The rain had started before midnight.
It tapped softly against the enormous windows of Apex Raven Global, turning the Chicago skyline into a blur of silver and gold.
Raven stood alone in the conference room.
The others had left.
Andrea had gone to continue the investigation.
Jane had gone home.
But Raven couldn't bring herself to leave.
The photograph was still on the table.
Her mother.
Mark Vance.
Adrian Vance.
And the mysterious woman wearing the silver mask.
Raven picked up the photograph again.
She studied the woman's posture.
There was something familiar about her.
Not her face.
Her manner.
The way she stood.
The confidence.
The way her hand rested lightly against Raven's mother's shoulder.
Whoever she was, she hadn't been an outsider.
She had belonged there.
Raven turned the photograph over.
Nothing.
She turned it back.
Her mother's eyes seemed to stare directly at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Raven whispered.
Her phone vibrated.
Raven glanced down.
Eleanor.
She immediately answered.
"Hey."
"Are you still at the office?"
"Yes."
"I knew it."
Raven smiled faintly.
"How?"
"Because you're terrible at taking care of yourself."
"I've been told."
Eleanor laughed softly.
Then her voice became gentler.
"Did you find anything?"
Raven looked at the photograph.
"Yes."
Eleanor was quiet.
"Is it bad?"
"I don't know yet."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Raven hesitated.
"Yes."
"Then come over."
Raven looked at the clock.
"It's almost one."
"I don't care."
Raven smiled.
"I'll be there."
---
Twenty-five minutes later, Raven arrived at Eleanor's House.
Eleanor was waiting in the private sitting room.
She was wearing a simple silk robe over her night clothes, her hair loosely tied behind her.
The moment Raven walked in, Eleanor could tell something was wrong.
"You look exhausted."
Raven removed her coat.
"So do you."
"I've been waiting."
Raven walked toward her.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize."
Eleanor reached for her hand.
"Tell me."
Raven sat beside her.
For a few moments, she simply stared at the floor.
Then she finally spoke.
"Your father and Adrian weren't just connected to my mother."
Eleanor's expression changed.
"What were they?"
"They were trustees on a private account my mother created."
"For you?"
Raven nodded.
"My mother created it five years before she died."
Eleanor frowned.
"Why would she trust my father and uncle with something that belonged to you?"
"I don't know."
"What was the money for?"
"I don't know that either."
Eleanor squeezed her hand.
"But there's something else."
"What?"
"There was a transaction three days before my mother died."
Eleanor's heart began pounding.
"From the trust?"
"Yes."
"Who made it?"
"My mother."
Eleanor stared at her.
"She paid someone?"
"We haven't found out who."
"Then why does this change everything?"
"Because I spent five years believing the people around my mother were responsible for what happened."
Raven's voice became quieter.
"Now I don't know what happened."
Eleanor leaned closer.
"You'll find out."
Raven looked at her.
"How can you be so sure?"
"Because you're Raven."
A small smile appeared on Raven's face.
"And because you have me."
Raven's smile faded slightly.
"Eleanor…"
"Yes?"
"If the truth hurts you—"
"Then I'll deal with it."
"Even if it involves your father?"
Eleanor didn't hesitate.
"Even then."
Raven stared at her.
"You shouldn't have to choose."
"I know."
"Then don't."
Eleanor reached up and touched Raven's cheek.
"I already chose you."
Raven closed her eyes briefly.
When she opened them, there was something vulnerable in them.
"You make it very difficult to remain ruthless."
Eleanor smiled.
"Maybe that's my secret talent."
Raven laughed quietly.
Then she leaned forward.
Their lips met.
The kiss was soft at first.
Then deeper.
There was no urgency, no fear, just the quiet reassurance that neither woman was alone.
When they separated, Eleanor rested her forehead against Raven's.
"Stay tonight."
Raven looked at her.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Raven nodded.
"I'll stay."
---
Across the city, Adrian Vance stood in an underground parking garage.
His black car waited nearby.
A woman stepped out of the shadows.
She wore a long black coat.
Her face was hidden beneath a silver mask.
Adrian looked at her.
"You shouldn't have come here."
The woman laughed softly.
"You called me."
"I needed information."
"You always do."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Raven found the trust."
The woman went silent.
"How much?"
"Enough."
"Does she know about the payment?"
"Yes."
"Does she know who received it?"
"No."
The woman relaxed slightly.
"Good."
Adrian stared at her.
"You sound relieved."
"I am."
"She will keep digging."
"I know."
