Chapter 672: The Top Contender

As the final whistle blew, Bruno collapsed onto the turf at Anfield, exhaustion overtaking him. With both hands, he wiped the sweat from his face and closed his eyes, soaking in the thunderous cheers from the stands.

Those cheers weren't for him or his team, but Bruno still relished the electrifying atmosphere.

Manchester United couldn't take all three points at Anfield, but they also avoided a defeat. The match ended in a 3-3 draw.

After Shaqiri's brace leveled the score for Liverpool, the hosts launched an all-out assault on United. In the final ten minutes, the Red Devils were pinned back in their defensive third, barely able to push past the halfway line.

Despite Bruno's best efforts to spark counterattacks, Liverpool's relentless pressing snuffed out every attempt. Their players ran tirelessly, swarming every United player in possession, while simultaneously making off-ball runs to pull apart United's defensive structure.

Sensing the momentum shift, Mourinho made back-to-back substitutions, replacing young forwards Mbappé and Rashford with Ander Herrera and Chris Smalling.

For the last few minutes, United shifted to a 5-5-0 formation, parking the bus in front of their goal to withstand Liverpool's onslaught. Only then did they manage to stave off Liverpool's ferocious attacks.

Though they missed the chance to claim victory, Bruno felt no regrets. He had given everything and played his heart out. Liverpool was undeniably strong—while United still held a slight overall advantage, the gap between the two sides was minimal.

Leaving Anfield with a point wasn't a bad result. In fact, considering Liverpool's form, it was an achievement. Before this match, only Manchester City had managed to take a point at Anfield this season. United became the second Premier League side to do so.

As team captain, Bruno picked himself up from the pitch and immediately rallied his teammates.

United's players, including those on the bench, gathered near the corner of the stadium where their traveling fans were seated. Together, they stood in a line and bowed in unison, showing their gratitude.

It was customary to thank away fans, especially those who followed the team to hostile grounds like Anfield. These supporters were among United's most devoted.

The away fans were not disappointed. Instead, they cheered loudly, applauding and encouraging the players.

"This season's Liverpool is incredibly strong," one fan shouted, "but we're still top of the league!"

Another chimed in, "Leading by two points is huge! Keep it up, lads!"

Bruno raised his voice to rally his teammates, "Keep your heads high! We'll meet them again in the second leg. Back at Old Trafford, we'll finish the job!"

"Bruno's right," another player added. "All we need is one goal more than them, and we've won!"

"Yes, we haven't lost!"

"When we're back home, we'll crush them!"

Bruno thrust his right hand into the air. "Everyone, hands in!"

The players gathered in a circle, stacking their hands together.

"Manchester…" Bruno shouted.

"United!" the team roared in unison.

The team's camaraderie even caught the attention of Liverpool fans in the stands. On the touchline, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and his staff exchanged surprised glances.

Klopp knew what this meant. United's confidence and unity were palpable.

"They're riding high," Klopp admitted with a shake of his head.

"What do you mean?" asked Pepijn Lijnders, Klopp's assistant coach.

Klopp clarified, "We always thought United's 57-game unbeaten streak was partly luck. But the truth is, they're just that good. Their strength surpasses every other team."

After a pause, he added, "Especially Bruno. He's not only the most famous player in the world right now, but he's also the best. People call Ronaldo the third 'King of Football' after the World Cup, but if anyone's the king of today's football, it's Bruno. He has unmatched skill and extraordinary leadership."

Lijnders considered Klopp's words before nodding.

"Two months from now, at Old Trafford," Lijnders mused, "it's going to be a nightmare."

"This was a game of two halves," Klopp reflected during the post-match press conference.

"In the first half, we played exceptionally well. Even though we conceded twice, we controlled the game. But in the second half, we were tense and reactive. We tried to control possession but failed to impose ourselves."

"In a full 90-minute match, maintaining a high standard throughout is what we should strive for—not just reacting to the scoreboard."

Klopp Reflects on Draw Against United

Jürgen Klopp admitted that Liverpool needed to improve both mentally and in terms of stability after their 3-3 draw with Manchester United. He was particularly perplexed by his team's poor performance in the second half.

