Chapter 9 - Emblems and Questions

Judging from my summoner's panicked reaction, these clothes hold a special significance.

I heard the voices of my summoner and Mr. Blonde arguing, with the former's voice being shut down by the few spoken words of the latter.

I highly doubt the man would just give a random person he just met some clothes.

Though I had only known the man for a few hours, I got the impression he was a calculating and pragmatic person. From how he behaved in the office, he held some level of authority in this building.

But what is this building?

The only things I had seen before being forced into that cage of golden light were the pair of quarter buildings and that circular building in the opposite direction. After that was Mr. Blonde's office and the hallway stretching a long distance with one side having windows showing a view of a forest, river, and mountain.

The location of this building was also a fair distance away from the city I saw from the cliff.

Dorms, an office, and a circular building.

Hmm… even if I knew what that circular building looked like on the inside, I couldn't properly deduce what this place could be. If it were an arena, perhaps a military academy or research center?

What about that golden dragon? What's its role in all of this?

My mind was left guessing from what little I knew about this world.

I heard Mr. Blonde speak more syllables before walking down the hallway. My summoner followed, and then I followed after him, not wanting to be lost in a building I effectively walked blindfolded into.

I placed the box on the floor, and neatly folded the sweater, before closing the box and carrying it with me.

The hallway of the office I had just left had scones lining the walls. In them were these translucent rocks I imagined emitted light when it was dark. Red carpet lined the floor, flushed with the wall's white trim. The wall itself was painted with a bluish-grey color.

We made a turn and that mansion-like aesthetic was cut off with a hallway dimly lit with candles in sconces that looked like a secret underground passageway in a centuries-old church.

I looked back and forth between the 2 hallways before pinching myself in the wrist to check if I was dreaming.

Ow.

Despite my surprise, the 2 continued without stopping.

The scene changed again to a cafeteria, with benches lining the tables. I tried to recall the other name for this place, but to no avail, as I tried keeping up with them.

We made a few more turns until we stopped in a room that was interconnected with other hallways. A hub of sorts.

Mr. Blonde walked over to a banner on one of the walls. It featured a scaled-up version of the emblem I saw on the shirt.

It was a shield-shaped emblem split into 4 quadrants. Two rings circled the shield, positioned in a way that allowed for the full display of different depictions in each quadrant. From top left to bottom right, there was a sword, 5 differently colored square gems over a bag, a crystal, and a book.

It'd be convenient to have such a banner in your office for an explanation. Then again, he'd probably expect to explain this to a fluent and literate person.

If I had to guess, the images in the quadrants represented everything taught at this place. From everything I've seen, it felt more likely that I was at a school.

The sword and book likely represent fighting and academics. I'm not sure what the 5 gems and the crystal represent. Probably something magic-related?

The crystal in the bottom left quadrant looked more detailed than the 5 differently colored gems. Compared to the crystal, the 5 gems look like they were placed there with a single tap of a big paintbrush before being smoothed and shaped by more strokes of a smaller one.

Mr. Blonde started speaking, more syllables flowed out of his mouth than the previous times I'd heard him speak.

Ok, this is important. I just wish I knew what he was saying.

My summoner silently listened to whatever Mr. Blonde was saying. Judging by his expression, he either agreed with Mr. Blonde's words or didn't care all that much. Perhaps it was a mixture of both.

Mr. Blonde then said something sharply that made my summoner jump.

He's reacting like a parent caught him just as he was about to sneak out.

The man then spoke a few more syllables, which caused my summoner's expression to shift.

Mr. Blonde walked off to a different hallway.

My summoner grabbed my wrist and walked in the opposite direction.

We passed by some doors, some identically paired like classrooms back in my world.

Then we encountered an array of head statues, displaying the profiles of people from the collarbone up with their arms sliced cleanly off. There were 10 displayed on stair-like shelves in an order of 3, 4, then 3.

Nameplates were attached to the head statues written in characters I can't read. I had little time to check out the statues as we went through a door leading us outside.

Across from us was the quarter building my summoner ran in a mad dash too. The sense of urgency from before was replaced with plain curiosity wondering what the inside of that building looked like. It took a few minutes for us to finally reach the building's entrance.

He's still holding onto my wrist and hasn't looked back since that interaction with Mr. Blonde. What did he hear to end up like this?

I tried wrestling my wrist from his grip, but that only made it tighter. It reminded me of those toy traps that hurt the victim the more they struggled.

"Hey, let go!" I shouted before smacking his wrist with my free hand.

He seemingly understood and let go of my hand, gently rubbing the part of his arm I smacked him on. He sounded apologetic, speaking unknown words before beckoning me to follow.

"Sorry, your grip hurt," I explained, despite knowing he likely didn't understand. I followed his unspoken request, sticking behind him as we navigated the second building I'd be inside of today.

The interior of the quarter building lacked the impressiveness of the school building I was inside of as if designed to function without the need to impress.

The hallways reminded me of the various hotels I stayed at in my past life, with doors placed every few feet. The distance between them gave me a sense of the size of the rooms hidden behind them. Fortunately, each of the doors had numbers, something I recognized in my past life. The further down the hall we walked, the higher the number I saw.

We walked up some stairs before continuing down the hall and stopping at door 61. My summoner took a key from his pocket and inserted it into the knob's keyhole, turning it with a click. He opened the door and quickly walked before turning and shutting it faster than he opened it, making an audible slam.

I wasn't gonna enter unless you gave permission, but damn.

With nothing better to do, I waited outside. To pass the time, I used my new power to create whatever came to mind.

Dodecohedron.

No.2 Wooden Pencil.

A six-sided dice.

I imagined them levitating in the air, flying in trajectories I visualized.

A minute later, the door opened with my summoner dressed in the same clothes given to me in the box I was still holding. He spoke some syllables before grabbing the box I held and placing it somewhere in his room where I couldn't see before closing and locking the door. He pointed to the floating objects, to which I demanifested on command.

My summoner merely blinked.
