Vell and Sonder were shown to their room shortly afterwards.
It seemed nice enough.
There was not much to say about it. It was simply a room in an inn, as one would expect.
There were two small beds, a small table, a couple of small chairs, and a small window overlooking the street.
Everything was a little small.
The furniture was a little worn, but seemed clean enough, and the roof above their heads appeared to be in better condition than the one downstairs.
That was more than good enough.
The room also came with access to the bathroom, which was a pleasant surprise. After several days of traveling through rain and mud, both of them could do with a proper wash.
Sonder insisted that Vell go first.
She knew that out of the two of them, he'd want to get clean as soon as possible.
"Is it that obvious?" He said in jest.
Sonder could last a little while longer with the mud.
Vell gathered what he needed and went off to take his bath.
He did not take very long before calling for Sonder.
"Sonder?!" He yelled out for her.
She looked up from after she was passively sitting and staring in their room.
"Yes?"
"Could you come here for a moment?"
She put down what she was holding and went to see what he wanted.
Vell was beside the bathtub, half undressed, looking rather dissatisfied with the water.
"Would you mind heating this up a little?"
Sonder glanced at the water.
"Is it cold?"
"Lukewarm at best. Cold, if you ask me. I don't know about you, but I have no intention of sitting in cold water after spending several days being rained on. I don't want to ask any servant, or the innkeeper himself to heat up a little water for me. You've seen the day they had."
Sonder held out her hand over the bath.
There was a just faint shimmer in the air, and the water began to warm and steam began to rise.
She kept at it until the temperature was to Vell's liking, as he also had his hand in the water, then withdrew her hand.
"Is that better?" She asked.
"Much better. Thank you."
She turned to leave, but Vell spoke again.
"Actually- No. I wanted to ask if you would you mind making sure it doesn't get cold while I'm in it, but I think that would be a bit excessive."
Sonder gave him a flat look.
"What? It was only a thought," he said a little defensively.
"Enjoy your bath."
And with that, she left him to it.
Vell smiled to himself and settled into the warm water.
It was, he decided, a very good beginning indeed.
By the time Sonder took her turn, the sun was already beginning to set.
The days were growing short, and the strange weather had made the evening seem even darker than it ought to have been.
Vell had dressed. The Yellow Mage had given him a few loose linen shirt and pants. Just the very basics.
But he thought that it was a wonderful feeling to be in clean- cleaner clothes.
They had been drenched in the rain, but at least they weren't muddy.
Unlike his boots.
He returned to his room, but he did not feel particularly inclined to sit around doing nothing.
There was something he wanted to ask Meli.
