Chapter 48 - Ch 48: Adrian's Betrayal

The room went completely silent.

Adrian stood in the doorway of Ellen Hale's old estate, his expression calm.

Too calm.

Raven stood between him and Eleanor.

Victor remained near the desk, his face pale.

Eleanor's heart was pounding.

She had never seen Adrian look at her that way before.

Not like a niece.

Not like family.

Like a problem.

Adrian smiled.

"It's been a long time, Eleanor."

Eleanor stared at him.

"I don't remember seeing you here."

"You were very young."

Victor immediately stepped forward.

"Adrian, leave."

Adrian looked at him.

"Still protecting them?"

Victor's jaw tightened.

"Ellen asked me to."

"And she's dead."

Victor's expression hardened.

"Because people like you made sure of it."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

Raven stepped forward.

"Careful."

Adrian looked at her.

"You're becoming exactly like your mother."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"You knew Ellen."

"I knew her very well."

"You knew she was investigating the Blackwood Circle."

"Yes."

"You knew about Eleanor."

"Yes."

"You knew she was here the night Ellen died."

Adrian didn't answer.

Raven took another step.

"Did you drug her?"

Eleanor's breath caught.

Adrian looked at Eleanor.

"No."

Raven studied him.

"You're lying."

Adrian smiled.

"You always did have your mother's instincts."

"Then tell me who did."

"No."

Raven's jaw clenched.

"Why?"

"Because you're asking the wrong question."

Raven laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Adrian's eyes moved toward Eleanor.

"The right question is why Ellen was willing to risk everything to protect that girl."

Eleanor felt a chill.

"Why?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Because your father was not the only person she feared."

Eleanor's face went pale.

"Who else?"

Adrian's smile returned.

"Ask your mother."

"My mother doesn't know."

"Oh, she knows."

Eleanor froze.

"You're lying."

"Am I?"

Adrian took another step inside.

"Your mother has spent years pretending she doesn't remember."

Raven immediately looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor shook her head.

"My mother never told me."

"Of course she didn't."

Adrian's voice became almost sympathetic.

"She was trying to protect you."

Raven's expression hardened.

"Enough."

Adrian looked at her.

"You think this is about revenge."

"It is."

"No."

He shook his head.

"It's about survival."

---

A sudden sound came from outside.

Victor looked toward the windows.

"More cars."

Raven's security instincts immediately took over.

"How many?"

"Three."

Adrian smiled.

"Then I suggest you listen to me."

Raven looked at him.

"Why would I?"

"Because if they enter this house, Eleanor won't leave with you."

Eleanor's blood ran cold.

"Who are they?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Raven reached for her phone.

"No signal."

Victor checked his.

"Mine too."

Raven looked at Adrian.

"You planned this."

"No."

Adrian's expression became serious.

"I came here because Mark made a mistake."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"What mistake?"

"He tried to move the woman in the silver mask."

Eleanor stared at him.

"The woman?"

Adrian nodded.

"Mark wanted her out of the country."

"Why?"

"Because she knows too much."

Raven's mind raced.

"You betrayed him."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Yes."

Raven stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because Mark has become sentimental."

"You mean Eleanor."

Adrian looked at his niece.

"Yes."

Eleanor's stomach tightened.

"He wants to protect you."

"And you don't?"

Adrian laughed.

"I want to survive."

---

Across the city, Mark sat inside a private office.

His phone remained on the desk.

No response from Adrian.

He called again.

Nothing.

Mark's expression darkened.

"Where are you?"

He called another number.

"Find my brother."

The man on the other end answered.

"We've lost contact."

Mark stood.

"What do you mean?"

"His phone was last detected near the Hale property."

Mark's blood ran cold.

"Raven."

He immediately grabbed his coat.

---

Back at the estate, Raven was studying Adrian.

"You knew we'd come here."

"Yes."

"You knew Eleanor would remember."

"I suspected."

"And you knew Victor was here."

"Yes."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"Then why bring us here?"

Adrian's expression became unreadable.

"Because I need your help."

Eleanor looked at him in disbelief.

"You're asking Raven for help?"

"I'm offering her the truth."

Raven crossed her arms.

"Talk."

Adrian looked toward Victor.

"Tell her."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

Adrian sighed.

"Then I'll do it."

He turned toward Raven.

"Ellen discovered that the Blackwood Circle had been using powerful families to move money, influence businesses, and control people."

Raven listened.

"That isn't new."

"No."

Adrian looked at Eleanor.

"But one part was."

"What?"

"Children from certain families were being used as leverage."

Eleanor's face became pale.

Raven immediately looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian continued.

"If a family refused to cooperate, the organization would threaten someone they loved."

Raven's voice became cold.

"And Eleanor was one of those people."

"Yes."

Eleanor's breathing became shallow.

"My father agreed to something?"

Adrian nodded.

"Mark made an agreement."

"With the Blackwood Circle?"

"Yes."

Raven's eyes hardened.

"What did he give them?"

"Access."

"To what?"

