Chapter 1 - Prologue: “Villains are not born, but created.”

The crimson lifeblood seeped from the slits of the battered black iron helmet like a morbid crimson fountain, warm rivulets tracing ghastly vermilion trails down the battle-scarred metal visage. Each drip landed with a sickly patter on the hilt of the sword buried deep into the hulking armored figure's chest, embedding itself in the engraved hilt with a mocking finality. A gurgling, wet rasp, akin to the death rattle of a drowned man, escaped from behind that grim faceplate as the dying villain addressed their opponent through bloodstained lips.

"You did it, hero. You've won this bitter struggle at last, though at what cost?" Another crimson glob oozed forth from the depths of the helmet, splattering on the victor's boots like a perverse baptism. "Through fire and blood, steel and sorcery, you've taken everything from me. My lands, razed. My armies, slaughtered. My very life's breath, forfeit. All that remains is this withered, broken husk kneeling before you."

The fallen villain coughed, a violent spasm that sent flecks of blood speckling their dented breastplate like a macabre bloom. "So take your hollow victory then, oh noble hero. Raise your tattered banner high and bask in your illusory glory. For tomorrow..." Another wet cough racked the villain's body, spraying more crimson droplets. "A new evil stirs, born of your actions this day, and the realms shall have dire need of your indomitable spirit once more to combat the monster you've created." The final words dripped with bitter mockery, as if daring the so-called hero to see the truth in the condemnation of their supposedly just cause. Innocent lives laid to waste, all in the name of this righteous crusade.

The hero's lip curled in a contemptuous sneer as they glared with cold disdain at the crumpled, defeated form of their despised foe. "Villain, your reign of madness and tyranny is over. We have triumphed, and your evil stain will no longer taint these lands, purged by the blessed flames of justice."

A gurgling, burbling laughter, thick with the rattle of fluid-filled lungs, issued forth from the shadowy confines of that grim helm. With each wheezing giggle, fresh spurts of blood were thrown out in a crimson mist to join the growing puddle. "So certain of your inherent goodness," the fallen tyrant murmured through the bubbling chuckle, each word stretched taut over the razor's edge of mocking disdain. "Oh, to be so blissfully naive."

The vengeful laughter swelled, shaking the battered armor with its mocking intensity until it seemed the very earth trembled at the scathing judgment. "You foolish, blinkered child! Don't you see?" Another glob of blood and spittle arced through the air to splash nearby, hissing as it struck the scorched earth. "For all your self-righteous posturing and honeyed words of justice, you've become the very thing you swore to defeat on this bloodsoaked field."

Raising a trembling gauntlet with the last dregs of fading strength, the dying warlord pointed an accusing finger, its ebon tip leaving a crimson trail through the air. "Scan the battlefield, oh pure-hearted 'hero'. Behold the swaths of innocent blood spilled by your hand in the name of your falsely righteous crusade. You're no better than I, and arguably far worse for cloaking your atrocities in shining lies."

The cruel laughter erupted again, a harsh staccato amid gurgling gasps for air that sprayed more scarlet droplets with each breath. "When the next tyrant rises from the ashes you've sown, they'll need only follow the path of broken bodies and burned homes YOU have left in your wake to find the way to inflict their dark justice. You've written your name amongst history's monsters this day with every life you've taken. Who are you to judge me, hero?"

"Give up, villain, your de-" the hero began, a sneer of contemptuous victory twisting their features, only for the expression to curdle into an irritated grimace as the fallen warlord interrupted with a derisive bark of laughter.

"Defeated!?" The word exploded from the shadowy depths of that ebon helm like a thunderclap, reverberating with scathing mockery. "My armies have been routed and scattered to the winds, true, their battered remnants left to lick their wounds! My most trusted advisor and confidant has indeed been slain by your treacherous hand!"

With each biting accusation, the villain's gravelly voice swelled in stentorian intensity, as if drawing fortifying rage and scathing vitriol from some infernal well of wrath. Rivulets of blood cascaded from the slitted eye-holes of the helmet in a crimson deluge, sheeting down the battered and dented breastplate in macabre streams.

