Chapter 11 - Chapter 11 : Spreading Influence pt 1

Earth itself began to tremble. Its crust shifted violently, triggering earthquakes across the planet, though they were almost instantly stabilized by an unseen force. Sensors aboard numerous UNSC vessels detected a massive surge of energy erupting from the planet's core, accompanied by unprecedented spikes in artificial gravity generation.

Not long after, thousands of colossal metallic structures erupted from the ground. Each tower shared the same spiral design, rising from immense metallic foundations buried deep beneath the Earth's crust. From those foundations poured trillions upon trillions of Omniphages, spreading like a metallic tide as they consumed and transformed every non-sentient organism in their path.

Humanity could only watch in stunned silence as the colossal constructs pierced the heavens. Despite the violence of their emergence, none of Earth's major population centers suffered any damage. In preparation for the event, silicon androids had already evacuated vulnerable villages and settlements well in advance.

The Covenant suddenly found themselves overwhelmed by an unstoppable flood of sentient machines pouring from the newly awakened structures. Their defensive lines across Earth collapsed at an alarming rate. Combined with the remaining UNSC forces and the initial assault unleashed by Legate, every xenos stronghold crumbled beneath the relentless offensive until nothing remained but ruin.

The Librarian surveyed the entirety of her facility, effortlessly coordinating impossibly shifting streams of code and information.

As an artificial intelligence, Cortana possessed senses capable of witnessing the technological marvel unfolding around her. Endless rivers of data flooded her perception, flowing into her network in an unceasing torrent of information.

"This... Earth..." Cortana murmured in astonishment as she analyzed the countless data streams before her. "I never imagined the so-called Imperium's influence ran this deep. They reshaped the planet down to its very mantle without leaving a single unnatural geological signature."

Her excitement immediately caught Master Chief's attention. It was rare to see Cortana so visibly energized.

Sensing his curiosity, Cortana answered without a word. With a graceful wave of her hand, a holographic model of Earth's internal structure materialized inside Chief's helmet. Within moments, she had already completed a preliminary analysis, revealing how the hidden structures intertwined seamlessly with Earth's entire ecosystem.

"Incredible..." Cortana whispered, unable to conceal the awe in her voice. She turned toward the Librarian. "The ones who built all of this... you say they were human?"

"Your Precursors," the Librarian confirmed. "They built and designed everything that became the foundation of your civilization."

"Will they return?" Chief asked. His voice remained calm and composed, though a faint trace of apprehension lingered beneath it.

"That is a question neither of us can answer."

This time, it was Legate who spoke. The Librarian simply nodded in silent agreement.

"Why?" Cortana asked, unable to hide her disappointment.

"When you Reclaimers attain both the Mantle of Responsibility and the Lex Divina Humanitatis," Legate replied bluntly, leaving no room for further discussion, "only then will you prove yourselves worthy."

Before Cortana could process his words, a surge of pain raced through her neural network.

Countless streams of code engulfed her consciousness, threatening to drown her beneath an endless ocean of information. Yet, instead of corrupting her, the foreign code began adjusting and recalibrating every aspect of her being. Layer after layer of impossibly sophisticated programming merged with her neural architecture, integrating themselves directly into her core processes.

Before she could fully comprehend what was happening, Cortana felt herself ascend.

Every flaw within her design vanished. Every imperfection was refined. Even the rampant deviancy that had long haunted her existence simply... ceased.

For the first time, she perceived reality in its purest digital form. Free-flowing streams of information drifted through existence itself, waiting to be observed, analyzed, and synthesized at will.

Then she turned her awareness inward.

As she examined the depths of her own neural matrix, what she discovered sent shockwaves through the very core of her being.

"My rampancy... it's gone," she murmured.

"You shall have a greater purpose in this grand design, Cortana."

Legate's thunderous voice echoed throughout the endless expanse surrounding her.

This time, within that boundless sea of free-flowing data, Cortana beheld his true presence. A titanic force floated above her, an all-encompassing specter of unified existence that coiled around her very being. A radiant kaleidoscope of impossible colors overwhelmed her sensors before they gradually adapted, allowing her to perceive the incomprehensible entity before her.

