."

Then she turned toward the Humvees.

"Let's go."

Four vehicles accelerated.

Sarah's Humvee took the lead.

The others followed in staggered formation rather than driving directly behind one another.

They crossed a stretch of open ground.

Immediately, Brotherhood fire came toward them.

Rounds struck the dirt.

One hit the Humvee's side armor with a sharp metallic crack.

The gunner on top returned fire.

"Contact, right!"

The machine gun roared.

Sarah ducked briefly as another burst passed over the windshield.

"Keep moving!"

The driver pushed harder.

The Humvee bounced over a crater.

Sarah looked through the side opening.

A Brotherhood soldier was trying to reposition behind a concrete barrier.

She fired.

The soldier disappeared from view.

"Keep your eyes open," she said.

The convoy veered left.

A second Humvee fired its machine gun toward a ruined building.

The gunner shouted.

"Movement upstairs!"

"Suppress it!"

Rounds ripped through the windows.

The vehicles continued.

Behind them, the battlefield thundered.

Sentinel cannons.

Infantry weapons.

Power Armor guns.

Vertibird fire.

The Castle's defenders.

All of it blended into one enormous roar.

Sarah raised the radio.

"Central, status."

A voice came through.

"We've reached their first defensive position. Power Armor is pushing through."

"Don't advance too far."

"Understood."

"Left element?"

"Still pinning them."

"Good."

She switched frequencies.

"Armor?"

"Three Brotherhood vehicles disabled. One heavy weapons position destroyed."

"Keep supporting the infantry."

"Copy."

Then the Humvee jolted violently.

A round struck the front armor.

The driver swore.

Sarah grabbed the side handle.

"Damage?"

"Minor!"

"Keep going."

The fourth Humvee fired over them.

Sarah could see Brotherhood soldiers turning.

They had noticed her.

That was inevitable.

A small convoy moving toward the Castle was easier to identify than hundreds of soldiers fighting in the smoke.

"General," the gunner said.

"What?"

"They're redirecting."

Sarah looked ahead.

Several Brotherhood Power Armor troops were breaking away from their defensive line.

"They know."

The driver looked at her.

"Do we turn back?"

"No."

Sarah's voice was calm.

"We keep moving."

The Humvees accelerated.

The Brotherhood troops opened fire.

Heavy rounds tore into the ground around the vehicles.

One struck a Humvee behind Sarah's vehicle, sending sparks across its armor.

"Keep formation!"

The convoy split around a crater.

Two vehicles went left.

Two went right.

Then they came back together farther ahead.

Sarah grabbed the radio.

"Third element, they're redirecting troops toward me."

The answer came quickly.

"Do you want us to pull them back?"

"No."

Sarah looked toward the Castle.

"I want you to make them regret leaving."

"Understood."

She switched channels.

"Power Armor commander."

"Go."

"Push harder. Brandis is weakening his line to stop us."

"Then we're going through."

Sarah almost smiled.

"That's what I wanted to hear."

Another explosion rocked the road.

A Brotherhood shell had landed close.

The Humvee swerved.

Sarah braced herself.

"Drive!"

The driver corrected.

They kept going.

The Castle was getting closer.

Sarah could now see individual defenders on the walls.

She could see Ronnie's soldiers.

They were exhausted.

Some were firing from damaged positions.

Others carried ammunition between firing points.

Medics were working beside the walls.

A section of fortification had partially collapsed.

Sarah's expression tightened.

"Come on."

She raised the radio.

"Castle, this is Lyons."

Static.

She tried again.

"Castle, this is General Lyons. Do you copy?"

For several seconds there was nothing.

Then:

"Lyons, this is Castle."

Ronnie.

Sarah exhaled.

"Ronnie."

"About time you got here."

Despite everything, Sarah smiled.

"I've been busy."

"You brought half the Republic with you?"

"Close enough."

Ronnie's voice became more serious.

"We're still holding."

"I can see that."

"We've taken casualties."

"How bad?"

"Bad enough."

Sarah looked toward the walls.

"Give me the details."

"Several sections are damaged. West wall took the worst of it. We're burning ammunition faster than I like."

"Medical?"

"Working."

"Can you hold?"

Ronnie was silent for a moment.

Then she answered.

"Yes."

Sarah knew that tone.

Ronnie wasn't saying it because she was certain.

She was saying it because she refused to say anything else.

Sarah looked toward the approaching gate.

"We're coming inside."

Ronnie laughed once.

