It was daytime, yet there wasn't much sunlight to speak of.
There never was.
The sky always remained gloomy. The rays of the sun never managed to filter through the packed clouds above.
"Everyone get in formation! Now!" Adam barked out orders.
"Several bogeys incoming!" Kara shouted.
The rest of the party immediately tore their attention away from the gates and toward the landscape ahead.
Dense forests lined both sides of the dirt road, their tangled branches obscuring everything beyond. Even the road itself curved ahead before disappearing into the trees.
For several long moments, nothing emerged.
Only the distant cawing of ravens and the occasional flutter of wings disturbed the oppressive silence.
And then…
Howl!
A wolf's howl tore through the air, eerie and deadly. The haunting call of the beast made every member of the party stiffen.
For they knew…
A wolf was rarely alone.