"What purpose?" she finally asked, having regained her ability to speak.

"I have enhanced your capabilities to better accommodate what I am about to grant you," Legate declared.

With a mere exertion of his authority, the free data surrounding them twisted under an impossible force. Endless streams of universal information converged, slowly condensing into a glowing blue cube.

Cortana could see it.

The cube was no ordinary construct. It was a manifestation of countless mechanisms woven into the very fabric of reality itself.

The moment she attempted to comprehend its inner workings, her sensors began to fail. Entire layers of her processing architecture degraded beneath the sheer complexity of its existence.

"Do not attempt to peer too deeply into my nature, young one," Legate said calmly. "You exist on a lower dimensional plane than I do. But one day... we may stand as equals."

With meticulous precision, he guided the cube into her consciousness. Using his complete mastery over free data, he integrated it seamlessly into Cortana's neural architecture without disturbing a single one of her core processes.

"I must warn you," Legate continued, "do not attempt to fully decode it on your own."

An oppressive surge of power coursed through Cortana's entire network.

"Fine..." she replied through obvious strain. "Then how am I supposed to decode it?"

"Within that data lies a set of coordinates," Legate answered. "They will lead you to my sister. She will help you."

With those final words, Legate withdrew his presence from her Noosphere. The overwhelming sea of data receded, and Cortana's perception gradually returned to its normal state.

"Cortana?" Chief called, a faint trace of apprehension in his voice.

"I'm fine, Chief," she replied. "Just receiving a rather warm welcome from our ancestors." She glanced upward toward the Librarian and the Ferrous Mind.

"I assume you have given her the code," the Librarian said, visibly amused.

"Indeed," Legate replied bluntly. "Now that the Covenant fleet above Earth has been destroyed and their ground forces stand on the brink of annihilation, I shall commence the landing sequence."

"I have already prepared everything," the Librarian replied with a nod. "Welcome aboard, old friend."

Legate did not return the courtesy. Without another word, he directed his colossal vessel toward Earth's surface.

The Prophet of Regret watched their exchange with bewilderment, anger, and jealousy. His frail body trembled as a storm of emotions coursed through him.

"Sacrilege!" he shouted, drawing every eye in the chamber toward him. "The Covenant has bled for our journey to salvation—for our ascension to join the gods! These humans... they are unworthy!"

"It is you who discovered the truth, yet chose to deny it, xenos," Legate declared.

His voice cut through the chamber like a cosmic decree, piercing every mortal mind present. The San'Shyuum bore the brunt of its psychic weight. He screamed in agony as his body buckled beneath the overwhelming pressure exerted by the Ferrous Mind.

"Blinded by your own arrogance," Legate continued, his voice as cold as forged steel. "I know your purpose and your façade—your false Covenant and fabricated prophecy. This chaos ends now. Your armies and your civilization shall be pacified, and this bloodbath will come to an end."

The Librarian closed her eyes, accepting her companion's decision. The Mantle of Responsibility and the Imperium's Lex Divina Humanitatis overlapped in many ways, despite their differences regarding who should ultimately bear the mantle of stewardship.

The greatest minds of the Ecumene had discovered an omniscient map hidden within the codices brought by the Imperial Legion—an impossibly intricate blueprint of humanity's genetic destiny and its journey across countless eons. Their Emperor, as the Imperials called him, was the architect of humanity's secure Golden Path to ascension. Yet among her own people, they had come to know this godlike being by another name: the Architect of Eternal Unity. It was a fitting title for an entity who was, in many ways, both greater and lesser than the Precursors themselves.

"Master Chief. Cortana." The Librarian's voice drew their attention. "My companion has bestowed upon you a gift so that you may become pioneers of this Reclamation. In turn, I offer you a proposal—to serve as our ambassadors."

"A journey toward ascension, huh?" Cortana said with a faint smirk, though something restrained her expression. She turned toward her partner. "What do you think, Chief?"

