He was well aware that these were essential tools for entering the cave, because oxygen fuels fire. If the torch goes out, it means there's no oxygen and they can't simply enter.
So even if the Sand Beast liked fire, they still had to keep them lit. This was for safety reasons and couldn't be casually changed.
But now it was clear that the Sand Beast didn't dare approach them. After all, there was nothing special about the path ahead unless there were really some special traps inside.
But in such an environment, the Sand Beast could survive and have survived for so long, at least ensuring they have a source of food. So there was no need to pounce on any living thing recklessly, being cautious made sense.
