A gentle distortion of space occurred in the forest at the back of the mountain as Naruto and Gaara emerged from the fold of the Flying Thunder God Technique.
The forest behind the mountain stood deathly still under the cloak of midnight. The silver moonlight spilled through the lattice of tree branches above them, painting the damp earth in fragments of pale light and ink-black shadow.
Everything felt unnatural still.
Naruto exhaled through his nose. His breath came out in a warm puff of steam that drifted skyward and vanished into the cold night.
"Well…" He stretched his arms overhead with a long sigh, muscles popping. "One problem solved."
He turned his head to the side, eyes glancing toward Gaara, who stood a few paces away. He seemed quiet, motionless, staring up at the moon.
"Don't forget what I said," Naruto continued, tone low. "You should rest now and sleep properly... And try not to get too emotional… it might cause some… problems."
Gaara said nothing at first. His gourd shifted lightly against his back as a faint breeze whispered past. His shadow stretched across the moss-covered stones like the ghost of his former self.
"…It's quiet," He finally murmured. "Inside."
Naruto raised an eyebrow. "Yeah?"
Gaara lowered his gaze. The sharpness in his pale jade eyes was still there, but something soft had crept in now. He looked at Naruto for a moment before he opened his mouth.
"I didn't realize how loud it used to be."
"You'll get used to it," Naruto smiled and replied, patting Gaara lightly on the shoulder. "It's called peace. It will be weird at first… but kind of addictive once you start having it."
Gaara gave the faintest nod.
"…And thank you."
Naruto blinked. "Huh?"
Gaara looked at him, his eyes narrowing a little. The air between them felt heavier for a moment, as if something long-buried had finally been unearthed.
"For helping me," Gaara continued. "For giving me a chance to… see my mother."
His voice didn't shake.
The sincerity in it was sharp enough to cut through stone.
Naruto scratched the back of his head. "Yeah, well… I figured you deserved it."
The two stood in silence for a beat longer.
Naruto yawned. "Alright, I'm heading back. Got a whole month before the next phase. Might as well sleep while I still can."
He raised his fingers in a familiar hand sign.
In a blink, he was gone.
Just like that, the forest was silent again except for the light crunch of gravel under Gaara's sandals as he turned and walked back toward the village.
------
The compound where the Suna genin had been assigned was a quiet, shadowed inn near the base of the mountain. A perimeter of stone lanterns glowed faintly under the dark sky.
Two shinobi patrolled the outer walls, but paused when they spotted the familiar silhouette stepping through the mist.
"It's him…"
One of them whispered and took an unconscious step back.
Gaara ignored the look as he was used to it. He stepped onto the wooden walkway and pushed open the sliding door.
Inside, Baki stood near a table with several opened scrolls, his arms crossed. His sharp eyes immediately snapped toward the door.
"Gaara."
The name dropped like a stone into the room.
Seated on opposite futons were Temari and Kankuro. Both stood the moment he entered, neither saying a word as they just stared at him.
The air inside the room shifted, charged with tension.
Baki's jaw tightened.
"Where have you been?" He asked, voice clipped, controlled, but unmistakably lined with concern. "You've been gone for some time. You left without a word."
Temari's arms were folded tight across her chest, knuckles white against the fabric of her sleeve. Her eyes flicked from Gaara to Baki, and back again.
Kankuro stood beside her stiffly. His painted face couldn't hide the worry buried in his posture.
Gaara looked at them all in turn.
"I was out for a walk," He said simply.
Temari's brow twitched.
"Walking?" She echoed, voice a little too loud. "Are you kidding me?! You disappear for hours, it's the middle of the night, and all we get is 'walking'?!"
Kankuro stepped forward, voice rising. "We thought something happened to you! You didn't leave a note, even Baki-sensei was thinking of contacting the Hokage!"
But Gaara didn't raise his voice. He just stood there, expression calm, unmoved by the storm of emotions radiating around him.
"…I apologize," He said.
Temari blinked. "You… what?"
"I said," Gaara repeated, "I apologize. I didn't mean to cause concern."
For several long seconds, no one spoke.
Then Kankuro straightened, and he looked like he'd been slapped across the face.
"You… apologize?" He said slowly, as though repeating it would help make sense of it.
Gaara nodded once and said. "I just needed air... I wasn't trying to avoid you."
Another moment of silence passed, thick with incomprehension.
Temari stared at him.
This wasn't right. This wasn't normal.
The Gaara they knew didn't apologize.
He would never offer explanations. He wouldn't return from two hours of silence with nothing but a gentle voice and a calm expression.
Something had changed.
She tried to speak, but her words got caught in her throat.
Kankuro rubbed his arm slowly, casting a sideways glance toward Baki. "Did… something happen out there?"
Baki said nothing, but his gaze didn't leave Gaara as he was trying to understand what could have happened to him.
Temari finally took a step forward. "Gaara, are you… feeling alright?"
"I am," He said. "Better than I've felt in a long time."
They didn't know what to say to that.
Kankuro looked down at his hands. He wasn't sure whether to feel relieved or unnerved.
Temari faltered, and Kankuro shook his head, muttering under his breath, "I'm not dreaming, right?"
"No," Baki answered him, without taking his eyes off Gaara. "You're not."
The silence that followed was long, stretching with tension.
"I'll be resting now." Gaara dipped his head lightly to them. He walked across the room.
Temari instinctively stepped aside as he passed her.
Kankuro stood completely still, eyes tracking him like one might watch a wild animal that suddenly stopped baring its fangs.
Gaara slid open the door to his quarters.
Before stepping in, he turned halfway, just enough to look over his shoulder.
"…Good night," He said, and then he closed the door behind him.
The room stayed quiet for several seconds.
Kankuro was the first to exhale, long and slow.
"…What the hell just happened?"
Temari shook her head faintly, still trying to process it.
"That wasn't him," She whispered. "That wasn't the Gaara we've known all our lives."
"He wasn't angry," Kankuro added. "He wasn't even cold. He just… wasn't anything like before."
Baki didn't move. His jaw was set, hands behind his back, shoulders straight.
"…It was him," He said at last. "But something has changed."
He turned and walked slowly toward the edge of the room, stopping beside the window where moonlight pooled across the floor.
Temari folded her arms tightly, almost hugging herself. She asked softly. "What do you think happened to him?"
But no one answered her question.
Even Kankuro had nothing sarcastic to say this time.
