The chamber slowly fell silent.
The brilliant blue light faded until only the soft glow of ancient runes remained. The great machinery hidden within the ruin gradually came to rest, their echoes disappearing into the depths below.
Vile stood quietly, the Hammer of Technology resting comfortably in his hands.
He looked down at it.
It no longer felt heavy.
It felt... familiar.
Alex walked over and gave him a small smile.
"Looks like you've got yourself a new companion."
Vile let out a quiet laugh.
"I never imagined..."
His words faded as he tightened his grip on the Hammer.
"I don't think it chose me because I'm the smartest."
Kaelor leaned on his staff.
"No."
"It chose you because you refused to give up."
Vile blinked.
"...Thanks."
"Don't get used to compliments," Kaelor replied with a grin.
"They're expensive."
Ethan laughed.
"I thought gold was expensive."
"It is."
"Then stop giving away free wisdom."
Even Kira allowed the corner of her mouth to lift.
"For once... that wasn't terrible."
"I'll take that as praise."
Rose quietly watched the exchange.
For the first time since joining them, everyone seemed... lighter.
Liam finally broke the silence.
"So..."
"We actually won?"
"We survived," Alex answered.
"That's close enough."
Lyra smiled warmly.
"I think we've earned a little optimism."
Mya crossed her arms.
"Don't get too comfortable."
She looked toward the tunnel leading back to the surface.
"Something tells me this was the easy part."
Nobody argued.
The group began making their way out of the ancient ruin.
Morning sunlight greeted them as they emerged from the crumbling entrance.
Fresh air replaced the stale scent of stone and machinery.
For a few moments...
Everything was peaceful.
Birds sang overhead.
Leaves rustled in the wind.
Then
Ethan stopped walking.
His smile disappeared.
"..."
Alex noticed immediately.
"Ethan?"
He didn't answer.
He simply stared toward the distant mountains.
A strange feeling settled deep within him.
Not fear.
Not excitement.
A pull.
Like something impossibly far away had noticed him.
He frowned.
"...We should keep moving."
Alex studied him for a moment before nodding.
"Let's go."
The group continued down the mountain path.
Behind them, the ancient ruin stood silent once more.
Ahead...
Somewhere beyond forests, forgotten battlefields, and lands untouched for centuries...
Something else had begun to awaken.
It waited patiently.
Not calling to everyone.
Only to one.
And though Ethan couldn't explain why...
He couldn't shake the feeling that someone...
or something
was waiting for him.
