Chapter 649 - Chapter 649: A New Form of Entertainment

The star-studded Grammy Awards officially kicked off at 8 p.m. during prime time. With no work scheduled, Naomi Watts watched the live broadcast together with Jennifer Connelly, who was at home taking care of her children.

"Ivanka said that earlier in the VIP lounge, a female rapper named Nicki Minaj said she wanted to sleep with Gilbert."

Jennifer Connelly was startled. "Huh? What?"

"Yep, you didn't hear wrong."

Jennifer Connelly was speechless. "Oh my God… Did she say that publicly?"

"Of course." Naomi Watts nodded.

Jennifer Connelly immediately searched the name "Nicki Minaj" on her laptop and found photos of a woman with an exaggerated figure.

"Uh… well… how do I even comment? I don't think Gilbert would like a woman like that."

"That's true. Among us, the ones with the best figures are probably you and Michelle!"

"What? No way, you look great too!"

"Really great?"

"Of course. If you don't believe me, we can compare."

And so the two women actually compared, ultimately concluding that Jennifer Connelly held a slight advantage. Naomi Watts was a bit shorter, while Jennifer Connelly had the ideal height and very balanced proportions.

On the TV, the Grammy ceremony continued. This year's host was Ellen DeGeneres, host of The Ellen Show.

It was worth mentioning that Ellen DeGeneres was also this year's Oscar host. She was gay and had publicly announced her relationship earlier than even Jodie Foster.

As a popular host, Ellen DeGeneres had long been second only to Oprah Winfrey, yet she remained a frequent host for major award ceremonies.

In contrast, although Oprah had tremendous influence, awards like the Oscars or the Grammys rarely invited her.

Every awards ceremony began with a host's comedic monologue, and tonight was no exception.

Ellen DeGeneres joked about every high-profile guest present, including Gilbert.

"I heard Gilbert is attending tonight with our punk princess, Miss Lavigne. Rumor has it that Miss Lavigne is your new girlfriend.

Wow, I'm so jealous!"

It was unclear whether she was jealous of Gilbert or of Avril Lavigne, but the occasion called for humor.

After the jokes, the ceremony officially began, interspersed with spectacular performances.

A singer named Mary J. Blige even teased Gilbert, grabbing the microphone stand and treating him like a pole, performing a fiery dance.

This irritated Avril Lavigne so much that she immediately stepped in front of the two.

To be honest, Gilbert didn't pay much attention to pop music—he didn't recognize most of the performers. At best, he might nod politely. However, when one particular person went onstage, Gilbert did exchange a few words about him.

"That's the guy who keeps trying to pursue you?"

"Yes," Avril Lavigne nodded. "He's so annoying. And he even won Best Rap Artist. It's not fair."

"So would you rather Nicki Minaj win, or him?" Gilbert asked with a grin.

Avril Lavigne hesitated for a long moment, then gave up entirely. "Fine, I'll just become a rapper."

Clearly, she didn't like either of them. Her pouty expression was quite adorable.

The broadcast knew exactly who the night's focus was, so the camera repeatedly cut to Gilbert. Each time, it caught him whispering with Avril Lavigne.

Avril Lavigne's fans were heartbroken. Why? Why would our punk princess like a playboy like him? How many girlfriends has he had already?

Ugh, the problem must be the world, not us.

During the mid-show performances, Avril Lavigne took the stage to sing the theme song for EdgeRunners, as well as one of the insert songs. With the mixed trailer footage playing behind her, it effectively served as an advertisement for EdgeRunners.

Since she was already attending the Grammys, getting some promotion out of it was worthwhile.

After stepping down, Avril Lavigne asked Gilbert, "How did I do?"

"Not bad, very nice," Gilbert applauded. "More importantly, your outfit was beautiful and your styling was gorgeous."

"Really?" Avril Lavigne's eyes lit up. She was already thinking about taking the performance outfit home and wearing it for Gilbert later.

Seeing Avril Lavigne's interaction with Gilbert, and all the screen time she was getting, Taylor Swift—who didn't attend the Grammys this year—felt a little jealous.

She was convinced Avril Lavigne was doing it on purpose. That witch, so scheming, deliberately using Gilbert to stir up attention.

At the same time, Taylor Swift thought she should look for an opportunity to invite Gilbert out herself.

When it came to scandals, it depended on with whom—they were worth much more when tied to a director as massively popular as Gilbert.

She had heard Avril Lavigne wrote songs for Gilbert. Taylor Swift could also write songs, so she planned to cover her room with Gilbert's photos and use him as her computer wallpaper to spark inspiration.

Gilbert had no idea Taylor Swift was thinking about him. Speaking of looks, he actually found Avril Lavigne more attractive.

The only thing Taylor Swift had over Avril Lavigne was her legs. Everyone knew Gilbert was obsessed with long legs—Hollywood's trend of long-legged beauties was partly thanks to him.

Top directors could influence Hollywood aesthetics. For example, since Gilbert favored long-legged actresses, agencies would cultivate long-legged beauties.

Michael Bay preferred big hips, so actresses with big hips were recommended to him—though he wasn't exactly a top-tier director.

Spielberg had a broad but predictable aesthetic—fair-skinned, classically pretty actresses. Those who were not beautiful or who were women of color rarely approached him.

Of course, only successful directors could shape Hollywood aesthetics. Power determined beauty standards.

Once you reached a certain level, you would notice that everyone around you naturally matched your aesthetic tastes.

In some ways, Hollywood and the Chinese entertainment industry were similar—both followed the aesthetics of those in power.

Currently, the Chinese entertainment industry was filled with good-looking actors with balanced features: handsome and sunny men, and women with varied forms of beauty. This was mainly because investors and directors had healthy tastes, resulting in high overall quality.

But when the next batch of decision-makers took over, for example if TV acquisition departments were replaced by middle-aged women obsessed with pale "boy-toy" idols, the aesthetic would shift.

The rise of mobile internet then magnified this aesthetic, pushing faces that normally wouldn't be mainstream into the spotlight, cultivating an audience that liked them.

From that point on, viewers with normal aesthetics found dramas increasingly unpleasant and stopped watching them.
