Chapter 417: A Potion That Can Turn People into Cats

Glug... glug...

Inside the cave, Silver had begun attempting experiments on his own.

Unlike Bai Luo, who followed alchemy books step by step, Silver merely skimmed through the material once before immediately starting to prepare the ingredients.

He worked with a level of familiarity that made it seem as though he had performed these procedures countless times before.

Even his measurements were remarkably precise.

"So this is what talent looks like?"

Watching the scene unfold, Bai Luo could only sigh in admiration.

Then again, Silver was a creation of Gold.

This was the sort of innate talent that ordinary people simply couldn't hope to match.

"Wh... why?"

Silver's speech had improved significantly compared to before, though he still stumbled over his words from time to time.

Having spent enough time with him, Bai Luo could already infer the meaning behind Silver's brief and fragmented questions.

After returning to the cave, Silver had originally wanted to study the Whopperflower.

The reason he had fought so hard to protect it was precisely because he wanted to research the anatomy of this unusual monster.

The Whopperflower's ability to disguise itself as other lifeforms fascinated him tremendously.

"Don't worry about why. Just make it. It's not exactly difficult for you, is it?"

Yawning as he flipped through one of the alchemy books Silver had already read, Bai Luo replied casually.

Deep down, there was a regret that had bothered him for quite some time.

Lisa had moved her alchemy workshop into the library inside the Knights of Favonius headquarters.

As a result, stealing things from her had become extremely inconvenient.

That, in turn, had left him chronically short on one particular item:

The potion that could turn people into cats.

Coincidentally, while browsing through Albedo's collection of alchemy books, he had stumbled upon something familiar.

Potions.

And among those records was the very recipe for the cat-transformation potion.

Without hesitation, he had instructed Vasily to contact Anastasia and purchase a large quantity of the required ingredients under the name of Pantalone.

His plan was simple:

Have Silver mass-produce the potion.

That way, he would have an endless supply.

Hehe.

He couldn't help wondering what would happen if he poured it onto Morax.

"..."

Sensing Bai Luo's malicious sense of humor, Silver could only shake his head and sigh before returning to his work.

Meanwhile, Bai Luo picked up a large piece of juicy roasted meat and headed deeper into the cave.

There, hidden within the depths, was a smaller chamber that Bai Luo had personally carved out.

The Whopperflower they had captured alive was currently being kept inside.

Unlike Slimes, Whopperflowers were extraordinarily difficult to tame.

Even simply keeping one imprisoned was no easy task.

To ensure it couldn't escape, Bai Luo had stretched steel wires throughout the entire chamber.

If the creature attempted to burrow underground—

Well, tonight's dinner would become considerably more luxurious.

Ever since bringing it back, Bai Luo had repeatedly tried to trick the Whopperflower into doing exactly that.

Unfortunately, the creature seemed to have sensed his sinister intentions and refused to take the bait.

It remained crouched in place like an ordinary plant.

Sometimes it even swayed gently, mimicking the motion of vegetation moving in the wind.

"Hey there, little kitty. Want some?"

Holding up the roasted meat, Bai Luo tempted the Whopperflower.

The creature, however, showed absolutely no reaction.

While Bai Luo continued teasing the Whopperflower, Silver's experiment finally made some progress.

Gurgle...

After collecting an entire bottle of potion, Silver shifted his gaze toward an experimental table in the corner.

Lying there was Sharif, his face filled with exhaustion.

Originally, Bai Luo had intended to leave him behind on Dragonspine and let fate decide his survival.

As long as someone happened to pass by, there was a good chance he would be rescued.

However, at Silver's suggestion, they had brought him back instead.

The main reason was simple.

Silver wanted someone to practice talking with.

Otherwise, learning to hold a fluent conversation with other people would be incredibly difficult for him.

As for why Silver didn't practice speaking with Bai Luo?

Well...

Sometimes Bai Luo could say things that warmed a person's heart.

Most of the time, however, he would make people so angry they wanted to brawl the guy.

For the sake of his own mental health, Silver chose Sharif instead.

After bringing Sharif back, Silver had connected him to an alchemical apparatus that temporarily replaced the function of his kidneys, allowing him to stay alive.

It wasn't a long-term solution, but Silver didn't need him to live that long.

As long as he could serve as a conversation partner, that was enough.

And now, Silver had another idea.

After removing the alchemical equipment restraining Sharif on the operating table, he poured the freshly prepared potion over him.

"Ugh..."

The icy sensation of the alchemical liquid made Sharif gasp sharply.

Moments later, bloodshot veins spread throughout his eyes.

"WAAAAAAAHHHH!"

Fur with traces of crimson rapidly sprouted across his body.

At the same time, his fangs lengthened and his fingernails sharpened into claws.

Unlike Diluc, who had shrunk after being exposed to the potion, Sharif showed no signs of becoming smaller.

Instead, his muscles expanded rapidly, swelling like an inflating balloon.

The wires restraining him remained intact.

However, the operating table itself shattered into several pieces under the force of his struggles.

"ROOOAAAR!"

Letting out a beast-like howl, the transformed Sharif lunged directly at Silver.

Silver had already prepared himself to subdue the man.

Before he could act, however, a ghostlike figure appeared behind Sharif.

BANG!

Bai Luo's weapon slammed into Sharif's forehead.

The tremendous force knocked several teeth loose on the spot.

Under that single strike, the berserk Sharif immediately lost consciousness.

"What happened?"

Looking at Sharif—who now resembled some sort of tiger-like beast—Bai Luo asked.

Had Silver made a mistake while preparing the potion?

Or perhaps the transformation varied from person to person?

After all, during his time in Sumeru, Bai Luo had seen animals that looked somewhat similar.

"No... mistake."

As a creation of Gold, Silver had complete confidence in himself.

There had been absolutely nothing wrong with the potion he prepared.

If dosage wasn't the issue, then the problem had to originate either from Sharif himself, or from the ingredients.

As for Sharif, Silver had already thoroughly examined his body while installing the alchemical equipment.

He was an entirely ordinary Sumeru native.

No special bloodline.

No unusual traits.

That left only one possibility.

The ingredients.

After entrusting Sharif to Bai Luo's supervision, Silver returned to the alchemy table and carefully inspected everything he had used.

Every ingredient checked out.

Everything was normal.

Except for one thing.

Water.

The water he had used wasn't the drinking water supplied by the Fatui.

Instead, it came from melted snow collected outside the cave.

But that didn't make sense either.

He had consumed this snow before.

Aside from having a somewhat unusual taste, it had never caused any strange symptoms.

He hadn't even suffered a stomachache.

How could that be...?

Wait.

If he could consume it without experiencing any effects...

Then did that mean—

Suddenly realizing something, Silver rushed toward the cave entrance.

He looked up at the towering cliffs surrounding them.

Above him, massive rib-like structures stretched across the sky like gigantic stone pillars, covering the entire mountainside.

Silver stared at them in silence.

"Is this because of Durin?"

The enormous dragon's remains loomed overhead.

And for the first time, Silver began to suspect that the strange mutation wasn't caused by the potion at all, but by the lingering influence of Durin's corrupted blood that had seeped into Dragonspine itself.
