Chapter 34 - System Activated

Smith's hands trembled slightly as he carefully examined the mysterious device. It was sleek and metallic, no larger than a portable hard drive, yet the intricate design suggested it was far more than just a simple storage unit. The surface was etched with unfamiliar patterns that seemed to shift subtly as he turned it in his hands, and he noticed an interface port on one side, indicating it could be connected to a computer. His heart pounded in his chest—this could be the final piece of the puzzle his father had mentioned in the video.

Eager to uncover the secrets hidden within, Smith moved quickly toward the computer. But in his haste, he didn't notice a small object lying on the floor in his path. His foot caught on it, and before he could react, he was falling forward. Instinctively, he tightened his grip on the device, determined not to let it hit the ground.

The impact of the fall sent a sharp pain shooting through his hand. Smith winced as he felt the sting of a deep cut slicing across his palm. Gritting his teeth, he forced himself to his feet, the pain in his hand almost unbearable. He glanced down and saw blood smeared across the device, the crimson stain standing out starkly against the metallic surface.

Ignoring the throbbing pain and the blood, Smith pressed on, determined to see this through. He reached the computer, quickly plugged in the device, and held his breath, waiting for something—anything—to happen.

The moment the device made contact, a sudden surge of energy erupted from it. Smith felt a powerful jolt course through his body, like an electric shock that was both excruciating and paralyzing. His muscles seized up, and for a split second, he was completely immobilized. The next thing he knew, the force of the current flung him backward, sending him crashing into the foot of the stairs with a resounding thud.

He lay there, dazed and gasping for breath, his body twitching involuntarily as the residual energy dissipated. His vision blurred, and he fought to stay conscious, the pain overwhelming. But through the haze of agony, he became aware of something else—a strange sensation pulsing through him, something foreign yet familiar.

As Smith's vision slowly cleared, he noticed something that made his breath catch in his throat. Hovering before him was a semi-transparent panel, glowing with an eerie light. It was like nothing he had ever seen before—an interface, floating in mid-air, filled with rapidly flashing symbols and codes. He shook his head, trying to dispel what he thought must be a hallucination, but the panel remained, hovering just within reach.

What had just happened? Smith's mind raced as he tried to make sense of it all. The surge of energy had felt like more than just a simple electrical shock; it was as if the device had somehow interacted with him on a deeper level, resonating with something inside him.

His gaze shifted to his wounded hand, which still throbbed painfully. He winced as he saw the blood slowly trickling from the cut, now smeared across his palm. But as he looked closer, he noticed something odd—the wound was no longer as deep as it had been moments ago. In fact, it seemed to be healing at an accelerated rate, the torn flesh knitting itself back together before his very eyes.

Smith's eyes widened in shock. This was impossible—he had no explanation for what he was witnessing. Was this somehow connected to the device, or to whatever had been passed on to him through his father's research?

The panel before him had stabilized, and the symbols and codes were now displayed clearly. As he watched, the symbols began to rearrange themselves, forming lines of text in a language he didn't recognize at first. But then, as if by some unseen force, the text began to translate itself into English. Smith's heart pounded as he read the words appearing on the screen:

"Initialization complete. Welcome, Smith Davis. System activated."

His breath caught in his throat. The device, his father's research, the strange events that had just unfolded—it all began to make a twisted kind of sense. This was no ordinary piece of technology. It was a system, possibly the very one his father had been working on, now activated and somehow integrated with him.

Smith stared at the screen, a mixture of fear and excitement swirling inside him. Whatever this system was, it had chosen him, and there was no turning back now.

Suddenly, a voice echoed in his mind, clear and authoritative. "Smith Davis," it said, the words reverberating through his thoughts, "you have been chosen to continue the legacy. Prepare for initiation."

Smith's heart raced as the room seemed to spin around him. The reality of the situation began to sink in. His father had warned him about the dangers, about the power and responsibility that came with it. And now, it was all happening.

Taking a deep breath, his hand trembling as he steadied himself. The panel in front of him flickered slightly, as if awaiting his command. He knew there was no more running, no more hiding. The system had chosen him, and now, he had to embrace his destiny.

"Commence initiation," Smith replied, his voice steady despite the fear gnawing at him. The moment the words left his mouth, the panel lit up, and a flood of information began pouring into his mind, overwhelming and unstoppable, like a dam bursting open.

The data coursed through him, filling his consciousness with knowledge, memories, and images that weren't his own. He saw flashes of alien worlds, incomprehensible technology, and glimpses of a future that felt both distant and imminent. His body trembled as he absorbed it all, the sheer volume of information threatening to tear his mind apart...he couldn't handle it and black out.
