Chapter 0555 Censorate
-x-X-x-
"If it really comes down to it, will we have no choice but to rely on Princess Shio Fen?"
"That might be the case… but relying on the princess when she's just arrived…"
Abel and Ryo walked along as they chatted.
They didn't have any particular destination in mind.
But there was no reason to stay at the waiting area either…
Aside from the waiting area near the Imperial Palace and the Ryusen Residence, they didn't know many places.
"The maximum-security prison where Von Debout-san is held, it's located in the Censorate, right?"
"Yeah, that's what they said. Places like the Censorate and other government buildings are adjacent to the palace, right? Let's check it out."
Neither Ryo nor Abel had any expectation of achieving something or finding clues by going there.
The Censorate faced a main road.
Though many people passed by, none looked toward the Censorate.
It was more like they were deliberately avoiding it.
"It seems like a frightening place."
"Yeah, I doubt anyone wants to be involved with it."
They shared their impressions as they watched.
The Censorate building itself… wasn't shut tight.
In fact, the main gate stood wide open, with no guards in sight.
"There's no one standing guard?"
At Ryo's comment, Abel nodded silently.
Peeking past the gate, they saw another gate further inside.
That one was firmly shut.
And in between…
"There's a huge drum."
"Are we supposed to hit that to summon someone?"
There was a drum taller than a person just sitting there.
"This building or maybe this whole department has an overwhelming presence."
"Even if you haven't committed a crime, you can barely breathe here."
When Abel said that, Ryo gave him a sideways glance.
He looked like he had something very important to say.
"You don't need to say anything."
Abel cut him off quickly.
"I was about to list out the 108 crimes you've committed…"
"I haven't committed that many."
"So you admit to about 107, huh?!"
"No, I don't!"
Perhaps it was their banter—
Or maybe not… but just then, a voice called out from the street.
"Duke Rondo?"
"Yes?"
The man who spoke looked to be in his 40s, in the prime of his life.
He wore a long, moss-green Eastern robe that reached down to his shins. His hair was neatly tied up and secured with a small crown.
His sash wasn't flashy but tailored with elegance.
The sword in his left hand lacked ornamentation, but the worn grip showed it had seen much use.
Two young men, likely just of age, followed behind him, burdened with large packs.
Ryo looked at the man's face but couldn't place him.
But he had addressed him as 'Duke Rondo'.
Ryo had only revealed that title once, back in Fenmu, where the imperial mausoleum was located.
There, he had met with the Sixth Prince Ryun and others…
"Captain Li Chu of the White Flame Guard?"
"Ah, so it was indeed Your Grace."
Captain Li Chu hastily knelt to offer his respects, but Ryo quickly stopped him.
"No need for that, Captain. It'll just draw attention…"
"My apologies."
He stood upright and simply bowed his head.
Captain Li Chu belonged to the White Flame Guard, charged with protecting the emperor's tomb.
Last time Ryo met him, he was guarding the tomb—so what was he doing in the capital?
"The guarding of the imperial mausoleum rotates between four units, each serving a hundred days. Our White Flame Guard's duty ended two days after I met Your Grace. We have since returned to the capital."
"I see."
A hundred days of duty, followed by three hundred days of rest.
It might sound enviable—but it's not.
It means that during those hundred days, their work must be intense and highly focused.
That's likely why they are given three times the rest.
Not that anyone said those three hundred days were truly days off…
Captain Li Chu, and the rest of the White Flame Guard, were obviously well-trained.
Even though Ryo had been absorbed in reading, by the time he noticed them, he was already surrounded.
That alone showed how elite and disciplined their unit was—and how seriously they took their guarding duties.
"Your Grace, what brings you to the front of the Censorate?"
"Umm… Captain Li Chu, have you heard about the case of Count Matan?"
"Yes. The incident that occurred in the palace this morning, correct? I see Your Grace has already heard of it…"
"Well, I owed Count Matan a bit of a debt. I heard he's now in the high-security prison, and I was curious, so I came here… but I suppose I won't be able to see him, right?"
"A visit… would likely be difficult."
Captain Li Chu answered with a regretful expression.
However, he tilted his head slightly and asked.
"But I hadn't heard that Count Matan was an acquaintance of Your Grace?"
"Ah, actually… my identity as Duke Rondo is not publicly known yet."
"Eh? Why is that…"
"Well… I just wanted to freely explore the capital, you know…"
Ryo answered with a wry smile.
Seeing that expression, Captain Li Chu looked surprised.
He likely still remembered the intimidating aura Ryo had exuded in Fenmu.
To him, Ryo had been a frightening figure.
But that awkward smile now softened that impression a little.
Nodding firmly, he said,
"I understand. It's hard to even enjoy street food when everyone's watching you."
"Yes! Exactly! Captain Li Chu, you really understand!"
At that, the two of them laughed together.
"You've done it again, Ryo, charming everyone…"
Abel's quiet murmur went unheard by the others.
After a good laugh, Captain Li Chu glanced toward the Censorate and said,
"Meeting with Count Matan himself would be difficult, but perhaps I could arrange a meeting with the person in charge."
"Really?!"
Ryo was surprised by the unexpected offer.
Abel, standing behind him, was just as surprised.
"The one in charge of the Censorate is the Censor-in-chief, but he's rarely here. The person actually overseeing investigations, interrogations, and impeachments is Secretary Shau. If you're willing to reveal your identity as Duke Rondo, I believe I can make an introduction."
"Oh!"
"In fact, I came today to deliver something Shau-sama requested. I can introduce you when I deliver it. Of course, he probably won't share all the details of the investigation… but if we frame it as trying to prevent Count Matan's retainers from acting rashly, he might be more willing to cooperate."
"Thank you!"
Ryo nodded enthusiastically, clearly grateful for Captain Li Chu's suggestion.
Following Captain Li Chu's lead, Ryo and Abel proceeded behind him.
Instead of beating the drum, Li Chu knocked on a small side door in the gate, just wide enough for one person.
The door opened from within, and the group was ushered inside.
"…What's the drum even for then?"
Ryo muttered, his voice just audible.
Captain Li Chu chuckled and answered,
"That drum is for those who wish to file a formal complaint to the Censorate. It's not used for regular visits."
"Li Chu, I see you've brought the item I requested yesterday."
The one speaking—Secretary Shau—was likely over seventy years old. Yet, the word 'sprightly' suited him perfectly. He seemed like the type to laugh with a "ka-ka-ka".
"And this… astonishing person behind you, who might they be?"
His gaze was piercing.
"This is His Excellency, Duke Rondo of the Kingdom of Knightley, one of the Central Countries."
"A pleasure. I am Duke Rondo of Knightley."
"Oh… Duke Rondo of Knightley, you say…"
Upon hearing Ryo's greeting, Secretary Shau narrowed his eyes.