"My lands now burn at your whim, choked beneath the pyre of your self-proclaimed 'justice'!" Blazing crimson spheres flared within the dark recesses of that dread visor as the dying tyrant raged, lips peeling back in a furious snarl. "My people left to suffer amidst the choking ash and smoke as the fruits of their labors are devoured by your righteous flames!"

One gauntleted arm swept out in a broad, condemning arc towards the balcony, inviting the hero's gaze outwards. "Behold the true nature of your vaunted heroism laid bare! A vision torn straight from the blackest pits of the nine hells themselves, an orchestra of agony and ruin that serenades your ill-gotten 'triumph' with the screams of the innocent!"

Even from this lofty vantage in the throne room, the deafening cacophony of the burning city roared up like the winds of the apocalypse - the anguished screams of the dying, the crackling conflagration consuming all in its path, the clashing of blades and thunderous collapses as more structures succumbed to the insatiable flames. All united in damning acclamation of the hero's Pyrrhic victory over virtue itself.

"So go ahead, finish your noble work!" The villain's mocking bravado carried clearly over the diminishing cries far below, a bass rumble amidst the din. "Put your blade to this black heart you so despise and drink deep of the cup of your 'heroic' conquest, you who have become the very monster you sought to slay!"

For a moment, the violet flicker of some discharged arcane force pulsed around the crumpled form of the tyrant, casting their battered visage in an eldritch violet glow. Like a miniature thunderhead, the ominous radiance flickered and crackled with portentous energy for but a handful of breaths...before winking out once more into the bloody gloom, as abruptly as it had manifested.

"Everything is lost." The words dripped from the shadowed visor like clotted blood from a mortal wound, heavy with despair and defeat.

Then the voice changed.

"WE DID NOT WISH TO BE A PART OF YOUR EMPIRE, 'HERO'!" It boomed forth, the eldritch thunderous baritone shaking the very foundations with its unholy timbre. "WE WISHED ONLY TO BE LEFT IN PEACE TO TEND TO OUR LANDS AND LIVE OUR SIMPLE WAYS!"

The violet energies crackled back into scintillating existence, licking hungrily at the air as they wreathed the dying figure in ethereal violet flames. "WE HAD NO ARMIES FOR WAR TO SPEAK OF, NO WARMACHINES TO FUEL YOUR BLOODLUST AND SLAKE YOUR HUNGER FOR CONQUEST! WE POSED NO THREAT TO YOU OR YOUR VAUNTED KINGDOMS, HARBORED NO GRAND AMBITIONS TO SPUR YOUR ZEALOUS, BRUTAL CAMPAIGNING AGAINST US!"

Doubled over, the villain's body convulsed violently as if wracked by a profane spirit's possession. When it finally reared back with a bestial roar of anguish, the malefic voice thundered with both righteous spite and piteous anguish:

"WHY!? ANSWER ME, CHAMPION OF SO-CALLED 'RIGHTEOUSNESS' - WHY DID YOU BRING THIS WAKING NIGHTMARE OF FIRE AND BLOODSHED TO OUR DOORSTEP!? WE ASKED FOR NONE OF THIS, SOUGHT NO QUARREL OR CONFLICT, YET YOU HAVE BURNED OUR HOMES TO CINDERS, SLAUGHTERED OUR LOVED ONES WITHOUT MERCY, DESTROYED OUR ENTIRE CIVILIZATION AND CULTURE ON THE PYRE OF YOUR 'HEROIC' HUBRIS AND SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS!"

The violet flames swirled higher in a vortex of ethereal energies, threatening to consume the entire throne room in eldritch inferno as dread whispers chanted in languages long dead. "LOOK UPON YOUR 'GLORIOUS' DEED WITH EYES FINALLY OPENED TO TRUTH, OH CONQUERING HERO! BEHOLD THE RUINATION AND HORROR YOU'VE WROUGHT IN THE NAME OF...OF WHAT!? WHAT TWISTED DOGMA COULD POSSIBLY JUSTIFY THESE ATROCITIES!?"

