Chapter Fifty-Nine
The Rescue
Rain began falling over Blackwood Heights just before midnight.
The city disappeared beneath a curtain of darkness and silver.
Inside Vanessa's villa, Raven stood in front of a long table covered with maps, photographs, weapons, and surveillance reports.
Every member of Vanessa's organization had been called in.
No masks tonight.
No pretending.
Everyone knew exactly who they were protecting.
Eleanor.
Raven stood at the head of the table.
Vanessa was beside her.
Andrea entered the room carrying a laptop.
"I found the warehouse."
Raven looked up.
"Show me."
Andrea turned the laptop around.
A satellite image appeared.
"The old Blackwood industrial district. Warehouse seventeen."
Vanessa studied the image.
"Adrian chose this location deliberately."
"Why?" Raven asked.
"Because it's surrounded by abandoned buildings."
Andrea nodded.
"And there are only two functioning roads leading into the area."
Raven looked at the map.
"So he expects us to enter through one of them."
"Yes."
"Then we don't."
Andrea smiled faintly.
"That's what I thought."
She tapped the screen.
"There is an underground service tunnel beneath the eastern building."
Raven's eyes narrowed.
"Can it get us inside?"
"Yes."
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
"Then that's our entrance."
Raven nodded.
"What about the people guarding the warehouse?"
Andrea's expression became serious.
"At least twenty."
"Armed?"
"Yes."
"Adrian?"
"Inside."
"Andrew?"
Andrea hesitated.
"We don't know."
Raven's expression hardened.
"Find him."
Andrea nodded.
"And Mark?"
"Missing."
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Then they're all together."
Raven looked at the map.
"Good."
Vanessa glanced at her.
"Good?"
Raven's voice was cold.
"It means we only have to finish this once."
---
Across the city, Eleanor sat in a dark room.
Her hands were still tied, but she had managed to loosen the rope slightly.
She looked toward the door.
No one was there.
She carefully shifted her wrists.
A little more.
The rope loosened.
She almost smiled.
Then footsteps approached.
Eleanor immediately stopped moving.
The door opened.
Adrian entered.
He looked calm.
Almost relaxed.
"You've been quiet."
Eleanor stared at him.
"I don't have anything to say to you."
Adrian pulled a chair across from her.
"You're brave."
"No."
She looked directly at him.
"I'm angry."
He smiled.
"That makes you dangerous."
"Good."
Adrian leaned back.
"You care about Raven."
"Yes."
"You know she will come."
"Yes."
"You know I can kill her."
Eleanor's expression didn't change.
"You won't."
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"Why?"
"Because you need her."
His smile disappeared.
Eleanor continued.
"If you wanted her dead, she would already be dead."
Adrian studied her.
"You're smarter than I expected."
"I've spent enough time around Raven."
A faint smile appeared on Eleanor's face.
"She taught me."
Adrian stood.
"You really believe she can save you?"
Eleanor looked him straight in the eyes.
"No."
Adrian smiled.
"I knew it."
"I believe she will."
His smile disappeared again.
Eleanor continued.
"There's a difference."
---
The underground tunnel was cold.
Raven moved silently through the darkness.
Vanessa was beside her.
Andrea followed with two members of the organization.
Jeff came last.
Raven glanced over her shoulder.
"You didn't have to come."
Jeff shook his head.
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because I owe you."
Raven stopped walking.
"You don't owe me your life."
"I know."
"Then what?"
Jeff looked at her.
"I owe you a choice."
Raven waited.
"I chose myself when I betrayed you over Bella."
His voice was quiet.
"I won't do that again."
Raven stared at him.
She still remembered the betrayal.
The anger.
The humiliation.
The pain of knowing someone she trusted had deliberately taken Bella from her.
Forgiveness wasn't coming tonight.
But perhaps trust could be rebuilt one decision at a time.
Raven nodded.
"Stay behind me."
Jeff almost smiled.
"Still giving orders."
"Always."
They continued.
---
At the end of the tunnel, Vanessa raised her hand.
Everyone stopped.
Voices could be heard above them.
Two guards.
Raven looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa nodded.
They moved.
Within seconds, both guards were silently disarmed.
Raven stepped into the warehouse.
She looked around.
"Where is she?"
Andrea checked her device.
"Second floor."
Raven immediately started moving.
Vanessa caught her arm.
"Wait."
Raven looked at her.
Vanessa pointed upward.
"There are cameras."
Andrea nodded.
"I can disable them."
"Do it."
Andrea began working.
One by one, the cameras went dark.
Raven looked toward the staircase.
"Now."
They moved.
---
Eleanor heard the sound of footsteps.
Her heart jumped.
"Raven?"
The door opened.
Adrian stepped inside.
"She's here."
Eleanor's eyes widened.
"What?"
Adrian smiled.
"She came exactly as I knew she would."
Eleanor's fear disappeared.
A small smile replaced it.
"You're finished."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
"You made one mistake."
"What mistake?"
"You thought Raven would come alone."
A loud explosion shook the building.
Adrian turned.
The lights went out.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Eleanor smiled.
"I told you."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You…"
Eleanor laughed softly.
"She doesn't fight fair."
---
Raven moved through the second floor.
Gunfire echoed below.
Vanessa was behind her.
Andrea stayed near the stairwell.
Jeff covered the opposite corridor.
