Chapter 2 - Episode 2: Jenn's Test, Part 1

Previously, on Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist Showdown, the tension in the air was palpable as Clyde and Joseph squared off, declaring in unison, "Let's duel." This familiar phrase, beloved by duelists everywhere, signified not only the beginning of their match but also the spirit of competition and camaraderie that defined their rivalry. Both duelists shuffled their decks meticulously, ensuring fairness and randomness before placing them down with practiced precision on the dueling field. Each competitor began with 2000 Life Points, a modest but critical resource that would dwindle with every calculated move and devastating attack.

Clyde carefully placed one card face down. Without hesitation, Clyde summoned Elemental Hero Avian (1000/1000) in Attack Mode. Joseph drew his card and, after a moment of consideration, played Maverick. With a swift command, Joseph instructed Maverick to attack, the digital simulation roaring to life as Maverick charged at Elemental Hero Avian.

Clyde, undeterred by Joseph's earlier critique, drew upon his resolve. He studied his hand and drew forth Elemental Hero Bladedge (2600/1800), and summoned him to the field to defeat Maverick and turn the tide of the duel. But brute strength alone would not win the duel. Joseph, ever the tactician, activated Waterfall Drop, a powerful magic card. With a dramatic flair, he explained its effect: Waterfall Drop destroys every monster on the field, unleashing a torrent of cascading water that swept away Bladedge. Yet the card did more—its secondary effect inflicted battle damage directly to each duelist equal to the attack points of their own destroyed monsters. Joseph destroyed Elemental Hero Bladedge, dealing a devastating blow that cost Clyde 2600 Life Points—more than he could afford to lose. The duel ended abruptly, with Clyde conceding to Joseph's victory.

Despite the loss, Clyde exhibited true sportsmanship, acknowledging Joseph's skill and promising a rematch. The respect between rivals was evident, and Joseph, gracious in victory, accepted the challenge. He left the dueling field energized, knowing that the upcoming tournament would demand even greater prowess and preparation.

Upon returning home, Joseph found his excitement undiminished. Awaiting him was a mysterious package. Inside, he discovered a state-of-the-art duel disk, a sleek piece of technology designed for the most intense dueling scenarios; duel armor, an advanced suit offering unique abilities; and two coins—one bearing the image of a werewolf, the other a vampire. Each coin felt heavy in his hand, signifying more than just a simple collectible; they were tokens of opportunity, keys to the tournament's structure and stakes.

Joseph inserted the included VHS tape into his player, its whirring reminiscent of the old days, and watched as Jenn Richards, the enigmatic tournament organizer, appeared on screen. Jenn congratulated him on his victory over Clyde Tinker, her voice calm and confident, before proceeding to explain the prizes he had received. The duel disk and duel armor were more than equipment—they were tools that would set him apart from the other competitors. Of particular note were the werewolf and vampire coins. Jenn described the tournament's mechanics: twenty-four such coins were required to reach the finals, and coins could be gained or lost by wagering them during duels. This system would test not only the duelist's skill but also their strategic risk-taking and confidence.

Ralph adjusted his duel armor, eyes narrowing. Ralph drew his opening hand: Gazelle, the King of Mythical Beasts, Swords of Revealing Light, Polymerization, Dark Magician, and Kuriboh. Joseph, for his part, began with Waterfall Drop, Treetop Snake Pack, The Masked Avenger, Mountain Lion Attack Pack, and Net Rope Snare. Ralph drew Berfomet from his deck. "I'll start by summoning Gazelle, the King of Mythical Beasts, in Defense Mode," Ralph declared, placing his card with precision. Ralph showed Joseph Berfomet and Polymerization and added, "Now I'll fuse it with Berfomet using Polymerization to create Chimera the Flying Mystical Beasts (2100/1800) in Attack Mode."