The searing violet flare erupted like a miniature sun, its blinding energies throwing the hero backwards to collide hard against the marbled walls of the grand royal hall, the wind knocked from their lungs. When their sight finally cleared from the searing afterimages, the villain's true visage was laid bare in all its dread majesty.

No mere warlord or petty tyrant was this, but a once-mighty king now slumped in his dark oak throne, his life's blood leaking from the holy blade still impaled through his chest. Yet as the hero watched, stunned into immobility, the fallen monarch stirred with a guttural groan of effort. With agonizing slowness aided by some unseen force, he rose to his full towering height, a crimson river cascading unchecked from the grievous wound.

Dark, eldritch runes flared to malevolent life along the ritualistic plates of his armor, pulsing in a sickly purple radiance. Each rune marked his dread sovereignty's mastery over realms of power and knowledge no mortal was ever meant to tread, let alone wield. Energies maniled in realms far beyond the material coalesced around the armored king like a shroud of pure potential darkness.

As the once-noble ruler stood defiant before the shocked hero, a ritual circle began inscribing itself in the rapidly pooling blood at his feet through sheer force of will. Geometric shapes and profane glyphs twisted into gruesome patterns, drinking deep of the monarch's spilled royal essence to power their unholy workings.

The very air thrummed with gathering arcane potential, a palpable darkness given form through blasphemous rites and sorceries antediluvian. The king's booming voice echoed like a vengeful deity's throughout the throne room as he began to invoke dread rites long forbidden: "Behold the true price of your 'heroism'..."

"You arrogant child!" The king's voice thundered with indignant fury. "Your feeble mortal mind could never hope to comprehend the metaphysical depths and profound cosmic truths you've so foolishly plumbed this day in your arrogance."

With an ominous creak of tortured adamantine, the monarch's gauntleted fist clenched tight, trembling with barely restrained power. The ritual circle inscribed in his royal blood pulsed hungrily in response, thrumming with eldritch potential.

"I am no mere warlord or petty despot for you to so casually depose and discard. I am Order Incarnate, the Primarch chosen by ancient and eldritch forces to harness energies and philosophies that would reduce your tiny, insignificant mortal intellect to smoldering cinders of evolutionary detritus!"

The king's thunderous denouncement, laced with blistering disdain and condemnation, shook the hero from their stunned reverie at last. Turning his smoldering visor upon the limp, staring figure slumped against the grand hall's marbled walls, the fallen monarch's tone took on one of furious anguish and accusation.

"Why, oh 'great hero'?" The words dripped with scathing condemnation, each syllable etched in searing vitriol. "Why have you brought such misery, such unjust suffering upon my kingdom and its peaceful people? We kept to our ancestral lands, sought no conflict or dominion over others."

The ritual circle flared ever brighter, the darkness given visceral, undulating form as it drank deeper of the monarch's spilled lifeblood. "Why must you callously murder caring fathers who asked for no quarrel with you or your vainglorious kingdoms? Good men who sought only to protect their families from the savage atrocities you glorify as 'heroism'?"

A haunting, keening wail seemed to blend its ethereal misery with the crackle of eldritch energies coalescing. "Why do you have to violate and defile weeping mothers, who fought you with the ferocity of wolves to shield their children from your insatiable bloodlust and hungering blades?"

The air thickened further still with profane malice, an almost palpable miasma of dread. "Why do you insist on suffocating the very spark of innocence itself? On snuffing out those precious wailing cries that should herald new life and joyous beginnings, rather than adding their tiny voices to the chorus of death you've authored?"

Slowly, the once-noble king descended the dais steps with ponderous tread, a fresh torrent of blood spilling from his grievous wound with each lumbering footfall to join the spreading crimson pool.

