Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Breathing School

The Academy of Evershade was not built — it was summoned.

No one could agree on how it came to be. There were no blueprints, no founding date, no records of construction. It simply appeared one day, nestled in a forest that no longer exists, its towers rising like thoughts from a dream someone forgot to finish.

The school was alive. Not metaphorically — literally. The walls pulsed. The floors shifted. The air changed depending on who walked through it. Some students claimed the Academy had a heartbeat. Others said it breathed in its sleep.

But the strangest thing about Evershade wasn't what stood above ground.

It was what lay beneath.

The Founder: Madame Calyx

Long ago — or maybe not so long at all — a woman named Madame Calyx created Evershade. She was a visionary, a dreamer, a rebel. She believed the world was too harsh for sensitive minds, too loud for quiet brilliance. So she built a sanctuary for the misfits, the empaths, the ones who felt too much.

But something changed.

Some say Madame Calyx vanished. Others say she was buried — not in a grave, but in the school itself. Her name was erased from the curriculum. Her teachings were rewritten. Her tower was sealed.

The official story is that there are four towers.

But the ground remembers five.

The Principal: Headmistress Virelle

Headmistress Virelle never speaks of Madame Calyx. Her office is filled with ticking clocks and mirrors that don't reflect your face. She runs the school with precision, like a machine disguised as a dollhouse.

She was once a student here — top of Class Obsidian. Some say she found the fifth tower. Others say she buried it.

She never denies the rumors.

She never smiles, she never gives anybody the chance think too much of what is and what is supposed to be

The Four Towers

Obsidian Tower: Cold, black, and silent. Teaches control and strategy. The walls reflect your thoughts, not your face.

Aureum Spire: Warm and golden. Teaches empathy and persuasion. The ceilings open when students cry.

Noctis Hollow: Misty and dim. Teaches illusion and transformation. Time bends inside.

Solara Keep: Scorched and loud. Teaches rebellion and disruption. The walls vibrate with static.

Each tower is a test. Each lesson is a mirror.

But none of them explain the fifth.

The Grounds That Shift

Echo Fields: A meadow where emotions shape the weather.

Spiral Track: A debate arena where arguments are danced.

Sky Court: A floating stage for aerial expression.

Reflection Pool: A silent lake that shows your fears instead of your face.

Students say that on certain nights, the Reflection Pool shows something else — a door beneath the water, pulsing with light.

The Rooms That Remember

Whisper Theatre: A stage for reenacting dreams. The audience wears masks that change expression on their own.

Ink Lab: A room where lies fade and truth glows.

Cloak Room: A wardrobe of identities. Some students forget who they were before they entered.

Pulse Chamber: A music therapy room that unlocks memories. Some songs don't belong to anyone alive.

The Fifth Tower

There is no official record of a fifth tower.

But students whisper about it — a structure buried beneath the Academy, sealed off after Madame Calyx disappeared. They call it The Root.

Some say it was her original classroom, where she taught students to dream with their eyes open. Others believe it's a prison, holding the parts of the school that couldn't be controlled — wild thoughts, forgotten truths, dangerous memories.

The entrance is said to be hidden. Some claim it's beneath the Reflection Pool. Others say it's behind a mirror in the Obsidian Tower that never shows your reflection,No one has found it.

But sometimes, late at night, students hear footsteps beneath the floor.

And sometimes, when they wake, their shoes are seen wet.
