Third Person POV
Twins, 300 AC.
---------------------------------------
In the morning, Jon had Arya's help to put his armor back on after sleeping in his own tent, not giving up his bed that was more comfortable than any other he would find in that castle.
And then he went to have his first meal, eating calmly with his people. Afterward, he returned to the camp, and as he passed by the entrance of the conquered tower, he once again observed the Frey men who had been captured, deciding to begin his investigation.
Even the servants were being kept together with the men there. "Let's begin by interrogating the Freys' sons. Prepare them and bring them to me one at a time," Jon said as he headed toward a corner of the camp, where a special tent had been set up.
The other men moved to carry out their orders, with only his royal guards accompanying him, along with Arya and Jorelle as well.
"Your Majesty, the Mallister men are practically blending in with us. Should we stop that?" a dwarf approached Jon at that moment.
Jon thought for a bit. "There's no need for that, as long as they don't try anything hostile or get in our way. Leave them be," Jon shrugged while the man nodded.
He arrived at the tent that was supposed to be the king's main meeting area, since they had not originally planned to launch the attack the moment they arrived at the Twins.
There, Jon settled into a chair already prepared for him by his men and simply waited until they started bringing in the first Freys.
One of the direwolves entered the tent. A brown wolf that had not yet reached adulthood, but was already over six feet tall. Even so, it was perfect for that moment.
It settled beside the king, lying down on the carpet beneath the chair.
Jon would need a direwolf at that moment. Ghost could even fit inside the Freys' banquet hall because the doors were large enough for him to pass through, but the tent was different. Besides, he did not want to terrify his own guests by having a giant monster standing before them.
The first man was brought in, trembling with fear as he stood before the king, who stared at him, studying him.
"Tell me your name," Jon raised his voice while the man seemed lost.
He did not know why he had been brought there, but he knew that the man before him was the man everyone called king!
His eyes also constantly drifted toward the direwolf lying beside the king's chair, and when he looked back at the king, he only saw him staring with a bored expression, waiting for him to answer.
"My lord... I..." he tried to speak, but was immediately interrupted.
"King of Arctic. Remember that, Frey," it was Barristan who spoke this time from one of the corners, ready to act if anyone moved against the king.
Jon said nothing, but he was impressed as he thought about the former knight of the Kingsguard and Westeros. Barristan had been willing to serve him from the moment they met, but certainly the role of Arctic's Royal Guard had suited him quite well over these past moons, ever since he decided to swear loyalty to Arctic's sovereign.
"Your Majesty," he quickly corrected himself, while looking at Jon with an expression already begging for mercy. "My name is Waltyr Frey. I am the thirteenth son," he said. "What does Your Majesty plan to do with me?"
Jon did not answer immediately. He stared at him for a few seconds before picking up a letter at his side.
"This says that your father, together with the Lannisters and the Boltons, planned to launch an attack in the middle of Edmure's wedding feast. I wonder... did the entire castle know about this?"
"I don't know what Your Majesty is talking about," the man said immediately.
"Oh, really? This letter proves that your father was planning to do it. Besides being his handwriting... there are other letters written in Tywin's hand. I seized all of these letters before they could destroy the evidence."
"I... I didn't know about this, my lord," he answered at once.
Jon let out a faint smile. "Do you know why my wolf is by my side?" he asked.
The man looked at the wolf, which was not baring its teeth nor making any ferocious sounds, but its eyes were intense.
"I-I don't know, Your Majesty."
"My wolf can hear heartbeats. You should understand that animals have very good instincts... much better than humans in many ways... He has the intuition to know when a person is lying or not. And I know, Waltyr... I know that you are a liar. Men."
The words simply echoed through the tent, and the men understood the order. Those same men who had brought him grabbed him and began dragging him outside while he looked terrified.
"No! No! I wasn't lying! Fine, I'll tell you! I'll tell you!" he began to scream, trying to avoid an even worse punishment, wherever they were taking him.
But Jon no longer cared. "Take him away. Call the next one."
One after another, the Freys were brought before him. The same question was asked.
Jon did not let the others see what happened to the previous ones, since they were taking them all to another part of the camp.
Once again, another Frey began to lie, and Jon observed everything through the wolf's instincts.
Another one was taken away, while the next was brought in. Those Freys who had been inside the castle and were being brought over began to grow extremely afraid, seeing the large number of brothers and uncles disappearing each time they were called, with no one ever returning.
They could only expect one kind of execution. Crying and small struggles to avoid being taken away began.
And as the questions were asked, some confessed immediately. They said that although not all the soldiers had any idea of what would happen, many did know, and all of them would obey their lord's orders.