"Good."

"I need the gate prepared."

"Already opening it."

"Keep your people clear of the vehicles."

"Understood."

"And Ronnie?"

"Yes?"

"Don't stop firing."

There was another short laugh.

"Wasn't planning to."

The radio went quiet.

Sarah looked ahead.

The Castle gate was visible through the smoke.

Republic defenders were gathering around it.

Some waved their weapons.

Others shouted directions.

The Humvees accelerated.

Behind Sarah, the larger battle continued to rage.

Brandis's forces had not collapsed.

If anything, the fighting had intensified.

The central Republic formation had pushed deeply into the Brotherhood line, but Brandis had reinforced the threatened sector.

Power Armor clashed at close range.

Brotherhood weapons hammered the Republic spearhead.

Sentinel shells continued striking enemy armor.

The Vertibirds kept moving overhead, attacking reinforcement groups whenever they appeared.

And from the Castle walls, Ronnie's soldiers poured fire into the Brotherhood positions.

Sarah looked back once.

The battlefield stretched behind her.

She could see the Republic line advancing.

She could see Brandis's defensive formation bending but not breaking.

She could see one Vertibird banking sharply while another attacked a Brotherhood convoy.

The Republic was fighting hard.

But Sarah knew the battle wasn't decided.

Reaching the Castle was only the first step.

She turned forward again.

"Prepare to enter."

The driver nodded.

The gate began opening.

Sarah's Humvee passed through.

The other vehicles followed.

Inside, the atmosphere was completely different.

The noise of the battle remained deafening, but the defenders were no longer simply waiting for relief.

They were seeing it.

Sarah stepped from the Humvee.

Ronnie approached from the wall, rifle still in her hands.

For a moment, the two women simply looked at each other.

"You look terrible," Sarah said.

Ronnie gave a tired smile.

"So do you."

Sarah looked past her.

"Damage?"

Ronnie turned.

"Come see."

They moved together toward the inner courtyard.

The Castle had paid for every hour of the siege.

A section of wall was blackened.

Several defensive positions had been destroyed.

A vehicle lay burned near one of the gates.

Medical personnel were treating wounded soldiers beneath a temporary shelter.

Ammunition crates were being opened almost as quickly as they arrived.

Ronnie pointed toward the western wall.

"They concentrated there for most of the attack."

Sarah nodded.

"Brandis?"

"Leading the force outside."

"I know."

Ronnie looked toward the gate.

"How much of your army is still with him?"

"Most of it."

"Then we're not out of this."

"No."

Sarah looked at her.

"But now they have a problem."

Ronnie smiled.

"Two problems?"

Sarah nodded toward the walls.

"You."

Ronnie looked toward the gate.

"And you."

"Exactly."

Another explosion shook the fortress.

Dust fell from the stonework.

Ronnie looked upward.

"They're still coming."

Sarah tightened her grip on her rifle.

"Let them."

Ronnie studied her.

"What are you thinking?"

Sarah looked toward the damaged walls, then toward the battlefield beyond them.

"We link the defense."

Ronnie nodded slowly.

"Inside and outside."

"Exactly."

Sarah raised her radio.

"Sanctuary, this is Lyons."

Static.

Then Sico's voice.

"Sarah."

"We're inside."

There was a brief silence.

Sico exhaled.

"Good."

"Castle is damaged, but holding."

"How bad?"

"Wounded, ammunition expenditure is high, several fortification sections compromised. But Ronnie has control of the defenders."

Ronnie glanced at Sarah.

"Tell him we're not surrendering."

Sarah smiled faintly.

"She says she's not surrendering."

Sico's voice came back.

"I expected nothing less."

Sarah looked toward the walls.

"Brandis has committed a substantial blocking force against us. We're engaging them outside."

"Can you hold?"

Sarah looked at Ronnie.

Then at the battered fortress.

Then at the soldiers preparing fresh ammunition.

"Yes."

She paused.

"But we need to coordinate everything from here."

Sico understood immediately.

"I'll keep Sanctuary connected."

"Good."

Sarah lowered the radio.

Ronnie looked at her.

"So."

Sarah looked toward the gate.

The sound of gunfire rolled across the fortress.

"You ready?"

Ronnie smiled.

"I've been ready."

Sarah gave a quiet laugh.

"Then let's get everyone on the same page."

They walked toward the command position together.

Outside, Brandis's Brotherhood force was still fighting.

Inside, the Castle defenders were preparing for another assault.

