Chapter 228 - Chapter 223:A Champion’s Arrival — Hearts in the Open Sky

The road that led into Viridian City unfolded like a familiar memory brought back to life, each step forward carrying with it a quiet sense of nostalgia and change. The once-simple entrance, where a young and inexperienced trainer had nervously taken his first steps into the wider world, now stood before a very different version of that same boy. The wooden sign bearing the city's name creaked gently in the midday breeze, its worn edges telling stories of countless journeys begun and ended beneath its shadow.

Ash slowed as they approached the entrance, his eyes lingering on the gate for just a moment longer than necessary. There was something grounding about returning here not as a hopeful beginner chasing a dream, but as someone who had already grasped it.

On his shoulder, Pikachu let out a soft, content sound, as if sensing the shift in his trainer's thoughts. Eevee, trotting at his side, gave a cheerful bounce, completely unburdened by nostalgia and focused only on the excitement of a new place.

"It feels different, doesn't it?" Misty's voice came from beside him, light yet perceptive.

Ash smiled faintly. "Yeah… it does."

Misty didn't need more explanation. Her arm slipped naturally through his, her grip firm yet relaxed, as if she had always belonged there. Her presence was warm familiar in a way that didn't demand attention, but always offered it.

Behind that simple gesture, however, was something far more intentional.

She leaned in slightly closer than necessary.

Not subtle.

Not hidden.

Deliberate.

Sabrina, walking on his other side, noticed immediately. Her gaze shifted briefly toward Misty, then back to Ash. Without a word, her fingers intertwined with his hand, her touch gentle but unmistakably possessive in its quiet confidence.

Where Misty's affection was bright and expressive, Sabrina's was controlled—subtle, yet impossible to ignore once noticed.

Ash, caught between the two, let out a quiet breath that was half amusement, half helplessness.

"You two are starting early today," he murmured.

Misty smirked. "What? We're just being honest."

Sabrina's lips curved faintly. "Honesty is… important."

Ash shook his head, though the warmth in his expression betrayed any real complaint.

A few steps behind them, Daisy observed the scene with keen interest, her sharp eyes catching every little detail the closeness, the timing, the silent competition unfolding in gestures rather than words.

A slow, amused smile spread across her lips.

"Well, I can't fall behind, can I?" she muttered softly to herself.

Without hesitation, she closed the distance between them, her stride confident as she slipped in beside Ash. Her shoulder brushed against his arm first light, intentional contact. Then her hand followed, resting casually along his forearm before sliding naturally into place.

It was smooth.

Effortless.

Experienced.

Ash blinked, momentarily caught off guard. "Daisy?"

She tilted her head slightly, her expression playful yet undeniably bold. "What? I'm just keeping things balanced."

Misty let out a short laugh. "Balanced? That's what you call it?"

"Of course," Daisy replied smoothly. "Wouldn't want him getting overwhelmed by just the two of you."

Sabrina said nothing but her grip on Ash's hand tightened ever so slightly.

Ash exhaled, already sensing where this was heading.

"…This is going to be a long day," he muttered.

They stepped fully into Viridian City, and the atmosphere shifted instantly.

The quiet roads gave way to movement people crossing paths, vendors calling out to passersby, trainers exchanging stories, laughter rising and falling in waves across the streets.

The scent of food drifted through the air, blending with the faint metallic hum of machinery from the transportation district.

But it didn't take long for something else to spread.

Recognition.

At first, it was just a glance.

Then a pause.

Then a whisper.

"…Is that him?"

"No way…"

"That's the Champion !"

Heads began to turn. Conversations faltered mid-sentence. A ripple of excitement spread outward as more and more people realized exactly who had just walked into their city.

Ash Ketchum.

The name carried weight now.

And that weight was becoming very, very visible.

Ash rubbed the back of his head awkwardly as the attention grew. "Ah… here we go."

Misty grinned, clearly entertained. "You brought this on yourself."

"I didn't do anything!" Ash protested weakly.

Daisy laughed softly. "Winning the entire league tends to have that effect."

Within moments, a small crowd had gathered not overwhelming, but dense enough to make moving forward difficult. Trainers looked at him with admiration, curiosity, and in some cases, outright disbelief.