Jon wanted to hear every single one of them, but as he questioned them, he realized there was no one there who would have had the courage to stop what they were about to do to Robb and his men. The only reason it never happened was because Robb managed to see through the scheme with the warg abilities he had learned from Arya in Winterfell.
"They are all rotten," Jon murmured in the end, when another man was brought in. This one seemed to know he was going to die, because he entered full of rage.
"So you're the North's little whore?" this Frey simply spat on the ground as he was forced to his knees in front of Jon. "I heard your pregnant prostitutes were beautiful a few years ago. I would love to—" He did not even get to finish.
The direwolf beside Jon lunged at the man, grabbing him by the throat.
The expression of disdain he had been using to provoke Jon turned into horror when the creature's teeth sank into his neck and threw him to the ground.
The man began to scream, and the wolf transformed from the calm expression it had shown until then, passing by all the Freys, into a fierce and murderous monster that now violently shook the man's neck to tear it open even further before everyone's eyes.
Jon silently watched the man scream in despair until he finally fell silent.
"That wasn't how he was supposed to die, but there are always some fools," Jon said while the wolf released the corpse before him and stared at him with blood covering its teeth and muzzle.
"Go wash yourself in the river. Actually... it would be better to pass by the Frey men first. I'm sure they heard the screams. They'll love seeing what happened to one of their brothers," Jon mocked cruelly.
Even Arya raised an eyebrow, surprised by that. Jon had been quite cruel with it. But no one said anything about it.
"Let's get this over with already. Why drag this out, right? Let's take all the Freys back to the tower," Jon decided to put an end to it, already hearing some screams and groans from the Freys, who were now seeing the blood-covered wolf passing by them.
"Let's go," Jon said, and everyone followed him as he returned inside the tower while his men took charge of bringing the Freys of noble blood.
But not before exchanging a glance with his commanders. "Execute all the prisoners," he gave the order.
His men nodded. There were many Frey soldiers, at least four hundred of them who had been captured alive.
The other tower saw the movement while the entrance to the western tower was opened. The king came out accompanied by his men, under the gaze of the Freys hiding in the eastern tower.
Jon stopped a few meters from the entrance while observing the river. At some point, the Twins certainly had their usefulness, but that did not stop them from building other bridges in the future, so he did not mind making them disappear from the map.
Ghost also appeared at his side while Jon stroked the animal's muzzle.
A horn was sounded from the other tower. It was obvious they had been watched the entire time. A flag of peace was raised.
"So that's how it is..." Jon thought, but shook his head. "Show them a white flag and burn it. There will be no negotiation," he simply ordered the men accompanying him.
His men did exactly that. They took a white flag, set it on fire, and waved it in response to the Freys' white flag, which sought negotiation.
There would be no more negotiations.
First, they had broken the banner of peace. Then came the discoveries about their intention to violate guest rights once Robb arrived at Edmure's wedding.
All the Freys should expect now was chaos and destruction.
"The men are already being brought over, my king," someone soon came to report while all the Frey sons were being escorted in.
"Good. Everyone, prepare yourselves."
The Freys who had spoken with the king and those who had not yet been called were surprised when they were brought there, while they began being placed in the middle of the bridge, each Arctican man holding one of them.
"You don't need to see this," Jon turned to Arya. She had already seen the scene with the wolf before.
She shook her head. "No. I'll stay," she said firmly.
Jon nodded and turned back toward the Freys, ignoring the looks and questions coming from the men. They wanted to know why they were being forced to kneel before the tower, where their father was probably watching from one of the windows as the Arcticans positioned his sons and grandsons over the age of eighteen.
"Walder Frey!" Jon raised his voice.
They already knew exactly which window of the distant tower the old weasel would be hiding behind.
"It wasn't enough for your cursed son to try attacking us under a banner of peace, but I also discovered some very interesting things thanks to these letters," Jon raised a hand holding a piece of paper.
"This says that you planned to break guest rights against the Northerners when they entered the Twins during Edmure's wedding to your daughter Roslin."
"I admit it... you truly are known as a senile old weasel, and that nickname suits you very well."
"You planned to violate guest rights, and you know what that means. Even going against the gods themselves. I can count on one hand how many sins would be considered greater than this, and every one of them results in the death of even entire families."
"That is why, even if you have not yet acted, this was something you planned together with Tywin, the Boltons, and the Lannisters. I condemn you."
"To begin with, every adult person here before us who was aware of what was going to happen. From what I could tell, many laughed and longed for the massacre of the Northerners. Many eagerly awaited the Wedding where you planned your vile acts..."
