Chapter 74 - Crimson Crest - IV

Three months passed with the rapid, unyielding speed of weeks. Within the Gerrenthum System, the Crimson Crest was transformed into a crucible of ceaseless, driving activity. Neither the lowliest deckhands in the maintenance bays nor the highest-ranking officers on the bridge were permitted a single moment of rest. Every day was spent working to push the fleet's operational efficiency to its absolute limit, grinding away the typical complacency of a distant mid-rim posting.

The squadron's Star Destroyers were constantly regulated between active patrol duties in the outer reaches of the Gerrenthum System and grueling, stationary training cycles. For the shipboard crews, this meant endless rounds of simulated battles, emergency damage-control drills, and rapid boarding procedures. For the Stormtroopers garrisoned aboard, the days were filled with offensive planetary tactics, intensive hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship qualification, and tight corridor formation drills. Under Admiral Aaron Rysell's watchful eye, every single deployment was treated as a real combat scenario.

Rysell had taken it upon himself to personally test and evaluate his newly assigned captains, cycling his days among the various vessels of the fleet. The frequency and duration of his visits depended entirely on the level of talent and competence each officer managed to showcase.

Luca and Thara received no such visits from the Admiral. Luca was left largely to his own devices on the Leviathan, receiving only occasional, subtle hints from Rysell to help him navigate the massive vessel's ancient, complex systems. Thara was permitted to explore and master her command entirely on her own, as Rysell knew with absolute certainty that she was highly capable of mastering her ship without hand-holding. His absence from their decks was not a sign of neglect, but rather one of profound, calculated trust.

On the other hand, Captain Zed did not receive even a fraction of Rysell's attention. Instead of direct interaction, Rysell had quietly deployed over six Spectre Agents to Zed's vessel. Disguised as standard Stormtroopers, these elite operatives served as Zed's personal bodyguards while secretly acting as Rysell's eyes and ears. Rysell had already drawn up plans to strip Zed of his command the moment a viable opportunity presented itself. He knew Zed would never support a rebellion—not because of any deep ideological devotion to the Empire, but because of his burning personal hatred for Rysell.

Zed had attempted to strike back by sending a formal complaint to Imperial High Command regarding the confrontation at their last meeting. Rysell, however, had simply forwarded a cold, factual report of the incident, complete with security holorecordings and signed testimonies from nearly every officer in the room. High Command dismissed the complaint and issued Zed a formal warning instead.

Since then, Zed had done nothing but grumble, entirely unaware that his own second-in-command was actually one of Rysell's deep-cover agents. This executive officer subtly reinforced Zed's grievances in private to keep him isolated, while simultaneously working behind his back to turn the ship's crew into men loyal to the Admiral. It was an easy transition; Zed's overzealous arrogance and habit of lashing out at his crew for minor mistakes had alienated his personnel. The entire ship was quietly waiting for the day he would finally be removed.

Captain Maxim Vance received the highest number of Rysell's visits. The Admiral focused heavily on honing the young officer's tactical and strategic abilities. Vance spent dozens of hours listening to Rysell's lectures, analyzing historic, high-stakes battles from both the Clone Wars and the early days of the Empire to understand how critical breakthroughs were achieved.

Captains Henrik Ios and Kael Diram received a moderate, equal amount of attention. Both were highly competent Star Destroyer captains, but Rysell doubted either of them had the strategic depth to eventually command anything larger than a standard squadron. Still, they received regular instruction to keep their skills sharp.

The captains of the Secutor-class battlecarriers received the fewest visits of all. Their operational focus was vastly different from Rysell's direct, capital-ship specialties. Even so, Rysell provided them with crucial suggestions on starfighter coordination, optimal fleet positioning to maximize their defensive firepower, and how to best utilize the massive battlecarriers' weapons layouts.

Rysell spent the rest of his days exploring the massive corridors of the flagship alongside Captain Silas Thorne, or participating in what Hannah dryly referred to as "loyalty-bonding" exercises. This involved Rysell joining the Stormtroopers for multiple hand-to-hand sparring sessions. The Admiral was a highly capable combatant and frequently defeated the troopers, maintaining his streak until one of the Wraith Troopers decided their commanding officer was having too easy of a time. Rysell's constant, confident taunting of the men had, of course, nothing to do with the challenge.

He also regularly joined them on the firing ranges for marksmanship practice or simply stood by to observe their discipline. On the bridge, he ran intensive simulations with the crew, during which Commander Cedric became an essential asset, effectively operating as a highly capable second-in-command to Captain Thorne.

However, the individual working the hardest was pressure-tested Hannah, who was locked in a silent, high-stakes intelligence battle against Director Ysanne Isard. Hannah knew that once Rysell officially made his move, she would be completely cut off from the Imperial security network. To prepare, she was rushing to gather the last critical components of Imperial intelligence, downloading the files and securing them in the encrypted mainframes of the Sovereign.

To mask her massive data-siphoning operation, Hannah utilized several unwitting puppets within her department to throw off any potential investigators. Through these channels, she successfully obtained the detailed, classified curriculums for the Stormtrooper Academy at Calrida, the Imperial Officer Academy at the Imperial Centre, and the prestigious Anaxes War College. To protect her own position, she had already thrown ten of her less likable subordinates under the bus, framing them so perfectly that they would never even suspect she was the one who had compromised them.

