Chapter: 004 (Knocked Out by a Glare, Zhi Liyi and the Twins)

Dongfang Qincang ruled over an entire continent, standing above all and below none within its confines.

He had lived a long time, almost eight million years now, faced many challenges, made many mistakes, partaken in innumerable battles, and witnessed many things.

Yet, the thought of his third child was enough to shake his Dao Heart.

When he arrived at the entrance of the clan's treasury, a gray-haired, skinny man sat with his back to its black double doors, his face hidden beneath a straw hat.

The Emptiness Butterfly Clan Leader did not ignore this seemingly feeble sack of bones, for he was none other than the clan's North Protector, Dongfang Mo.

The old man slowly raised his head, just enough for one standing in Dongfang Qincang's position to see his chin, which held some curly gray hair strands. "Qincang, you're here? The commotion earlier, is the clan truly under attack?"

If anyone else on the continent heard what this beggar-looking man said, they would have dismissed him as someone tired of living and shaken their heads in pity.

However, their jaws would have hit the ground had they witnessed how the ruthless seventeenth generation Emptiness Butterfly Clan Leader showed such deference.

'Tsk, tsk. The Heavens are truly unfair,' Dongfang Qincang sighed inwardly. 'Back then, he had been no less a shining star than grandfather, his brother, but the ambush from the Buried Cicada Clan damaged his cultivation, forever cutting off his path to ascension. Forget ascension, his cultivation has even regressed to the Late-stage Zenith Heaven now. Soon, it will even fall to Mid-stage. Though he is no match for me in combat and I could strike him down easily, his identity demands respect.'

"No, Granduncle." He gave an honest response. "Time is but dust in the wind at the moment, I'm afraid. I will do well to fill you in on the details after I deal with the immediate crisis."

"…As long as the clan is not under threat of displacement or extinction, I do not truly care." Dongfang Mo spoke bluntly.

Minutes later, Dongfang Qincang departed from the treasury, his form dissipating into green and white dust once he was a few tens of feet from his granduncle.

Dongfang Mo raised his head and stared at the spot where his brother's descendant disappeared, gazing at that spot with two empty eye sockets as he muttered to himself. "Five Elements Fiend Fierce Beasts' Cores and Profound Ice-Jade Bed… As expected, the punishment turns into a death sentence."

He turned his head in another direction. "Lightless Desolate Valley…"

Dongfang Qincang soon arrived at the Emptiness Butterfly Mountain, its white walls seeming bleak and grim, unlike the serenity and beauty they once held for him. His steps were quick but carried a great weight.

Rounding the turn where the pool came into view, he pulled the artifacts and materials from his Inner World, ready to use them on his dying son, only to find him seated by the pool, absentminded and mumbling to himself.

Even the lowest level Immortals, the Human Immortals, also called Imminent Immortals, did not dream or hallucinate unless something profound, like specialized techniques or poison, was involved. So, how could he, a Zenith Heaven, be doing so?

As his son turned to face him and that pair of purple eyes, which his beloved had, came into view, the Emptiness Butterfly Patriarch could not help but call out in shock; "…S-son?"

Jing felt his newly acquired heart leap to his throat, and his mind went into overdrive.

Many thoughts swam to the surface of his mind all at once, so much so that none of them really stuck, most floating away in the turbulent currents.

Run? Remain still and wait to see what happens next, playing along? Apologize and explain?

'If only I had the Predecessor's complete memories, not just the thoughts that flashed through his mind in his final moments, I wouldn't have to worry so much!'

'Though, it isn't like there's no hope. This man before me should be his… my father, Dongfang Qincang, Current Head of the Void Butterfly Clan.'

Beyond that information, however, there was not much else. Most of the predecessor's thoughts in his last moments pertaining to his father were about how the man had mysteriously gone missing after ascending to divinity. Nothing about the present or the past.

The transmigrator did not waste too much time dwelling in his own mind. 'You know what? Let's just go with the safest bet.'

Then, his mouth opened, and three simple words escaped it. "…Who are you?"

Dongfang Qincang's entire being trembled slightly. "…!"

The blood-red-haired man was speechless for a moment, frozen in place.

"Where am I?" Dongfang Jing was no slouch. He served the dish while it was still freshly cooked. "Who… am I?"

His gestures, such as pointing at himself and looking around with facial expressions that conveyed confusion, trepidation, and curiosity, all blended into an award-winning performance.

'Tang Wan, you were such an unfaithful and ungrateful nutcase, but who would have thought that accompanying you to method acting back then would come in handy, saving my life in an Immortal world today?'

Watching as his newly acquired father walked over to him with an emotional face, Dongfang Jing believed that the crisis was averted.

Alas, it is never a good thing to count the chickens before they hatch.

When Dongfang Qincang arrived before his 'son' and squatted, the purple-eyed fellow recoiled away from him with a wary expression, keeping up the act.

The red-haired Clan Leader smiled warmly and said, "Think you can fool me? You Wraiths are truly bold."

At those words, his smile disappeared, and the last thing Jing saw before his consciousness slipped away from his grasp was a very ferocious glare from the man that he thought he had successfully deceived.

'This… how?'

'Wraiths…? Where?'

'Wait… was he referring to me? No way, right? …Right?'

He had many questions, but whether or not he would live to get answers was a very high uncertainty.

While Dongfang Qincang stared coldly at the once again unconscious form of his third son, his Immortal Sense searching for the Wraith that had possessed him, chaos rippled through many corners of the Universe, specifically the Divine Expanses.

Those that threaded the Dao of Fate and/or the Dao of Time suffered backlashes of varying degrees. It was so serious that some of them even lost some of their cultivation, falling a minor realm or two.

In a mansion in White Heaven Divine Expanse's Hollow Judgement Holy Land.

A young lady in a white dress with sky-blue embroidery sat cross-legged on a brown mat, her eyes covered by a blindfold.

She was cultivating peacefully, her fingers weaving intricate patterns as she practiced a certain technique, only for the technique to suddenly shatter completely.

Her entire being shook as if there was an earthquake, and the third eye on her forehead opened, revealing a golden eyeball.

As her skin paled at a visible rate, she muttered, "What event or existence could have caused the Pillars of Fate and Time to shake so violently?"

It took her a little over half an hour to decipher some information. Once she was done, she looked so weak and sickly it was hard to relate her to her earlier self.

Exhaling some turbid air that looked like smoke, a potion appeared in her right hand, which she drank in one gulp.

She took a moment to heal and restore her Divine Qi, making herself look more 'alive' but not as good as her original self.

Then, she summoned a palm-size square mirror and used it to communicate with the holders of the pairing artifacts.

Two people's faces appeared on her mirror; a pair of silver-haired women with identical faces. If one ignored the orange horn tapering out from one of their heads and the difference in temperaments and outfits, it would be easy—no, a certainty—to mistake them for the same person.

"Ruoyun, Ziyun…" Zhi Liyi called them. "I have a very important task for you."
