Chapter 761: The First Match of 2020
January 1, 2020
London, England – Emirates Stadium
At 8 PM, Arsenal hosted Manchester United in a highly anticipated Premier League Matchday 21 clash.
On December 20, Arsenal had appointed Mikel Arteta to replace the struggling Unai Emery as head coach. This match marked Arteta's first encounter with Manchester United as Arsenal's manager.
Over the past four seasons, Arsenal had become somewhat of a bogey team for United.
Since José Mourinho took over at United, the club had lost only five Premier League matches, two of which were against Arsenal:
May 7, 2017 – Arsenal defeated United 2–0 at the Emirates during Matchday 36, delaying United's planned title celebrations.Last season's Matchday 30 – Arsenal ended United's 68-game unbeaten league streak with another home victory.
In some ways, Arsenal had played a significant role in challenging United's dominance, almost costing them their first post-Ferguson Premier League title and later halting their remarkable unbeaten run.
However, across the last 30 meetings, the overall record was less favorable for Arsenal: just 5 wins compared to United's 19 victories and 6 draws.
Historically, in 55 Premier League encounters, United had won 27 matches, drawn 14, and lost 14, boasting a nearly 50% win rate—cementing their status as Arsenal's nemesis.
...
Notably, Bruno Fernandes did not feature in either of United's recent defeats to Arsenal. Moreover, Bruno had a perfect record against the Gunners in his career: 10 wins in 10 matches, with 8 coming since his move to Manchester United.
During these 10 matches, Bruno contributed 13 goals and 6 assists, averaging nearly 2 goal involvements per game. His performances solidified his reputation as a true "Arsenal Slayer."
Arteta's tenure had yet to bear fruit, as Arsenal's form remained lackluster:
0–0 draw at Everton in his debut match.1–1 draw at Bournemouth on Boxing Day.A 1–2 home loss to Chelsea in their final match of 2019.
Underwhelming results left Arteta under immense pressure.
Arsenal had endured a dismal November and December, managing just 1 win in 13 matches across all competitions (1W-7D-5L). With a poor 5W-9D-6L record after 20 Premier League games, Arsenal sat in 12th place on the table.
This home match against Manchester United became a must-win for Arsenal, as another loss could spell disaster for the club.
Fueled by desperation, Arsenal began the match with aggressive intent and took an early lead.
8th minute: Harry Maguire's failed offside trap allowed Sead Kolašinac to deliver a left-wing cross. The ball deflected off Victor Lindelöf and fell kindly to an unmarked Nicolas Pépé, who smashed it into the net from 10 yards out.
...
Arsenal's goal electrified the Emirates Stadium. The crowd roared with every touch and pass from their players, amplifying the intensity on the pitch.
Emboldened by the crowd, Arsenal's players showed heightened energy and aggression, pressing United high up the pitch.
Moments after United restarted play, Arsenal quickly regained possession near midfield. They began patiently recycling the ball while advancing up the field. The match's pace quickened as Arsenal pushed forward.
But Manchester United, accustomed to high-stakes matches, refused to crumble. Guided by their captain Bruno Fernandes, United gradually regained composure and launched a counteroffensive.
Bruno orchestrated a promising attack, receiving the ball on the right flank and cutting inside. Arsenal anticipated this move, with Kolašinac shadowing him tightly and Granit Xhaka retreating to assist.
Bruno deftly passed the ball to İlkay Gündoğan before making a diagonal run toward the edge of the penalty area.
Gündoğan carried the ball forward a few steps before threading a through ball into the right side of Arsenal's box.
Harry Kane, positioned near the penalty area, raced to meet the pass but was closely marked by David Luiz. Despite his best efforts to shrug off Luiz and cross the ball, the Brazilian defender held firm, forcing Kane to turn and shield the ball.
Spotting an advancing João Cancelo, Kane laid the ball off for the Portuguese fullback, who had advanced to a position parallel to the penalty arc, hugging the right sideline.
Cancelo looked set to deliver a cross but was immediately closed down by Xhaka, ensuring no easy path forward.
Cancelo hesitated. Seeing that Harry Kane hadn't returned to the center of the box yet, he made a quick decision. Cancelo stopped abruptly, cut the ball inside, and spotted Bruno running back from the front, raising his hand to call for the ball.
It was clear—Bruno saw an opportunity.
...
Bruno had indeed identified a chance.
Arsenal's defensive setup was exceptionally disciplined. Even with United's intricate movements and interchanges, Arsenal's backline remained compact and well-organized.
But no defense is flawless. Arsenal's high defensive line created vulnerabilities, particularly when Bruno drifted to the edge of the box on the right to receive Cancelo's pass. Arsenal's backline was almost entirely pressed up to the penalty spot.
With Sokratis holding position inside the penalty arc and Torreira shifting to the right, they protected the edge of the box effectively. Arsenal's defensive strategy under Arteta had clearly made strides, demonstrating a higher level of organization and intensity.
However, pressing too high was a gamble, especially against a player like Bruno, whose long-range shooting ability could wreak havoc if given space. Arsenal's defensive line was visibly wary of him, and for good reason.
Bruno received the ball and scanned the field, instantly understanding the situation.
He opted to make a lateral pass to İlkay Gündoğan, who had temporarily freed himself from Torreira's marking, before making a sharp run toward the space behind Kolasinac.
Gündoğan anticipated Bruno's intent. Just as Bruno began his run, Gündoğan delivered a precise through ball, threading it between Kolasinac and David Luiz, aimed toward the byline.
...
Bruno accelerated, leaving Kolasinac trailing in his wake as he dashed into the penalty area.
David Luiz, reacting swiftly, began to chase him but couldn't close the gap in time. Bruno reached the ball just outside the right corner of the six-yard box, with Luiz now nearly parallel to him.
At that moment, Bruno had three options:
Pass across the goal.Harry Kane was no longer offside in the center, and Rashford was arriving at the far post. However, Xhaka and Maitland-Niles were blocking the passing lanes, making this option less certain.Stop, cut back, and shoot with his left foot. This would involve trying to shake off David Luiz, but with Sokratis and others already recovering inside the box, this option was highly unlikely to yield a clear shot.Take a risk and drive toward the byline for a tight-angle shot. The shooting angle was already narrow, and pushing further would reduce it even more. If unsuccessful, this approach might draw criticism for being too selfish.
Among these, the first option was the safest and most conventional. A successful assist would bring Bruno accolades, and even a missed opportunity wouldn't invite much criticism.
But the third option—though the riskiest—offered the chance for brilliance.
...
As all these possibilities flashed through Bruno's mind in an instant, he made his decision.
Upon receiving the ball, he paused briefly before accelerating again. This sudden burst left David Luiz momentarily flat-footed, allowing Bruno to gain a step on him.
Bruno reached the ball and quickly struck it toward the goal.
Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno, stationed near the right post, crouched in preparation for the shot.
Bruno noticed a narrow gap between Leno's left foot and the post. He calculated that the ball could fit through this sliver of space—a judgment honed through countless training sessions. To Bruno, the gap was like the two poles he often used in shooting drills, and his task was simple: place the ball cleanly between them.
Without hesitation, Bruno unleashed a low, bouncing shot aimed at the near post.
Leno, highly focused, had been watching Bruno's every move. When Bruno escaped David Luiz, Leno instinctively knew the shot was coming and braced himself for a save.
What Leno didn't anticipate was Bruno's choice of the near post.
As the ball rebounded slightly off the ground, its trajectory perfectly exploited the narrow gap between Leno's left foot and the post.
Goal.