"Your Excellency, may I ask to see some form of identification? Forgive the discourtesy, but as someone who works for the Imperial Censorate, it is in my nature—shall we say, a professional habit—to investigate such matters thoroughly…"
"Of course. Here you go."
Ryo handed over a necklace.
Secretary Shau held it up to an alchemy tool brought by a subordinate.
He confirmed the floating inscription.
"Thank you. It is indeed as you say, premier duke of the Knighltey Kingdom. But… speaking of Duke Rondo of Knightley…"
He paused, casting a meaningful glance at Captain Li Chu.
Receiving the look, Captain Li Chu nodded and spoke.
"Yes. Likely just as you imagine, Sir Secretary."
"My goodness… to think he is that fearsome a man. Well, if the songs are true, then of course…"
Secretary Shau murmured, shaking his head slightly.
Ryo and Abel had no idea what the exchange meant.
They didn't know the bard's songs, after all.
"And may I ask, what brings such a noble figure to us?"
"Actually, it concerns Count Matan."
Ryo offered a brief explanation: that he and Abel had come in relation to Count Matan, who had aided them in the past.
"I see. It would indeed be troublesome if Count Matan's retainers were to act rashly. Especially now, with the wedding of the Sixth Prince Ryun approaching. If Your Excellency can help restrain them, it would be greatly appreciated."
"I intend to cooperate as much as I can."
"However, you will not be allowed to meet Count Matan or be present during questioning. This is the Censorate. No matter how high your rank, we cannot permit any deviation from the law."
Secretary Shau spoke with a smile—but his eyes were not smiling.
"Of course. However, I do have two specific requests concerning the interrogation."
"Go on."
"First, I'd like to know how he managed to take a sword from an imperial guard. His retainers say he is completely inept at martial matters. Second, I want to know what's inside his clothes."
At Ryo's words, Secretary Shau narrowed his eyes and asked,
"The first point—I also questioned that myself. For an imperial guard to be disarmed is unheard of. We've actually detained the soldier in question here at the Censorate. And are interrogating him now. But… what do you mean by the inside of his clothes?"
"There is testimony that, when he lunged to strike, there was a sweet scent coming from inside his garments. We're wondering if there might be something hidden there… Perhaps something related to sorcery."
Ryo stared directly at Secretary Shau.
With a gaze that seemed to say: I know what you are.
After holding that gaze for a moment, Secretary Shau looked away.
Chuckling.
"I'm curious who gave that testimony… but more than that, it's unsettling. It seems Your Excellency has realized that I am a practitioner of sorcery."
"Yes. I've met several sorcerers before. You have the same… feel to you."
Ryo nodded at Shau's words.
"When you mention something relating to sorcery in the chest area… you must be referring to the 'Puppet Technique'… It's a secret among secrets. Half-legendary. Even I only know of it in theory. Most wouldn't even know it's carved into the chest. So tell me—how does a duke from the Central Countries, where sorcery is said to be nonexistent, know of such a thing?"
"That's simple. I saw a similar spell used before my very eyes. A pentagram carved into the chest."
Ryo was referring to Duke Helb.
"There's someone who used it…? Was that here, in Darwei?"
"No, it wasn't."
"I see… Should I be relieved, or disturbed that there's someone beyond Darwei with such power…?"
Shau shook his head slightly.
After a moment's thought, he spoke.
"Now that you mention a sweet scent—I have heard of something. There's a technique that clouds consciousness when rubbed into the body. It's not sorcery per se, but…considering the nature of 'control', it might be quite relevant to this case."
"I see."
"We've actually already conducted the first interrogation of Count Matan. But he remained unconscious the entire time. We only examined his body… And there was no 'sweet scent' then. If it dissipates easily, perhaps it was Boranta poison."
Shau spoke with a furrowed brow.
It seemed the serious questioning would begin tomorrow.
Still, both Ryo and Abel couldn't help but wonder—was it really okay for an outsider like Ryo to be hearing all of this?
Even so, the information was valuable, so they nodded and listened attentively.
"Of course, that was just me thinking out loud. I may have said it a bit loudly, and someone may have overheard, but if anyone claims I said it, I'll deny it with all my strength."
"Understood."
Secretary Shau muttered, and Captain Li Chu nodded.
Ryo and Abel nodded silently as well.
Talking to oneself—it happens.
Yeah, can't be helped.
And so, Ryo and Abel left the Censorate.
Captain Li Chu remained behind to speak with Secretary Shau a while longer.
Perhaps because they were being watched, and he wanted to stagger the timing…
Left alone were Secretary Shau and Captain Li Chu.
"Li Chu… honestly, what a terrifying person you've gotten acquainted with…"
"My apologies. I guided the two of them during their visit to the Imperial Mausoleum…"
Shau spoke with a wry smile, and Li Chu responded in kind.
It was clear that he wasn't being seriously reproached.
"I've heard the bard's songs too. I thought the descriptions were typical exaggerations, but… That's no ordinary man—that's a monster."
"He's really that powerful?"
"Anyone who can see magic power would agree with me. A magician whose magic power doesn't leak out of their body at all—such a being should not exist."
Shau was a seasoned practitioner of sorcery.
And he could see magic power…
That was the result of rigorous training.
In fact, at the Darwei Censorate, there's a training regimen to develop mana perception.
Though it takes years, many do eventually acquire the ability.
As a matter of common sense, a magician with no mana leakage is unheard of.
So if such a person exists, they are beyond the bounds of reason.
In other words: a monster.
"Well… as far as the investigation into Count Matan goes, we've gained some very interesting information. I suppose the fear I felt was a small price to pay… that's how I'll have to look at it."
"I didn't realize it was that bad…"
He couldn't understand the level of fear that Shau had experienced.
"Being able to see magic power is incredibly useful. Even hidden enemies become visible. That benefit is immeasurable in the Censorate. But this time… never before has that ability scared me so much."
"Honestly, you didn't seem that surprised, Sir Secretary…"
"Of course not. Provoking someone like that—now that would be a terrible move. Look—now that it's over, I'm starting to sweat."
Secretary Shau said, shaking his head slightly.
"In any case… this situation has become extremely troublesome…"
His murmur didn't even reach Captain Li Chu.
-x-X-x-
The group led by Wei Fon—including Ryo and Abel—left the waiting area and returned to the Ryusen Residence.
"They were tailing us after all, weren't they?"
"Yeah. Those four Ryo mentioned earlier—if they move to follow us, it's easy enough to keep track of them."
"Abel, how did you know that even though you can't use magic?!"
"I could sense all twelve of them, including those four."
Abel said this with a small, pleased nod.
He seemed to be feeling that he wasn't entirely useless after all.
Seeing that, for some reason, Ryo looked frustrated.
"You're a swordsman! How dare you trespass into a magician's domain! Aren't you ashamed of yourself?!"
"Not at all."
The Ryusen Residence welcomed them back as usual.
Even with their lord being detained, there was no sign of persecution or being turned away.
"As expected of a first-class inn."