Through these ruthless methods, Hannah amassed an incredible archive of intelligence. She secured detailed, accurate records of nearly every base in the Imperial Intelligence database, along with precise force compositions and fleet counts for every Moff, Grand Moff, regional Governor, Grand Admiral, and independent military unit in the galaxy.

Most importantly, she was taking steps to ensure she would still maintain some level of influence within the department even after she went dark. By gathering deeply damaging blackmail material on her fellow I.I. Chiefs and special field agents, she was establishing leverage that would allow her to extort favors from almost every major branch. Where genuine skeletons in the closet did not exist, she simply used her resources to fabricate them.

While the fleet prepared in secret, a heavy, suffocating tension was growing across the Galactic Empire. Neither the Emperor nor Lord Vader—along with the elite Royal Guard and the formidable Death Squadron—had been seen in public for several weeks. While a brief absence was not unusual, the Empire's sudden, massive diversion of funds toward an "unknown" high-priority project made it clear to everyone in the high command that something monumental was underway.

Several Grand Admirals had also quietly vanished from their designated commands, and the western Mid-Rim was being secured with an incredibly heavy military presence. Rysell's squadron was one of the units positioned to lock down this critical sector, which now saw hundreds of Imperial II-class Star Destroyers deployed to maintain a tight blockade.

The Imperial Security Bureau was conducting brutal, paranoid crackdowns on any suspected traitors within the ranks. Rysell knew his fleet would have already been subjected to an intensive loyalty audit if not for Hannah's constant data manipulation, but he also wondered how long it would take for Director Isard to see through the deception and act. He knew that making their move too early before the upcoming battle at Endor could be highly problematic, but he remained confident that they possessed the strength and preparation to survive the transition with relative ease.

The situation was further complicated when the local Gerrenthum Garrison was suddenly redeployed to the fortress world of Yag'Dhul to bolster its defenses, leaving Rysell's fleet as the sole military authority in the sector. Because of this administrative vacuum, the planetary government of Gerrenthum had been stockpiling its massive Imperial taxes, raw trade goods, and refined resources directly on the planet's surface. Rysell had no intention of leaving such a massive stockpile behind; when the time came, he fully intended to "borrow" those resources to fuel his own long-term ambitions, though that was a tactical detail for another day.

Back on Coruscant, Director Ysanne Isard found the way Hannah was attempting to cover her tracks to be almost amusing. She had always known Hannah was a highly competent agent, but she did not fully appreciate the depth of her cleverness until she began personally reviewing her files. When Isard's subordinates had first supervised Hannah's department, the young Chief had seemed like a perfectly loyal, highly efficient officer simply doing her best to serve Imperial Intelligence. But as Isard performed a deep-dive investigation into Rysell's rapid career advancement, she realized just how deep Hannah's roots actually ran.

Hannah had quietly snaked her way into positions of immense leverage, securing the personal loyalty and silence of a dozen active Imperial Intelligence agents. In particular, several cyber-warfare specialists had proven vulnerable to her manipulation, giving her a formidable, hidden network within the agency's communication channels.

Of course, Isard was far too experienced to ever reveal her full hand to her subordinates. She maintained her own private team of elite, deep-cover cyber-warfare specialists—veterans of the Separatist conflict who now served her directly to ensure their own survival. These master hackers had very quickly traced Hannah's digital footprints across the Imperial networks, linking the suspicious data queries directly to her leverage points and puppet agents.

It was remarkably easy for Isard to deduce exactly what Hannah was doing. The young chief was systematically downloading massive quantities of secure Imperial assets. While Isard did not know the exact logistics of the transfer, she suspected it was directly connected to Rysell, who was currently working at a feverish pace to turn his newly assigned fleet loyal to his person. The reports of Rysell supplying his crews with high-quality solid food, spreading tailored rumors through the lower decks, and personally training with his infantry did not escape Isard's attention. She found his hands-on approach to leadership rather charming.

At this point, Isard was fully aware that Hannah was attempting to keep a foot inside the department even after she officially defected. She recognized that Hannah's exhaustive cataloging of the Imperial military's inventory and her collection of blackmail material were designed to buy her continued influence from the shadows.

Unlike Hannah's digital footprint, which Isard's hackers could easily isolate and block, Isard chose not to interfere. Severing Hannah's connection entirely at this stage would only draw unnecessary attention and disrupt her own long-term plans.

Isard had no intention of causing unnecessary trouble for her clever disciple. Hannah's presence within Imperial Intelligence was a matter of public record, but her actual, covert level of authority was not; publicly, she appeared to hold very little real power. Losing Hannah to a future defection would not cause Isard to lose any face within the Imperial hierarchy. In fact, the absolute chaos that Hannah and her ambitious Admiral could potentially stir up in the Outer Rim would ultimately serve Isard's own interests.

As much as the old military guard loved to shout about "Order" as if it were the ultimate truth of the universe, Ysanne Isard operated by a different, far more practical set of values. To her, order was nothing more than a slow, rigid staircase that offered limited upward mobility. Chaos, however, was a dangerous, unpredictable ladder. You could never hope to climb as high or as quickly using a standard staircase as you could by navigating the shifting rungs of a ladder—unless, of course, you were already invincible.

And Ysanne Isard was an elite, world-class climber. She had no interest in stairs.
