The ominous crackling of the Toxic Cloud filled the air, the choking miasma swirling in unpredictable waves as Six pulled Rebecca to her feet. His HUD flickered with warnings, and his mind raced, instantly analyzing the rising threat around them.
"No time. The Ghost People are coming."
His Observation Haki flared, a cold spike of danger lanced through his brain — sharp, precise, undeniable. The hairs on his neck stood up as the first signs of movement appeared from the fog. At first, it was just a handful of figures—faint, shifting shapes, slowly materializing through the haze.
But then, like a ripple spreading across water, they multiplied. The Ghost People, their hollow faces half-masked by rags, came stumbling forward, their inhuman, twisted forms gliding through the air with unnatural fluidity.
"Six…"
Rebecca's voice was strained, but her grip on her weapon was firm. Her armor was visibly battered, but she was far from done. Her HUD flashed red with movement markers, just as Six's warning finalized in his head:
"Four… no, eight… no—shit—twenty-six…"
"Babe, how many of them are there?"
Six's Observation Haki showed the numbers climbing rapidly—4… 8… 14… 26… and finally more than 90. His mind raced through his options, but there were few.
Their Power Armor was compromised from the fight with Maine, and the Toxic Cloud was taking a heavier toll on Six's suit, slowly eroding its integrity. The armor was getting weaker by the second, and he couldn't afford to wait.
"We don't have time."
He muttered under his breath.
"Get ready."
The Ghost People emerged like wraiths from the shifting crimson fog—silent at first, but their numbers swelling like a tide of rot. Their glowing eyes flickered, their cosmic knives glinted wet in the oppressive haze, and their suits, still pumping the toxic cloud through their systems, made them more monster than man.
Six's own Power Armor screamed with damage alerts. The toxic cloud was chewing through his plating now, every breath from his filtration system fighting a losing battle. Rebecca's suit fared slightly better, but they both knew—this was turning into a meat grinder.
"Rebecca—shoot. Now."
His voice dropped into that deadly, no-nonsense register. Even wounded, even with her visor cracked and her lip bleeding, Rebecca caught the tone immediately and scrambled to her feet.
"Come get some you Fuckers!"
Rebecca barked, raising her rifle.
The first four Ghost People leapt forward like feral animals. Six fired his sidearm—his Varis rifle had been damaged during the fight with Maine. Each of his shots burst heads and limbs, but even as the bodies fell, they began stitching themselves back together, flesh reknitting, bones resetting.
"Aim for the limbs! Tear them apart!"
Six shouted, already snapping his Liberator blade free. He lunged forward, decapitating one Ghost with a brutal upward slash, then kicked another hard enough to send it sprawling.
Six's hands tightened on his weapon. Rebecca did the same, her knuckles white as she gripped her Punisher. She had learned the hard way how hard it was to kill the Ghost People. They looked like people but were the hardest creatures to kill—they could recover from almost any wound, even if they were shredded into pieces.
Every shot counted—Rebecca shot out kneecaps and elbows, then dashed forward to finish them off with her chainsaw sword, severing tendons and limbs so they couldn't crawl back too quickly.
But more came. Dozens. They poured from broken windows, from sewer grates, from the fog itself—silent, relentless, regenerating so long as the Cloud sustained them.
"Dammit, they're count is still increasing to ninety-plus!"
Six growled, swinging his blade and ripping through the neck of another attacker. His armor groaned as another Ghost latched onto his back, trying to claw through his cracked plating.
"They just keep coming!"
Rebecca panted, crushing a Ghost's skull underfoot before it could reattach its severed arm.
Six slammed his back against a wall, crushing the Ghost against stone, then gutted it with his blade.
"We can't win this by attrition. We have to find higher ground, they can't survive outside the cloud!"
He glanced at her.
"Focus on the ones closest to us. I'll handle the rest. We can't let them swarm us. Keep them back. Shoot to dismember."
Rebecca nodded, her voice steady despite the rising pressure.
"Got it."
Another wave came, this time larger—their numbers were surging, almost like the Cloud itself was driving them into a frenzy.
The Ghost People came in with terrifying speed, darting forward with almost supernatural agility, but Six was ready. His Power Armor continued to whine as he charged forward, sending out bursts of gunfire from his sidearm, the deadly rounds cutting through the first few figures with surgical precision.
However, as expected, the Ghost People recovered almost immediately from their wounds, their eerie hollow faces twitching and spasming before they rose again, seemingly undeterred by the damage.
Rebecca was already breathing hard, her voice raw.
"Six, our suits—if they breach—"
"I know."
His voice was grim. His HUD showed critical damage to his chestplate, and his filter was beginning to fail.
But retreat wasn't an option—not yet.
"Shit!"
Rebecca growled, firing her Punisher in Minigun mode at the approaching figures. Her spray of gunfire was devastating, but they didn't stop the Ghost People from getting back up.
Six quickly assessed the situation and realized that they were going to be overwhelmed by their numbers soon. Simply taking down a few at a time wasn't enough. They all had to be destroyed—completely at once.
With a roar of defiance, he slammed into the next wave of Ghost People. His Liberator tearing into their bodies, cutting them down until chunks were left, and severed body parts pinned to walls.
Rebecca tore into the oncoming horde with relentless fury. Her Punisher in Tesla cannon mode hummed as she fired, sending plasma beams into the writhing forms of the Ghost People, each shot detonating their bodies in bursts of blue flames.
But the horde didn't stop. More and more emerged from the cloud, their decayed figures indistinguishable from the toxic haze that shrouded them.
"We need more time!"
Six shouted, his voice grim. His Power Armor was taking hits now, the protective plating slowly cracking as the toxic cloud continued to eat away at it.
"I don't know how long we can keep this up."
Rebecca grunted, her breath coming in short gasps as she focused on dismembering the advancing Ghost People.
Suddenly, one of the Ghost People lunged at Six, its cosmic knife reaching for his exposed damaged armor. He reacted just in time, ducking under its slash and delivering a brutal punch to its midsection, splitting it open and sending it flying back into the mass.
"Focus!"
Six snapped, barely able to hear over the chaos. His HUD was flashing red with more system warnings. Rebecca's suit was barely holding up, but his own was nearly gone.
But they couldn't afford to stop. More Ghost People kept emerging, their nearly immortal bodies becoming increasingly difficult to destroy as their recovery times shortened with each encounter.
"Keep pushing, Rebecca! We need to thin them out or we're done for."
Six yelled, spinning around to take down another Ghost Person.
As the air around them thickened with the toxic cloud, Six realized there was no end in sight. They were surrounded, and their resources were running low. It was a race against time.