Joseph smirked, feeling the energy of the duel. Joseph then drew Log Bridge from his deck. "I now play Waterfall Drop. This card destroys all monsters on the field and subtracts their total from the owner's Life Points." Chimera then got destroyed, and Ralph lost 2100 Life Points, bringing him down to 5900. Ralph mentioned, "When Chimera goes to the graveyard, I can bring back a monster I used to summon it from the graveyard, and I choose Gazelle, the King of Mystical Beasts (1500/1200) in defense mode."

Joseph said, "I'll now summon Mountain Lion Attack Pack (1600/1200) in Attack Mode! Get ready, Ralph—my lions are charging in." He tapped his duel disk, watching as the virtual beasts leaped onto the field. "Mountain Lion Attack Pack, attack Gazelle! Their ability lets me inflict direct damage even when you're defending."

Ralph winced as his Life Points dropped. "You caught me off guard, Joseph. My Life Points are now 5500. Well played." Joseph mentioned, "Your monster prevented me from attacking you directly; that deck is living up to the hype."

Jenn's voice echoed from the video screens: "Excellent maneuver, Joseph. You're off to a strong start."

Ralph recovered quickly, drawing his next card, Graceful Charity. "I activate Swords of Revealing Light!" He pressed the card into his duel disk. "Now, you can't attack for three turns. My magic seals the field. Your offensive will have to wait."

Joseph complained, "3 turns. Oh, man." Ralph continued, "I now play Graceful Charity. This card lets me draw three cards and discard two." Ralph drew Watapon, Dark Renewal, and Electromagnetic Turtle. After drawing his three cards, Ralph selected both The Dark Magician and the Electromagnetic Turtle to send to the graveyard. He then took the cards out of his hand and put them in his graveyard. Ralph continued, "Now I play Watapon (200/300) in defense mode. You see, whenever Watapon is sent to my hand by magic, trap, or monster effects, I get to summon it to the field automatically. I'll now finish with one card face down." Ralph slipped one card into a slot on his duel disk, and the card appeared on the field.

Joseph nodded, digging into his deck and drawing Monster Reborn. "Since I can't attack, I'll set a card in Defense Mode. I'm biding my time, waiting for your barrier to fade." Ralph added, "And I'm activating a trap, Dark Renewal." A coffin then appeared on the field and shot a beam at Watapon and Joseph's defense card, pulling them inside. Ralph said, "This trap activates when you make a summoning. It takes a monster from both sides of the field and sends them to the graveyard, allowing me to summon a spellcaster back to the field."

Joseph pointed out, "It's too bad you don't have any. By my calculations, the only monsters in your graveyard are Chimera and Gazelle."

Ralph asked, "Then you might want to double-check your work. Remember last turn when I played Graceful Charity?"

Joseph had a flashback to Ralph discarding two cards after activating Graceful Charity. It dawned on Joseph. "Oh, yeah"

Ralph declared, "Now to bring back that spellcaster." The coffin then opened, revealing to Joseph that the Dark Magician was inside. Ralpj announced, "Behold, the Dark Magician (2500/2100)." The Dark Magician then jumped out of the coffin and onto the field.

Joseph confessed, "I'm star-struck, the Dark Magician is the king of Yugi's deck."

Ralph declared, "If you're star-struck now, I'm sure you'll be honored by this. Dark Magician, destroy his Lion Attack Pack! Dark Magic Attack!" The Dark Magician then destroyed Lion Attack Pack, and Joseph lost 900 Life Points, bringing him down to 7100.

Ralph added, "I have you trapped. Even if you draw a powerful enough card to destroy Dark Magician, my Swords of Revealing Light are still active for 2 more turns. And if you summon anything to sacrifice, Dark Mafician will destroy it so you'll never get the monsters you need to sacrifice."

Joseph looked at his hand and thought, "He's right. None of my monsters can beat his Dark Magician. The closest one is The Masked Avenger with 2500 Attack Points, just like the Dark Magician. But he requires two sacrifices, and I don't have any on the field. Looks like I'll have to draw for one. And even if I don't get one, I still have Monster Reborn in my hand. Here goes."