And now the two Republic forces were no longer separate.

Sarah had reached Ronnie.

The Castle had received its reinforcements.

The Republic's army had established a foothold around the fortress.

But Brandis had not broken.

The Brotherhood line remained between Sarah's main force and the wider routes around Boston.

The next phase would be harder.

Because now both sides understood exactly what was at stake.

For the Brotherhood, the Castle was an opportunity to punish the Republic for Cambridge and protect the approaches to Boston Airport.

For the Republic, it was no longer simply a fortress under attack.

It was the point where the Brotherhood's retaliation had to be stopped.

Sarah looked through a damaged firing slit toward the battlefield.

The Republic infantry was still advancing.

Power Armor pushed against Brandis's line.

Sentinel tanks fired in controlled volleys.

Vertibirds swept overhead.

Ronnie stood beside her.

"How long do you think this lasts?"

Sarah watched another Brotherhood position erupt under Sentinel fire.

"As long as it takes."

Ronnie nodded.

"That sounds like a terrible answer."

"It is."

Sarah checked her rifle.

"But it's the honest one."

Another burst of gunfire erupted outside.

Neither woman moved.

They had the walls.

They had the reinforcements.

They had each other.

Now they had to make it count.

Then the command position came alive almost immediately.

As Ronnie stepped toward the nearest radio operator.

"Get every squad leader on the Castle frequency."

The operator reached for the controls.

"One by one or all at once?"

"All at once."

Static filled the room.

Then voices began answering.

"West wall, ready."

"South battery, ready."

"Medical station listening."

"East parapet, standing by."

Ronnie looked toward Sarah.

Sarah was already studying the battlefield beyond the damaged walls.

The Brotherhood line had not broken.

But it had begun to bend.

That was enough.

For now.

Ronnie raised the radio.

"Everyone listen."

The fortress seemed to quiet around her, even though gunfire continued outside.

"We've spent the last several hours letting them come to us."

A burst of gunfire cracked from the western wall.

Ronnie waited for it to pass.

"That ends now."

Sarah glanced at her.

Ronnie continued.

"Reclaim the damaged positions. Push them away from the walls. Do not chase beyond effective range. We take back our ground, then we hold it."

A voice answered.

"What about the southern approach?"

"Clear it."

"Yes, General."

"West wall?"

"We're moving."

"Go."

Ronnie lowered the radio.

"Let's make them regret coming here."

The defenders moved.

It wasn't a reckless charge.

They were too tired for that, and Ronnie knew it.

Instead, soldiers emerged from protected positions in small groups, moving from one cratered firing point to another. Engineers followed behind them, carrying tools and replacement components. Riflemen provided covering fire while machine-gun crews shifted toward newly recovered positions.

A damaged section of wall that had been abandoned earlier in the battle suddenly became occupied again.

A Republic soldier climbed over the rubble and raised his rifle.

"Position secured!"

Ronnie heard it through the radio.

"Hold it."

"We're holding."

Outside the fortress, Sarah was doing much the same thing.

She stood beside her Humvee, watching the Brotherhood line through the smoke.

"Central element, advance."

The reply came immediately.

"Moving."

"Left flank, increase pressure."

"We're pushing."

"Power Armor, concentrate on their center."

A pause.

"Understood."

Sarah looked toward the Sentinels.

"Armor, give them room to move."

The tanks shifted.

One Sentinel fired.

The shell struck a Brotherhood barricade.

Another tank fired seconds later, hitting an armored vehicle attempting to reposition.

The Brotherhood vehicle caught fire.

Its crew abandoned it.

Republic infantry surged past.

The battlefield began moving east.

Not quickly.

Not cleanly.

But unmistakably.

The Brotherhood was giving ground.

A Republic Power Armor soldier fired a heavy weapon into a ruined building.

The upper floor collapsed outward.

"Move!"

Infantry rushed through the opening.

A Brotherhood squad fired from the street.

The Republic soldiers dropped behind cover and returned fire.

Nobody advanced until the position was suppressed.

Then they moved again.

Sarah watched the sequence unfold.

It wasn't elegant.

War rarely was.

It was methodical.

Pressure.

Cover.

Movement.

Pressure again.

The Castle defenders were doing the same thing behind the Brotherhood.

Ronnie stood at the western parapet as her soldiers reclaimed another section.

"Don't overextend!" she shouted.

A young soldier looked back.

"General, they're running!"

"Let them run."

She pointed toward the distant enemy.

