Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Family Trip(Part 3)

The music rose the moment they stepped onto the floor, a bright melody floating through the hall. The room buzzed with chatter and anticipation, but when Eadlyn and Sakuya took their positions, an unusual hush settled over the crowd.

Sakuya's hand fit lightly into his, her posture elegant yet relaxed. Her confidence steadied him, and when the first beats struck, they moved—smoothly, almost instinctively.

Sakuya spun forward, their steps aligned with surprising precision. Eadlyn guided her, letting his old training take over. They weren't perfect, but they were perfectly in sync.

And the crowd felt it.

Whispers spread.

"Who are they?"

"That's Sakuya, right? But the boy—he's good."

"Are they professionals?"

The music shifted into a faster rhythm, and something wild sparked between them. Rather than following the simplest combination, Sakuya challenged him with a quick turn. Eadlyn responded with a step variation of his own, surprising her.

Her eyes widened.

"You can keep up?"

He grinned. "Try me."

What began as a dance became a playful duel—move against move, rhythm against rhythm. They weren't partners anymore; they were rivals showcasing their strength, feeding off each other's energy like seasoned performers.

Laughter bubbled from Sakuya, light and free. Eadlyn felt exhilaration rise within him. The audience clapped in beat, excitement swelling.

As the final crescendo hit, Sakuya leapt into a turn, and Eadlyn caught her mid-spin, guiding her into a graceful finish.

Applause thundered across the hall.

They stood breathless, exchanging a triumphant glance that needed no words.

Victory and the Hidden Bond

When the host announced the winners—Sakuya Horikawa and Eadlyn Greyson—the hall erupted. Sakuya bounced like a child, her earlier elegance replaced by pure joy.

She hugged the giant teddy bear prize to her chest and turned to Eadlyn.

"Thank you," she beamed. "I really wanted this."

He laughed. "Happy to help. That was… fun. More than I expected."

Sakuya's eyes softened with an emotion he didn't immediately recognize.

"You're different from how you look. You carry rhythm well."

"Thanks," he replied, a small warmth rising in his chest.

To his surprise, she added quietly, "I've seen your pictures before, you know. Our families share stories."

He blinked. "Oh… really?"

She nodded, amused by his reaction. "You didn't recognize me, did you?"

"No. Should I have?"

"Not necessarily," she shrugged. "But I remembered you."

Her honesty made something in his chest stir—an unfamiliar kind of recognition. Not romantic, not dramatic… but human. The kind of familiarity that roots itself without notice.

A Glimpse Into the Past

After the event, they joined their grandparents and Sakuya's grandfather at a table near the back. The old men teased each other, recalling adventures from their youth—fights, festivals, and the silly stunts they used to pull.

"You two danced better than we ever could," Horikawa-san joked.

Reno laughed. "Speak for yourself. I had moves."

Sakuya flushed slightly at the praise, but her grandfather nudged her.

"You should dance more often. Don't hide your talent."

Her eyes dropped for a moment before she smiled. "Maybe."

Eadlyn observed quietly. There was more to Sakuya than her calm professionalism. Beneath it lay discipline, talent, and a gentle longing—perhaps for something she hadn't admitted even to herself.

Final Moments of the Day

The group left the hall and began their walk back. Street lamps lit the path in warm gold. Sakuya walked beside him, her steps light, teddy bear bouncing with each movement.

"Thank you again," she said, softer than before. "Today was… memorable."

"It was," he agreed.

They parted at the shop entrance. She waved once before disappearing inside.

Reno placed a hand on Eadlyn's shoulder.

"Good memories, hm?"

Eadlyn nodded. "Yeah. More than I expected."

What he didn't say—but quietly felt—was that moments like these formed the foundation of friendships, trust, and understanding. Things he knew he would need as he grew into the life waiting for him in Japan.

Tonight wasn't romance.

Tonight was connection.

And sometimes, connection is the first step toward understanding love.