"I have absolutely no hesitation in saying that I intend to destroy House Frey entirely." His words echoed through the entire area thanks to magic.
In the distance, cries of pain and pleas for mercy could be heard as the Frey soldiers were being killed on the other side, along the riverbank, while each Arctican had a kneeling Frey before him.
"Execute them." Jon gave the order.
Every man grabbed a dagger and slit each of their throats.
The Freys roared as they choked, their own groans and cries of pain cutting themselves off. They had already known very well that they would die from the moment they heard Jon speak.
Jon watched Walder Frey through a bird while the man stood there at a window, watching his sons and grandsons being openly executed on his own bridge...
The women cried. Many of them watching brothers and sons being killed while the bridge was stained with their blood.
Jon could not care less about any of it. His eyes turned toward the windows of the tower where they were, where he could even see Maege Mormont and Greatjon Umber watching everything from the window.
What they thought did not matter.
Jon watched the Freys still agonizing on the ground. It was not an easy death. Simply slitting their throats would take some time, but there was nothing left that could save them anymore.
"Let's head back. It's time to finish all of this and return to the sea."
"What do you plan to do, my king?" Lancelot asked.
"We're just going to find out which servants were involved in the plot at the wedding. The rest we can release," Jon said while his men nodded.
He would not allow any servant who had knowledge of it to live.
Let this stand as an example for all of Westeros. If the wedding had actually happened, Jon would not have left anyone alive.
His men soon began searching through the entire castle. The order was to clear the place out, since they would leave immediately and move away before what would happen next. Men and resources were escorted out and seized.
"Hey! What's going on?" Jon looked at the fool Tormund, who was always sleeping until that hour, but also always getting lost somewhere.
The idiot had missed the entire execution, while he was probably still hungover after drinking too much at the banquet the previous night.
"Just deal with him over there," Jon asked one of the Royal Guards.
Even the Royal Guard mocked Tormund with a bit of annoyance, having to do that job. Thinking, 'I'm going to have to take care of this drunk.'
The castle was emptied. All the Northerners and the three lords were also brought out.
"Hey! You plan to kill all the Freys? My wife! Please, my wife is pregnant!" Edmure kept begging when he saw Jon and became deeply frightened by his cruelty and declaration.
"Take him away," Jon merely shrugged as his men pushed him farther away.
He did not plan to massacre the Freys in the other tower.
Jon's first plan was to make the Freys flee.
"I want a thousand soldiers with me to the North," Jon said while his men organized themselves.
He mounted a horse along with other men and they advanced northward, until they could no longer be seen from the tower.
Then Jon found the perfect place for his next step.
With only a single seed placed into the earth and his hand pressing against the ground, roots began to emerge.
They grew at an alarming speed, as large as the small docks he had made at Blacktyde, one of the first islands of the ironborn, where he had needed to enter the island secretly, which was why he had created docks made of roots so the men could disembark from the ships.
A bridge began to be rebuilt with tree roots fastening themselves to the pillars in the water and securing firmly enough for a thousand men to cross with horses.
"Let's go," Jon said as he mounted Panis once more.
The men followed, riding across the bridge and passing over the river before heading south to choose a place to wait and hide.
He merely gave a written order on a piece of paper, and a raven flew toward the still-intact tower, crossing to the other side of the river.
Lancelot, who had stayed behind to lead, took the message and heard the order. "Let's go. Prepare everything," he said while the barrels of wildfire began being loaded onto the trebuchets.
The Freys on the other side, still terrified after witnessing all those family members being killed, noticed the Arcticans moving while the siege weapons began to be prepared.
All the trebuchets passed through the entrance of the destroyed tower and were placed upon the bridge, which was still covered in corpses. Now they began loading the launchers with the barrels.
Then they launched the first attack, the ropes hurling the V2 wildfire barrels toward the eastern tower.
Quickly, the wildfire barrels began crashing against the tower while the blue liquid spread everywhere. The Freys panicked, expecting the same fate as the western tower.
No one had the courage to remain there anymore while the Arcticans threatened to set everything ablaze.
Even Walder Frey suffered an attack and fainted. People grabbed him and carried him outside. The tower gates were quickly opened.
The Freys began running before the tower exploded.
Jon watched everything from near that side of the river. They had not even seen the Arcticans approaching camouflaged within the forest.
There were no more than five hundred Frey men carrying Walder Frey, his daughters, and some sons and grandsons who had managed to escape the first tower alive.
But the problem came immediately afterward. After everyone got out, they only had enough time to hear the warnings before the tower exploded.
