Chapter 10 - Battle

The clearing erupted into chaos as the dark figure, a lich, advanced with a malevolent grin. Aldrich's heart pounded in his chest, his mind racing to process the sudden turn of events. He glanced at his companions, noting their determined expressions despite the fear that flickered in their eyes.

"Stay together!" Cedric the group leader shouted, his voice cutting through the tension. "Focus your attacks on the lich!"

Aldrich tightened his grip on his wand, his thoughts a whirlwind of spells and strategies. He knew the lich was a formidable opponent, but he couldn't afford to hesitate.

"We have to break through its defenses," he thought. "Focus on weakening it first."

He raised his wand and began chanting an incantation. "Expulso!" A burst of explosive force shot from his wand, aimed directly at the lich. The spell connected, sending a shockwave through the clearing, but the lich barely flinched, its eyes glowing with dark amusement.

The lich raised a skeletal hand, and a wave of necrotic energy surged toward the group. Aldrich barely had time to react, conjuring a shimmering barrier just in time to absorb the brunt of the attack.

"Protective spells won't hold for long," he thought, gritting his teeth. "We need to counterattack."

The other wizards and witches in the group joined in, their wands flickering with spells. "Stupefy!" one shouted, sending a stunning spell toward the lich. Another cast "Incendio," summoning a torrent of fire that roared toward the undead creature.

The lich deflected the spells with a casual flick of its wrist, its dark magic countering their efforts effortlessly. It let out a low, chilling laugh that echoed through the clearing.

"Foolish humans," the lich taunted, its voice a raspy whisper. "Your magic is nothing compared to mine."

Aldrich's mind raced, searching for a way to turn the tide. "We need to disrupt its focus," he thought. "Break its concentration."

He glanced at the leader, who nodded in understanding. "Disperse and flank it," the leader commanded. "Keep it off balance!"

The group split into smaller teams, circling the lich from different angles. Aldrich moved with swift precision, his mind focused on the spells he needed. He channeled his energy into a powerful hex, aiming for the lich's vulnerable spots.

"Confringo!" he shouted, unleashing a blast of destructive magic. The spell struck the lich, causing it to stagger slightly. Aldrich's eyes narrowed in determination. "It's working," he thought. "We can weaken it."

But the lich recovered quickly, its eyes blazing with fury. It raised both hands, summoning a storm of dark energy that crackled with malevolent power. The air grew thick with the scent of decay, and Aldrich felt a chill run down his spine.

"Brace yourselves!" the leader shouted. "Here it comes!"

The lich unleashed the storm, tendrils of necrotic energy lashing out in all directions. Aldrich conjured another barrier, straining to hold it against the onslaught. He could feel the dark magic pressing against his shield, threatening to break through.

"System, analyze the lich's weaknesses," Aldrich thought desperately.

[Analyzing... The lich's phylactery is its source of immortality. Destroy it to weaken the lich significantly.]

Aldrich's eyes widened. "The phylactery," he thought. "We have to find it."

He relayed the information to the group, his voice urgent. "The lich's phylactery is its weakness! We need to find it and destroy it!"

The leader nodded, his expression grim. "Search for anything unusual. It could be hidden nearby."

Aldrich's mind raced as he scanned the clearing, his eyes searching for any clues. He noticed a faint, pulsing glow near the edge of the clearing, partially concealed by the underbrush.

"There!" he shouted, pointing to the glow. "That must be it!"

The group converged on the spot, their spells focused on the hidden phylactery. The lich roared in fury, its attention divided as it tried to defend both itself and its source of power.

"Accio phylactery!" one of the witches shouted, attempting to summon the object with a summoning charm. The glow intensified, but the phylactery remained stubbornly in place.

"Keep at it!" the leader urged. "We have to break through its defenses!"

Aldrich's mind worked furiously, trying to think of a way to weaken the lich further. "If we can disrupt its concentration, we might be able to weaken its hold on the phylactery," he thought.

He raised his wand, channeling his magic into a powerful distraction spell. "Confundo!" he shouted, sending a wave of confusion toward the lich. The spell struck true, and the lich's movements grew erratic, its control over the phylactery weakening.

"Now!" Aldrich shouted. "Attack the phylactery with everything you've got!"

The group unleashed a barrage of spells, their magic converging on the hidden object. The lich's roar of fury grew louder, and the ground shook with the force of its anger.

Aldrich's eyes locked onto the phylactery, his mind focused on the final blow. He channeled every ounce of his power into a single, devastating spell. "Reducto!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the clearing.

The spell struck the phylactery, shattering it into a thousand pieces. The lich let out a piercing scream, its form flickering and weakening. Aldrich could see the panic in its eyes, the realization that its immortality had been shattered.

"Finish it off!" the leader shouted, his voice filled with determination.

The group converged on the lich, their spells striking with unrelenting force. Aldrich felt a surge of power as he joined in, his wand crackling with energy.

"INCENDIO!" he shouted, unleashing a final, explosive blast.

The lich's form disintegrated, its dark magic dissipating into the air. The clearing fell silent, the tension slowly ebbing away.

Aldrich lowered his wand

"A lich appeared?," he thought, a frown was shown in his face. "It must be a death god."

The leader approached him, a look of gratitude in his eyes. "You were incredible," he said. "We couldn't have done it without you."

Aldrich nodded, his mind already turning to the next challenge. "We need to make sure the forest is safe," he said. "There may be more dangers lurking here."

The group nodded, their wands still at the ready.

As they made their way back to the town, Aldrich's thoughts turned to the artifact and the mysterious person or group associated with it.

[Eos, any updates on the artifact's location?] he inquired mentally.

[Analyzing recent data. Estimated location of artifact: within the deeper sections of the forest. Increased magical activity detected.]

Aldrich nodded to himself. "I'll rest for now," he said. "I need to continue the search tomorrow. The artifact is still out there, and I need to find it before anyone else does."