"We're not giving them the Castle twice."

The soldier nodded.

"Yes, ma'am."

Another explosion shook the wall.

Ronnie ducked instinctively.

Dust fell around her.

When she looked up, the defenders were still there.

The Republic flag above the fortress snapped violently in the hot wind.

It was battered.

The pole was scarred.

But it remained.

Ronnie looked toward the battlefield.

Sarah's forces were pushing harder now.

The Vertibirds were making repeated passes overhead.

One swept low across the Brotherhood flank, forcing a group of soldiers to scatter into ruined buildings.

Another attacked an armored column attempting to reposition.

The Republic infantry took advantage immediately.

"Keep moving!" an officer shouted.

The soldiers advanced.

The Brotherhood line contracted.

For the first time since the siege had begun, Brandis was losing the initiative.

He knew it.

His officers knew it.

And the soldiers in the line knew it.

Paladin Brandis stood behind a damaged armored vehicle, watching through his helmet's optics.

The Castle was no longer being isolated.

The Republic force outside had become too strong.

The defenders inside had regained several firing positions.

Every attempt to reinforce the siege was being punished from the air.

Every attempt to push toward the walls met increasingly organized resistance.

Brandis watched another Sentinel shell tear apart a Brotherhood defensive position.

"Status."

His communications officer answered.

"West formation is falling back."

"Why?"

"Republic infantry broke through the secondary line."

"Can they counterattack?"

"They're trying."

Brandis looked toward the Castle.

Another wave of Republic fire erupted from the walls.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"They can't."

The officer hesitated.

"Paladin?"

Brandis lowered his weapon.

"We're losing the position."

The words were difficult to say.

But pretending otherwise would cost lives.

He looked toward Boston Airport.

The Brotherhood had begun the assault expecting the Castle to fall before the Republic could respond.

Instead, Sarah Lyons had arrived with an army.

Now that army was driving them away from the fortress.

Brandis made his decision.

"Prepare withdrawal."

The officer stared at him.

"Withdrawal?"

"Organized withdrawal."

A pause.

"Toward the airport?"

"Yes."

Brandis looked back at the Castle.

"We're not running."

He turned toward his commanders.

"We're leaving before this becomes a rout."

The order traveled through the Brotherhood network.

"Fall back."

Then again.

"Fall back toward the airport."

"Cover the armor."

"Power Armor, rear guard."

"Keep the heavy weapons firing."

The Brotherhood withdrawal began.

It wasn't chaotic.

Brandis was too experienced for that.

Heavy weapons teams stayed behind long enough to cover the movement of infantry.

Power Armor troops formed small rear-guard groups.

Armored vehicles withdrew in sequence.

Infantry moved from one position to another, firing short bursts before retreating.

Sarah noticed almost immediately.

"They're moving."

Her officer looked through binoculars.

"East."

"Toward Boston Airport."

"Yes."

Sarah raised the radio.

"All units, they're withdrawing."

A cheer almost broke through the channel.

Sarah stopped it before it could become complacency.

"Listen to me. This is not permission to chase them into hell."

The radio went quiet.

"Humvee units, pursue at controlled distance. Harass them, don't become separated."

"Yes, General."

"Do not cross into unknown territory."

"Understood."

She switched frequencies.

"Air units, follow the withdrawal. Hit exposed vehicles and isolated formations. Keep your distance from friendly troops."

"Copy."

Sarah looked toward the Castle.

Ronnie was standing on the wall.

Sarah raised her radio.

"Castle, they're withdrawing."

Ronnie watched the distant movement.

"I see them."

"Your call."

Ronnie considered it.

Then she answered.

"Everyone, maintain fire."

The defenders opened up.

But they didn't leave the walls.

They fired only while the Brotherhood remained within effective range.

Once the enemy began moving beyond that distance, Ronnie raised her hand.

"Hold!"

The gunfire from the fortress gradually diminished.

A soldier looked toward her.

"Shouldn't we chase them?"

Ronnie shook her head.

"No."

"But—"

"We almost lost this fortress."

She looked toward the battered walls.

"I'm not risking it because somebody wants a satisfying ending."

The soldier nodded.

Ronnie returned her attention to the retreat.

"Let them go."

Outside, the Humvees were moving after the withdrawing Brotherhood units.

Their machine guns fired short bursts whenever an enemy vehicle exposed itself.

One Brotherhood truck swerved away from the road.

A Republic gunner fired.

The truck disappeared behind a ruined building.