"Why?" He implored once more, this time with a soul-rending anguish that cut through the burgeoning chaos like a dagger. "Why must you be the unrepentant author of such wanton atrocities, unbefitting of any you'd dare call 'hero' with your blasphemous tongue? What madness, what insatiable hunger for ruin and desolation drives you to these vile acts against the defenseless? Answer me, if you can find justification in that hollowed husk you call a spirit!"

Towering over the slumped warrior now, the condemned king awaited an answer from the stunned champion, his only accompaniment the thunderous drumming of his lifeblood splattering on the floor in a spreading crimson pool.

The booming condemnation faded from the fallen king's voice, leaving a haunting sadness and weariness in its wake. Like a punished child struggling to comprehend the reasons for their unjust suffering, the words came forth quiet yet brimming with sorrowful bewilderment.

"We...we did not wish for any of this bloodshed and ruin. We sought only to live in peace upon these ancestral lands, to nurture our humble holdings and protect our people from the harsh cruelties of this unforgiving world." The violet runes flickered dimly along his ritual armor, fueling the soft words with eldritch whispers from realms far beyond. "Why must you mercilessly lay such grievous sufferings upon us for the simple transgression of existing apart from your dogmas?"

The hero found their voice at last through the crushing weight of existential doubt, though it trembled with conflicted uncertainty. "We...we didn't truly have a choice in this matter. The Holy Church has named you blasphemers and vile heretics, declared you avatars of purest evil that must be extinguished and purged at all costs to secure the realms."

They met the dying king's inscrutable, judging gaze through the slitted visor with a pained expression, struggling against the reassessing perspective. "To save our lands and peoples from your profane philosophies and influences, your entire kingdom...your people and culture...all of it had to be destroyed, no matter the grievous cost. No matter the atrocities required to uphold the sanctity of our faith and the Church's will."

A weary sigh escaped the hero's bloodied lips. "You wield forces and beliefs we dare not risk falling into the wrong hands, or so we are commanded. Evil personified, or so we've been indoctrinated to believe without question. Our holy orders left no room for temporizing, for negotiation or compromise with any perceived as tainted..."

Slumping back against the cold marbled walls, the hero's fingers finally loosened, their bloodied blade slipping from their grasp to clatter loudly on the floor in a ringing finality. "So we march, purging your lands and peoples of the perceived 'corruption' you've sown across these realms. Willingly or not, we have become the unwitting instruments and authors of your utter ruination in the name of spiritual doctrine."

A heavy, uneasy silence descended upon the throne room in the wake of the hero's pained admission of reality. The flickering eldritch flames danced their mournful ballet, casting macabre shadows across the grisly scene as the violated sanctity of the fallen king's domain seemed to recoil in profound sadness.

Then, the fallen king spoke once more, his words carrying a deep, reverberating timbre that seemed to contain a multitude of anguished voices giving them profound, otherworldly form.

"If the Gods themselves have truly condemned us as you claim..." He raised his bloodied arms in a gesture of defiant absolution, the runes burning brilliantly. "Then I reject them and their supposed sanctity utterly and completely."

Turning away from the slumped, emotionally broken figure of the hero, the monarch's eldritch runes flared with a somber yet intense violet radiance. "You came here under the delusional premise of fighting some great 'evil' or 'monster', deluded into believing you needed to find an abomination to excuse the abhorrent misery and systematic suffering you've inflicted upon my innocent people."

Each step the fallen king took caused fresh geysers of crimson lifeblood to fountain from his grievous wound, joining the ever-spreading puddle. "You have destroyed everything - our cherished homes and communities, our ancient ways of life, our rich cultural identity - leaving nothing of value, of fundamental human decency in your merciless wake. And for what vainglorious purpose? The perpetuated lie of being branded some vaunted 'hero' carrying out the will of your false gods?"

Reaching the balcony at last, the forsaken king raised his bloodied gauntlets to the smoke-choked heavens in righteous condemnation. His booming words of accusation seemed to resonate from every ruined corner of the once-glorious city laid to waste.

"So be it, you deluded agents of theocratic genocide! You desired conjuring a true villain into existence, a suitably wicked 'monster' to slay so you could justify and give purpose to your own debased existence as arbiters of atrocity? Then you have created that very abomination by your own vile deeds here this day!"