"And when she finds out about Mark?"
The woman tilted her head.
"She will hate him."
"And Eleanor?"
A pause.
"She may hate her too."
Adrian frowned.
"That's not what I asked."
The woman stepped closer.
"Eleanor is the only thing that can make Raven stop."
Adrian's expression darkened.
"You're suggesting we use her?"
"I'm suggesting you understand what Raven values."
Adrian stared at the mask.
"You've changed."
"No."
The woman's voice became colder.
"I've simply stopped being afraid."
She turned to leave.
Adrian called after her.
"Why did Ellen trust you?"
The woman stopped.
For several seconds, she didn't turn around.
Then she answered.
"She didn't."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
The woman slowly looked back.
"She trusted the wrong person."
Then she disappeared into the darkness.
---
The following morning, Raven woke before Eleanor.
She remained still for several minutes.
Eleanor was sleeping beside her.
Peaceful.
Unaware of the storm surrounding their families.
Raven carefully got out of bed.
She walked to the window.
Her phone was waiting on the table.
A new message from Andrea.
I found her.
Raven's heart immediately started beating faster.
She opened the message.
There was an attachment.
A photograph.
The woman in the silver mask.
But this photograph was different.
The woman wasn't standing beside Raven's mother.
She was standing beside Mark Vance.
And the date on the photograph was only six months ago.
Raven stared at it.
She zoomed in.
The woman was alive.
She had been meeting Mark recently.
Raven's eyes hardened.
Another message appeared.
Andrea:
There is more.
Raven typed quickly.
Raven:
Send it.
The response came seconds later.
A second photograph.
This time, the woman was standing beside Adrian.
Raven's stomach dropped.
Both Vance brothers were still in contact with her.
The mystery wasn't buried.
It was active.
Then Andrea sent one final message.
We identified the location where she meets them.
Raven stared at the screen.
Then she looked back at Eleanor.
She had promised not to shut her out.
But she also knew that confronting the woman in the silver mask could put Eleanor directly in danger.
Raven slipped her phone into her pocket.
She would handle this first.
Alone.
---
Eleanor woke moments later.
She opened her eyes and found Raven standing near the window.
"Good morning."
Raven turned.
"Good morning."
Eleanor smiled.
"You look serious."
"Work."
Eleanor sat up.
"Another mystery?"
Raven walked toward her.
"Something like that."
Eleanor reached for her.
Raven sat beside her.
"You're hiding something."
Raven smiled faintly.
"You're becoming too observant."
"Your fault."
Raven kissed her forehead.
"Get some rest."
"Are you leaving?"
"For a while."
"Where?"
Raven hesitated.
"There's something I need to investigate."
Eleanor studied her.
"By yourself?"
"Yes."
"I don't like that."
"I'll be careful."
Eleanor sighed.
"Promise?"
"I promise."
But as Raven left the room, she knew she had already broken one promise.
She wasn't going to tell Eleanor everything.
Not yet.
Because if Andrea was right, the woman in the silver mask wasn't simply connected to Mark and Adrian.
She was connected to Raven's mother.
And possibly to the night Ellen Hale died.
---
Two hours later, Raven stood outside an abandoned private club on the outskirts of the city.
Andrea's information had led her there.
Raven stepped out of her car.
Her security team remained hidden nearby.
She entered the building alone.
The corridors were dark.
Silent.
Then she heard footsteps.
Raven stopped.
A woman's voice echoed through the hallway.
"You shouldn't have come here."
Raven's blood ran cold.
She knew that voice.
Not from memory.
From the recordings Andrea had sent her.
Raven slowly turned.
The woman stood at the end of the hallway.
The silver mask covered most of her face.
But Raven could see her eyes.
Cold.
Calm.
Familiar.
Raven's hand tightened into a fist.
"Who are you?"
The woman tilted her head.
"You've spent five years asking the wrong question."
Raven took a step forward.
"Then tell me the right one."
The woman smiled beneath the mask.
"Ask yourself why your mother wanted you to believe she was dead."
Raven froze.
The woman turned and walked away.
Raven immediately followed.
"Wait!"
But when she reached the next room—
the woman was gone.
Only a small envelope remained on the floor.
Raven picked it up.
Her name was written across the front.
RAVEN HALE.
Her hands tightened around it.
She opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Raven's mother.
Mark.
Adrian.
And the masked woman.
But there was someone else in the picture.
A much younger girl.
Raven stared at the photograph.
Her breath caught.
The girl was Eleanor.
To be continued…