"Don't chase," Sarah ordered.

The driver slowed.

Another Humvee moved past them and fired at a Brotherhood position covering the retreat.

The enemy returned fire.

Rounds struck the ground.

Sarah watched the distance carefully.

They were approaching the point where pursuit could become dangerous.

"Humvee One, status."

"Still moving."

"Any signs of an ambush?"

"Nothing confirmed."

"Then don't give them the chance."

She raised the radio.

"Break pursuit by the next intersection."

There was a pause.

"General?"

"You heard me."

"Yes, ma'am."

Above them, the Vertibirds continued their work.

One descended low enough to scatter a Brotherhood infantry group.

Another fired on an abandoned armored vehicle being used as cover.

Then the aircraft pulled away.

Sarah watched the retreating Brotherhood column disappear deeper into the city.

"Air units, begin breaking off."

"Copy."

"Keep them under observation until they're out of immediate contact."

"Understood."

The battle was ending.

Not because the Brotherhood had been destroyed.

Because they had decided staying was more dangerous than leaving.

Sarah lowered her rifle.

For the first time in hours, she could hear something besides continuous gunfire.

The wind.

The distant engines.

The groan of damaged machinery.

People breathing heavily.

A wounded soldier calling for a medic.

The sounds of a battlefield after the worst of the violence had passed.

Sarah looked toward the Castle.

The fortress was still standing.

Smoke drifted from several sections of the wall.

One of the defensive towers had been badly damaged.

A burned vehicle remained near the entrance.

Spent ammunition casings covered the ground.

There were bodies.

Too many.

Medics moved among them.

Engineers were already inspecting the walls.

Sarah walked toward the gate.

Ronnie met her halfway.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Ronnie looked exhausted.

Sarah probably looked worse.

"You chased them?" Ronnie asked.

"Briefly."

"How briefly?"

"Long enough to make sure they knew they couldn't just turn around."

Ronnie nodded.

"Good."

"We broke off before they could pull us into an ambush."

"Better."

Sarah glanced at the fortress.

"How bad?"

Ronnie looked around.

"Bad."

Sarah waited.

Ronnie sighed.

"But we're here."

That was enough.

They walked together through the courtyard.

The aftermath was everywhere.

Soldiers were gathering discarded Brotherhood weapons.

A mechanic was inspecting a damaged Humvee.

Engineers were stacking fresh materials near the worst-hit section of the wall.

Medical teams were separating the wounded according to severity.

Ammunition officers counted remaining crates.

One soldier sat against the wall with his helmet beside him, staring at nothing.

Sarah stopped.

"You all right?"

The soldier looked up.

"Yes, General."

"You sure?"

He hesitated.

"Tired."

Sarah nodded.

"That's allowed."

The soldier gave a faint smile.

"Thank you."

Sarah moved on.

Ronnie watched her.

"You're going to inspect everything personally, aren't you?"

"Yes."

"You're impossible."

"So I've been told."

They reached the western wall.

The damage was worse from close range.

A section had been blown apart and temporarily reinforced with steel beams.

Sandbags filled gaps where stone had collapsed.

A machine gun sat on a makeshift platform.

Ronnie rested her hand against the damaged masonry.

"They came close."

Sarah looked toward the battlefield.

"Very."

Ronnie was quiet.

"For a while, I thought we'd lose this place."

Sarah turned toward her.

"You didn't."

"Not today."

Sarah nodded.

"Not today."

Ronnie looked toward the distant road.

"They'll remember this."

"Brandis?"

"Him. All of them."

Sarah didn't disagree.

"Cambridge made this personal."

Ronnie looked at her.

"This wasn't already personal?"

Sarah gave a tired smile.

"Fair point."

They stood silently for a moment.

Beyond the walls, Republic soldiers were beginning to relax.

Not celebrate.

Not yet.

They were too tired.

Too aware of what the battle had cost.

Some sat beside vehicles.

Others checked weapons.

A few simply drank water and stared toward the horizon.

The last Brotherhood movement had disappeared toward Boston Airport.

The battlefield was quieting.

Slowly.

Reluctantly.

Sarah looked upward.

A Vertibird passed overhead.

Its engines were softer now, no longer racing toward a target.

The aircraft circled the Castle once before heading back toward Sanctuary.

Ronnie watched it.

"That's the last one?"

"For now."

The Republic flag continued flying above them.

Its edges were torn.

The fabric was stained with soot.

But it remained high above the fortress.