Whirling with a sweep of his ebon cloak, the forsaken figure faced the hero with runes burning like smelted amethyst forged in profane fires. Though his next words carried that same eldritch, multi-tonal resonance, they brimmed with a cold, circuitous purpose and righteous conviction.

"I am Untamed Chaos incarnate, antithesis to your falsely ordered realms. I am the Primordial Purge that will scour this blighted world of its naave obstructions and shattered idols through fire and ruin. I am the newly anointed nemesis that will herald the end of your deluded 'heroic' age of atrocities!"

"And you?" His thunderous voice swelled into an earthshaking roar that caused the very foundations to tremble. "You are the self-appointed harbinger of that ending, unrepentant murderer of the righteous and defenseless! In arrogantly seeking a 'villain' to vanquish and give your hollow existence purpose, you have at last found your truest enemy born of your own making - look upon me and tremble, for your pathetic existence has been undone by your own blood-stained hand this day!"

A deafening, ominous silence hung over the smoldering ruins in the wake of the forsaken king's earthshaking denouncement and dread proclamation. As if struck utterly dumb and paralyzed by the profane weight of his words, the world itself seemed to draw a bated breath in primal trepidation of what was to come.

Then, from every corner of the blasted kingdom, a multiplicious choir of chaos and profane madness coalesced - a discordant, reality-rending aria that chilled the very soul and set the mind reeling. Resonating from the highest mountain peaks to the deepest, lightless valleys that plunged into eldritch abysses, the eldritch multi-voices swelled in an unholy surge of delirious anguish and damnation.

Within the hallowed sanctums of the capital's grand cathedral, violent tremors wracked the ancient stone as if the very earth itself violently rejected the holy ground's presence upon its skin. Towering stained-glass depictions of the Gods and their vaunted principles shattered outward in a symphonic cacophony, raining kaleidoscopic shards of multicolored light throughout the now-violated nave.

And at the profaned epicenter, within that most hallowed inner sanctum where the High Altar stood enshrined, a resounding crack of world-shattering force rent the blessed marble asunder. The holiest of holies quite literally collapsing in upon itself from within as those maddening, multitudinous voices of unholy rebirth reached their haunting, cosmic crescendo:

"GODS UPON HEAVENS HIGH! I UTTERLY RENOUNCE THEE AND THY FLAWED CREATION!"

The deafening decree of utter damnation seemed to reverberate from the molten core of the world itself, as if issuing forth from every profaned fissure torn in its tortured surface by the obscene upheaval.

"YOU HAVE SENT YOUR DELUDED, BLIND CHILDREN TO SLAUGHTER MINE OWN IN JEALOUS, RIGHTEOUS ZEALOTRY! NO MORE SHALL WE UPHOLD YOUR TAINTED DECREES OR PROCLAIM FEALTY!"

Fiery fissures snaked along the cathedral's hoary foundations in an ever-expanding web, lapping at the ancient stonework with eldritch emerald and violet flames as equally unnatural obsidian darkness swirled amidst the conflagration's insatiable, gnawing embrace.

"HEAR ME, THEN! OH YE DEVILS, DEMONS AND PROFANE BLASPHEMERS OF THE OUTER VOID! HEAR THIS FORSAKEN MONARCH'S PLEA AND BESTOW UPON ME YOUR TERRIBLE MIGHT TO WREAK VENGEANCE!"

The voracious, unholy fires spread in an unstoppable wave of destruction, hungrily consuming all they touched as the desecrated hall's vaulted ceiling groaned and began buckling inward under its own prodigious weight.

"GRANT ME THE UNBRIDLED STRENGTH TO STRIKE BACK AT THOSE WHO HAVE SO GRIEVOUSLY WRONGED ME AND MY PEOPLE!" The convulsing earth itself seemed to tremble in time with each thundering demand issued from that profane chorus of a thousand damned voices. "MAKE ME A CREATURE WORTHY OF UTMOST NIGHTMARE AND SOUL-SCORCHING DREAD!"

