"Keep moving, Aldrich!" Ryu's voice boomed across the training field.
Sweat dripped from my brow, mixing with the dirt and blood on my skin. Ryu wasn't holding back, and neither was I.
Ryu charged at me again, his fist a blur of motion. I barely had time to react, throwing up a hasty guard. CRACK! His punch connected with my forearms, sending a jolt of pain through my bones. My body buckled, but I forced myself to stay upright, gritting my teeth through the pain.
"Too slow!" Ryu barked, his eyes sharp as steel. "You've got power, but you need to toughen up that body of yours!"
I staggered back, gasping for air. My vision blurred for a moment, but I blinked it away, refusing to yield. Ryu's training had been brutal, pushing me beyond my limits every single day. But I could feel the results—my body was getting stronger, harder, more resilient.
"Not enough!" I growled to myself, steadying my stance.
Ryu rushed forward again, this time with a spinning kick aimed at my midsection. I twisted my body, narrowly avoiding the blow, and countered with a punch aimed at his ribs. He blocked it effortlessly, his arm like iron, and followed up with a backhanded slap that sent me sprawling.
I hit the ground hard, the impact knocking the wind out of me. Pain radiated from my side, but I pushed through it, forcing myself back to my feet. I was breathing heavily, my chest heaving, but I couldn't stop now. Ryu wasn't just training my body—he was testing my will, my resolve.
"Again," I muttered, wiping the blood from my mouth. "Come at me again, Ryu!"
A wide grin spread across his face, his eyes gleaming with approval. "That's more like it, lad! Let's see what you're really made of!"
He lunged at me with a series of rapid punches, each one faster and more powerful than the last. I dodged and weaved as best as I could, blocking some and taking others head-on. My body screamed in protest, but I pushed through, focusing on the rhythm of his attacks.
"Not yet!" I urged myself, my mind racing to keep up with the barrage.
I saw an opening—a slight hesitation in Ryu's movement—and I took it. I stepped in, ducking under his next punch, and slammed my fist into his side with all the strength I could muster. My hand met a wall of muscle, but I felt the impact reverberate through his body.
Ryu grunted, but his grin only widened. "Not bad, kid! Not bad at all!"
Before I could react, he spun around, his leg sweeping toward me in a wide arc. I tried to dodge, but I was too slow. His kick connected with my ribs, sending me flying backward. I crashed into the ground, pain exploding through my chest.
"Damn it…," I cursed under my breath, struggling to get up. My whole body ached, my vision swimming, but I couldn't afford to stop now. I wouldn't let this beat me. I couldn't.
"Get up, Aldrich!" Ryu's voice cut through the haze of pain. "I know you've got more fight in you!"
I clenched my fists, digging my nails into my palms. I forced myself to my knees, then to my feet, swaying unsteadily. My body felt like it was on the verge of collapse, but I wasn't about to give in. I'd come too far, endured too much, to let something as trivial as pain stop me.
"One more…," I panted, my voice barely more than a whisper. "One more round."
Ryu's expression softened slightly, but the steel in his eyes remained. "You're tougher than you look, kid."
He raised his fists, his muscles coiling like a spring. I tensed, preparing myself for the onslaught. My mind was sharp, but my body was screaming, every nerve aflame with exhaustion.
Ryu charged at me with a speed that took my breath away. His fists blurred as they rained down on me, each strike more powerful than the last. I blocked, dodged, and countered as best as I could, but I was outmatched. His strength, his speed—it was overwhelming.
"Come on, Aldrich! You can't just rely on your magic! Your body needs to be as strong as your mind!"
I knew he was right, but knowing didn't make it any easier. Each punch felt like a sledgehammer, each kick like a battering ram. I could feel my bones creaking, my muscles straining to hold together.
"Not yet…," I muttered to myself, pushing through the pain.
But then, Ryu's fist connected with my stomach, and the air was knocked out of my lungs. I doubled over, gasping for breath, and he followed up with a powerful uppercut that lifted me off my feet and sent me crashing to the ground.
"Damn it…!" I groaned, my body refusing to move. I was down, beaten, bloodied, and broken. But even then, I refused to surrender. I gritted my teeth, forcing myself to my knees. My vision was blurred, and I could barely see through the haze of pain, but I wasn't going to let this end like this.
[Aldrich] Eos's voice echoed in my mind. [Your determination has triggered a new skill. Do you wish to learn it?]
"A new skill…?" I repeated, my mind sluggish. "Yes..."
[Very well. Brace yourself, Aldrich. This will hurt.]
Before I could even process what Eos was saying, a searing pain shot through my entire body. It was as if my very bones were being reshaped, reforged in fire. My muscles tightened, and my skin felt like it was being stretched and torn. But through it all, I held on, gritting my teeth and refusing to let go.
The pain intensified, growing sharper, deeper, until I thought I would lose my mind. But then, just as suddenly as it began, it stopped. I was left panting, my body trembling, but there was something new—something powerful—coursing through my veins.
[Congratulations, Aldrich] Eos said, her voice filled with pride.
[You have learned the skill [Iron Body]
This skill will increase your physical resilience, allowing you to endure greater physical punishment. Can be evolved into something far greater with the right conditions]
"Iron Body…," I whispered, feeling the strength surge within me. My muscles were still sore, my bones still ached, but there was a newfound hardness to them—a strength that hadn't been there before.
Ryu was watching me, a knowing smile on his face. "Looks like you've awakened something, kid. That's good. But we're not done yet."
"What do you mean?" I asked, pushing myself to my feet. I could feel the difference already—my body was still battered, but it felt stronger, more durable.
"Your body just now," Ryu explained, crossing his arms. "It's looks like a technique. One that can make your body as tough as steel, maybe even tougher."
I nodded. The skill was powerful, but it was only the beginning.
"Let's do this," I said, determination burning in my eyes. "I'm ready, Ryu."
"GUAHAHAHA! That's what I like to hear!" Ryu laughed, clapping me on the back with enough force to nearly send me sprawling again. "We're gonna push that body of yours to the limit. And maybe, just maybe, you'll be able to take a punch from me without crumpling like a wet rag!"

The next few days were the hardest I'd ever endured. Ryu's training became even more intense.
Each session was a brutal. Ryu would beat me down, forcing me to take hit after hit until I thought my bones would shatter. But the Iron Body skill held firm, reinforcing my body and allowing me to endure the cruel training. It hurt—by the gods, it hurt—but I need to become stronger.
