Karn didn't hesitate. He scaled a jagged ridge in two clean leaps, Vajranak right behind him. The soldiers followed cautiously.
When Karn reached the top, he stopped.
The soldiers reached him seconds later—and froze in horror.
The officer near Karn hesitated and asked "They say you're heading to the Human War Lands?"
Karn nodded, adjusting the spear's weight on his shoulder. "I need to fight stronger foes. Monsters. Beasts that push me closer to my parents' realm."
The officer swallowed. "Then may the ancestors guide your spear, Master Karn. May you return stronger still."
Karn turned away without another word, move forward to his journey. Overhead, the first stars winked to life in the dusky sky, watching him with cold, patient eyes.
A bitter wind swept across the plains beyond, carrying distant echoes of roars, howls, and the rumble of great beasts moving under moonlight.
