Chapter 1 - Awakening: Embers of the Dead

Alexander woke early for school as his final day for training at the famous Xavier's school for gifted Hunters ended.

He had entered the famous school, named after the famous Hunter who gave up nearly everything to save the Island of Hawaii, as an special admission. Now was the day all his hard work would pay off.

Short currly black hair and dark circles around his golden hazel eyes gave Alexander a overworked look. His light tanned skin was pastey, as the weeks of study and all nighters caught up with him.

His black and red uniform was pressed and snugg, it looked perfect in his eyes, though he didn't show it was a little tight around the crouch.

'Another day started, mom, dad. I'll make you proud and take care of this place. when I turn eighteen I'll take this place back from those idiot lawyers, and actually fix this place up.'

The small brownstone home, that stood between two high rise skyscrapers, in the heart of Hawaii, Hawaii, was his home and an Orphanage were Alexander and three others stayed. In need of repairs and serious fixing, it was a cozy and humble home for those who were lost.

'Mothers embrace Orphanage. I wonder who came up with that one, Mom or Dad? I wish I knew you guys and knew the answers, but now, I got to go school.'

At the school, after a long school bus ride, the celebration of the graduating class from Xavier's school for Hunters was short and simple. A ceremony would take place for the students, a speaker will hand them their ranks and they would be dissmised back to go back home with their familes.

The speaker at the ceremony was an experienced Hunter from the Association. He looked very distinguished with silver hair and a neat and tidy uniform. He called everyone to the podium and they recived a small baox with a black device inside, showing them how to activate it.

The device measured their rank and displayed them both at UFG and in a bold red letter from F- rank to A-rank.

As the excited tones and gestures rose to a near deafening wave the representative gave one final announcement. A final test was expected at the end of three months to test their proficiency to join the Hunters Association.

Many did not hear the words of the representative but those who did already knew, and those who didn't were not many.

Alexander looked down at his device attached to his wrist with a defeated and pained look. The device was black metal wrist watch with a large red letter filling up the screen depicting a F for F-rank.

"Look at this looser guys," A bully like kid from a lower class than Alexander said. "An F - rank shouldn't go to this school. They should be in the Slums with the rest of their kind."

'Too top it all off, here comes the massive problems already. Universe, can you give me break today, please.'

"Don't start anything, Mark," A boy stood infront of them scowling. "The Professor and the representative from the United Federal Government are watching. If I don't get Knight status in the Association my family will disown me. He's not worth that."

Alexander nodded with the boy, feeling some relief that at least one of these idiots was smart.

"Yeah. I'm not worth it, Mark. Don't give your family anything more to be ashamed of," Alexander quipped. His hand was clenched and his other hand covered his device.

'This was a catastrophe. 'F ranked, curse the gods. Can we have one good thing happen to us, this is starting to be a series of very unfortunate events.'

"Watch yourself, freak. One of these days you might loose that luck," Mark said, using water magic to shoot a blast of cold water down on Alexanders head. The water chilled him to the bone and soaked his uniform.

Alexander squished to the bathroom and felt worst than a bully could ever make him as he stared at himself in the large mirrors. '

'F ranked. How can I make my dreams come true now? I can't even hunt now. Come on Alexander, you just need to get stronger. Now that you know, you can over come.'

The door to the bathroom flung open eerily, startling Alexander.

With large shoulders and a massive chest a beast would be jealous of, walked in to the bathroom looking for him. Kahawai, king of the school, and ranked number one in prospects for the Hunter's Association.

"We've been put on the same team for the Hunters trial with the rest of the class. Were having a meeting tonight by the old pier. You'll be there, or else." He looked displeased as he glanced at the device on Alexander's wrist. He sighed and walked out with a disappointed frown.

'That's concerning. He didn't even wait for my answer. This school never changes, even though I am ranked tenth in academics. They still treat me like this. Now to go back home to the real danger, telling the family.'

A few hours later, after traffic, the door to the Orphanage opened as Alexander took the first steps onto the porch.

"Lex!" An adorable girl with freckles named Seraphina asked. Her brilliant green eyes gleamed at her brother. Long red hair, the shade of vermillion, in curls shaped her pale face. When she spoke her slight Gaelic accent always showed itself

"Did they tell you your rank or have you always looked like a sad sack. Come in and tell us. Welcome home."

"Sigh. Seraphina, you have a duty to your big brother, not to be so annoying. I...I got the lowest rank possible."

"Oh, well come in anyways you silly. We got you something."

The two walked into a suprise party with snacks and a wide cake with happy birthday written clumsily in used candles from past birthdays.

'Its not my birthday.' He thought. "Its wonderful. I love it," He said instead.