"Isn't that obvious?"
Abel replied as Ryo praised it.
"What are you talking about? In the typical story pattern, they'd say something like 'Pack your bags and get out!' and kick you out of the inn. Then, as soon as you step outside, the enemy is waiting, encircling you. And they say, 'Foolish retainers. I'll snuff out your lives along with your lord's!'"
Ryo began to enthusiastically describe a classic light novel storyline.
Abel shook his head slightly.
"I always wonder about this, Ryo—how do you keep coming up with these story ideas, one after another? That imagination of yours is seriously something else."
"Aw, you flatter me."
"Yeah, that wasn't a compliment."
Ryo blushed, while Abel corrected his misunderstanding.
The world is built on misunderstandings.
The group returned to their rooms for the time being, took baths, and then reconvened in front of the dining hall.
"A bath really is the best. It washes away the day's fatigue."
"True, though there's some fatigue that can't be washed away."
Abel said, glancing at the group, still visibly worn out.
Though they had gathered, everyone looked pale.
It was no surprise—after all.
Their lord had drawn a sword in the palace and been restrained and arrested.
Even though they had been told he was being treated fairly at the Censorate, the anxiety was understandable.
"I don't have an appetite…"
That quiet murmur came from Nuan, the second-in-command.
"I understand. But in my homeland, we have a saying: 'You can't fight on an empty stomach'. We must always be prepared to fight, no matter the time or situation. If we have to rescue Lord Von Debout and we're too hungry to act, we'll be in trouble. Being ready for that moment is part of our duty as retainers."
Ryo spoke gently, not sternly.
He wasn't just speaking to Nuan, but to all ten of the retainers gathered there.
"He's right. I agree with Ryo-san."
Wei Fon nodded as he spoke.
"For the lord's sake, we should always be ready to give our all. Fortunately, the Censorate is at least considering the possibility that he was under someone's control. He may not be fully cleared…but there's a chance he'll return to us alive."
The other retainers nodded at Wei Fon's words.
Ryo and Abel also gave small nods as they watched.
Hope was essential.
Without it, reckless desperation might erupt.
And no one wanted that.
"Alright, let's head into the dining hall."
"Yes!"
The nine others replied to Wei Fon, and Ryo and Abel nodded as well.
First, they needed to fill their stomachs!
The twelve were led to two six-person tables.
Tonight, there was no piano performance.
"No piano today, huh?"
Ryo commented with mild disappointment.
"There was a notice at the entrance. Said a bard named Wang A-Shi would be singing."
Abel replied.
Sure enough, a tall chair had been set up at the front.
"Oh! That sounds fun!"
Ryo smiled with excitement.
Back in the kingdom, he'd heard bards sing while playing lutes, narrating their songs.
Even at his regular spot, the 'Cafe de Chocolat – Capital Branch', he'd heard such performances.
The lutes played by bards from the Central Countries were like small guitars.
Just like Abel's violin, stringed instruments exist in all times and cultures.
So, Ryo was curious about what kind of instrument tonight's bard would use.
Incidentally, the piano hidden in the back also uses strings to produce sound…
As their meal progressed and dessert was served, the bard appeared.
He had light brown hair and eyes of the same color, with strikingly handsome features that would certainly appeal to women.
He looked to be in his mid-twenties.
He exuded both youthful charm and mature confidence…
If used skillfully, it could easily captivate women.
The instrument he held was…
"A harp?"
What came to Ryo's mind was the Burmese harp.
It looked like the one from an old movie shot long before Ryo was born.
Sha-la-lan.
Just a single strum.
That one note stole the attention of everyone in the dining hall.
"The royal capital has fallen. Into the hands of the prince and the Empire. The cries of the people cloud the skies of the kingdom. The people's anger runs through the land. Their hope…will give birth to a new king. His name—King Abel. He shall rise from a remote town. The adventurer king who will blow away the kingdom's dark clouds. He shall gather the people's tears, and rise against the invaders!"
The bard sang, speaking the lyrics.
His beautiful voice, the harp's tone, and the content of the song captivated the audience.
Except for two people.
"Abel, this is…"
"Yeah… it's about our country…"
Ryo checked, and Abel confirmed.
Naturally, Abel's face was beet red.
He was clearly embarrassed to be sung about.
The song progressed, moving into a battle scene where the invaders were driven back.
The audience seemed to already know the song.
Everyone but Ryo and Abel.
They listened, enraptured and excited.
It was clearly a rare sight.
"And with King Abel stands a lone magician. His magic dims the heavens, shatters the earth, and freezes the world—the great water magician. With a single blow, he scattered an army of a hundred thousand—no illusion, but truth. They praise him: Icefall. Or, they sing of him as the Silver Duke."
"Wooah!"
"Brilliant!"
"As expected of Wang A-Shi!"
"The finest bard of our age!"
Cheers erupted.
Von Debout's retainers were clapping with tears in their eyes.
With the lights dimmed, no one noticed—but two people had faces as red as beets.
The King and the Duke.
"That last part…it was you, wasn't it, Ryo…"
"W-Well, it only said 'a magician', so maybe it's someone else?"
Then, a voice from the audience rang out.
"The ending 'Song of Duke Rondo' really is the best!"
"King Abel and Duke Rondo. What a perfect king and retainer combo!"
The two turned an even deeper shade of red.
"They're calling it 'The Song of Duke Rondo'."
"I never imagined being sung about would be this embarrassing…"
Neither Abel nor Ryo were used to this kind of attention.
They clapped politely while looking down.
So they didn't notice.
The bard, having finished the song, was staring directly at them.
"That was amazing! Songs of the Kingdom of Knightley really lift your spirits! I feel fired up now!"
Nuan, who'd seemed down earlier, was now beaming.
Perhaps she was projecting the retaking of their country and their lord onto the song's tale.
"By the way, Abel, your name is the same as King Abel's in the song. Is that a common name in your homeland?"
"Ah, yeah, well, it's pretty common."
Abel replied to Wei Fon, cold sweat trickling down his back.
Maybe it wasn't necessary to hide it… but at the very least, that wasn't the time to make it public.
Because it was just too embarrassing.
"Isn't there some way to ban this song…?"
"Totally agree…"
If they ever did that, Abel and Ryo would surely go down in history—for the wrong reasons.
But luckily for the people, no such ban was ever issued…
-x-X-x-
The next day.
Ryo and Abel left the Ryusen Residence, saying they were going to speak with Captain Myun of the Public Vessel Department.
However, they were caught just outside the gate.
Someone had been waiting for them.
"Hello. You're Abel-san and Ryo-san, right? I'm Wang A-Shi, a bard."
At that moment, both froze.
But they couldn't just ignore him.
He already knew their names.
"Uh, yeah, I'm Abel."
"Ah, yes, I'm Ryo."
That was all they could manage—just their names.
And even then, it was clear they were both extremely suspicious in their behavior.
