Chapter Eighteen: The New Student

#caf1_18

Monday morning arrived with gray skies and a chill in the air. Daniel stood at his bedroom window, staring at the clouds that seemed to mirror his mood. A week had passed since his meeting with Evil Buddha, and while the guilt over Eden's death had lessened slightly, it still lingered like a shadow at the back of his mind.

But he couldn't hide forever.

"You have to go to school today," Daniel told himself, tightening his grip on his backpack strap. "You can't just disappear. People will notice."

Caroline, who was lounging on his bed, looked up at him with her golden eyes. "You're stalling. Just go already. The sooner you leave, the sooner you'll come back and feed me."

Daniel rolled his eyes. "You're so demanding, you know that?"

"I'm a cat. It's my nature."

Daniel couldn't help but smile as he scratched behind her ears. "Fine. But you better not destroy the house while I'm gone."

"No promises."

The ride to school was uneventful, but Daniel couldn't shake the feeling that something was different. The streets seemed quieter, the air heavier. Even the birds seemed to be watching him as he pedaled past.

Or maybe I'm just paranoid, he thought. Ever since the transformation, his senses had been on high alert. He could hear conversations from blocks away, smell emotions on people as they passed, feel the vibrations of footsteps through the ground.

It was overwhelming. And it was only going to get worse.

When he finally reached Crimson High School, Daniel parked his bicycle and took a deep breath. The building looked the same as always—red brick walls, tall windows, students milling about the entrance. But something felt off. There was a tension in the air, a whisper of something new.

Daniel made his way to his classroom, keeping his head down. He didn't want to attract attention. He didn't want anyone to notice the changes in him—the broader shoulders, the more confident stride, the way his eyes seemed to glow faintly in the shadows.

But of course, someone noticed.

"Daniel!"

He looked up to see Felicia rushing toward him, her black hair bouncing with each step. She was dressed in a pink sweater and white skirt, looking as beautiful as ever. Her blue eyes were wide with concern.

"Where have you been?" she asked, stopping just inches from him. "You've been absent all week! I was so worried!"

Daniel felt a warmth spread through his chest. She'd been worried about him. "I was...sick," he said lamely. "Just a bad flu."

Felicia narrowed her eyes, studying him. "You don't look sick. You look...different."

Daniel's heart skipped a beat. "Different how?"

"Stronger," Felicia said, her gaze traveling over his arms and chest. "Have you been working out?"

Daniel felt his cheeks flush. "Uh, yeah. A little."

Felicia smiled, but there was something knowing in her expression. "Well, I'm glad you're back. School's been boring without you."

Before Daniel could respond, the classroom door opened and Mr. Rowling walked in, his permanent frown firmly in place. "Everyone, take your seats. We have a new student joining us today."

Daniel's eyebrows rose. A new student? In the middle of the semester?

He made his way to his seat, which was thankfully far from Walter and his gang. The bullies hadn't bothered him since his transformation—they seemed to sense that something had changed about him. But Daniel knew it was only a matter of time before they tried something again.

"The new student comes from Moon City," Mr. Rowling announced, his voice carrying a hint of annoyance. "I expect you all to be welcoming."

Moon City? Daniel's ears perked up. That was where Orpheus Rodolfo lived. Where the supernatural was said to be rampant.

The classroom door opened again, and a figure stepped inside.

Daniel's breath caught in his throat.

The boy was tall and slender, with an almost supernatural grace to his movements. His hair was the color of blood—long, curly, and cascading down to his shoulders. His eyes were red, a deep crimson that seemed to glow in the fluorescent light. His face was strikingly beautiful, with high cheekbones, a sharp jawline, and lips that curved into a faint, knowing smile.

He was dressed in a red jacket over a white shirt, black trousers, and polished red shoes. Everything about him screamed elegance and power.

"Class, this is Orpheus Rodolfo," Mr. Rowling said, though his tone suggested he wasn't particularly happy about it. "He's transferred from Moon City Academy. Please make him feel welcome."