"Don't be like that, we know it's bad and it says happy birthday. Congratulations on graduating!" A tall young man named Quin spoke, patting Alexander on the shoulder.

"Don't even think about putting a kick-me sticky note on my back." Alexander stretched his arms to his back and pulled a sticky note from his back that said kick me.

They laughed for what seemd like hours before the cake ran out and Alexander remembered the meeting.

"I'll be back guys, I got a party to go to. My classmates and I have this final test or something. This will be my last chance to get a good rank in the Association, since I have a low rank."

"Are yo going to be okay, big brother? I don't want you risking your life if you're going to be hurt." Seraphina squinted at Alexander for any signs of a lie, something she was good at.

"I'll be fine. Whats the worst that could happen. You literally have me tagged from the last time I went missing. So just come resuce me if I get lost."

"Pinky promise?"

"Pinky promise, I swear." He responded.

"May the dark mother guide you back," Seraphina silently prayed.

...

The bus ride nearest the docks took an hour to walk from and smelled like rust and fish.

By the time he arrived everyone was seated around a roaring bonfire disscussing different topics.

"Not sorry I'm late. Had a real trek through the woods. Anyone could have given me a ride." Alexander joked, wearing a dark hood and grey joggers.

Kahawai ignored the comment and started speaking, his voice deeply reverberating for a seventeen year old. "The Hunter Trials are here. Some of us know how important that is, and others have no idea. I'll test each of you to my standards. Line up."

Alexander was confused as the group rose and walked to the docks, facing Kahawai. He also got up, forced by peer pressure to do the same.

Kahawaii, standing 6 feet tall, was stocky by any meaning of the word with dark long hair, Samoan features and a lot of tattoos that were tottly illegal for a kid but no one said a thing because of his family.

He pointed his hand towards a rusted trashbin someone placed here what seemed like eons ago. He condensed mana from his core, directing it into his finger like a lit cigarette.

The light became unbearable to Alexander's normal eyesight untill Kahawai fired the energy at the trashbin. The hole was no bigger than an inch wide but the damage was immense. The bin started melting from the heat within and soon callapsed in on itself.

"This was a first tier magic spell, something any D ranked Hunter could dodge. Everyone will show me you can either survive or dodge this attack to move forward. Some of you have trained with me for years, others not so much. I still expect the same from you all."

Kalani Akamai, cousin to Kahawai, was first. She had flowing black hair and a serious attitude. She was the closest thing to a warrior princess the school had and she knew it.

She dodged the spell as if she was flipping her hair, using the most minimal movement possible. The speed of the spell was insane, but her speed was unmatched.

Max, Nakamura, Kai, and Fox deflected the spell with various spells themselves. Neither was as fast as Kalani but showed their proficiency with mana.

The last up was Alexander. Starring down the glowing finger of fire that was Kahawai's hand brough sureal fear. Heat caused distortions in the air around it that reminded him of a barrel of a gun.

"You're joking right, Kahawai? There's no way I can dodge that. I'm only an F ranked Hunter. I've never trained in my life. You could kill me!"

"You can blame no one but yourself, Alexander." He showed Alexander his device, a letter D dipicted on the digital screen. "You either survive or die here. Look at it as a mercy, would you rather die here or in a gate. I would rather die here than taking my team down with with me in a Gate."

"Wait that isn't fair! None of this is right. Are you all going to watch this crime happen?" Alexander pleaded getting a thumbs up from Kai, which pissed him off more.

"Survive then, prove us wrong!" Kahawai said, condensing the fire magic and shooting Alexander. The power burned an inch wide hole in his left side chest.

There was no pain at first as he took a step back, tripping over his own foot in confusion. He was furious at first, then more confused at the rushing water covering his body.

Alexander sunk deeper and deeper into the river falling over as he stumbled back.

'No! Not like this. Seraphina, Quin, Grey. I need to get back...'

Blood rushed out of the hole with every beat of his injured heart. His life flashed before him as darkness engulfed his body.

'Do you wish to live, little one?' A soothing voice reached him in the darkness of the water. It was familiar yet unknown to him, like a long lost family member.

'Yes.' He answered.

'Will you serve me, onto your diying breath and further still?'

'...yes,' He responded meekly in his mind, losing consciousness.

'Then you have been chosen, Guardian!'

A dark gloop flooded into his wound, shocking him back to conscienceness. Nanites, small hive like robots invaded and sealed his wound, moving fast to repair any life threatening problems.

In seconds he could breath and feel his body warming up, the effects of death reversed.

'Repairs continuing, damage is severe. New host found. Greeting, Host we areLunaris.'