Their eyes darted nervously.
However, the bard Wang A-Shi seemed to interpret their reaction as wariness due to his sudden approach.
"My apologies for the suddenness. Actually, I saw you both in the dining hall last night when I was performing."
"I-I see."
"Abel-san clearly looks like a foreigner, and while Ryo-san's black hair is common in the Eastern countries, your robe isn't typical… at least, you don't look like someone from Darwei. I also heard you were adventurers, and I was hoping I might hear some interesting stories from your experiences. That's why I was waiting here."
Wang A-Shi explained politely.
Realizing he didn't know they were the prominent duke and king, the two relaxed just a bit.
And that made them start fumbling over their words.
"Uh, we haven't really been on any grand adventures…"
"Y-Yeah, just a normal, really normal life."
"Eat, sleep, repeat. Haha…"
Their eye contact was impeccable!
"Forgive me, but may I ask which country you're from?"
"Uh…"
That single question blew up everything.
As expected from a bard, a master of weaving words.
"Even if we said, you probably wouldn't know…"
"Y-Yeah, it's probably a country you've never heard of…"
"I'm a bard, so I do know quite a lot, actually. Not just about the Eastern countries, but also the Central and Western countries, even the Dark Continent."
Their defensive wall was effortlessly broken by Wang A-Shi's smiling words…
"From the Central Countries…"
"The Kingdom of Knightley…"
"What?!"
They gave up and answered.
Their answer seemed to catch Wang A-Shi completely off guard.
His eyes widened in shock, speechless.
"The Kingdom of Knightley… that song I sang yesterday was about the Kingdom of Knightley!"
"Y-You don't say."
"To have our homeland sung about in songs—how amazing."
Both Ryo and Abel could only mumble awkwardly at his words.
And then…
"Come to think of it, Abel-san, you have the same name as King Abel. Is that a common name over there?"
"Y-Yeah, very common…"
"How wonderful! This must be divine guidance from the god of song! Please, tell me your stories… no, allow me to follow you for a few days for a close-up interview…"
"That's a bit…"
Abel faltered before the enthusiastic Wang A-Shi.
But a bard who travels the world with just a harp and voice—he was clearly a persistent negotiator.
"I've heard you're involved in helping Count Matan, who's been detained. I may be a bard, but I do get called to perform at the Darwei imperial court. Darwei has great respect for the arts. I believe I might be able to help you in some way through that connection."
Hearing this, the two looked at each other.
Then, they stepped aside to discuss.
"What do you think, Abel?"
"If we're being honest, he'd be a really powerful information-gathering asset, right?"
"Absolutely. Today's plans are just to talk with Captain Myun at the Public Vessel Department and then hear from Captain Li Chu about the Censorate. Anything beyond that, if he can help, that would be great."
"True."
And so, Wang A-Shi was permitted to follow Ryo and Abel.
Public Vessel Department, near the harbor.
Wang A-Shi was allowed to tag along, but not to listen in on the conversation.
Naturally, they didn't have Captain Myun's permission for that.
The captain, though not strictly bound by law, intended to share sensitive information, so only Ryo and Abel were allowed into his office.
Wang A-Shi waited in the next room.
Under the promise that he'd only be told what could be safely shared afterward.
"Ah, you've come. Though I hear you brought an unusual guest with you?"
Captain Myun opened with that line.
"Yeah, a bard."
"His name is Wang A-Shi."
Abel and Ryo replied.
"So I heard. He's the most famous bard in Darwei. His 'Song of the Kingdom of Knightley' is said to be spreading across the Eastern countries. Other bards sing it too, but none can match the original."
"So he's that famous…"
"You brought him along without even knowing?"
Captain Myun chuckled, shaking his head.
"He sang that song at the Ryusen Residence last night. This morning, he caught us at the inn's exit, asking for adventure stories."
"He offered to help us with the Count Matan situation…"
"I see. Speaking of which, about that Count Matan. When I reported to His Majesty last night, I asked what he thought of the situation… and it seems His Majesty also found it strange."
"Oh ho."
Ryo and Abel were a bit surprised by Captain Myun's words.
Given that Count Matan had stolen a sword in the palace and attacked another official, they thought a death sentence was inevitable.
Perhaps only delayed due to the upcoming wedding of the sixth prince, Ryun.
But it seems the emperor also found the situation suspicious.
"His Majesty knows that Count Matan Von Debout is not at all… well, suited for combat. The fact that he managed to disarm an imperial guard and attack another perplexed him. Also, while Count Matan may be inflexible, His Majesty sees him as serious and not at all foolish. Based on that, he thinks something about this doesn't add up."
"I see."
"Do you think Von Debout-san might avoid a death sentence?"
Ryo asked hopefully.
But Captain Myun could only shake his head slightly.
"If there were proof he'd been manipulated somehow, maybe… but without it, who knows? Either way, if this was a plot to frame him, it's way too sloppy. There were better ways to do it."
"Exactly. If even the emperor suspects something, it'll be hard to bring down Von Debout-san, right?"
Ryo agreed with the captain's reasoning.
"So that means the goal wasn't to frame Lord Von Debout?"
"Hmm…was the real target Roche Ten-san? But he wasn't even injured…"
Both Abel and Ryo frowned in thought.
Not knowing the true aim left an unsettling feeling.
At least, the chance of Lord Von Debout being sentenced to death seemed to be diminishing…
As long as they could find evidence he was manipulated, which the Censorate's Secretary Shao had said was possible, there was hope.
Which is why they really needed to figure out the mastermind's real target…
Captain Myun slowly started piecing something together in his mind and spoke:
"In the aftermath of this incident, even if temporarily, both Count Bashu and Count Matan were removed from their roles."
"Lord Roche Ten was the advisor for setting up the Sixth Prince's new residence. Count Matan was the host for Princess Shio Fen…"
"Someone new might be taking their places… to interfere with the ceremony?"
Abel confirmed their roles, and Ryo followed with a flash of insight.
"Entirely possible!"
Captain Myun nodded deeply.
Then, as if recalling something.
"Count Bashu's replacement hasn't been named. But Count Matan's was decided yesterday. Since a detailed investigation will be necessary, given the scale of the incident. His replacement is Count Mezo. Part of the Fourth Prince's faction."
"Do you think he might try something?"
"I don't know. But the wedding ceremony is tomorrow. After that, the Ministry of Rites will proceed solemnly according to tradition, and outside interference will be nearly impossible. If anything is going to happen, it'll be today…"
"What's happening today?"
"Hmm…"
Captain Myun couldn't answer Abel's question.
Even he didn't know every detail.
Just then…
"I heard the Princess's schedule was changed for today."
Said a new voice. It was Captain La Wu of the Tenth Ship.
"Changed?"
"Yes. Count Mezo forced the decision. Apparently, there will be a flower-viewing at the Plum Grove Garden."
"The Plum Grove Garden is way too open. The public can easily enter. It's extremely difficult to ensure the safety of royalty there."