"We had so many advantages—strength, pace, determination, possession, attacking play. We were better than the opposition in many ways. But we still fell two goals behind and only managed to level the score by the 80th minute. This was despite playing at Anfield and in good form. Clearly, we need to reflect and learn from this."

Klopp also singled out Bruno Fernandes for praise, noting that the Portuguese midfielder was pivotal in shaping the game.

"Bruno didn't score or assist today, but he was the best player on the pitch. He was everywhere, constantly threatening Liverpool's defense."

Mourinho Echoes Klopp's Praise

José Mourinho agreed with Klopp's assessment of Bruno Fernandes.

"Bruno is the perfect player. He scores, assists, and excels defensively. He's the kind of player no coach would ever turn down because he always prioritizes the team over himself. He's the most professional player I've ever worked with, and I'm proud to be his coach."

As for the game itself, Mourinho expressed no regrets.

"Our players showed courage and determination on the road. The 3-3 scoreline reflects the nature of the match perfectly."

He also acknowledged defensive issues and inconsistency in his team's performance but chose not to dwell on them.

Champions League Round of 16 Draw

Following the intense match at Anfield, Mourinho traveled to Nyon, Switzerland, to attend the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 draw on December 17.

The draw revealed some fascinating matchups. Manchester United was paired with Schalke 04, a draw widely regarded as favorable for the English club.

United entered the knockout stage as strong favorites. They had been dominant all season, extending their Premier League unbeaten streak to 57 games and winning all six of their Champions League group matches. With 21 goals scored in the group stage—far ahead of Paris Saint-Germain's 17—United boasted the tournament's best attack.

Defensively, they conceded just two goals in six matches, tying Borussia Dortmund for the fewest goals allowed. This combination of a potent offense and a solid defense made United the bookmakers' top pick for the Champions League title.

Schalke 04, by contrast, scored just six goals in the group stage. Their advancement owed much to the relative weakness of their group, which included Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow. Facing United, Schalke was seen as an underdog, and Mourinho was expected to capitalize on this opportunity.

Other Round of 16 Fixtures

The draw also pitted two other English clubs against German opposition: Liverpool vs. Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur vs. Borussia Dortmund.

The Liverpool-Bayern matchup was considered the highlight of the Round of 16. While Bayern's squad appeared more star-studded, their performances under Niko Kovač had been inconsistent. In contrast, Liverpool remained unbeaten in the Premier League and had fought their way past Napoli to qualify for the knockout stage.

The clash featured two elite attacking tridents—Liverpool's Salah, Mané, and Firmino against Bayern's Lewandowski-led strike force. Fans eagerly anticipated this showdown, and the buzz was so intense that Bayern's website crashed as fans scrambled for tickets.

Meanwhile, the Tottenham-Dortmund tie promised a tactical battle between Mauricio Pochettino and Lucien Favre. Both teams excelled in fast-paced, counterattacking football, setting the stage for an electrifying duel. Key players like Tottenham's Alvaro Morata and Dortmund's Marco Reus were expected to play decisive roles.

Juventus vs. Atletico Madrid: Ronaldo's Return to Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Madrid—albeit against Atletico, not Real—was another highlight of the draw. Fans speculated about what this meant for the Portuguese star and the history between him and Atletico.

Ronaldo had scored 22 goals against Atletico in his career, only scoring more against Getafe (23) and Sevilla (27). Since 2014, he had led Real Madrid to four victories over Atletico, including two in Champions League finals.

The matchup also held personal significance for Mario Mandžukić, who previously played for Atletico. Though he spent just one season there, Mandžukić contributed significantly before joining Juventus, where he was repurposed as a winger under Massimiliano Allegri. Facing his former club, Mandžukić was expected to deliver a standout performance.

With both Juventus and Atletico boasting top-tier defenses—featuring stalwarts like Bonucci, Chiellini, Godín, and Giménez—the tie was expected to be a low-scoring affair, decided by which side's forwards could exploit brief defensive lapses.

Real Madrid's Youth Movement

Real Madrid drew Ajax, a team known for nurturing young talent. Under Florentino Pérez, Madrid had shifted from their "Galáctico" approach to signing emerging stars. This tie provided a perfect opportunity to assess talents like Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo.

As the Round of 16 approached, anticipation for these matchups reached fever pitch, with fans around the world eagerly awaiting the next chapter of Europe's most prestigious club competition.