"To Vance Capital's financial network."

Eleanor stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because he was afraid."

"Of them?"

"Of what they could do to you."

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

Adrian's voice became quieter.

"Your father thought cooperating would keep you safe."

Raven shook her head.

"And Ellen discovered it."

"Yes."

"She tried to stop them."

"Yes."

"And that's why she died?"

Adrian looked away.

"No."

Raven froze.

"Then why?"

Adrian's expression changed.

"Because Ellen discovered who was actually controlling the operation."

"Who?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Raven stepped closer.

"Who?"

Adrian looked directly at her.

"Someone neither you nor Mark expected."

The room fell silent.

Eleanor whispered,

"Who?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Your mother."

Eleanor's eyes widened.

"No."

"Yes."

"My mother would never…"

"She wasn't working for them."

Adrian shook his head.

"She was trying to destroy them."

Raven stared at him.

"What does Sofia have to do with Ellen?"

Adrian took a slow breath.

"Everything."

---

Suddenly, the front door slammed open.

Several armed men entered the house.

Raven immediately pulled Eleanor behind her.

Victor reached for a weapon hidden beneath the desk.

Adrian stepped backward.

"Now you understand why I came."

Raven looked at him.

"You brought them here."

"No."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"They followed me."

The men moved through the hallway.

A voice shouted,

"Search every room!"

Raven's security team wasn't there.

Her phone had no signal.

They were trapped.

Eleanor whispered,

"What do we do?"

Raven looked around.

Then at Victor.

"Is there another exit?"

Victor nodded.

"Through the basement."

Adrian heard him.

"Go."

Raven looked at Adrian.

"And you?"

"I'll handle them."

Raven almost laughed.

"Why would I trust you?"

"You don't."

Adrian looked at Eleanor.

"But you should trust the fact that I want Mark dead as much as you do."

Raven's expression changed.

"Mark?"

Adrian nodded.

"He is the reason Ellen's secrets remained buried."

Raven stepped closer.

"Did he kill her?"

"No."

"Then who did?"

Adrian looked at the doorway.

"The person who did is the same person Mark has been protecting all these years."

Raven's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Adrian whispered,

"Your mother wasn't the only person who survived that night."

Raven froze.

"What?"

Before Adrian could explain, gunfire erupted somewhere downstairs.

Eleanor screamed.

Victor grabbed her.

"Basement. Now!"

Raven pulled Eleanor toward the hidden door.

Adrian stayed behind.

Raven looked back.

"Adrian!"

He met her eyes.

"Find the truth."

The hidden door closed.

Raven and Eleanor disappeared into the darkness.

---

The basement was cold.

Eleanor held Raven's hand tightly as they moved through the narrow corridor.

"What did he mean?"

"I don't know."

"Raven."

"I don't know."

They reached a staircase.

At the bottom was another room.

Victor opened an old metal door.

Inside were boxes.

Dozens of them.

Raven stopped.

"What is this?"

Victor looked at her.

"Everything Ellen left behind."

Raven's eyes widened.

"Why didn't you show me before?"

"Because she made me promise."

Raven stepped inside.

There were letters.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Old journals.

Then Eleanor noticed a small wooden box.

She picked it up.

Her hands began trembling.

"I remember this."

Raven turned.

"What?"

"My childhood."

Eleanor opened the box.

Inside was a silver necklace.

The moment she touched it, another memory struck.

Ellen kneeling in front of her.

Putting the necklace around her neck.

Whispering,

"If you ever forget, this will help you remember."

Eleanor gasped.

Raven caught her.

"What did you see?"

Eleanor looked up.

Tears streamed down her face.

"My mother was there."

"Sofia?"

Eleanor nodded.

"She was talking to Ellen."

"What did they say?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Then she remembered.

Sofia's voice.

"If they discover what we know, they'll kill both of us."

Ellen's response.

"Then we make sure Eleanor survives."

Eleanor opened her eyes.

"Raven…"

"What?"

"My mother and Ellen were working together."

Raven stared at her.

"For what?"

Eleanor looked at the necklace.

"I don't know."

Then she saw something engraved on the back.

A single symbol.

The same symbol Raven had seen on the documents connected to the Blackwood Circle.

Raven's expression changed.

"This isn't over."

Eleanor looked at her.

"No."

Raven held her hand.

"It just started."

Above them, another gunshot echoed through the house.

Then silence.

And somewhere upstairs, Adrian Vance stood alone in the study.

Mark had arrived.

The two brothers stared at each other.

Mark's voice was cold.

"What did you do?"

Adrian smiled.

"What you were too afraid to do."

"You betrayed me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"Because unlike you, Mark…"

He looked toward the basement door.

"I don't intend to die protecting a secret that isn't ours."

Mark's face went pale.

"What secret?"

Adrian smiled.

"The truth about Ellen Hale."

Then he walked away.

Mark stood frozen.

Because he suddenly realized Adrian had betrayed him—

but not for Raven.

Not for Eleanor.

Adrian had his own plan.
