The colossal eldritch manta ray glided silently across the darkening sky, its massive body slowly drawing closer to the kingdom. Then, without warning, its enormous mouth opened. Inside, countless grotesque creatures resembling gigantic jellyfish waited. Their bodies were composed of raw, fleshy tissue, while jagged spikes protruded from their exumbrella and long tentacles writhed beneath them, with six green, glowing eyes on top of their exumbrella and grotesque oral arms.
One after another, the abominations crawled from the creature's mouth. Their tendrils suddenly flung themselves outward as they launched into the air, swarming toward the kingdom like a living plague.
From atop the city wall, a human knight witnessed countless grotesque creatures emerging from the colossal eldritch manta ray's gaping mouth, swarming into the sky as they flew toward the kingdom. Horrified, he quickly alerted Commander Corvik and the eagle birdfolk knights.
"Commander! Aerial threats incoming!"
"All right, Eagles!" Corvik raised his sword and pointed it toward the flying monsters. "Take to the skies!"
All two hundred eagle birdfolk knights spread their wings and launched themselves into the sky, their spears raised as they charged toward the swarm of flying monsters. Commander Corvik followed, spreading his wings and shooting into the air at incredible speed, quickly overtaking his troops and taking the lead.
Darius turned to the eighty mages behind him and took command. "All mages, take your positions in the towers! Intercept anything that threatens the city! The rest of you, combine your magic and raise a barrier!"
"Yes, sir!" all the mages shouted in unison. Eighteen mages instantly teleported to the six towers along the castle wall, three to each tower, while the remaining sixty-two gathered together and combined their magic, forming a massive barrier before the city walls.
Commander Corvik and his eagle knights soared toward the swarm of flying monsters. Corvik lowered himself into a sword stance, gripping his massive steel greatsword as spring-green mana surged around the blade. He rapidly closed the distance between himself and one of the creatures.
Commander Corvik swung his greatsword at the first monster, cleaving it cleanly in two. Without slowing down, he flew toward the second and severed its tentacles and oral arms with a single stroke, sending the creature tumbling toward the ground. Corvik then accelerated toward the third monster and drove his blade straight through its exumbrella. He seized the creature by the head, spun its body around, and hurled it with tremendous force toward the fourth monster.
The remaining eagle knights joined the assault, thrusting their spears into the grotesque creatures swarming through the sky. Yet the monsters were far from defenseless. Several twisted their heads around, their spiked tentacles and oral arms suddenly lashing toward the knights. The tendrils pierced flesh and coiled around their bodies, ripping some of the eagle knights to shreds, and slammed them with their oral arms with such strength. Still, the knights fought on despite the horrifying threat, stabbing and slashing at the creatures with their spears and short swords until several monsters fell from the sky.
Commander Corvik pulled his greatsword back and thrust it forward, the blade piercing through all three creatures in a single attack. Mana surged through the weapon, causing the greatsword to expand to its full length and width as it cleaved all three monsters in half.
Commander Corvik noticed that ten of the grotesque creatures had managed to slip past him and his eagle knights. They flew toward the barrier with their spiked tentacles and grotesque oral arms raised. The mages quickly unleashed their spells, sending fireballs through the barrier and into the approaching abominations.
A few of the creatures managed to evade the fireballs and landed on the barrier, their grotesque oral arms clinging to its surface. They lowered their heads toward the barrier as the tentacles surrounding their mouths pierced through it, slowly tearing it open through sheer strength.
Darius turned toward the mages and troops and shouted. "Mages! They're about to breach the barrier! Open fire! Knights, prepare your swords!"
The knights on the city wall unsheathed their swords, and the mages launched their fireballs at the creatures that were forcibly opening the barrier. Few of them got hit by the fireballs before they could open it, but more and more of the creatures landed on the barrier, opening the barrier. One of the creatures managed to open a hole in the barrier and put its mouth in it.
The creature opened its grotesque mouth, unleashing platoons of reptilian eldritch monsters. Their bodies were covered in patches of armored shell, protecting their exoskeletons, while each possessed four sharp claws with four fingers and a tail as deadly as a blade. Four eerie green eyes glowed from their heads, and their mouths split into four fleshy sections, spreading outward like the petals of a monstrous flower.
The first platoon of eldritch grunts descended upon the knights, tearing through their ranks with their claws and blade-like tails. The knights refused to retreat, striking back with their swords while the mages supported them with spells. But before they could regain control of the battlefield, another eldritch jellyfish ripped open the barrier and unleashed a second platoon of eldritch grunts from its gaping mouth.
Darius stepped toward the second platoon of eldritch grunts, channeling an incantation through his hands. "You are not welcome in this kingdom." He brought his fists together, then suddenly spread his arms apart. Two bright orange mana swords burst forth from his hands, blazing with magical energy.
Seven eldritch grunts charged at Darius, their gaping mouths wide and their claws reaching for him. Darius took a single step forward. A brilliant blue magic circle appeared beneath his feet, launching him forward faster than the wind. In an instant, he sliced through two of the grunts. He dodged the third, severed its arm, then slipped beneath its chin and spun around, cutting the fourth across the throat and chest. Behind him, eight mana swords materialized on their own, summoned subconsciously. With a single motion, they shot forward and pierced the remaining three grunts through their heads and chests.
Darius took a brief moment to catch his breath when he noticed a fourth eldritch jellyfish breaking through the barrier. The creature opened its gaping mouth, but before it could release another platoon, a spear slammed into its head. Teba had thrown it. He immediately flew past the creature's oral arms and writhing tentacles, cutting through them with his short sword. With its tendrils severed, the creature lost its grip and slipped from the barrier.
"Darius! Have the people evacuated to the tunnels yet?" Teba flapped his wings above the barrier.
"I just received word from the mage with the civilians. The evacuation is only halfway complete!"
"They'd better move quickly! We don't know how long we can hold the line. They just keep coming!"
Meanwhile, Commander Corvik infused his greatsword with immense mana and swung it in a wide, crescent-shaped arc, cleaving through all three eldritch jellyfish. He turned toward the barrier and saw that several more had already breached it, unleashing platoons of eldritch grunts onto the city walls, where they clashed with the knights and mages.
Corvik was about to charge toward the barrier and cut down the creatures before they could breach it, but a colossal green glow suddenly illuminated the sky behind him. He turned and froze at the sight before him. The eldritch manta ray was gathering an immense amount of energy beneath its belly, its countless tendrils drawing smaller green orbs together until they merged into one gigantic sphere.
The tendrils intertwined behind the gigantic energy sphere, becoming charged with violent green electricity as they prepared to launch the devastating attack at the barrier. Corvik's eyes widened as an overwhelming sense of danger washed over him. He shouted at the top of his lungs.
"No!!!"
The gigantic energy sphere erupted into a colossal beam, obliterating the barrier in an instant. The sheer force of the attack caused the mages maintaining it to lose their concentration and fall to the ground. Darius stared in shock as he witnessed the barrier destroyed by a single blast. The beam then slammed into the city streets, erupting in a massive explosion that reduced the entire area to cinders and sent tremors throughout the kingdom.
Teba hovered above the city wall, his wings beating steadily as he stared in disbelief at the devastation below. The beam had obliterated the barrier and reduced the street to a smoldering crater. He could barely find the words to speak. "W-what...?"
With the barrier destroyed, six more eldritch jellyfish descended upon the city and landed on the streets, including one landing in the massive crater created by the blast, its grotesque mouth opening as it unleashed an entire platoon of eldritch grunts. The creatures scattered through the streets, hunting for anyone they could find.