Stones flew everywhere, even smashing some Arctican trebuchets on the bridge, while other men hid inside the castle.
As for the Freys... some stones large enough to cover a man, since part of the roof and the walls of the upper floors had simply exploded apart, struck them and crushed several of them in the middle of their escape.
"It seems our time to act has come. Forward, men!" the king gave the order, raising Blackfyre.
Quickly, his men charged out of the forest, appearing by surprise as they rushed toward the crowd still trying to get away from the eastern tower on that side of the river.
The moment the Freys suddenly saw the Arctican charge advancing against them, they panicked. But it was too late. They were easy targets and were massacred quickly.
The horses trampled them one after another while they tried to flee, but it was an easy hunt.
"Keep the women alive! Do not hurt them!" Jon gave the order. "But kill anyone who tries to stop you." He said this while they surrounded most of them, though some fled, only to have the horses already chasing after them.
Even inside the forest, the rangers who were with the cavalry dismounted and quickly advanced with their bows and arrows. They wanted to kill everyone.
Jon was circling the group when he spotted Walder Frey collapsed and unconscious in the center of them.
He wanted to laugh.
"Please! We surrender! Don't kill us!" voices began shouting.
Jon watched them silently for a moment.
"You speak of not killing? Funny hearing that from you, Freys... Men, arrest all of them. They'll have quite a show." Jon warned. "And try waking the decrepit old man," he added.
The group moved the prisoners while the army that had been on the western side of the river also left the tower and began advancing southward.
The Twins were at least eight hundred meters away from them, all the Arcticans gathered in the south while the green flames still burned in the destroyed section of the eastern tower.
Walder Frey opened his eyes as water was thrown onto his face. He jolted upright immediately, remembering everything as he awoke in terror.
What he did not expect was to realize he was now in the Arcticans' hands, being held captive.
Everyone was there. His sons and daughters huddled behind him, with several horses, armed men, and archers surrounding them, waiting for anyone to react so they could strike.
Now they were prisoners.
"Tell me, Walder Frey... how many men did you have before we arrived?" Jon asked in a calm tone, though everyone could hear the mockery in his voice.
"I believe twelve hundred, wasn't it? Filling both towers. Now look at you. Not even forty remain. Most of those left are your daughters." Jon pointed.
Walder Frey trembled while sounds still echoed from the Twins. Jon approached him and grabbed him by the hair from behind, forcing him to raise his head.
Walder, delirious and nearly without strength, could only tremble.
"But that is the least of it. Look. Do you see something heading north, approaching the Twins? I suppose your vision isn't good enough to see..." Jon mocked beside him. "There are around eight boats filled with wildfire about to reach the bridge. Do you know what that means?" he asked.
Indeed, anyone with normal eyesight could see several boats packed with barrels drawing closer and closer to the Twins. The river flowed from south to north, so they could see them approaching from that side toward the Twins.
"That is our entire stock of wildfire." Jon spoke again. "But don't worry. If they fail to destroy the Twins, we'll return to the coast and gather more from our ships. I will make a point of coming back here until this place is completely wiped out. Even so, I have hope that this amount of wildfire will make them disappear."
Jon could feel Walder gasping. The man was having a heart attack. Jon placed his hand over his chest while it began to glow.
Many there were able to witness that, believing the old Frey was about to die from pure despair, but Jon prevented it from happening.
Even so, the trembling lips, ragged breathing, and groans had not stopped. The man was still having a panic attack.
"Look at that... I used my healing magic to stop your heart from failing." He made sure Walder Frey watched as the barrels finally reached the bridge.
At the same time, in the sky above the barrels approaching the tower, Caraxes appeared, carrying a line of flaming torches. He flew over the ships and dropped them before flying away as fast as possible from there.
The torches fell like tiny little sticks from that distance. Caraxes was already hundreds of meters away, flying to avoid being caught by the debris from the explosion that was about to happen.
No one could remain close to what was coming, and the torches struck both the water and some of the boats. It only took one for all the others to explode as well.
It did not take long. A massive burst of green flames erupted from one of the boats before all the others joined in and everything exploded in a blinding flash.
Walder Frey could even see his own reflection in that glow while feeling such agony at seeing his house destroyed in that manner that he endured the pain of continuing to stare at the explosion, even though it was burning his eyes forever.
But it did not matter. He saw the Twins being swallowed by the flames in the next moment, both towers and the bridge alike, while the explosion itself surged toward the riverbanks as well.
Jon merely watched while wearing protective goggles against the intense light, unwilling to miss the spectacle, as he saw the Twins being consumed by the flames and heard screams of despair coming from what remained of the Freys as they watched their home burn.