"He said it's to allow the people to see her as well."
Ryo and Abel listened quietly to the exchange.
But both of their expressions were tense.
They knew Princess Shio Fen had been attacked multiple times already.
They stood up simultaneously.
"For now, let's head to this Plum Grove Garden."
Abel declared, and Ryo nodded. The two left the room.
They quickly reunited with bard Wang A-Shi in the adjacent room.
"Wang A-Shi, do you know the Plum Grove Garden?"
"Yes, of course. Did something happen?"
"We're not sure. But would you like to come on an adventure with us?"
"I'd love to!"
Ryo invited, and Wang A-Shi gladly accepted.
The three of them ran toward the Plum Grove Garden.

The Plum Grove Garden, located near the Imperial Palace, is a famous spot for viewing plum blossoms.
Normally, it's a public park open for leisure to all citizens of the Imperial Capital, but today, access was restricted.
That said, there were no fences or barriers in the first place, and the grounds are vast, making it impossible to completely restrict entry.
This much was understood by those around Princess Shio Fen.
"This place is far too open."
"Indeed. According to Count Matan's original plan, the flower viewing was supposed to be held inside the palace."
The princess's guard captain Bizis said, pointing out the difficulty of protecting her. The attendant, Mifa, also expressed suspicion over the sudden change in plans.
"It can't be helped. The event coordinator for the princess decides such things. From tomorrow's wedding ceremony onward, everything will follow the traditional rites, so there won't be any last-minute changes like this again."
Princess Shio Fen herself replied, calmly accepting the situation.
Her composure was striking for someone just seventeen years old, but it came from a wealth of experience.
Most of it, unfortunately, painful… rather than pleasant.
She had survived numerous assassination attempts—ten, twenty, maybe more.
And that was back in her homeland.
In a great empire like Darwei, rife with imperial succession struggles, she expected even greater trials.
"Now then, both of you—let the banquet begin."
Although it was called 'flower viewing', they didn't actually enter the plum grove to admire the blossoms directly.
Instead, they sat in elegantly arranged seats and, with noble ladies of the Shitaifu class who were granted entry to this event, sipped tea and enjoyed sweets.
Groups of four noblewomen took turns sitting before the princess, engaging in conversation for about ten minutes each.
This cycle was repeated six times.
Such was the flower viewing.
The newly appointed event coordinator for the princess, Count Mezo, stood off to the side of the gathering along with other senior officials.
The women were the main focus of this flower viewing.
However, Count Mezo was not just standing idly.
He moved behind the scenes and whispered to one of his subordinates.
"What about the operatives?"
"They are all in position."
"Good. Once the signal is given, cause confusion and swiftly administer the poison to the princess."
"Understood."
But just then… something unexpected happened out front.
Sha-la-ran.
The sound of a harp echoed.
Just a single stroke.
That alone captured the attention of every guest, all eyes fixed on a single man.
One woman among them cried out.
"Wang A-Shi-sama!"
The bard Wang A-Shi was well known even among the Shitaifu class.
His year of performances across Darwei, particularly in the imperial capital Hanlin, had made his name known.
He smiled warmly at the woman who had called to him.
Even without singing a note, his charming smile alone captivated the hearts of the women.
That, too, was an essential trait for a bard.
"It must be fate that we meet here today. If I may, I would love for you to hear one of my songs…"
Wang A-Shi bowed gracefully toward Princess Shio Fen as he spoke.
Receiving this, the princess nodded elegantly.
"Thank you. This time, I have prepared something special—my song will be accompanied by a sword dance. Please, enjoy."
As Wang A-Shi said this, two men stepped forward.
One wore a black cloak and carried a sword on his back—a swordsman.
The other wore white robes and looked like a magician.
"Ah, Abel-sensei?"
"Ryo-dono?"
Mifa and Captain Bizis, who stood behind the princess, involuntarily spoke out.
"To appear with Wang A-Shi, the most celebrated bard of the moment… those two never cease to amaze."
Princess Shio Fen murmured with a smile, her voice too soft to be heard by the women around her.
"The royal capital has fallen. Into the hands of the prince and the Empire. The cries of the people cloud the skies of the kingdom. The people's anger runs through the land. Their hope…will give birth to a new king. His name—King Abel. He shall rise from a frontier town. The adventurer king who will blow away the kingdom's dark clouds. He shall gather the people's tears, and rise against the invaders!"
As Wang A-Shi began to sing, Abel drew his glowing red magic sword and began his dance.
His movements were slow yet graceful…
A sword form he practiced daily, though it seemed exotic to the people of Darwei.
As the song progressed to the theme of battle, it was Ryo's turn.
Kneeling a short distance away, he conjured ice dolls.
These glided across the
Though their limbs didn't move, they were shaped with flair—some like sword-wielding warriors, others like staff-bearing magicians—each bearing Ryo's distinctive touch.
One after another, they slid across the ice floor and were cut down.
The audience, enchanted by the performance and the song, watched in awe.
But a few suddenly snapped back to reality.
Count Mezo and those around him.
"W-what are you doing?! Give the signal!"
"Yes, sir!"
With that, a group of citizens watching the flower viewing from afar sprang into action.
They clashed with the guards stationed around the perimeter.
As expected, the skirmish created gaps in the defense… some intruders broke through.
"
Using his
Clang! Clunk! Bam! Thud…!
The attackers collided with the ice walls.
Those who had broken through the guards were all suspicious and dangerous types.
The noise from hitting the walls was so loud, it frightened the women inside the ice barrier.
"It's alright. These ice walls are absolutely impenetrable."
Princess Shio Fen said with a confident smile.
Her assurance calmed the terrified women.
"Wang A-Shi, please continue."
Ryo said in a soft voice.
With a nod, Wang A-Shi resumed singing.
His song gradually wiped away the last of the women's fears…
"And with King Abel stands a lone magician. His magic that dims the heavens, shatters the earth, and freezes the world—the great water magic. With a single spell, he crushed an army of a hundred thousand—this is no fantasy. People sing his praises as 'The Icefall' or the 'Silver Duke'."
As Wang A-Shi finished singing the final part about Duke Rondo.
There was a brief silence, then the area erupted with applause and shrieks of admiration.
"*Kyaaaaaah! Wang A-Shi-sama!"
"That was amazing! Truly amazing!"
"Oh, how I wish I could meet King Abel and Duke Rondo…"
At that last comment, two particular people subtly averted their gazes, though no one noticed.
By then, the guards had regained control. The attackers who had been stopped by the ice walls were removed.
Reserve guards stationed outside the Plum Grove Garden had arrived to reinforce the defense.
The guard captain muttered that they should have done this from the beginning… but apparently, some superior had insisted on holding them in reserve.
"Wang A-Shi-dono, and your companions— your performance and sword dance were splendid."
Princess Shio Fen offered high praise, to which Wang A-Shi, Abel, and Ryo bowed respectfully.
