The first answer became easier once he stopped trying to imitate whatever wording the Academy expected from students raised around military tutors. He described the reserve through its purpose rather than doctrine, explained why the escort needed enough distance to respond after the enemy committed, and spent considerably more ink on the aerial scouts than he originally intended. Their presence changed nearly everything. A formation that functioned against an enemy moving blind across the ground could become an obvious target once someone above had enough time to observe its shape and report where the vulnerable portions lay.
That much felt simple.
Apparently the Academy wanted him to explain why it was simple.