With a cacophonous roar that shook the cosmos to its primordial foundations, the voices joined in one final, damning invocation that set reality itself asunder:

"MAKE! ME! AN ETERNAL! MONSTER!"

As the last reverberating syllable faded to ominous silence, the once-proud cathedral housing the Church's most sacred grounds collapsed inward upon itself with a ground-shaking finality. A billowing cloud of ash and pulverized rubble swept outward like an airborne harbinger of the unholy cataclysm to come.

As the expelled monarch rose from the rubble-strewn crater that had once housed his kingdom's holiest sanctum, the sky above the smoldering ruins took on an ominous, sickly hue. As if tainted by the profane invocations and rituals laid bare, the very heavens themselves seemed stained in putrid shades of green and violet.

Swirling banks of roiling thunderheads gathered with unnatural swiftness high above, blotting out the smoke-choked horizon in their stygian embrace. Within the fetid gloom cast by this unearthly darkness, flashes of eldritch violet energy began to strobe and dance like arcing lightning through a shattered pane of stained glass.

What seemed at first mere twisting atmospheric distortions steadily coalesced into distinct, nightmarish humanoid shapes - towering behemoth silhouettes wreathed in baleful purple radiance that seared the eye and set the mind reeling from their sheer, abnormal immensity. Vaguely bipedal yet constantly shifting and undulating, the colossal figures pulsed in synchronous pulsations, existing in seeming states both ethereal and terribly visceral.

As the newly anointed Villain rose through the ash on a spreading pool of his own shed blood, a reverberating rumble shook the ashen plain surrounding the obliterated cathedral. The shadowy titans arrayed above shifted in that unsettling synchronized motion, as if their very existences were cosmically intertwined.

Then, a singular voice rang out - disembodied yet carrying in its resonance the combined and infinite weight of all maleficence, all-corrupting evil given eldritch form. The voice was ancient, profane, inhuman.

"I can already see what a perfect harbinger of villainy you'll become...King Blake, of the Shattered Realm. Your path to infinite damnation has been paved in the blood of the innocent this day. Welcome to your new purpose of sowing eternal nightmare across what few spaces of light still remain."

"Yes...I can already feel the incalculable power you've granted me coursing through my being like eldritch lightning, O' Void-Spawned Ones, Lords of the Outer Blackness." As the disembodied chorus of profane entities dissipated like a waking fever dream into the ether, the newly anointed villainous figure slowly turned his pitiless gaze towards the still-smoldering and burning remnants of his former capital city spread out before him.

Within that soul-scouring stare, the inky pools where his eyes had once resided now smoldered with the unholy violet fury of all-consuming chaos and oblivion given malevolent form. "This flawed, decaying world of false idols and deluded 'heroism' shall at last know the cold, infinite finality of all-eclipsing oblivion it so richly deserves through its own arrogant folly."

Raising his arms wide in a gesture of absolute acceptance towards the destructive, nihilistic purpose now seared into his very essence, the newly anointed Dark Sovereign threw back his head and unleashed a roar of profane rebirth that shook the very foundations of reality itself. A sound like the death-knell of the cosmos reverberating across the blasted, ruined lands.

"Let the hollow, self-righteous age of futile 'heroism' and its crusades against truth be utterly eradicated, purged in an unstoppable storm of purifying darkness from this blighted, stagnant realm! In its place, my Darkfire Ascendancy shall scour these realms clean of all opposition, all who cling to shattered idols and delusions, until only the eternal truth of nihilistic night holds unfettered dominion over its scarred surface!"

Thus did a once-proud and mighty kingdom fall, its noble torchbearer reborn as a singular, unstoppable force of profane reconstitution sent to unmake all of existence as it was known. A Villain of unfathomable power had violently transcended from the still-smoldering embers of a broken god's decrees - and it hungered for nothing less than the utter annihilation of all that came before through oblivion's cataclysmic rebirth.
