~AMELIA~
Brittany had been asking for a visit since day six, and I had been dodging her with every trick in the book.
First, I left her message unanswered because Lily needed feeding and I used my daughter as an excuse, which was shameless but it worked. Then I told myself I would deal with it after breakfast, and breakfast came and went while I sat in the nursery convincing a baby to sleep and convincing myself I was too busy for complicated family feelings.
After that, Brittany sent another message, and then another, and by the time the third one came through, I nearly crushed my phone.
Why wouldn’t she take my silence as a hint that she wasn’t needed?
Kaden caught me reading it during lunch, and he dragged his chair closer.
“Who’s been texting you? Because I need to warn them for making you so uncomfortable.,” I couldn’t tell if he was joking or he was dead serious.
“Nobody of importance,” I replied.
“Are you sure? Because something tells me it’s Brittany.”