Raven kicked open the first door.
Empty.
Second.
Empty.
Third—
Eleanor.
Raven froze.
"Eleanor."
Eleanor looked up.
"Raven!"
Raven rushed toward her.
She cut the restraints.
Eleanor immediately threw her arms around her.
Raven held her tightly.
"I thought I lost you."
Eleanor buried her face against Raven's shoulder.
"I knew you'd come."
Vanessa entered.
Her eyes softened when she saw them.
"Are you hurt?"
Eleanor shook her head.
"No."
Raven pulled back.
"Did he hurt you?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Raven looked around.
"Where is Adrian?"
Eleanor's expression changed.
"He was here."
"Where?"
"He left when the shooting started."
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Of course."
Raven helped Eleanor stand.
"Let's go."
They reached the hallway.
Then the lights suddenly came back on.
Everyone froze.
A voice came through the speakers.
"Congratulations."
Adrian.
Raven looked around.
"You got what you came for."
Adrian's voice continued.
"But you haven't finished the game."
Raven's eyes narrowed.
"Show yourself."
"You've spent years looking for the person who betrayed Ellen."
Raven's expression hardened.
"You."
"No."
The voice became almost amused.
"I'm the person who arranged it."
Raven froze.
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Arranged what?"
"The lies."
A pause.
"The marriage."
Another pause.
"The attack."
Vanessa's hands tightened.
"And Ellen's death."
Raven stepped closer to the speaker.
"You killed her."
"I gave the order."
Silence.
Eleanor looked at Raven.
Raven's face had gone completely cold.
Adrian continued.
"But there is something you still don't understand."
"What?"
"Ellen wasn't my only target."
Raven's eyes narrowed.
"Who else?"
A door opened at the far end of the warehouse.
Andrew walked out.
Raven immediately raised her weapon.
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
Andrew looked at them.
"Me."
Raven stared.
"What does that mean?"
Andrew looked at Adrian.
"You've said enough."
Adrian laughed.
"You're still afraid."
Andrew's jaw tightened.
"Of you?"
"No."
Adrian's voice became cold.
"Of what Raven will discover about you."
Raven looked between them.
"What did you do?"
Andrew didn't answer.
"Answer me!"
Andrew finally looked at her.
"I made a mistake."
Raven's eyes narrowed.
"What mistake?"
"Trusting Adrian."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"That isn't everything."
Andrew looked at her.
"No."
His expression became exhausted.
"It isn't."
Raven's voice was dangerously quiet.
"Then tell me."
Andrew looked at her.
"The night Ellen died…"
He paused.
"I was there."
Raven's heart stopped.
Vanessa's face hardened.
"You lied to me."
Andrew nodded.
"Yes."
"You watched her die."
"I tried to stop it."
Raven's eyes filled with anger.
"Then why didn't you save her?"
Andrew looked away.
"Because by the time I understood what Adrian had planned…"
He swallowed.
"…it was already too late."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You knew."
"I knew something was wrong."
"You knew enough to stop it."
Andrew shook his head.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"I knew enough to realize I had helped create the circumstances that led to it."
Raven stared at him.
"You married my mother."
"Yes."
"You used her."
"Yes."
"You knew about Vanessa."
"Yes."
"You knew about me."
"Yes."
"And you still stood there."
Andrew's eyes filled with regret.
"Yes."
Raven's voice broke.
"I hate you."
Andrew lowered his head.
"I know."
A sudden gunshot rang out.
Andrew staggered.
Vanessa immediately pulled Raven and Eleanor behind cover.
Jeff fired toward the upper balcony.
"Adrian!"
But Adrian was already gone.
A second shot rang out.
Andrew fell to the ground.
Raven stared.
"Andrew!"
Jeff rushed toward him.
Vanessa looked upward.
"Find Adrian!"
Andrea and several operatives moved immediately.
Raven knelt beside Andrew.
Blood spread across his shirt.
He looked at her.
"Raven…"
She stared at him.
"Don't die."
Andrew gave a weak smile.
"Why?"
Raven's eyes filled with tears.
"Because you don't get to leave before telling me everything."
Andrew coughed.
"There is…"
He struggled to breathe.
"…one more secret."
Raven leaned closer.
"What?"
Andrew's eyes moved toward Vanessa.
"Your grandfather…"
He stopped.
Raven's heart raced.
"My grandfather what?"
Andrew's breathing became shallow.
"William…"
Then his eyes closed.
Raven froze.
"Andrew?"
No response.
"Andrew!"
Vanessa checked his pulse.
Her expression changed.
"He's alive."
Raven exhaled.
But before she could say anything, Andrea's voice came through the radio.
"We have a problem."
Raven stood.
"What?"
Andrea's voice trembled.
"Adrian escaped."
Vanessa looked toward the warehouse entrance.
"And?"
Andrea hesitated.
"He wasn't alone."
Raven's expression hardened.
"Who was with him?"
Andrea answered.
"Mark."
Raven's eyes narrowed.
Then Andrea added:
"And we found evidence that they were working with someone inside Vanessa's organization."
Vanessa went completely still.
"Who?"
Andrea's voice dropped.
"We haven't confirmed the identity yet."
Raven looked at her mother.
For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.
Because the betrayal wasn't over.
Adrian had only been the beginning.
And someone they trusted was still hiding among them.
To be continued…