"Can we battle you?!"

"Your match in the finals was insane!"

"Is it true you control legendary Pokémon?!"

Ash raised both hands slightly, trying to calm the rising energy. "It's not like that really, I just "

He didn't get to finish.

Misty moved first.

With complete confidence and zero hesitation, she leaned in and pressed a quick kiss against his cheek.

The reaction was immediate.

Gasps rippled through the crowd like a shockwave.

Ash froze mid-sentence.

"…Misty?"

She pulled back with a satisfied smile. "What? Champion deserves a proper welcome."

Daisy's eyes sparkled with amusement.

"Oh, we're doing that openly now?" she said, her tone light but clearly competitive.

Before Ash could react, she stepped closer and mirrored the gesture placing a soft kiss on his opposite cheek, lingering just a fraction longer.

The crowd erupted.

"WAIT WHAT?!"

"HE HAS TWO ?!"

"IS THIS REAL?!"

Ash's face turned bright red. "H-Hey !"

Pikachu burst into laughter, nearly losing its balance on his shoulder.

Sabrina watched the scene quietly for a moment, her expression unreadable. Then, without a word, she stepped forward, her presence shifting the atmosphere almost instantly.

Where Misty and Daisy were playful, Sabrina was precise.

She reached up, gently guiding Ash's attention toward her and before he could fully process it, she placed a soft, deliberate kiss on his lips.

The world seemed to stop.

The noise.

The movement.

Everything.

When she pulled back, her expression remained calm, though a faint blush colored her cheeks.

"I believe equality has now been established," she said softly.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Ash's brain had completely shut down.

"…I'm going to pass out," he muttered.

A short distance away, Giselle stood completely still.

Her mind struggled to process what she had just witnessed.

This wasn't hidden.

This wasn't secret.

This wasn't something whispered behind closed doors.

It was open.

Confident.

Unapologetic.

They weren't afraid of judgment.

They weren't worried about appearances.

They simply… expressed what they felt.

Her gaze slowly shifted back to Ash.

To the way he reacted.

Flustered, yes.

Embarrassed, absolutely.

But not rejecting them.

Not pushing them away.

Not uncomfortable in the way she expected.

Instead…

There was warmth.

Acceptance.

Something genuine.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the strap of her bag.

"…Why?" she whispered to herself.

She didn't understand it.

Didn't understand them.

Didn't understand him.

And yet…

She couldn't look away.

A strange feeling began to take shape in her chest subtle at first, easy to ignore.

But persistent.

Growing.

A quiet sting.

Unfamiliar.

Unwanted.

Jealousy.

She frowned slightly, immediately rejecting the thought.

"That's ridiculous," she muttered under her breath.

And yet…

Her eyes lingered on him just a moment longer than they should have.

Eventually, the group managed to move away from the crowd, slipping through the busy streets and making their way toward the transportation district.

The environment shifted once more.

The buildings grew larger, more industrial. The air carried the scent of fuel and metal, mixed with the constant hum of engines and machinery. Massive docking platforms stretched into the sky, supported by reinforced steel structures that gleamed under the sunlight.

And there, anchored high above

Blimps.

Enormous airships floated steadily, their massive frames casting long shadows across the ground. Workers moved efficiently across platforms, preparing for departures, checking equipment, guiding passengers.

Ash's eyes lit up slightly as he took it all in.

"So that's how we're getting to Valencia Island."

Misty crossed her arms with a satisfied smile. "Took long enough."

Daisy stretched lightly, her posture relaxed. "I just hope it's comfortable. I'm not spending hours in something cramped."

Sabrina observed silently, her gaze thoughtful as she took in the structure and movement around them.

Giselle stood quietly behind them.

Still watching.

Still thinking.

Still feeling something she couldn't quite name.

Ash turned back toward the group, his usual bright, confident smile returning.

"Let's get our tickets," he said. "The Orange Islands are waiting."

And as they stepped forward together

A Champion surrounded by love he never expected…

Three girls unafraid to claim their place beside him…

And one girl quietly beginning to question her own heart…

The journey continued.

Not just toward a new region.

But toward something far deeper.

Something none of them fully understood yet.

But something that had already begun to change them all.