Orpheus bowed slightly, his red eyes scanning the room. When they landed on Daniel, they paused. The smile on his lips widened just a fraction.

Daniel felt his wolf instincts surge. There was something about this boy—something dangerous. Something...supernatural.

Orpheus was a Crimsone. Daniel was sure of it.

"Thank you, Mr. Rowling," Orpheus said, his voice smooth as silk. "I'm sure I'll enjoy my time here."

The girls in the class were already whispering among themselves, their eyes fixed on Orpheus with obvious admiration. Even Felicia seemed captivated, her cheeks flushing slightly as she stared at the new student.

Daniel felt a pang of jealousy. He'd been crushing on Felicia for months, and now this perfect, handsome, mysterious vampire had to show up and steal her attention.

"Orpheus, you can take the seat next to Miss Dwayne," Mr. Rowling said, gesturing to the empty desk beside Felicia.

Daniel's heart sank. Of course. The universe was conspiring against him.

Orpheus walked toward the seat, his movements fluid and graceful. As he passed Daniel's desk, he paused and looked down, his red eyes meeting Daniel's brown ones.

"Daniel Stark," he said quietly, just loud enough for Daniel to hear. "I've heard about you."

Daniel's blood ran cold. "What do you want?"

Orpheus smiled—a charming, disarming smile that made Daniel's wolf want to growl. "Just to talk. After school. Meet me by the old oak tree at the edge of the woods."

Before Daniel could respond, Orpheus continued walking and took his seat beside Felicia. He immediately struck up a conversation with her, his voice low and melodic. Felicia laughed at something he said, her eyes sparkling.

Daniel clenched his fists under his desk. What was a Crimsone doing at his school? What did he want?

And why did he want to talk?

~

The rest of the morning passed in a blur. Daniel couldn't focus on any of his classes. His mind kept drifting to Orpheus—to the way he moved, the way he spoke, the way he looked at Daniel with those knowing red eyes.

At lunch, Daniel sat alone at a table in the corner of the cafeteria, picking at his food. He'd hoped Felicia would join him, but she was sitting with Orpheus, laughing at his jokes and hanging on his every word.

"Hey, loser."

Daniel looked up to see Walter standing over him, his green eyes filled with malice. His gang of four bullies stood behind him, their expressions matching their leader's.

"What do you want?" Daniel asked, his voice flat.

Walter sneered. "I saw you talking to the new kid. What, you think you can make friends with someone like him? He's out of your league, Stark. Just like Felicia."

Daniel felt a growl building in his throat. His wolf was pushing against his control, urging him to fight back. But he couldn't—not here, not now. Not with so many people watching.

"I don't want any trouble," Daniel said, forcing his voice to remain calm.

"Too bad," Walter said, reaching out to grab Daniel's collar. "Because trouble just found you."

But before Walter's hand could make contact, a voice cut through the air like a blade.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you."

Everyone turned to see Orpheus standing a few feet away, his red eyes fixed on Walter. There was a subtle glow in them, a hypnotic quality that made Walter freeze.

"Who asked you?" Walter snarled, though his voice wavered slightly.

Orpheus smiled—a cold, dangerous smile. "No one. But I'm telling you anyway. Leave him alone."

Walter's face twisted with anger, but something in Orpheus's gaze made him hesitate. After a tense moment, he scoffed and backed away, motioning for his gang to follow.

"This isn't over, Stark," Walter muttered as he walked away.

Daniel let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. He looked up at Orpheus, his emotions a complicated mix of gratitude and suspicion.

"Why did you do that?" Daniel asked.

Orpheus shrugged, sliding into the seat across from him. "I don't like bullies. They're so...predictable."

Daniel studied him for a moment. "You're a Crimsone."

It wasn't a question.

Orpheus's smile didn't waver. "And you're a Lycanthrope. We're both Cursed, Daniel. That makes us more alike than you think."

