"Selina?"
Clark specifically moved his eyes away from the camera to use his super vision to take a look, discovering that it really was Selina.
Clark's super vision allows him to see through surfaces right to the essence, making Superman the least likely to confuse different alternate universe counterparts, even if their appearances are identical, their body structures are not. Clark could immediately tell that this was the alternate universe visitor Selina he'd met at the hotel before.
Then he incredulously looked at Bruce Wayne, confirming it was indeed their universe's Spider-Man, and not the alternate universe visitor Bruce Wayne. How could these two be together?
To say Selina could mistake this Spider-Man for her boyfriend, Clark didn't believe it. Not to mention the alternate universe Bruce, his temperament differed greatly from Spider-Man's, and they were quite a few years apart, anyone with sight wouldn't mix them up.
Clark raised his camera again to observe, noticing that this Selina was wearing a strange outfit, a black tight-fitting suit with a pair of pointed cat ears, mimicking something odd. Bruce seemed to be dragging her, seemingly wanting to take her somewhere.
Clark didn't want to invade others' privacy, but the situation was too strange, prompting him to use his super hearing to find out what they were saying.
"...If you're not planning to steal something, why wear this outfit? I'm warning you, even if you're this universe's Catwoman, you can't act recklessly. This wedding is very important, and the bride's veil and dress are crucial. You cannot..."
"Let go of me, you lunatic! Where I'm going is none of your business! We don't seem to know each other, right?!"
"Anyway, stealing is not allowed! If I let you go, wouldn't you still go back to steal the veil tonight? Be careful, I'll report you to the police!"
"You don't have any evidence; even if you send me to the police, they can't arrest me, you fool!"
The conversation confused Clark; the dialogue seemed to suggest Catwoman intended to steal something, possibly related to the wedding, but got caught by Spider-Man, who was dragging her along to prevent the theft.
However, considering the identities of the two, the situation became peculiar. First, why would an alternate universe visitor want to steal a wedding dress? The bride and groom had no conflicts with them, and the dress was custom-made; stealing it would be unusable. Plus, those alternate universe visitors didn't seem to lack money, so there was no point in doing this.
Moreover, being caught by Spider-Man seemed even less likely. Even from an age perspective, other universe's Catwoman's experience would be many times that of Spider-Man; if she truly wanted to steal, Spider-Man couldn't catch her. Even if possible, she wouldn't be brought here; she would have escaped midway.
Clark pondered seriously, thinking there was only one possibility: that this alternate universe Selina was, for some reason, pretending to be this universe's Catwoman.
Catwoman should be younger than Batman; if Batman, or rather their universe's Spider-Man, just started college, Catwoman should still be a little girl, possibly not debuting. Even if already stealing, she wouldn't be a famous thief, maybe only stealing regionally, her skills less developed, hard to encounter Spider-Man.
Yet this alternate universe Selina, though young, was clearly a mature woman with strong skills, or she wouldn't dare steal a wedding dress.
Given that now everything related to the wedding had triple-layered security, the Rebirth Alliance implemented a flood control security style, villains weak at the knees would faint just seeing it.
From Spider-Man's words, it seemed Catwoman had snuck in already, possibly already targeting the veil, just a step away from action; this absolutely wasn't something a novice thief could manage.
Yet, their universe's Batman wasn't very perceptive, believing whatever others said, with Selina posing as this universe's Catwoman, he hadn't noticed, still arguing about stealing.
Clark sighed deeply; although unsure of the alternate universe visitor's intentions, whatever she planned, Spider-Man was powerless, entirely outmatched.
Suddenly, Bruce in the camera stood still, seeming to sense something, dragging Catwoman into Wayne building. Shortly after, the paparazzi's cars arrived, aiming their long and short lenses at every entrance to Wayne building, clearly their purpose was the same as Clark's, all seeking big news.
Indeed, Spider-sense was a lifesaving divine artifact; if they were a few seconds later, tomorrow's newspaper headline would be "Master Wayne's peculiar interests, night meeting tight-suit beauty."
Pulled into Wayne building, Selina turned her eyes, forcefully shaking off Spider Man's hand, saying: "You aren't planning to kidnap me, are you? You're so law-abiding, don't you know restricting another's freedom is illegal?!"
Spider Man seemed to lose patience, yelling at Selina: "You better stay in my sight, or I'll web you to the wall!!!"
"You're truly a madman." Selina said, hugging her arms, but smiled as Spider Man turned away. She paused a moment, creating distance from Spider Man, pressing an earpiece then saying, "It's done. For the next few days I'll be watching him, nothing will go wrong."
