Chapter 774: Securing the First Trophy of the Season
By late February, the pandemic had erupted across the globe. In Europe, including the UK, the situation worsened by the day. Football matches began restricting fan attendance, and rumors of league suspensions grew louder.
In this environment, Manchester United faced their first opportunity to claim a trophy in 2020.
The Final at Wembley
On March 1, the 2019-2020 English League Cup Final kicked off at Wembley Stadium, with Manchester United taking on Aston Villa.
Just three minutes into the match, Aston Villa's manager, Dean Smith, was already restless. Watching United's relentless pressure, he quickly realized he had fallen into a trap.
Before the match, José Mourinho had hinted that United's midweek game against Real Madrid had left his squad fatigued, suggesting they would rotate heavily and adopt a conservative approach.
Hearing this, Smith devised an aggressive plan. He deployed a bold 3-4-3 formation, aiming to overwhelm United early and secure the trophy.
But as soon as the match began, United went straight on the offensive, consistently pressing Villa's goal.
"Where's the cautious approach? This is an ambush!" Smith muttered on the sidelines, visibly frustrated.
Mourinho's Masterstroke
Mourinho hadn't completely lied about his lineup. United fielded a rotated squad, with key changes across the pitch. Only Bruno Fernandes and the regular backline remained from the starting XI that faced Real Madrid.
Upfront, McTominay partnered Greenwood and Mahrez, while midfield featured Bruno, Gündoğan, and young Jude Bellingham. Argentine goalkeeper Romero took charge between the posts.
Despite his initial plan to start cautiously, Mourinho had changed tactics the moment he saw Villa's lineup. Smith's aggressive 3-4-3 was a glaringly offensive formation, leaving midfield and defense vulnerable. Mourinho signaled for Bruno Fernandes to switch to the third pre-planned strategy: immediate high-pressure attack.
Early Strike
United's relentless attack soon bore fruit. Villa's goalkeeper Nyland attempted a quick throw to spark a counterattack, but the move was intercepted.
In midfield, McTominay controlled a high ball with a back-header, flicking it toward Bruno Fernandes, who darted forward.
"Stop him!" Smith shouted desperately.
Villa defender Matt Targett rushed to intercept, but Bruno effortlessly faked right, then left, bursting past with a burst of speed.
Cheers erupted from the United section.
"Go, Bruno!"
"You've got this!"
Villa's center-back Engels stepped up to block but was left flat-footed as Bruno's quick cut inside left him in the dust. Now in the box, Bruno faced only the goalkeeper. With a deft sidestep, he rounded Nyland and calmly slotted the ball into the empty net.
1-0 to Manchester United in the fifth minute.
The United fans erupted in celebration, their chants echoing through Wembley. Among them, a young boy jumped up and down, fists clenched. "Yes! That's it! Give them another, and they'll crumble!"
The Chess Match Begins
"Fantastic work, boys!" Mourinho clapped from the sidelines as he high-fived Bruno.
Back in his seat, Mourinho exhaled deeply. The early goal shifted the game in United's favor, forcing Villa to chase.
Across the field, Dean Smith was livid, pacing furiously. "Damn it! That sneaky bastard tricked me!" he fumed, realizing Mourinho had outwitted him.
Yet Smith couldn't afford to dwell. He gestured wildly, urging his team forward.
"Attack! Attack! Overwhelm them!"
Smith's only option now was an all-out assault, banking on outscoring United with his attacking lineup.
Villa's Bold Approach
"Dean Smith's team is showing immense courage and attacking intent," remarked commentator Andy Gray. "It's rare to see a manager go toe-to-toe like this against Mourinho's United."
Villa faithfully executed their manager's instructions, pushing forward.
Forward Samatta held up the ball but was immediately closed down by Harry Maguire, forcing him to lay it off to Nakamba.
United's Tactical Mastery
Despite Villa's spirited attempts, United's defense held firm. The midfield trio of Bruno, Gündoğan, and Bellingham, supported by McTominay dropping deep, provided an impenetrable shield.
Meanwhile, United's counterattacks continued to exploit Villa's exposed backline. Bruno, orchestrating play with his usual flair, repeatedly found gaps to launch Greenwood and Mahrez on the flanks.
By halftime, Villa's frustration was evident. The score remained 1-0, and their initial energy began to wane.
Securing the Trophy
In the second half, Mourinho made strategic adjustments to maintain control. United continued to dominate possession, creating multiple chances.
In the 72nd minute, Greenwood sealed the game. After a slick one-two with Bruno, the young forward unleashed a clinical finish past Nyland, making it 2-0.
Wembley erupted as United fans celebrated the inevitable victory.
When the final whistle blew, Mourinho embraced his coaching staff, his satisfaction palpable. Manchester United had claimed the 2020 English League Cup, securing their first trophy of the season.
Post-Match Reactions
At the post-match press conference, Mourinho praised his team's preparation and execution.