Captain Bizis quickly stepped forward and handed Wang A-Shi a pouch filled with money.
Wang A-Shi bowed even more deeply.
"Count Mezo!"
"Y-yes, Princess!"
At the princess's call, Count Mezo scrambled forward and bowed.
"It seems there was an incident outside. Has it been resolved?"
"Yes…"
"Then let us all return to the palace. I would love to serve everyone tea. And discuss that marvelous performance."
"Understood. Princess!"
The noblewomen nodded happily at the princess's suggestion.
They were not ordinary women, but the wives of the Shitaifu class—the aristocracy of Darwei.
Among their husbands were men of the same rank as Count Mezo.
It would be one thing if they had been caught in a riot disguised as an accident, but it would be difficult to suppress their actions purely on Count Mezo's authority.
His face pale, Count Mezo had no choice but to make arrangements for their return.
He didn't even want to imagine what fate awaited him for this failure…
Once Princess Shio Fen and the noblewomen were safely inside the palace, Ryo, Abel, and Wang A-Shi finally relaxed.
"That went well."
"I didn't think a riot would actually break out."
"Oh, what a magnificent story I've acquired! Thank you!"
Ryo and Abel were relieved they had averted disaster. Wang A-Shi was thrilled to gain yet another treasure for his bardic tales.
"Abel, your sword dance was truly magnificent! Combined with that glowing red magic sword, it was absolutely beautiful!"
"I-it wasn't that big of a deal…"
Abel blushed under Wang A-Shi's praise.
Clearly embarrassed but pleased nonetheless.
"And Ryo, your magic was incredible too! Those ice dolls? Beautifully crafted! And the ice wall—so sturdy!"
"Oh, it's nothing special…"
Ryo also blushed at the compliment.
Clearly, both Ryo and Abel were the type who thrived on praise.
-x-X-x-
Ryo, Abel, and Wang A-Shi returned to Ryusen Residence.
It was about the time Captain Li Chu of the White Flame Guard was expected to arrive with a report from the Censorate.
Just as the three arrived, Captain Li Chu of the White Flame Guard showed up.
Ryo, Abel, and Captain Li Chu entered the room that Ryo and Abel had been borrowing.
It had been agreed that Ryo and Abel would take responsibility for relaying the information to Wei Fon and the others.
Naturally, Wang A-Shi was not allowed to enter.
However, he was happily holed up in a room provided by Ryusen Residence, saying he wanted to turn the experience he'd just had at Plum Grove Garden into a song.
Perhaps songs were overflowing in his mind…
"To get straight to the point, according to Secretary Shao's judgment, there is no doubt that Count Matan was being manipulated."
"Alright."
As Captain Li Chu said this, Ryo made a small fist-pump.
It was a sign that they'd secured the cooperation of the lead investigator… proof enough for Ryo to feel confident.
"As for evidence, a minute trace of Boranta poison was found on the inside of his clothes."
"That's the one used for mind control, right?"
Abel nodded in response to the report.
The investigation seemed to be heading in a favorable direction.
"Also, it appears that Count Matan has no memory of the moment he grabbed the sword and attacked. That's a known symptom when Boranta poison is used, so it's understandable. As for the elite guard from whom the sword was taken…"
At this, Captain Li Chu hesitated.
Both Ryo and Abel furrowed their brows.
It seemed something unpleasant was coming.
"Last night, he was found hanged in his cell—an apparent suicide."
"What…"
"You're kidding…"
Both Ryo and Abel shook their heads slightly at the report.
Ryo asked for confirmation.
"Was it… really a suicide? Could it have been a disguised murder…?"
A classic tactic!
Silencing witnesses!
"Honestly, it's unclear. There was no suspicious evidence to indicate foul play, but during the questioning yesterday, that soldier was apparently quite cooperative. That's why it seems strange that he would kill himself now."
"I see. What did he say in the questioning yesterday?"
"Right before Count Matan seized the sword, the soldier said he suddenly lost all strength in his limbs. He collapsed onto the floor, and Count Matan took the sword from there."
"Hmm."
Ryo made a troubled face at Captain Li Chu's explanation.
Logically, it sounded like the soldier had been paralyzed with some kind of numbing agent or poison.
But looking at everything so far…
"Everything surrounding Count Matan seems deliberately designed to be discovered later."
Abel stated this bluntly.
In other words, the goal wasn't to pin the blame on Count Matan and remove him permanently—it was to temporarily remove him from the public stage, particularly from involvement in Prince Ryun's marriage.
"So, it's highly likely the target was the princess we met today."
"Yeah, that's how I see it."
Ryo confirmed, and Abel nodded.
"Um…when you say harm the princess…?"
It seemed Captain Li Chu hadn't heard what had happened earlier, so the two filled him in.
"I see…it's certainly very plausible that she was the target."
Captain Li Chu nodded.
"But…the core problem still remains."
"What's the core problem?"
Abel tilted his head, and Ryo asked.
"Why is Princess Shio Fen being targeted?"
"Ah, true. This may sound harsh, but even if the princess died, there wouldn't really be any issue within Darwei, right? Prince Ryun might mourn her, but that would be the extent of it, wouldn't it?"
Though Abel winced at Ryo's cold remark, he nodded.
Because it made sense.
Captain Li Chu continued.
"I thought the same. But then I remembered Lord Bashu…and something occurred to me."
Count Bashu refers to Roche Ten.
He had been attacked by Count Matan Von Debout in this incident…
"Count Bashu is the construction advisor for Prince Ryun's new residence."
"Ah yes, I heard that."
"But actually, that's rather strange."
"What do you mean?"
Abel asked.
Ryo also tilted his head.
"Usually, when a prince takes a formal consort, he is granted a detached residence within the Imperial Palace. It's a customary rite of passage—a sort of graduation from living in a room in the palace to being recognized as independent. Later, if he achieves merits and is elevated to an Imperial Prince, he's granted a large mansion known as a Royal Residence outside the imperial palace. For example, Prince Bin, the Fourth Prince, already has the Bin Royal Residence."
"I see."
"But in this case, Lord Bashu is overseeing the construction of not a detached palace within the Imperial Palace, but a grand estate outside the palace."
"What…?!"
Ryo was surprised by Captain Li Chu's explanation.
A residence outside the palace would imply…that Prince Ryun was going to be promoted to Imperial Prince.
"Are there conditions for a prince to be elevated to an imperial prince?"
"The only requirement…is to have a formal consort. The final decision is made by His Majesty."
Captain Li Chu answered Abel's question clearly after thinking briefly.
"If he becomes an imperial prince, he'll be involved in the imperial succession struggle…right?"
"Yes, exactly."
Captain Li Chu nodded at Ryo's question.
So, if Princess Shio Fen were to die before the wedding…
"Prince Ryun wouldn't be able to become an imperial prince."
"Eventually, he would probably marry a new consort…but not right away."
