Chapter 415: Knowing How Far to Go

Did Sharif know Bai Luo?

He actually did.

Although he couldn't remember his name, the man had left an unforgettable impression on him.

The story went back quite a while.

Before Bai Luo became a Harbinger, he had spent some time in Sumeru.

That was when Sharif first met him.

At the time, Sharif was just a hotheaded youth from the desert, tagging along with some older members of the Eremites.

Later, under the guidance of those elders, their group was hired by a generous client from Snezhnaya.

The person who hired them was known as the Doctor.

However, throughout the entire arrangement, Sharif never actually met this Doctor.

The one who dealt with them was instead a Sumeru native known as the Missionary.

In Sharif's eyes, his elders were already fierce and intimidating men.

Yet those same fierce individuals couldn't even lift their heads when being scolded by the Missionary.

That naturally made him curious about the man's identity.

Besides the Missionary, another person at his side also caught Sharif's attention.

That man always wore a white mask.

From their conversations, Sharif could tell that the Missionary was technically the man's superior.

Yet despite the Missionary's harsh attitude toward everyone else, he never once lost his temper with him.

In fact, he seemed to treat him with a certain degree of respect.

At the time, Sharif's elders had even asked the Missionary about the masked man's background.

The answer he received remained etched in his memory to this day.

"Him? Just a debt collector."

A debt collector?

After spending time around these people from Snezhnaya, Sharif had learned about positions such as Pyro Agents.

But what exactly was a debt collector?

Eventually, he would understand the origin of that title.

Back then, after earning a considerable amount of Mora working under the Missionary, he happily returned home intending to marry the second daughter of old Kuli, the village elder.

To his shock, he discovered that the woman who had once promised to marry him had already married another man.

Not only was she carrying a chubby baby in her arms, but she was pregnant with another child as well.

Judging by the timing, she had already been involved with that man before Sharif had even left.

The problem was...

Sharif had never even touched her.

They hadn't so much as held hands.

Heartbroken, he decided to return and earn more Mora before leaving that painful place forever and settling down in a larger city.

Unexpectedly, when he returned, he found that all of his elders and companions had vanished.

He's unable to contact any of them.

He eventually tracked down information about one companion.

But when he arrived at the man's home, he found a large crowd gathered outside.

Apparently, the official explanation was that the man had accidentally chopped off his own head while cutting vegetables.

Yeah, right.

Who would believe that nonsense?

Panicked, Sharif scanned the crowd.

And there he was.

That familiar figure.

This time the man wasn't wearing a mask, but his profile—so different from that of a typical Sumeru native—was unforgettable.

"Him? Just a debt collector."

The Missionary's words echoed endlessly in Sharif's mind.

Only then did he finally understand what that title truly meant.

As he secretly watched the man, the man seemed to sense his gaze.

He turned his head.

And gave Sharif a warm, friendly smile.

That smile became a nightmare that haunted him for years.

Afterward, he fled the desert entirely.

Taking all of his Mora with him, he settled near Avidya Forest and remained there until now.

Yet he never could have imagined that this so-called debt collector would pursue him all the way to Dragonspine.

But—

"Who are you?"

Bai Luo stared at Sharif with complete confusion.

He had indeed been to Sumeru and stayed there for some time.

But just as many people struggle to distinguish unfamiliar foreign faces, all Eremites looked more or less the same to him.

There was no way he would remember a minor mercenary.

If Bai Luo knew what Sharif was thinking, he would probably cry foul.

During his time in Sumeru, he had been focused entirely on research.

He hadn't participated in any killing operations whatsoever.

He had even found time to rescue a little girl named Collei.

As for the disappearance of Sharif's elders...

It couldn't be said that the Fatui were completely uninvolved.

But Bai Luo himself was genuinely innocent.

His presence at the scene that day had nothing to do with the saying, "The murderer always returns to the scene of the crime."

It was simply a reflection of Bai Luo's personality.

After all, what kind of person was Bai Luo?

A troublemaker who lived for entertainment.

When he heard that someone in town had supposedly chopped off his own head while cooking, there was no way he was going to miss such an amusing spectacle.

Back then, he had also noticed a young man from Sumeru secretly watching him.

However, during his time in Sumeru, many locals had stared at him because of his distinctly foreign-looking features, so he hadn't paid much attention to Sharif's gaze.

He had simply assumed the young man was curious about his appearance, just like everyone else.

That was why he had given him a friendly smile.

He had never imagined it would leave such deep psychological trauma.

"By the way, what's the story behind those wounds?"

After reassuring Silver—who clearly didn't need any reassurance—Bai Luo walked over to Sharif, who was still clinging to life, and asked.

"???"

You're asking me?

You actually have the nerve to ask me?

Don't you know exactly how they got there?

You stabbed them, you lunatic!

"I'm not talking about the ones I just made. I mean the older scars."

Perhaps sensing the resentment radiating from Sharif, Bai Luo clarified.

At first he hadn't noticed.

Later, however, he realized that nearly every Eremite present had an old scar on their lower back.

And those scars looked very familiar.

"In Gandharva Ville. A little brat from Mondstadt left them."

Sharif didn't bother hiding the truth and answered honestly.

Anyone who asked around Avidya Forest would eventually hear stories about the annoying little brat in Gandharva Ville who specialized in stabbing people in the kidneys.

It wasn't exactly a secret worth keeping.

"A kid from Mondstadt..."

Now Bai Luo was certain.

These Eremites from Sumeru had definitely suffered at Collei's hands.

However—

"That child really has no sense of moderation. She actually stabbed someone in the kidney."

"..."

Sharif had been about to say that Bai Luo wasn't exactly any better.

But the next sentence nearly made him cough up blood.

"I've told her so many times: if you're going to stab someone, stab both kidneys. Otherwise there's still a chance they'll be saved. Yet I always end up having to clean up after her."

Casually twirling his dagger, Bai Luo spoke in the disappointed tone of a teacher lamenting an underperforming student.

Even Silver, who was still hugging the Whopperflower nearby and refusing to let go, could feel the overwhelming malice hidden within those words.
