The vast ocean shimmered under the bright midday sun as the group continued their journey deeper into the Orange Islands. The peaceful rhythm of the waves carried them forward, but ahead, something far more imposing began to rise on the horizon.
A towering island, rugged and steep, its rocky mountain piercing into the sky like a challenge itself.
Navel Island.
Ash leaned forward slightly on Lapras, eyes shining with interest. "That has to be the next gym."
Misty followed his gaze and let out a low whistle. "You're kidding… we have to climb that?"
Daisy chuckled softly behind them. "What? Getting tired already?"
"I'm not tired!" Misty shot back instantly, puffing her cheeks. "I just… didn't sign up for mountain climbing!"
Sabrina, resting calmly at Ash's side, spoke in her usual composed tone. "It's a test. Not just of Pokémon strength… but of the trainer as well."
Ash smiled faintly. "Good. That makes it more interesting."
Behind them, Tracey clung to the back of Shiny Gyarados, eyes wide with excitement. "This is incredible! A mountain gym! I've never seen anything like this before!"
Giselle remained quieter, her gaze fixed on Ash rather than the mountain. There was something about the way he looked at challenges not with fear, but with excitement that made her chest feel… strange.
When they arrived at the base, the cold air hit them immediately, a sharp contrast to the warm sea they had just crossed. The rocky terrain stretched upward endlessly, making the climb ahead look even more daunting.
Waiting for them was the Gym Leader Danny.
He stood with arms crossed, a confident smirk on his face as he looked Ash up and down. "So, you're the Kanto Champion everyone's talking about."
Ash scratched his cheek casually. "I guess word travels fast."
Danny let out a short laugh. "We'll see if you're as good as they say. My gym doesn't rely on just battles. You'll need strength, skill… and teamwork."
Misty leaned toward Ash and muttered, "Why do I feel like this is going to be annoying?"
Ash smirked. "Because it probably is."
The first challenge came without delay.
"Race you to the top," Danny said, already stepping toward the mountain. "No shortcuts. No tricks."
Ash grinned. "You're on."
Without hesitation, both of them began climbing.
The rocks were cold and rough, the incline steep enough to test even experienced climbers. But Ash moved with surprising ease, his body strong and well-conditioned. His grip was steady, his movements efficient, as if this was just another part of his training.
Pikachu scampered ahead, occasionally turning back with a confident "Pika!" while Eevee followed close behind, nimble and balanced.
Below, the girls and Tracey took the zip line path.
As Misty slid down, wind rushing past her, she shouted, "Hey Ash! Don't fall! I'm not coming up there to save you!"
Ash called back without looking down, "You'd probably trip halfway!"
"HEY!"
Daisy laughed openly. "You two never change."
Sabrina watched quietly, her eyes following Ash's movements. "He's not struggling at all…"
Giselle gripped the zip line tighter than necessary, but her eyes never left him. How… is he climbing like that so easily?
By the time Ash reached the summit, he barely looked winded.
Danny arrived moments later, raising an eyebrow. "Not bad."
Ash shrugged. "You're pretty good yourself."
Danny smirked. "Let's see how you handle the real challenges."
The first trial began.
A steaming pool of water bubbled in front of them, heat rising visibly into the cold air.
"Freeze it," Danny said simply.
He sent out Nidoqueen immediately. "Ice Beam!"
A strong beam of icy energy shot forward, rapidly freezing the surface.
Misty, watching from the side, nodded. "That's pretty solid."
Ash stepped forward calmly. "Lapras."
The moment the Ice Empress appeared, the temperature dropped noticeably.
Giselle's eyes widened slightly. "Even now… I'm still not used to that presence…"
Danny narrowed his eyes. "That's… no ordinary Lapras."
Ash smiled faintly. "You could say that."
"Lapras, Ice Beam."
What followed wasn't just an attack.
It was overwhelming.
The beam surged forward with terrifying precision, instantly freezing the entire pool solid thicker, cleaner, and far more complete than before.
Danny blinked. "…Yeah. That's not normal."
Misty pumped her fist. "That's our girl!"
Lapras let out a proud, regal cry, clearly pleased with herself.
First round Ash.
The second challenge shifted tone completely.
"Build an ice sled," Danny explained. "Three Pokémon each. First one done wins."
Ash crouched slightly, thinking. "Alright… let's try something different."
"Pikachu, Eevee, Growlithe you're up."
Growlithe barked excitedly, tail wagging furiously.
Danny smirked. "Interesting choice."
The moment the challenge began, both teams got to work.
Danny's team focused on raw efficiency Machoke carving, Scyther slicing, Nidoqueen shaping.
Ash's team, however…
"Eevee, switch to Glaceon freeze this section."
"Now Vaporeon smooth it out."
"Pikachu, guide them watch the balance."
"Growlithe, keep stabilizing the edges."
Tracey's jaw dropped as he sketched rapidly. "He's… coordinating them like a construction team!"
Daisy smiled proudly. "That's Ash for you."
Misty crossed her arms with a grin. "They're perfectly in sync."
Even Giselle couldn't deny it. "They're… working like they can read each other's minds…"
In the end both sleds were completed at nearly the same time.
Danny laughed. "Looks like a tie."
Ash smirked. "Works for me."
The final challenge began immediately.
"Race to the bottom," Danny said, mounting his sled. "First one there wins everything."
Ash stepped onto his, steady and focused. "Let's do it."
The moment they launched forward, the mountain turned into a blur of speed and danger.
Sharp turns. Sudden drops. Ice cracking beneath pressure.
"Hold on!" Misty shouted from below as she watched.
Ash leaned forward, voice calm but firm. "Pikachu, left turn now!"
"Eevee, adjust balance!"
"Growlithe, stabilize!"
Each command came at the perfect moment.
Danny's sled was fast but Ash's was controlled.
"Come on… come on…" Giselle whispered under her breath, gripping her hands tightly.
The final stretch approached.
One last turn and Ash executed it perfectly.
And crossed the finish line first.
Silence lasted only a second.
Then
"We won!" Misty cheered loudly.
Daisy clapped, smiling brightly. "That was amazing."
Sabrina stepped forward, her gaze soft. "Your control was flawless."
Giselle hesitated… then quietly said, "That… was incredible."
Ash scratched his cheek, smiling. "Thanks."
Danny walked up, shaking his head with a grin. "You've earned it."
He handed over the badge.
"The Sea Ruby Badge."
Ash took it, holding it up briefly as Pikachu cheered.
The girls quickly surrounded him.
Misty hugged him first. "You were amazing out there!"
Daisy followed, wrapping an arm around him. "As expected."
Sabrina leaned close, her voice soft. "You never disappoint."
Even Giselle stepped closer this time, her cheeks slightly flushed. "…Congratulations."
Ash smiled at all of them.
Then
