Lucian left shortly after discussing the next stages of Operation Constantine with Adam.
Meanwhile, Adam stayed behind in Constantine. He planned to rest here for a couple of days before resuming his journey.
The raven-haired youth made his way past the layers of security around the ash tree and finally reached the base.
He moved unseen, so no one sensed his presence.
Adam pressed his palm against the bark and gazed at the canopy with a light smile on his face.
"You've grown so big," he murmured.
He inhaled deeply and closed his eyes.
Then he recited a short prayer:
"Great Mother Yggdrassil,
"Root of the world and shelter of all living things.
"Spread your branches over this land,
"Let your roots hold the earth firm beneath our feet.
"Guard the fields, the forests, and the city that rests in your shade.
"Protect the innocent. Shield the children from fear.
"Turn aside the hands that would bring ruin.
"If a storm must come, let it fall on me first.