Captain Li Chu again nodded at Abel's comment.
"Are we starting to see the big picture?"
"I think so."
Both Abel and Ryo were finally beginning to understand the reason behind the attack on Princess Shio Fen.
"The most direct way to confirm it would be to ask His Majesty himself. Whether he intends to elevate Prince Ryun to imperial prince."
"True…but that's hardly realistic. Even if someone like Captain Myun asked, I doubt he'd get an answer."
"Then…"
"Yeah, we'll have to ask the construction advisor."
"Count Bashu…Roche Ten, right?"
Abel and Ryo exchanged glances and nodded in unison.
"Excuse me, we're going to pay a visit to Roche Ten's inn."
Count Bashu, Roche Ten, was staying at the 'Moonlight Banquet Pavilion' facing the Holy Emperor's Plaza.
Last time, they had sneaked in from the back, but there was no need for that now.
They properly entered through the front, announced their names, and were shown in.
"Ah, hello to you both. I just finished my questioning by the Censorate."
Roche Ten greeted them with a smile.
Compared to yesterday, when he had been attacked, his expression was entirely different.
"Glad to see you've recovered."
"Seems like you're ready to return to work."
"Yes. I plan to return starting tomorrow. Though honestly, everything seems to be going smoothly without me."
Abel and Ryo expressed their relief at his recovery, and Roche Ten seemed eager to return to his duties.
Once the conversation turned to Roche Ten's worksite, the two made their move.
"Actually, just earlier, Princess Shio Fen was attacked."
"What?!"
Apparently, the events at Plum Grove Garden had not yet reached his ears, and Roche Ten was shocked.
So Ryo gave a quick summary of what had happened.
"Well… Count Mezo… I don't want to speak ill of others, but…"
From those few words, it was clear that Roche Ten didn't think highly of Count Mezo.
"So, we've come up with a theory."
"A theory?"
Roche Ten tilted his head at Ryo's words.
"The series of attacks… including those back in the Bosuntar Kingdom—on Princess Shio Fen were likely aimed at sabotaging Prince Ryun's marriage."
"Hmm?"
"If Prince Ryun cannot hold a formal wedding, he cannot become an imperial prince."
"Hm? As far as I know, there has been no official talk of Prince Ryun being elevated to imperial prince."
"Yes. But we heard that his new residence is being built outside the palace grounds."
When Ryo said this, Roche Ten's eyes widened.
"I'm surprised you know that."
"That's why we suspect he may be up for elevation…"
"Ah, I see…"
Roche Ten nodded with a wry smile.
"Certainly, if you only heard that part, I can understand why it might be misunderstood."
"Misunderstood?"
Roche Ten's words caused both Ryo and Abel to tilt their heads in confusion.
"Indeed, the new residence is being constructed outside the imperial palace by His Majesty's order. However, it is not particularly large."
"Not large enough to be considered a royal residence?"
"Exactly. May I ask… how much do you two know about the royal residences that imperial princes establish?"
"Hardly anything."
"Yes, we really know nothing."
Roche Ten gave a nod and began his explanation.
"A royal residence is a small, independent domain established by an imperial prince."
"An independent domain?"
"It's almost like a castle. It's not merely a place to live. Within its grounds, soldiers are trained, retainers and talented individuals are supported, and it serves as a place for the prince to learn how to command people and govern land. For that reason, a royal residence is typically vast. By the way, the inn you two are staying at is called the Ryusen Residence, correct?"
"Yes."
"That place used to be part of the royal residence…established by an imperial prince during the reign of the emperor three generations ago."
"That was just part of it…?"
"It's said to have been five to ten times larger."
The two were left speechless by Roche Ten's words.
Clearly, what he described was far beyond the scale of a mere 'residence.'
"The property I'm in charge of building is merely a residence. True, it's quite spacious compared to a typical detached residence built after welcoming a legal wife in the palace, but it is by no means large enough to be called a royal residence."
At this point, Roche Ten sipped his tea.
Then, he adjusted his expression slightly and continued.
"That concludes the explanation I'd normally give to the general public."
"The general public?"
Abel asked.
"However, I will share a bit more with you two. Adjacent to Prince Ryun's residence are several empty houses and vacant lots. If all of those were cleared and integrated with the main residence, it would be large enough to be called a royal residence."
"What…?"
Ryo was stunned by Roche Ten's additional information.
"And who decided to build Prince Ryun's residence in that location…?"
"As I mentioned earlier, it was, of course, His Majesty the Emperor."
Roche Ten answered firmly to Abel's question.
It might mean that the emperor already has plans to eventually elevate Prince Ryun to the rank of imperial prince.
Which in turn would mean…he's going to be thrust deeper into the vortex of political intrigue.
"Her Highness the Princess has truly married into a difficult situation…"
Ryo's quiet murmur reached no one's ears.
That night.
At the Bin Royal Residence, residence of the Fourth Prince.
"Fool!"
"My deepest apologies…"
A man in his early twenties roared in anger.
The Count Mezo knelt on both knees, bowing in apology.
"Enough! Get out!"
Spitting out the words, the young man dismissed Mezo, who quickly left the room as if fleeing.
The young man was the master of the royal residence.
In other words, Prince Bin, the Fourth Imperial Prince himself.
His features could be described as handsome, though he appeared somewhat high-strung.
With a scowl on his face, he paced the room.
"Lin Sui, I followed your plan, and look where it got us!"
"Yes…I am ashamed of my inadequacy."
Lin Sui bowed deeply in apology under Prince Bin's reproachful words.
However, had anyone seen Lin Sui's expression beneath his bowed head, they would have been shocked.
Because he was smiling.
Lin Sui was regarded as Prince Bin's right-hand man.
Prince Bin himself saw him that way.
Though he scolded him harshly, it was, in a way, a sign of dependency.
A form of trust.
But, upon seeing Lin Sui's smile…
"So, do you have another plan? At this rate, Ryun will be elevated to Imperial Prince."
"The wedding is tomorrow, so it can no longer be stopped. Once Princess Shio Fen becomes the legal consort, even if she dies afterward, it won't matter. The fact that he married a legitimate princess will be established, and the conditions for him to become an imperial prince will be met."
"That's why I'm asking! What's the next plan?"
"Unless we directly eliminate Lord Ryun, I see no other way to stop it."
"Wha…what did you say…?"
Prince Bin was speechless at Lin Sui's proposal.
Of course, it wasn't due to any brotherly affection over the thought of killing his sibling.
Both Prince Bin and Prince Ryun were sons of the current emperor, though by different mothers.
Their ages were relatively close, but they didn't grow up particularly close.
His shock came from the weight of the suggestion— 'killing a fellow prince'.
Naturally, if it were discovered, the punishment would be death.
Furthermore, the Second and Third Princes were constantly watching Prince Bin's movements.
Just as Prince Bin was watching theirs.