Jenn saw how nervous Joseph was and said, "Looks like Joseph is starting to doubt himself."

Joseph drew Kitty, the Talking Horse, and said, "I pass this turn."

Ralph, calm and collected, drew Lightforce Sword and set it face down. "Lightforce Sword is ready. Your next move might be your last, Joseph."

Joseph drew his card, only for Ralph to activate his trap. "Now, Lightforce Sword! It removes a random card from your hand for three turns."

Joseph grimaced, watching the chosen card disappear. "You're ruthless, Ralph. But I'm not done yet. I play Monster Reborn. This card lets me bring back one monster from my graveyard, and I choose Mountain Lion Attack Pack (1600/1200). Next, I'll sacrifice both my monsters to summon my deck's king: The Masked Avenger (2500/2400)! And thanks to his special ability, I can summon his horse, Toronado (1950/1200). And it gets 300 more Attack points just for standing near his master."

Toronado then gained 300 extra attack points, bringing him up to 2250.

Joseph continued, "Still, Swords of Revealing Light block my assault. I'll strategize and wait for the right moment."

Ralph drew Dark Magician Girl, but hesitated. "No move this turn. I'm holding my cards tight."

Joseph's anticipation built. "I draw Felix, the Queen's Guard (1300/1000), and I summon him in Defense Mode. I'll now switch Toronado to defense mode and end my turn."

Ralph drew Monster Reborn from his deck and activated it. Palph exclaimed, "I play Monster Reborn and revive Watapon (200/300). Next, I'll sacrifice it to summon The Dark Magician Girl (2000/1700).

Once summoned, Joseph smiled in pleasure because the Dark Magician Girl was always a classic of Yugi's. Joseph said, "It's her. I couldn't be more thrilled to see her. The Dark Magician Girl is just as famous as The Dark Magician."

Ralph remarked, "Don't love it too much. Dark Magician Girl, destroy Felix, the Queen's Guard!" Joseph countered, "Activate trap. Net Rope Snare. This card only works when you have at least two monsters on the field. Now it snares your Dark Magician Girl with a rope and catches Dark Magician with a net. Now they're unable to attack until they get removed from the field."

Joseph felt the tension break as Swords of Revealing Light faded away. "The barrier is down! I draw Fusion Gate, and now, Ralph, watch closely—I activate Fusion Gate, fusing The Masked Avenger and Toronado to bring forth The Masked Horse Rider (2700/2800)!"

Ralph leaned forward, eyes focused. "Impressive. But remember, you can't attack with your Fusion monster this turn."

Joseph grinned, not missing a beat. "I sacrifice Felix to summon Kitty, the Talking Horse (2100/2600). Kitty, attack Dark Magician Girl!" His voice rose as the attack resolved, yet it did not affect Dark Magician. Joseph was surprised and asked, "What happened? My attack should have destroyed your Dark Magician Girl."

Ralph clarified, "When I played Graceful Charity, I sent two cards to the graveyard. One was my Dark Magician so that I could use Dark Renewal. The other one saved me." Ralph took the card from his graveyard and showed it to Joseph. Ralph said, "My Electromagnetic Turtle (0/1800). Since my Swords of Revealing Light trapped you, you couldn't make any attack until now. So when you attacked, my Electromagnetic Turtle's special ability kicked in and saved my Dark Magician Girl."

Joseph continued his turn. "And now, I activate my duel armor—merging myself with The Masked Horse Rider!"

Ralph watched as Joseph transformed, aura pulsing with new strength. "Now you're really in the game, Joseph. Let's see what you do next."

Joseph's determination burned. "The turn ends, and the card banished by Lightforce Sword returns to my hand. I'm ready for what's next!"

Jenn's presence lingered on the video screens. "You both have shown clever tactics. The duel is far from over—prove you're worthy of the finals."