"We're nothing alike," Daniel said, his voice hardening. "Crimsones kill people. They drink blood. They're monsters."

Orpheus's expression flickered—a brief flash of something that might have been pain. "Some of us are. But not all of us. My family doesn't hunt humans. We drink from blood bags, from hospitals. We live in peace."

Daniel wanted to argue, but something in Orpheus's voice made him pause. There was sincerity there, a vulnerability that surprised him.

"Why are you here?" Daniel asked. "Why Crimson Springs?"

Orpheus leaned back in his chair, his red eyes distant. "My father thought it was time for a change. Moon City was becoming...complicated."

Daniel remembered what Felicia had told him about Moon City—the supernatural activity, the Crimsones, the Lycanthropes. It made sense that a vampire family would want to leave.

But there was something else. Something Orpheus wasn't telling him.

"Look," Orpheus said, leaning forward. "I know you don't trust me. You have no reason to. But I think we can help each other."

Daniel raised an eyebrow. "How?"

"There's a war coming, Daniel. The Crimsones—the powerful ones, the ones who don't care about human life—they're planning something big. And they're hunting Lycanthropes like you. Special ones."

Daniel's blood ran cold. "How do you know that?"

Orpheus's red eyes met his. "Because they're hunting me too."

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The cafeteria buzzed around them, students laughing and chatting, oblivious to the supernatural drama unfolding in their midst.

"What do you want from me?" Daniel asked finally.

"Just a chance," Orpheus said. "A chance to prove that not all Crimsones are monsters. And a chance to work together to stop the ones who are."

Daniel wanted to say no. Every instinct told him to run, to get as far away from this vampire as possible. But something—maybe the wolf, maybe something deeper—made him pause.

"Fine," he said reluctantly. "But if you try anything, I'll—"

"I know," Orpheus interrupted with a smile. "You'll tear my throat out. I'd expect nothing less from a Lycanthrope."

Daniel couldn't help but snort. "You're weird."

"So I've been told."

~

After school, Daniel walked home with his mind racing. Orpheus had given him a lot to think about—the war, the Crimsones, the fact that he wasn't alone in his supernatural struggles.

But he still didn't trust him. He couldn't. Crimsones were enemies of Lycanthropes. That was the way it had always been.

Wasn't it?

When he got home, Caroline was waiting for him on the kitchen counter. She meowed in greeting, her golden eyes studying him carefully.

"You met someone today," she said. "Someone important."

Daniel sighed, sitting down at the table. "You're too perceptive for a cat."

"I'm not just a cat, remember?"

Daniel looked at her, remembering the strange golden glow he'd seen the other night. "What are you, Caroline? Really?"

Caroline was silent for a long moment. Then she jumped off the counter and padded over to him, rubbing against his leg.

"When you're ready to know, I'll tell you," she said. "But for now, just know that I'm on your side. Always."

Daniel reached down and stroked her soft fur. "Thanks, Caroline. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You'd probably starve. Now feed me."

Daniel laughed, the sound echoing through the empty house. For the first time in weeks, he felt a sense of hope. Maybe—just maybe—things were going to be okay.

~

Later that night, Daniel lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. His phone buzzed with a message from Evil Buddha.

"How was school?"

Daniel smiled, typing back: "Interesting. There's a new student. A Crimsone."

There was a pause. Then: "Orpheus Rodolfo?"

Daniel's eyes widened. "How do you know?"

"I've been expecting him. He's important, Daniel. More important than you know."

Daniel's heart raced. "What do you mean?"

"Remember what I told you about The Veil? Orpheus is connected to us. His blood is the key to something big. Something that could change everything."

Daniel stared at the message, his mind reeling. What was Orpheus hiding? What was The Veil planning?

And what role would Daniel play in all of it?

He didn't have the answers. But he knew one thing for certain: his life would never be the same again.