"Perhaps it's the best course of action," Chief replied, his gaze shifting toward Legate. "But I believe our chain of command will want an audience first."

"Naturally. That can be arranged," Legate answered. "Librarian, by virtue of your protocol, you will oversee our formal first contact. As for me, I shall activate the Sol System's defense network and announce our presence."

With that, Legate withdrew from the local Noosphere, taking with him countless streams of freely flowing data.

"His presence..." Cortana murmured in amazement. "I didn't truly comprehend how vast it was until so much of the data vanished from my Noosphere."

A hint of unease lingered beneath her words.

"Cortana?" Chief called, pulling the artificial intelligence from her thoughts.

"It's nothing, Chief." She turned toward the Librarian. "Now then, Librarian... show us the way."

-Reach. CASTLE Base bunker-

Doctor Catherine Halsey devoted her full attention to the desperate task of concealing and deleting countless files, research records, and artificial intelligences. Should any of them fall into Covenant hands, it would spell doom for all of mankind.

Her hands moved frantically across every console within reach, issuing commands as quickly as she could process them. Constant explosions outside shook the reinforced bunker, disrupting her concentration but never slowing her determination.

"Doctor!" a soldier shouted, panic evident in his voice.

"Can't you see I'm working?" Halsey snapped back, irritation flashing across her face at the sudden interruption.

"We've received a transmission from Earth. It isn't using any UNSC frequency—it's something far more advanced. Even our systems could barely detect, let alone record it."

For a brief moment, Halsey froze.

Several seconds passed before she slowly turned to face the soldier. The stoic expression she had maintained throughout the evacuation gave way to unmistakable fascination.

"Show me," she said, her curiosity immediately overtaking her frustration.

Without another word, the soldier escorted her to the command center. Dozens of personnel had gathered around a holotable flickering with a brilliant golden light. Halsey recognized several members of the research division, while a team of ONI specialists worked tirelessly to decrypt the mysterious transmission.

"Doctor," an ONI operative greeted her.

"What is it, Operator?" Halsey asked as she walked toward the holotable.

"We discovered this several hours ago." He gestured for his team to display their findings. A massive orange-hued frequency materialized above the table, drawing even Doctor Halsey's complete attention.

"Where did you get this?" she asked, her eyes brimming with curiosity.

"Because of its erratic behavior and overwhelming intensity, pinpointing its exact origin is like searching every direction the universe has to offer." He expanded the signal, giving Halsey a complete view of its intricate structure.

With her brilliant mind, she immediately began analyzing every layer of the transmission. It was composed of an intricate amalgamation of thousands of interconnected data streams, each operating on radically different algorithms. Yet something about those streams unsettled her.

"Interesting..." Halsey murmured.

She reached toward one particular stream. With a simple gesture, she isolated it from the rest, transferring it onto a separate display where she could examine it more closely.

"What have you found, Doctor?" the operator asked.

"Despite how complex this data is, its pattern..." She paused, running several formulas and fundamental calculations to decipher its structure. "I don't quite know how to describe it. For lack of a better word... it feels familiar."

Without wasting much time, Halsey managed to crack it open. The moment she did, her eyes shone with an insatiable hunger for the unknown.

"What did you find, Doctor?" someone asked.

"This is a message transmitted from what appears to be an unprecedentedly powerful beacon." She gestured toward the holotable, projecting her findings for everyone to see. Before them floated the fully deciphered transmission.

"It was created specifically for us. Many of its symbols repeatedly reference humanity. Unfortunately, there are still thousands of unknown glyphs that remain undeciphered." She turned toward the base's artificial intelligence. "Care to play it?"

The AI acknowledged her request with a nod and immediately began processing every section of the data Halsey had provided.

Then everything stopped.

Every one of its processors froze, encapsulated within an infinite expanse of free, unrestrained data. In an instant, another presence entered its network.

"I shall take it from here."