"This was a fantastic performance. Every player gave their all, and I'm immensely proud of them," he said.
Meanwhile, Dean Smith admitted his frustration. "We were too naïve in the opening stages and paid the price against a top-quality side like United."
The League Cup victory provided Manchester United with a confidence boost amid a grueling season. As the pandemic loomed large, this trophy was a bright moment, a symbol of their resilience and ambition.
Nakamba controlled the ball but was immediately pressured by a Manchester United player sticking close. Unable to shake off the defender, he shielded the ball and tried to find a forward passing option.
On the sidelines, José Mourinho smirked. United's defensive intensity and aggression were clearly unsettling their opponents.
Out of options, Nakamba attempted a back pass, but Jude Bellingham suddenly surged forward, startling him. His rushed pass lacked power, and Gündoğan, who had been lying in wait, executed a perfect sliding tackle.
"Beautiful tackle!"
Gündoğan intercepted the ball and swept it into his path with one hand on the ground, then quickly passed it to Mahrez, who in turn sent it out wide to Bruno Fernandes.
Bruno's Brilliance
The sight of Bruno Fernandes on the ball immediately put Aston Villa on high alert. Their captain, Jack Grealish, sprinted over to defend, but as an attack-minded player, Grealish's defensive efforts were superficial at best.
"Brilliant!"
Bruno performed a quick drag-back turn and accelerated down the sideline, effortlessly bypassing Grealish. As Grealish tried to recover, Bruno calmly passed to Greenwood, who had moved to support him.
After making the pass, Bruno sprinted forward. Greenwood astutely returned the ball with a one-two, setting Bruno free once again.
This time, Villa's defender Targett held his position, wary of being dribbled past. However, Bruno faked a move to the left, prompting Targett to shift slightly, and then nutmegged him with a deft touch.
"Wow! Bruno's as nimble as a rabbit … and now the rabbit is on the loose!"
Bruno accelerated, reclaiming the ball and leaving Villa's defense in disarray. Tyrone Mings, the last man back, scrambled to cover.
Bruno shaped to shoot, and Mings extended his leg to block, but Bruno pulled the ball back, sidestepped, and slipped past him with a light touch.
"He's through! One-on-one!"
A Perfect Assist
Mourinho was already on the edge of his seat, fists clenched as he watched intently.
Villa's goalkeeper Nyland rushed off his line, anticipating a chip shot, but Bruno surprised everyone with a pass.
The ball rolled left to an unmarked Greenwood, who easily broke free from Engels and slotted it into the open net.
"Bruno's through … he passes … Greenwood! Greenwood!! GREENWOOD!!!"
"GOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLL!!! A calm finish! It's the second goal! Bruno assists Greenwood, and Manchester United now lead Aston Villa 2–0!"
As the commentators roared, the United fans in the stands erupted. When Bruno nutmegged Targett, they were already shouting. When he feinted past Mings and delivered the pass, they were celebrating. By the time Greenwood scored, the noise reached its peak.
"Glory, glory, Man United!"
Villa's Collapse
Aston Villa's players looked helpless after conceding. Their coach, Dean Smith, had hoped to outgun United's rotated squad and win Villa's sixth League Cup title, but his ultra-attacking setup left his midfield exposed.
Once the ball reached Bruno's feet, the result was almost inevitable. His exceptional technique and speed wreaked havoc, dismantling Villa's defense and creating the perfect scoring opportunity.
Mourinho jumped from his seat, punching the air in triumph.
"Two goals up! It's all under control now!"
On the other hand, Smith was furious, punching the dugout roof twice before wincing in pain. "Damn it!" he hissed, shaking his sore fist.
The Nail in the Coffin
Greenwood's goal shattered Villa's morale. Despite Smith's frantic instructions from the touchline, his team couldn't regain their footing.
Just before halftime, United capitalized on a set piece. Maguire's towering header extended the lead to 3–0.
Early in the second half, Bruno was fouled in the box, earning a penalty. He stepped up and calmly converted, making it 4–0.
Mourinho stood on the sideline, applauding with a satisfied smile. He knew the game was over.
Villa's captain, Grealish, managed a consolation goal in the 80th minute, but it was too little, too late.
When McTominay's late attempt missed the target, the referee's whistle blew, signaling the end of the match.
United Celebrate
"It's over! It's all over!" the MUTV commentator cheered.
While the League Cup might not carry the prestige of the Premier League or Champions League, or even the FA Cup, winning any official trophy was still cause for celebration.
United's players celebrated joyfully on the pitch, with Bruno among them. For the Portuguese captain, this was a special moment.
The League Cup was Bruno's first trophy since joining Manchester United. Although he was part of the squad that won the Community Shield in 2016, he hadn't been included in the matchday squad, making this his first major triumph with the club.
This was also Bruno's third League Cup title, following victories in 2017 and 2018.
Mourinho's men lifted the trophy at Wembley, their fans singing in unison. It was a perfect start to a challenging year, and a statement of intent for the battles to come.