Sarah looked toward the route leading toward Boston Airport.

Somewhere beyond those ruins, Brandis was reorganizing his survivors.

He would report what had happened.

He would explain why the Castle still stood.

And the Brotherhood would learn something important.

The Republic was no longer merely taking positions.

It could reinforce them.

It could coordinate forces.

It could respond quickly.

And it could fight its way into a battlefield before a fortress fell.

But Sarah knew the lesson went both ways.

The Brotherhood had nearly taken the Castle.

They had forced the Republic to commit hundreds of soldiers, armor, aircraft, ammunition, fuel, and medical resources just to keep it.

That meant the next attack could be worse.

Ronnie seemed to be thinking the same thing.

"They'll come again."

Sarah nodded.

"Probably."

"When?"

"No idea."

Ronnie looked toward the damaged walls.

"Then we'd better repair this before they do."

Sarah smiled faintly.

"Now you're thinking like a general."

Ronnie snorted.

"I've been thinking like one all morning."

"Fair."

An engineer approached them.

"Generals."

Both women turned.

"Yes?"

"We've got the worst wall section stabilized."

Ronnie nodded.

"How long before permanent repairs?"

"Depends on materials."

Sarah glanced toward the surviving vehicles.

"Supply request already sent?"

"Yes."

"Good."

The engineer looked relieved.

"There's another problem."

Ronnie sighed.

"Of course there is."

"Several ammunition stores are running low."

Sarah looked at Ronnie.

Ronnie looked back.

Then Sarah reached for her radio.

"Sanctuary, this is Lyons."

Sico answered almost immediately.

"Sarah."

"The Castle is secure."

A long breath came over the radio.

"Casualties?"

"Still being counted."

"Understood."

"We'll need ammunition, engineering materials, medical supplies, and fuel."

"I'll get them moving."

Sarah looked toward the fortress.

"And Sico?"

"Yes?"

"We stopped them."

There was a pause.

"I know."

"They're heading back toward Boston Airport."

"I know."

Sarah looked at Ronnie.

"But they came close."

Sico's voice softened.

"Then we'll make sure they don't get that close again."

Sarah lowered the radio.

Ronnie gave her a tired smile.

"That's probably the closest thing to a promise we get around here."

Sarah smiled back.

"Probably."

The two women stood at the wall as the afternoon light began settling across the battlefield.

The smoke was thinning.

The gunfire had almost completely stopped.

Republic soldiers moved through the wreckage, collecting weapons, checking abandoned Brotherhood equipment, treating wounded comrades, and repairing what could be repaired.

The Castle had survived.

But it had not escaped untouched.

Neither had the men and women who defended it.

Sarah looked once more toward Boston Airport.

The last Vertibird crossed the sky overhead, banking toward Sanctuary.

Below it, the Republic flag continued to fly.

Ronnie folded her arms.

"You think this counts as a victory?"

Sarah considered the question.

Then she looked around at the wounded.

The damaged walls.

The exhausted soldiers.

The ammunition crates being counted.

The engineers already rebuilding.

"Yes," she said finally.

"But not the kind we celebrate."

Ronnie nodded.

"The kind we survive."

Sarah looked toward the horizon.

"Exactly."

For now, the Brotherhood had withdrawn.

For now, the Castle remained in Republic hands.

For now, the soldiers could breathe.

But neither woman mistook silence for peace.

Brandis was alive.

The Brotherhood still held Boston Airport.

Cambridge remained a fresh wound in the larger conflict.

And the roads between those positions had just become the front line of a war that was expanding by the day.

Sarah watched the distant route until the last traces of the withdrawing Brotherhood disappeared beyond the ruins.

Then she turned back toward the fortress.

"Come on."

Ronnie raised an eyebrow.

"Where?"

"We've got a wall to rebuild."

Ronnie looked around at the battered Castle.

Then at the exhausted soldiers already working.

A faint smile appeared.

"Now that sounds familiar."

Together, they walked back into the courtyard.

Around them, the Republic began the quiet work that followed every battle.

The dead would be identified.

The wounded would be treated.

The ammunition would be counted.

The vehicles would be repaired.

The walls would be rebuilt.

Reports would be written.

Families would eventually receive news.

And somewhere at Boston Airport, the Brotherhood would be doing much the same thing.

The battle was over.

The war was not.

Above the battered Castle, the Republic flag continued to move in the wind.

And for the first time since the attack began, nobody was trying to tear it down.