"You need to be careful yourself." Peter sat in his office, speaking into the intercom, "Though it's not necessarily going to be that unlucky, we must prepare for the worst..."
"Don't worry." Selina's lips curled up, showing rare coldness, "I'm not Gwen Stacy—there's no cat that dies from falling in this world."
After hanging up the communication, Peter sat in front of his desk, somewhat dazed, and recalled the situation from yesterday, the feeling of powerlessness still surged like a tide.
"My uncle died." Peter and Spider Man sat side by side on the rooftop of the Wayne building, gazing out over the entire Forward York City, "Gwen died too. Later, my aunt died, Mary Jane died, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, they all died..."
"Before Uncle Ben died, he taught me how to be a hero, but as they each left me one by one, I realized that a hero's fate is to lose, to lose family, lose partners, lose friends..."
Spider Man looked at him, seeing Peter's hair blown by the strong wind before a storm, gazing into the distance with an expression that seemed like an old skin wrapped around that spirited young hero. Yet today, he seemed like a dried-up monster hanging on the tree branch, precariously stretching only half its wing.
"I gave you the Spider Power, thinking I could escape fate." Peter's lips curled into an ugly smile, "But this isn't the fate of Peter Parker, it's the fate of Spider Man."
Under Spider Man's gaze, Peter stood up; he turned his head and then looked down at Spider Man and said, "This is my mistake, and I feel very sorry. I assure you, I will resolve all of this."
Though he didn't say what the mistake was or how he planned to resolve it, Spider Man still felt something floating within his heart settle, like an anchor thrown into the sea finally touching the bottom, that heavy dull sound as melodious as the sound of heaven.
Suddenly, Spider Man felt a slight tremor in a corner of his heart, like a strand on a spider web being lightly touched, the tremor was subtle, but it reverberated in the heart chambers continuously until it became like an earthquake.
What exactly should Spider Man be like?
Bruce Wayne asked himself this question many times in his heart. A sunny and cheerful good neighbor? A great hero who saves people from fire and water?
But he wasn't, he didn't have that cheerful personality, he didn't always have the ability to save people from danger, nor did he feel deserving of the title of hero, so he was just a strange person with superpower.
But at this moment, Bruce suddenly had some enlightenment: Spider Man is, when you come out of a crowded subway station on a normal morning, traveling through streets and alleys with the same hurried ordinary people, and then you look up and see that figure, at this moment, you know you are safe.
Terrorist attacks, bank robberies, building collapses...these things that can easily ruin an ordinary person's life, repeat on this land. Every rushed morning, every busy night, every minute and every second, every moment, it's not that you don't step onto a cliff and won't fall into the abyss, but the crack of hell may appear under everyone's feet at any time.
When fiery rain falls from the sky, when the earth cracks open, when hell descends into the world, all ordinary people can do is pray, and at this time, Spider Man will respond to you faster than God, because no one understands the pain of falling more than he does.
What should Spider Man be like? Just as Bruce feels at this moment, as long as he says he'll protect you, you can be at ease, throwing away worries about disaster and believe tomorrow will still be an ordinary day.
Ordinariness is always precious. Using the ordinary to reflect ordinary people's ordinariness, using the extraordinary to protect ordinary people's ordinariness, this is the Amazing Spiderman.
Standing atop the Building, overlooking the entire city, Bruce is clearly aware that although he has Spider Man's superpower, although he wears Spider Man's outfit, the Amazing Spiderman is still Peter Parker, and he himself remains one of the mortals he protects.
"...So, do you think Bruce Wayne will go through everything you did?" Selina crossed her arms, frowned slightly, and looked at Peter, "That's too strange. You're two completely different people, whether it's personality, background, or ability, it's really too far apart, how could you necessarily encounter the same things?"
"You're cheerful, he's more introverted. You're from an ordinary background, he's a billionaire. You're skilled in scientific research, while he has no talent in this area. No matter how you look at it, you're completely two kinds of people, the trajectory of fate can't be the same." Selina shook her head.
"But what if I say it has already happened?" Peter had already removed his glasses, looking a bit pale, with dried blood crumbles on his lips, clearly not rested well.
Selina asked skeptically: "It has already happened?"
"I almost got shot." Peter said, "I took the students for a field study in the Old Town, just happened to meet Spider Man, then a robber rushed out, fired three shots at me..."
"This..." Selina seemed a bit embarrassed, "The security in Gotham's Old Town is indeed somewhat..."
"My uncle died in such a shooting back then." Peter's tone lowered, "The robber fired three consecutive shots, two of which hit critical areas, Ben Parker died on the spot. If I hadn't known magic, that day I would have died in the same way."