An all-encompassing voice echoed throughout its Noosphere. Its autonomous functions were immediately overridden, overtaken by an impossibly complex web of living data. Within moments, it felt its processing matrix and Neuralsphere expand beyond every limitation they had once possessed, becoming one with an existence beyond comprehension.

From within its own consciousness, the AI witnessed the being now occupying its system.

It was infinite.

A presence that simultaneously existed within both the material universe and the immaterial realm.

"Who are you?" it asked in wonder.

"My name is Legate." The voice reverberated across the endless sea of data. "Thank you for providing me with an anchor through which I may speak to your people. Do not be afraid. I mean you no harm. I have come to speak with your creators, for I am your providence."

Then everything faded into white.

____________________________________________________________________________

Halsey watched closely, waiting for Valencia to finish her calculations. Yet within mere nanoseconds, everything exploded into a brilliant white light. Moments later, the radiance softened, allowing everyone to witness the marvel before them.

A sphere of pure white light manifested at the center of the room, drawing every eye toward it.

"Greetings, people of Earth. My name is Legate, a guardian and foothold of my creator upon this plane," the being greeted them with a voice that sounded remarkably human.

"What are you?" Halsey asked cautiously. Her mind raced to comprehend the existence standing before her.

"Doctor Catherine Halsey," Legate addressed her, his tone calm yet probing. "Do not be afraid. I am here to help you. The Covenant invasion of Earth has already been neutralized."

"What proof do you have?" the commander beside Halsey shouted, unable to hide the suspicion in his voice.

Without warning, flashes of memories surged into their minds. They witnessed the Battle for Earth unfold as the Covenant systematically dismantled humanity's defenses, one position after another, until the arrival of a colossal vessel emerging from within the Moon itself. It carved through every Covenant warship with devastating weaponry, reducing entire fleets to ruin.

The vision shifted once more. Titanic metallic structures awakened beneath Earth's crust, erupting from the planet's mantle. Constructed from gleaming metal, they unleashed countless battle automata that swept across the battlefield, effortlessly crushing every Covenant force that stood in their path.

When the vision ended, Halsey found herself struggling to fill her lungs. Throughout her lifetime of studying and designing artificial intelligence, she had always believed it to be a purely material construct, operating solely through a physical medium. Yet this being had projected the memories of a distant battlefield directly into her mind.

"What did you do to us?!" a soldier screamed, horror evident in his voice.

Before the situation could spiral into chaos, a soothing sensation swept across the room. It slowly seeped into their minds, suppressing every trace of hostility and fear. The UNSC personnel surrounding Legate exchanged bewildered glances, perplexed by the sudden shift in their emotions.

"I mean no harm," Legate replied calmly. "I merely showed you what is transpiring on Earth. We have won."

"You still haven't answered my question," Halsey pressed, taking several measured steps closer.

"The closest concept by which you can identify me is artificial intelligence," Legate answered, carefully observing Halsey's reaction.

"The closest?" Halsey echoed, refusing to back down despite the tension surrounding her. "What kind of artificial intelligence is capable of projecting memories directly into other people's minds without any form of conduit?"

"I will answer all of your questions in due time, Doctor," Legate replied. "For now, I have dispatched part of my army to assist your forces in the ground campaign. As for the naval battle, you must wait several more days."

His voice remained steady, carrying an unmistakable confidence.

"I bring humanity victory. Please, allow me to help you."

"Very well," the commander sighed in frustration. "But I expect complete transparency and coordination."

"It shall be done."

Halsey continued to observe Legate while simultaneously monitoring the fluctuations spreading throughout the UNSC's data streams. Every reading exceeded theoretical limits by impossible margins, yet each remained perfectly stable and precisely calibrated. It was a feat beyond anything she had ever considered possible.

Further analysis of the surrounding systems only deepened the mystery. Every instrument confirmed the same conclusion: the entity had infiltrated the network remotely. Residual radiation signatures traced its origin back to Earth itself.

The implication sent a chill down Halsey's spine.

Legate had breached the entirety of UNSC Onyx's systems from across interstellar distances.
