"Hi yourself," the girl replied, offering him a hand. Kharter hesitated for a moment, then reached up and grasped it. With her help, he managed to regain his footing and stood up, feeling a flush of embarrassment creeping into his cheeks.
"Thanks," he muttered, brushing off his clothes as if it could somehow erase the awkwardness of his fall.
"No problem," she said, her smile widening. "First-day jitters, huh?"
Kharter nodded sheepishly, trying to play off his embarrassment with a nervous chuckle. "Yeah, something like that. I guess I was just a little too eager to get to class."
The girl laughed lightly, and Kharter found himself relaxing slightly under her friendly demeanor. "Well, just take it easy," she said. "You'll get the hang of things around here soon enough."
"Thanks," Kharter said again, feeling grateful for her reassurance. "I'm Kharter, by the way. Kharter Ellis."
"Pleasure to meet you, Kharter," she replied, extending her hand once more. "I'm Emma."
As they shook hands, Kharter couldn't help but notice the warmth of her touch and the sparkle in her eyes. Maybe moving to Rashford wouldn't be so bad after all, he thought, with someone like Emma by his side.
Just then, the bell rang, signaling the start of classes. Kharter and Emma exchanged a quick smile before parting ways, each heading to their respective classrooms.
As Kharter settled into his seat, he couldn't shake the feeling that his first day at Trenton High School was going to be the beginning of something extraordinary.