Could he really move to kill another prince without being found out…?
"I do have a plan."
Lin Sui spoke in a calm voice.
That calmness helped ease Prince Bin's heightened emotions.
"Understood. Proceed with the plan."
That was all Prince Bin said.
He didn't ask for details.
He didn't question it.
Part of it was trust. But also…he knew that sometimes, it was better not to know.
Once again, Lin Sui bowed deeply. Out of Prince Bin's line of sight, he wore a malevolent, sinister smile. No one saw it.
That same night.
In Princess Shio Fen's temporary residence within the imperial palace.
The formal schedule had finally ended, and three people sat drinking tea.
Princess Shio Fen, her attendant Mifa, and the captain of her guards, Bizis.
The wedding ceremony would be held the next day, followed by numerous rituals.
Eventually, there would be a formal presentation to the citizens of the capital—a grueling schedule.
"Tightly packed schedules are nothing new."
Princess Shio Fen said with a laugh.
From a young age, it had been normal for her, as a princess, to carry out such routines.
So this wasn't particularly difficult for her.
The only difference this time was—she'd had multiple attempts on her life.
"Still, I was surprised at the Plum Grove Garden."
When Princess Shio Fen said that, Mifa and Bizis nodded.
"To think, Abel-sensei and Ryo-sama would show up!"
"Th-That's what surprised you?"
"Not the attackers?"
Mifa and Bizis were shocked by Princess Shio Fen's words.
"Assassination attempts are routine, aren't they? What was more surprising was those two showing up."
Princess Shio Fen said it casually.
"Well…it certainly was surprising."
"I forgot to ask for their contact information."
Mifa agreed, and Bizis regretted the oversight.
"In that situation, it couldn't be helped. Still, I'm glad to know they're in the capital. I hope they come visit the residence once things settle down."
"But it's a prince's residence. It might not be easy to visit…"
"They might be stopped at the gate…"
Mifa and Bizis gave more practical responses to Princess Shio Fen's hopeful wish.
"But if it's those two, don't you think they might just force their way in?"
"That would be its own problem…"
Princess Shio Fen laughed, and Mifa gave a small shake of her head.
Just then, a voice came from outside the door.
"Your Highness, Prince Ryun has arrived."
"What?"
Even Princess Shio Fen let out a surprised voice.
As far as she knew, it was not customary in Darwei for a groom to visit his bride the night before the wedding.
In some countries, it was even considered taboo.
Even so, she couldn't refuse.
"Let him in."
"Princess, I apologize for visiting at such a late hour."
"No, Your Highness, it's quite all right."
As the two exchanged greetings, the attendant Mifa and the princess's guard captain Bizis quietly exited the room.
Inside remained only the Sixth Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen.
"It's late, so I'll be brief. There's something I have to tell you before tomorrow's wedding."
"Yes."
Prince Ryun took a deep breath. Then exhaled.
He looked directly at Princess Shio Fen.
His expression was astonishingly composed.
Honestly, the image she had of Prince Ryun was neither foolish nor dull, but rather indecisive and not very proactive.
That impression, of course, had been built from hearsay.
Although they had met before, their conversations were brief and superficial.
In truth, this was the first time they had ever truly spoken…
But…
Just from seeing his composed expression, Princess Shio Fen revised her understanding.
The image of the prince she had been given was wrong.
Most likely, he had been feigning incompetence to avoid being drawn into the succession struggle…
Prince Ryun slowly—but clearly—spoke.
"I will advance to the rank of Imperial Prince, and aim for Crown Prince, and eventually the throne."
Princess Shio Fen was surprised for only a moment.
"I understand."
She bowed respectfully.
"The other day, at the Imperial Mausoleum, I declared my intentions to the past emperors. I imagine you will have to endure many hardships."
"Please don't concern yourself. I will support you, Your Highness."
With a determined Prince Ryun and a smiling Princess Shio Fen giving her full support.
Though they were not yet married, it was possible that in that moment, their hearts became truly united…
That same night, in the dining hall of 'Ryusen Residence'.
A new ballad titled 'The Uprising at Plum Grove Garden' was being sung by the bard Wang A-Shi.
This wasn't a traditional song like those of the 'Kingdom of Knightley', but more of a topical piece—a song crafted from recent events.
Even so, most of the audience had heard that something had happened at Plum Grove Garden.
However, no one knew the actual details.
That's why everyone was listening with rapt attention.
Genuinely intrigued.
Well, everyone except for two individuals.
"Abel, I mean…this is so incredibly embarrassing."
"Ryo, I couldn't agree more."
In 'The Uprising at Plum Grove Garden', both Ryo and Abel were mentioned by name.
That, of course, added to the song's realism…which made sense, but still…
They were portrayed as having performed heroic deeds.
But neither of them was used to being sung about in ballads.
"Maybe we should issue a ban on this song too…"
"Yes, we'll consider that."
The duke plants the idea, and the king goes along with it.
Of course, their little scheme won't succeed…
The next morning.
Ryo suddenly looked up, as if he'd noticed something.
"What is it?"
"It seems about fifty familiar people have gathered outside."
"Huh?"
Ryo's response made no sense to Abel.
Familiar, he said—but from this angle, they couldn't even see the inn's entrance.
And where would fifty acquaintances even come from?
It's not like they had that many contacts in the imperial capital.
And they came 'this' early in the morning?
"They might not be here for us, you know."
"True."
Ryo nodded at Abel's point.
So the two of them took their time getting ready.
Today, the wedding ceremony of the Sixth Prince Ryun and Princess Shio Fen would be held at the imperial palace.
With Count Bashu Roche Ten attending the court, there would be limited places for the two to gather information.
"Abel, shall we head toward Holy Emperor Plaza and beat up some shady characters to make them talk?"
"Ryo, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about."
Ryo, in the style of an old-school violent detective drama, had made the suggestion, while Abel shook his head in confusion.
Surely, guards in the Kingdom of Knightley don't resort to violence to get suspects to confess.
"That's…truly admirable."
Ryo said with a satisfied nod.
For some reason, acting smug.
Then, the two stepped outside through the gate.
There they saw…
A group clad in white clothing with red trim.
The contrast between white and red was strikingly beautiful.
Everyone had their hair neatly tied up and secured with small crowns atop their heads.
The combination of ceremonial attire, styled hair, and those little crowns was, as always, exquisitely well-balanced.
"The White Flame Army?"
Abel murmured.
Ryo, who had identified them with his
"Good morning, Captain Li Chu."
Ryo greeted first.
"Good morning, Duke Rondo."
Captain Li Chu placed both hands over his chest and bowed his head.
It was the formal style of greeting in Darwei.
Looking around, Abel saw that not just Captain Li Chu, but all fifty members of the White Flame Army performed the same gesture.
Captain Li Chu raised his head and spoke clearly.
"Your Grace, Duke Rondo—His Majesty the Emperor wishes to meet you. We have been sent to escort you."
