Chapter 1 - The Edge of Survival

The city of Vesper was a sanctuary surrounded by desolation, a beacon of light amidst a world shrouded in perpetual twilight. Its towering walls kept the horrors of the Outer Zone—once the thriving industrial and residential districts of Vesper—at bay. Unfortunately, those same walls enclosed a population teetering on the brink of destitution. Within these walls, survival was a daily struggle, and for scavengers like Nero, it was a game of high stakes and narrow margins.Vesper was divided into three distinct rings, each representing a different class of society. The Outer Ring, where Nero resided, was a grim place filled with the poor and desperate. Its streets were crowded and resources scarce, a harsh reality for those who called it home. The Middle Ring housed the working class and lower-ranking officials, a slightly more stable environment but still fraught with its own challenges. In stark contrast, the Inner Ring was the domain of the city's elite—the Highborns—who lived in opulence and luxury, shielded from the harsh realities faced by the rest of the population.Nero moved silently through the bustling marketplace of the Outer Ring, his senses on high alert. The crowd was thick with traders, beggars, and thieves, all fighting for space and opportunity. Every face marked by the same desperation and hunger to survive. His stomach gnawed at him, a stark reminder that today had to be different. He needed a good haul if he didn't want to starve. The marketplace was a cacophony of voices, haggling and shouting over the noises of rattling coins and rustling goods. Nero kept his head down, avoiding eye contact as he navigated the labyrinth of stalls and carts. His destination was a small, nondescript shop on the outskirts of the market, known to deal in relics from the Outer Zone.As he approached the shop, a familiar figure emerged from the shadows. Felix, a fellow scavenger and occasional partner, leaned casually against the doorframe, his eyes scanning the crowd with practiced ease. Catching sight of Nero, a playful smirk appeared on the edge of his lips."Well, if it isn't Nero," Felix said, pushing off the doorframe and crossing his arms. "Been a while since I saw you around these parts. Thought you might've finally found something worth retiring on.""That's easier said than done," Nero replied, matching his smirk. "Just trying to keep my head above water."Felix nodded, his expression turning serious. "I got word there's a new stash in the Outer Zone. Some old factory, untouched by scavengers. Could be worth a fortune if the rumors are true."Nero's eyes flickered with interest before caution quickly extinguished the spark. "Sounds too good to be true. You and I both know that untouched places usually stay that way for a reason.""True," Felix admitted, "but sometimes you have to take risks. Especially with the way things are now."He didn't need to elaborate. It was getting harder to make a living for everyone. The Outer Ring was too crowded, and resources were getting scarcer. More and more people were venturing out into the Outer Zone, hoping to find anything that could help them get by.Nero glanced around, ensuring no one was eavesdropping. "Tell me more about this factory."Felix leaned in, lowering his voice. "It's in Sector Seven. Supposedly, it was a research facility before the Cataclysm. People say there's valuable tech inside, things that could fetch a high price."Sector Seven. The name alone sent a shiver down Nero's spine. It was one of the most dangerous areas in the Outer Zone, infested with wraiths and other creatures. No scavenger in their right mind would go there unless they were desperate."You're not seriously thinking about going, are you?" Nero asked, studying Felix's face.He shrugged. "Desperation makes you consider crazy ideas. But I haven't decided yet. Thought I'd see if anyone else was interested."Nero weighed his options. Felix was right—sometimes, you had to take risks. And things only looked like they were getting worse for the city."I'll think about it," he said finally."That's all I ask," Felix replied, clapping him on the shoulder. "Stay safe, Nero."As he watched Felix disappear into the crowd, Nero couldn't shake the feeling that their conversation had set something in motion. Whether its effects would change his life for better or worse, he couldn't say.
