Chapter 70 - After State

The space did not break.

It adjusted.

The remaining creatures did not rush.

They repositioned.

Distance between them tightened, then widened again—controlled, deliberate.

Not reacting.

Learning.

Victor stood still for half a breath.

The blade in his hand flickered.

Not failing.

Not stable.

Jake shifted slightly to his right.

"They're not repeating the same pattern," he said. "They're correcting."

Victor didn't look at him.

"Good."

One creature stepped forward.

Not fast.

Not slow.

Precise.

Victor moved.

The strike landed.

Clean.

This time—

The creature did not vanish.

It distorted.

Then reformed.

Victor stepped back once.

Not retreating.

Measuring.

"…So that only works once," he said.

Liora watched carefully.

"They're not separate," she said quietly.

Jake turned his head slightly.

"What do you mean?"

Her gaze remained forward.

"They're being held together."

A pause.

"Not individually."

Jake understood.

"…So we're wasting time fighting them."

Victor exhaled once.

"Then we stop."

The creatures moved again.

Not to attack.

To contain.

Space tightened.

Movement paths reduced.

Jake spoke quickly, but calmly.

"Left side is weaker. It takes longer to stabilize."

Victor adjusted.

A second voice followed.

"Don't commit fully," Liora said. "They're waiting for that."

Victor nodded once.

He moved.

Not through them.

Between them.

A strike deflected.

Another redirected.

A third avoided entirely.

The path wasn't clear.

It didn't need to be.

It only needed to exist long enough.

The figure ahead did not move.

Not yet.

Jake's voice came again.

"Now."

Victor stepped in.

The blade shifted.

Heat tightened.

Light steadied for a moment.

One creature moved to intercept.

Victor didn't slow.

The strike connected.

It didn't cut through.

It erased.

The space reacted.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

Just—

A correction.

The remaining creatures paused.

Then—

Stopped.

The figure shifted its weight slightly.

Not defensive.

Not threatened.

Observing.

Victor stood in front of him.

Close enough.

The blade flickered harder now.

"…You adapted faster than expected," the figure said.

Victor didn't lower his weapon.

"You're done."

The figure looked at him.

Not at the blade.

At him.

"No," he said calmly.

"I've seen enough."

The creatures behind Victor lost form.

Not collapsing.

Not destroyed.

Released.

The space loosened.

Victor held position for a moment longer.

Then—

The blade flickered again.

Stronger.

He felt it.

The resistance.

He loosened his grip slightly.

"…Not yet," he said quietly.

The light dimmed.

The heat faded.

The blade dissolved.

Nothing remained in his hand.

The figure turned.

No urgency.

No retreat in fear.

"You are earlier than expected," he said.

Then—

He was gone.

No distortion.

No sound.

Just absence.

The space returned.

Not fully normal.

But no longer active.

Victor didn't move.

Jake stepped closer.

"…That wasn't a fight."

Victor shook his head slightly.

"No."

Liora exhaled slowly.

"It was a test."

None of them argued.

The mission had ended.

Not with victory.

Not with loss.

With confirmation.

### Later

The room was quiet.

No guards.

No noise.

Just three people.

Dominus sat across from them.

Still.

Unmoving.

Jake stood near the side.

Liora beside him.

Dominus spoke first.

"You encountered something beyond your level."

It wasn't a question.

Jake nodded once.

"Yes."

Dominus's gaze shifted slightly.

"To him."

Victor was not in the room.

Liora answered instead.

"He used something he shouldn't have been able to use."

Jake added,

"He didn't control it."

Dominus remained silent for a moment.

Then—

"It responded."

Neither of them disagreed.

Jake spoke.

"…What does that mean?"

Dominus's gaze settled forward.

"It means it was not power."

A pause.

"It was recognition."

The room held stillness.

Liora spoke softly.

"Recognition of what?"

Dominus did not answer immediately.

Then—

"That depends on whether he survives long enough to understand it."

Jake exhaled quietly.

Liora's voice followed.

"He will."

Dominus did not argue.

The conversation ended there.

Not formally.

Not abruptly.

Just—

Complete.

Outside, nothing had changed.

The world continued.

Unaware.

But something had begun.

Not earned.

Not claimed.

Acknowledged.
